Chapter 14

These last few months had definitely been some to remember. Here she was, Anzu Mazaki, walking hand-in-hand with Atem Mutou, a boy, the only boy that has ever made her heart pound and her words to escape her as she faced him in the past. Now she knows, she knew that he had been the one from the start. Anzu thought all this as she wrapped her arm around Atem's and leaned against him as they walked along happily to his house. She looked up to him and noticed he was staring at her with his warm amethyst eyes, oh how she loved those big jewels of his. They made her feel like a diamond in the rough. Not to mention he was always so warm… Anzu giggled to herself and brought herself out of those thoughts before she went too south.

"Something funny little miss?" said her knight. Anzu looked up and smiled at him. Her smile always did make him smile and she didn't know why… all she knew was that, when he smiled, she just had to kiss him. And she did, she gave him a nice peck on the cheek which made him chuckle.

"Nothing knight." Atem blushed at the nickname but gave a small smile of approval to her and she giggled, hugging his arm closer to her. Atem rubbed the back of his head nervously with a blush and a laugh that made him appear to be bashful.

They walked in bliss as the sun set on this long day, but the two love birds didn't care. Yugi, who was walking behind them, smiled at the scene before him. He never imagined Anzu to be so happy, and he didn't expect that to come from his brother of all people. Of course, he always did have feelings for the brunette… but he also knew he couldn't do much to help her. He's just glad that if anyone could mend her wounded heart, it was Atem.

The gang had finally reached the Mutou home and Atem stopped at the front door. Everyone watched him carefully in silence until Anzu spoke up.

"It's alright Atem, we're here." She gave him a reassuring smile and he nodded.

"Here goes…" Atem felt his heart pounding and he took a deep breath. He opened the door slowly, terrified of what he might see. As he opened the door, something Atemu had said ran through his mind.

"Atum has restored everything back to normal…" With that, Atem went wide eyed and swung the door open to see Gramps sweeping the floor. His olden, purple eyes looked up.

"Oh, hello kids. Did you have fun today?" He said cheerfully. Atem couldn't believe it. The shop was undamaged, his grandfather unhurt, it all felt like a dream. Atem felt tears sting his eyes as they wanted to be set free but he shook his head and said,

"Y-yeah we had fun today…" he said as he held back tears. From the awful scene of seeing his beloved grandfather wounded, broken, bloody, to this. The change was too drastic for Atem. Anzu noticed he couldn't move so she guided him inside the house with the others following them. "Atum you bastard… you're gonna make me cry for no damn reason! Everything is… too normal…" Atem thought as he walked through the shop. Yugi and their grandfather gave him a confused look as Atem acted too casual. Right when he got to the first step of the stairs he stopped moving and turned to his grandfather.

"Something wrong Atem?" The spikey-haired teen shook his head, holding his tears back.

"Not anymore…" Without another word, Atem ran and hugged his grandfather. The old Mutou went wide eyed at his grandson's actions. Though he said nothing, he still hugged Atem back and looked up at him since he was taller.

"Atem…?" The teen in question backed away with a smile.

"Sorry gramps, I just wanted to say thank you." He raised a brow. "Don't worry, it's not important." With that, Atem went upstairs with the others following him. Once they got upstairs, the gang made their way into the living room only to be surprised by Mokuba.

"Hi guys! Welcome back!" Joey and Tristan hugged each other but realized soon after what they were doing and Joey punched the brunette off him. Yugi, Atem, and Anzu laughed as Kaiba and Ishizu came into the room.

"Congratulations Pharaoh." Ishizu then bowed as she spoke and Atem sighed.

"Ishizu, please do not call me that…I am no Pharaoh. The real Pharaoh… is gone." Atem looked off to the side, Anzu looked down while the others simply showed a hurt expression. Though none of them knew him well, they felt he knew them, better than they knew each other and themselves. Atem, however, took in a deep breath and exhales to show a brilliant smile that shocked everyone in the room. "But," he started. "I know I may end up failing at some point, but I will do my best as Pharaoh. On one condition." Ishizu went wide eyed, fully showing her blue eyes. Anzu watched Atem in wonder, how is it that he's so calm now? What's his secret? "I wish to remain here, with my friends. Mahad can come if he pleases, and I suppose Mana." He chuckled after mentioning his bubbly friend. Ishizu gave him a confused look.

"My Pharaoh, may I ask why?" His features softened finally after the intense battle and held Anzu's hand.

