James stared with wide eyes as a little man entered the Knight household grinning, the Knights all welcoming him and hugging him. And when I say the Knights, I mean Kendall's whole family- from cousins to his grandparents, all gathered at Kendall's mom's house for a Christmas party.
"Daddy, who's that?" Oliver whispered from his father's lap.
"I dunno."
Kendall entered the room with drinks for he and James and noticed the new arrival. He smiled awkwardly and the two hugged uncomfortably. The man kissed Kendall's cheek briefly and Kendall rubbed the back of his own neck, seeming to be panicking. Then he gestured for the man to follow him and they approached James.
James stood, ready to shake the man's hand, but Kendall gave him a strange look as they stopped.
"James, this is Logan," he said uncomfortably. "Logan, this is James."
"James," Logan said, brows furrowed and not seeming to understand something. But James understood just fine. This was Kendall's ex, who apparently Kendall's whole family was in love with.
"My boyfriend," Kendall said. Logan shook James's hand silently, saying nothing but his mood seemed to shift. "And that's Oliver, James's son."
"Son," Logan repeated, looking down at Oliver, who hid shyly behind his dad. "Kendall, I didn't know-"
"What're you doing here?" Kendall interrupted.
"I was invited," Logan said simply. "You know I come down to visit family during the holidays."
"C'mon Olly, let's go-" James began uncomfortably, but Kendall stopped him.
"Stay here, babe," he said firmly.
"Yeah, stay," Logan said. "I haven't even heard about you. Tell me about yourself."
They sat on the couch, Kendall between them, and James began talking about how he was about to start college when Oliver climbed into Kendall's lap.
"Kendall, can you take me to the bathroom?" he asked innocently. Logan's eyes flashed angrily up to Kendall to see that his response was casual. He got up, carrying the child with him.
James fell silent, wanting to run away. Logan seemed to feel the same way and he rubbed his shoulder awkwardly. He looked over at James and found that James was already looking at him, so he let out a nervous laugh and looked away.
James was sure that although Kendall seemed uninterested in Logan, Kendall would eventually run back to him.
And what wasn't to love? Logan was so handsome- he had smart dark eyes and slick hair and his button-up sleeves were rolled up. He was a doctor, so he was rich, and was obviously friendly if he won over all of the Knight's.
"Katie didn't warn me about you," Logan laughed a little.
"Hm?"
"I mean I didn't even know he had a boyfriend," Logan elaborated. "The whole reason I agreed to come over here was to-"
Logan's eyes caught James and he realized what he was saying and stopped.
"To what?" James prodded gently. Logan held up his hands in surrender and shook his head.
"Doesn't matter now," he said simply. James had a feeling he was going to say that he only came to win Kendall back. And maybe he would have said it if James wasn't a foot taller than him.
The two sat awkwardly for a moment.
"I mean, what I'm trying to say is… I didn't know Kendall had moved on. And with such a hot- I mean with such a handsome guy, is all."
"I'm sorry," James found himself saying.
"What do you think of him?" Logan finally asked. "Do you love him?"
"We haven't been together that long-"
"But he's easy to love."
"Maybe, but-"
"But you're afraid because of your son. I can see he's your biological son, so obviously something happened between you and his mother and maybe you're still fragile?"
"Well-"
"Does he love you yet? Has he told you?" Logan interrupted yet again.
"No, but-"
"No surprise- Kendall's careful with his heart," Logan said reassuringly. James sat there, feeling slightly angry, and Logan chuckled. "Sorry. I keep interrupting. I'm just so… frazzled."
"Why?"
"I'm sure Kendall's mentioned me… And how I just won't let go of him," Logan said with a little smile. "Of course I came here to charm him… And he's got this tall, hot boyfriend that has a kid… And I'm none of that. Please don't beat me up."
James's jealousy level immediately raised and mixed with anger in his chest. Logan came here to get Kendall back, and what if James hadn't come to this party? What could have happened between them? James trusted Kendall, but he also knew that Kendall was the one that was broken up with and had his heart broken, and that Logan seemed to be perfect…
"Logan, are you playing nice?" Katie asked, plopping down between them and pulling James from his trance.
"Of course," Logan grinned, killing James with cute dimples that he knew Kendall must love. "Nobody told me about him, though. Thanks for the warning, jeez."
"You know Kendall loves his handsome men," Katie said, shouldering James. "And he definitely loves handsome men who have adorable little kids."
Logan smiled sadly and turned his eyes to the carpet.
"James is a great dude, right, James?" Katie said convincingly, turning to James. "Kendall's doing well. He's happy."
"I heard about his new book," Logan nodded. "It's definitely different than his murder mysteries."
"You know what it's about?" James butted in, sounding angrier than he meant to.
"He told me," Logan nodded, then cocked his head. "He didn't tell you?"
"He didn't tell any of us," Katie said. "He won't let us know what it's about."
"Oh… This is awkward," Logan laughed nervously.
"What's it about?" James asked Katie asked eagerly. James would have been eager, too, but he was too busy being insanely jealous and puzzled about Kendall telling Logan about his book when he won't even tell his own boyfriend.
"Well," Logan said smugly with a shrug. "If he doesn't want you guys to know, I won't say. But he did say it'll be a best-seller."
Suddenly Kendall appeared, Oliver on his hip.
"What're we talking about?" he asked, perching on the arm of the couch. James looked up at him, and he had to get away. This was just too much.
"I gotta- um-" James said, standing up. "Yeah."
Before he could walk away, Kendall caught his arm.
"What's wrong?" he asked softly. James glanced over at Logan, who was talking to Katie now, then shook his head.
"Nothing," he lied. "I'm just getting a little claustrophobic."
He disappeared up the stairs, finding peace and quiet in Kendall's old bedroom. Kendall's laptop was set up on the desk from where he was working while James, Oliver, Mrs. Knight, and Katie played downstairs waiting for guests to arrive.
James closed the door and sat on the bed, letting out a deep sigh.
Logan was obviously still attached to Kendall, but Kendall didn't seem so enthusiastic. He never talked about Logan, and James didn't even know what they guy looked like before ten minutes ago. Of course he was glad Kendall wasn't interested… But he couldn't compete with Logan if Logan had made a move like he planned.
Logan was small and cute, but still sexy and handsome at the same time. He was assertive and had a good head on his shoulders. Both of those things James couldn't even think about competing with…
The computer made a noise, catching James's attention. He got up, drawn to the lit-up screen, and saw that there was an email that popped up. He ignored that, drawn to the article on the screen.
He really wasn't planning on it, but after a few clicks he was on Kendall's novel.
If Logan knew what it was about, couldn't James know? What was Kendall hiding? There was no need for him to be so secretive. Why should Logan know, anyway? Kendall said he didn't really talk to Logan anymore, but