"Oh, nothing in particular. I just… wish to be close to my friends." That was when Atem gave Anzu that brilliant smile and she blushed. It was too stunning to not look at and the fact it was directed at her didn't make it better. He was being so affectionate now, maybe because Zorc is finally gone. Atem let go of her hand but Anzu kept her fist closed, there was something in it, something's wrong but she made no comment and smiled along with Atem.

Ishizu bowed in respect to his wishes and replied with a "Yes my Pharaoh." After this, the Egyptian women took her leave and prayed for everyone to have a nice evening.

"Alright! Party time!" yelled Joey. Everyone else lit up, even Kaiba somewhat, and rushed over to get the party started! Atem smiled at Anzu and nudged his head over to their friends before chuckling.

"So crazy." said Anzu with a giggle.

"As always." Atem replied while he smiled at her adorable giggle. He sighed and gave her a stern look that he saw make her worry. "Anzu, I love you. You have no idea how much I love you Anzu Mazaki, please never forget that." Anzu's heart thumped faster and faster from his loving and mysterious words. Forget? What was he talking about? Anzu then looked down at her hand and saw a note. "Read that before you sleep, but for now," Atem smirked and ran over to her. He lifted her up bridal style easily and she squeaked in surprised.

"A-Atem?!" she squealed when he spun around with her in his arms and then kissed her after. "Atem…?"

"Let's enjoy the party ok?" He smiled again, she had no idea a smile would fit him that well. Even his smirk, was there nothing that he wouldn't look good with? She smiled and pecked his lips tenderly.

"Ok Atem, but after will you please tell me what's going on?" Atem cringed and set her down. He paused for a moment, leaving silence only in the room.

"Sure…" Atem didn't look at her, didn't face her, he only walked out after. Anzu went wide eyed but relaxed shortly after. That wasn't a lie, he promised. It wasn't a lie… right? Anzu walked over to the living room to see everyone dancing and having a blast! Tristan and Mokuba watched Kaiba and Joey duel while Yugi and Atem were taking turns playing music. All this while grandpa brought in some snacks. Anzu smiled at the scene and wish it could last forever.

…Though forever might not seem as long as she thought…

It was about 11 pm, 3 hours after the party had started. All was well, the boys – minus Atem and Yugi - were asleep. Anzu had a simple smile as she cleaned the area around the sleeping boys. Atem looked at the clock and went to her.

"Anzu," She stood up after picking up some of Joey's cards from the ground while he murmured every now and then 'Red Eyes, attack…!'

"Yeah?" she said quietly. Atem chuckled and smiled.

"Come on, let me take you home. I'm sure your mother is worried." The beauty in question smiled and went to grab her bag as Atem told Yugi where he was going. They regrouped at the door and waved to the young Mutou and their grandfather. "Ready?" he asked her. Anzu nodded and opened the door into the cool evening.

The moon shined brilliantly as it's twinkling lights helped light the earth. The wind blew and shook the trees causing it to howl like a pack of wolves. But they didn't care, they had each other. Atem held Anzu's hand and wrapped his jacket around her to ease her shivers. She gripped his jacket by the shoulders while her flushing face smiled at him.

"Thank you." Atem smiled and held her close with his arm looming over hers.

"My pleasure." He kissed her cheek and chuckled when her head hid in his jacket.

"Atem… Are you gonna tell me what's wrong now?" He froze, he hoped she didn't remember. Atem cursed under his breath but tried to maintain a cool composure.

"It's nothing Anzu, I would tell you if something was wrong. Right?" She scowled for a moment but then remembered the promise he made to her. He wouldn't ever lie to her.

"Right…" She still had her doubts… if it's serious, or to protect her, he would lie. She knew this. So she felt if she waited and watched to see, then the problem would present itself to her. Little did she know that that's what Atem was afraid of…

A few minutes later and the two had finally reached Anzu's door. They turned to each other, Atem being very awkward and rubbed his forearm, Anzu eyeing him questionably. She shook her head and turned the knob to open the door, it made a creaking sound which made Anzu suck in a harsh breath. But surprisingly, her mother was in the kitchen washing dishes. She looked to Atem, now scared, and slowly walked to the kitchen with Atem following behind her. They came upon the door frame and saw her mother, washing dishes… and humming pensively. Anzu slowly approached her.

"M-Mom…" Her mother, Kiyomi spun around with a sponge and yellow rubber gloves. She clapped her hands together with a smile.

"So good of you to come Atem, and Anzu I'll forgive you this one time for being late." Anzu cringed, but sighed afterward. She looked at Atem sideways and he simply shrugged. They were both at a loss. "Well, you both have school tomorrow so I can assume you're leaving now?" she asked Atem. He nodded but then snapped his fingers.

"Oh, but I think I forgot something here last time." Kiyomi smiled while Anzu went to go shower.

"Ok dear, it's probably in Anzu's room knowing her. But be swift, I wish for her to be in bed before midnight you know." Atem smiled and bowed respectfully.

"Yes ma'am." Once Atem came back up, he smiled before walking off to the stairs. He thought to himself grimly as he ascended. He didn't want to worry anyone. But he knows what Atum meant, Atemu even gave a hint… but was it true? He opened the door to Anzu's room and wore a determined/focused face. He carefully eyed the room and couldn't help but think of his dreaming dancer. There were posters of dancers on the walls, mirrors that most likely were for her to practice stretching, he looked over to her desk and saw a few Duel Monsters cards and a small rule book. He walked over in curiosity and let out a small gasp. Was she learning to play in her spare time? A smile crept its way onto Atem's face and saw what had looked to be a deck in progress. He lifted it to examine its content. It appeared to be a spell caster's deck. Magician of Faith, Maha Vailo, and a few others along with some none spell casters like Shining Friendship, Happy Lover, and Seiyaryu. He even noticed the spell cards. Everything looked very balanced but he couldn't help it lacked something, he smiled. Atem opened the deck holder that was on his belt and took his deck out. He looked for two cards and slid them into her deck once she found them. "If you ever need me… use these cards and I'll be there." He thought. "Maybe I won't know you need me… but I'll be there." That time he said it aloud. He turned around and headed to the door, he needed to leave before she got back. With this in mind Atem reached the door knob and turned it, but for some reason he felt someone else turned it at the same time, maybe he needs sleep.

The door opened and on the other side was Anzu, extremely close to Atem by the way. Her chin rested inches from Atem's chest, he got taller, while their faces were so close they could hear the other breath. Atem knew he had to leave, so he took the initiative to clear his throat and move out of Anzu's way. She noticed this and felt a bit disappointed, normally he would have taken the opportunity to do something extremely romantic. This furthered her worries. Anzu walked over to her bed and placed her dirty clothes into the hamper next to it. Atem eyed her and noticed she wore a pink tank top with baby blue shorts. He brought his eyes back to what was in front of him- which was a wall- and waited for her to finish.

"Did you find what you were looking for?" she asked. Atem stiffened amongst the awkward silence.

"Yeah, yeah I did." He smiled remembering her deck. "And if you need help dueling, I can help if you want." This time Anzu cringed with a blush.

"I-I'll keep that in mind." She stood up and faced him. "So… you're leaving now?" There was a hint of sadness in her voice and Atem felt it. He hated her being like this, but he knew that he needed to keep his distance.

"Yeah, I have some homework to do…" he trailed off. Anzu approached him and placed her hand delicately on his shoulder. She felt his muscles tighten.

"Do I at least get a kiss good night?" she asked sweetly. Atem shifted his gaze to her and shockingly enough she was smiling that brilliant smile he couldn't resist.

"I'm not sure…"

"Please Atem." He sighed in defeat with a small smile.

"Alright alright, come here." Anzu giggled as Atem wrapped his arms around her waist and brought her into a kiss. What could one kiss do? Irony hit as Anzu wrapped her arms around his neck and brought him closer, heating the kiss up intensely. Atem groaned as his eyes shut tight and kissed her savagely. He wanted more and she let him. Next thing they knew; they fell on Anzu's bed with Atem on top. He kissed her neck gently and heard her moan. Oh god that moan of hers, there was nothing else like it. Granted it was the first he's heard it but he prayed it wouldn't be the last. Atem went wide eyed and back away. "I… I am so sorry Anzu. I promise I didn't meant to-" Atem was cut off from Anzu dragging him back down and captured his lips. Something was wrong, but it felt so right. Anzu rubbed her hands on this chest all the way around to her back. Atem mentally cursed, he couldn't stop this. He just kept falling and falling.

"Having fun?" A voice whispered.

Atem shot up and jumped off the bed, he stared Anzu down as she sat up confused. "A-Atem is something wrong?" Atem breathed heavily and looked around frantically. Anzu gripped her sheets and blushed. "Sorry… I guess I should have asked if you were ok with this… I'm so lame, you should go…" Atem looked at her and sat on her bed again.

"Anzu Mazaki, I love you. You're not lame, you're amazing." He caressed her cheek.

"I love you too…" Atem kissed her again but this time Anzu ended up on his lap again with her legs wrapped around his waist. Atem growled and gripped her waist to basically squeeze their bodies together, but during all this he couldn't help but wonder why she wanted this, why he was doing this. As a matter of fact, why was he allowing this? Those questions flew out the window when Anzu bent down a little moved her soft lips onto Atem's neck. The courageous Mutou gasped and Atem wide eyed followed shortly after by a groan. She kissed his neck up and down slowly, her lips lingered on his skin, leaving the impression that her lips didn't leave his skin at all. She even noticed that, at one part, he would groan more than from any different spot.

She giggled and kissed the part right behind his left ear. She felt his muscles tense and wrap around her. She could tell he was at a loss for simple brain functions because he released his hold and held her cheeks. He kissed her savagely and pinned her down on her bed.

They broke apart, Atem looming over her, Anzu pinned with her hands above her head, both faces flushed and breathing heavily. Anzu got her hands free and rubbed Atem's chest lovingly. Atem swore that he thought she had told him to take his shirt off, but that concerned him. She giggled. Atem became serious and loomed over to her, he stared deep into her eyes.

Darkness.

Darkness danced across her big blue beauties just as she danced across the stage to beat Johnny Steps. Atem's eyes widened like a cat's and he stepped back. He growled and glared at her intensely as the eye of Horus appeared on his head. Anzu became frightened and brought her blanket close to her chest.

"A-Atem…?" His glare intensified.

"I'd appreciate it if you got out of my girlfriend." Anzu went wide eyed… but shortly after she passed out and a dark aura formed around her, emanating laughter and a presence similar to Anzu.

"Girlfriend? I didn't think you had that type of vocabulary Mutou." The cloud of darkness began to take shape and a head appeared, Anzu's head. The only difference, this one's eyes were brown. Atem smirked.

"Heh, well at least I caught you before you could fully manifested." His forehead glowed more and this "Yami Anzu" hissed. She squinted her eyes. "Aw, does this hurt? Here let me help you with that." Atem's smirk grew as the glow became brighter. She screamed and Atem saw as if something were burning. He stopped. "Now, stay away from her. Understand? Go harass my Yami in Hell! Mind crush!" In a flash of bright light, the evil from within Anzu vanished into the pits of Hell as did the dark clouds. Atem walked to her bed slowly and watched as she stirred awake. He smiled and caressed her cheek. "Hey, how are you feeling?" Anzu's eyes fluttered open and she giggled.

"You called me your girlfriend." she said groggily. Atem blushed intensely. She giggled and sat up. "Thanks though." Atem was taken aback by that. Why was she thanking him? It was his fault that happened to her! "And no it wasn't your fault Atem." He went wide eyed, can she read minds now? "Also no, I can't read minds." Atem groaned, which made Anzu laugh. "I just know you now Atem Mutou, I know you too well to know what that face means."

"Face?" He was confused. "What face?" Anzu giggled once more and placed both hands on both of his cheeks. He closed his eyes to her soft touch and sighed, she was the only one to ease his racing mind but jumpstart his calm heart. "That face you make when you're hurt by something." she whispered. Atem opened his eyes a little to look at her, but shortly after, she kissed him tenderly. "Atem," she pulled away. "C-can you…" Anzu blushed shyly and took her hands away from his cheeks and rubbed her arms nervously. Atem smiled, maybe he didn't have to worry anymore.

"I'll do anything you ask. Name it." With that, she covered his face and shook her head. Atem chuckled. Oh he loved it when she was being bashful. He kissed her hands and heard her gasp. He peeked his eyes out to see her blushing more. "Come on Anzu, tell me." He even gave her THE most tender smile that would probably make him into a male-model, or win him a million dollars, or, possibly, get Anzu to tell him what she wanted.

She gave in.

"Can you stay… for tonight?" she said very shyly and even squeaked that last part out. Atem blushed. She wanted… what?! There was no way he could make that happen… even though he really wanted to. "I know… my mom… she would probably kill you…" She looked down and fisted her hands that were filled by blanket. Atem looked a little hurt from how let down she looked. She laid down and faced the wall. "You should go now…" Atem stood there, watching her. He decided then, he removed his jacket and left it on her desk neatly folded, he then removed his socks and shoes and pushed them aside to not be in the way when either of them woke up. He carefully lifted the blanket and slid in behind her. Anzu jumped slightly at the feel of arms around her and turned to see it was Atem who smiled tenderly at her. A smile only she could see. A smile only she would get. A smile that belonged to her. She snuggled close into his chest and sighed, he was so warm. She felt Atem's steady heart beat on her ear, it felt so gentle… his hands came up and soothingly rubbed her back.

"I'll do anything you ask." he whispered. Anzu smiled. Never had she thought she would be this happy in her life. And yet there she was, being insanely happy. Nothing could ruin this, she thought. Nothing…

Don't…

Forget…

Forget…

Forget…

Anzu ran, she ran from the horrifying voice that shook her soul.

Forget…

Do not be afraid.

She bolted into a full on sprint. She did not feel tired, she only felt fear. But then, out of nowhere, she felt warm. A familiar warmth that wrapped around her and whisked her away from her fear. The warmth took shape, a shape that made her heart pound.

"Atem…" she cried. He held her tight and told her something that was inaudible to her. She was greatly frustrated but found she could read his lips. "Do not be afraid." he had said. "Don't be afraid? Of what?"

"Don't… forget…" His voice faded and she cried. She felt as if her whole world fell apart, her heart being ripped out, herself crumbling. She cried.

The next day, Anzu awoke from her slumber with a smile plastered widely on her face. She stretched her arms and yawned as the morning sun brought her out of her tiredness. She swung her legs over her bed only for her feet to be met with a cold floor, she shivered. But even so she was delightfully happy. She wasn't sure why. Anzu rose from her bed and stood in front of the mirror, the glistening morning light trickled into her room to give it and her a healthy glow. Her reflection was average. Messy hair, pink tank top with one strap that hung loose on her shoulder, a kiss mark on her neck, a- Anzu took a double take. When did she get that!? She was horrified. Worse, humiliated! A boy had never even been… "Do not be afraid." A baritone voice rang deep in her mind as she placed her left hand delicately on the front of her throat.

"The necklace…" she whispered. Then gasped. "Atem!" She turned and found that there was no sign of him anywhere. How the hell did she forget him? Did he cast a spell on her? Anzu shook her head and decided to ask him in school.

Within the span of what seemed to be seconds, she managed to dress herself and run out the door before her mom had the chance to ask about her neck situation. She ran. Ran and Ran. She ran and ended up in front of the Mutou house in time to see Yugi walking out.

"Yugi! Good morning!" She noticed Yugi jump and look around, startled. He saw her and was shocked. His face said "why are you here?" but Anzu shrugged that off and went up to him. "How are you?" Yugi only blinked in confusion.

"Uh, I'm alright. You?" Anzu eyed him the same way, confused.

"I'm good. Something wrong?" He nodded. "What?"

"Did you fight a lion or…?" Oh crap he was referring to her neck. She quickly covered the spot with her hand and blushed.

"I-it's nothing. Luffa attack in the shower was all…" She began to question why she didn't just tell him that his brother didn't know the meaning of self-control. Again, she shrugged it off.

"Well ok, if you say so. Let's go." Anzu raised a brow.

"Wait, what about…?"

"He can walk by himself as usual." As usual? What did he mean by that? Before she could even ask, Yugi was already walking. She scrambled her thoughts and ran after her friend.

"Are… you two fighting?" she asked carefully. Yugi shook his head and sighed.

"Looks like the luffa knocked you for a loop Anzu. No, he's just always an ass, remember?" Remember… that was a word that stood out to her. She couldn't even begin to fathom what he could possibly be saying. With this in mind, she kept quiet till she arrived in school. Clearly she had to question Atem about this strange morning.

Once she got to school, she saw him in her class, at his desk, staring out the window with a cup of coffee, a dark, bored, look in his eyes. This was almost like a red flag saying "Stop" but she didn't pay attention. She approached him carefully, she eyed him cautiously, and cleared her throat. He turned.

"Yes?" That response felt like a slap to the face. This was not Atem, not Atem at all. She fisted her hands.

"Atem, does this morning seem weird to you?" He raised a brow and sat upright. "Something wrong?"

"No no, it's just I didn't think you knew my name." Anzu felt appalled that he thought that.

"W-why would you think that?" Tears stung her eyes.

"Easy, because we're not exactly buddies." He told her with the dullest expression she has ever seen from him.

She ran... Her heart shattered.
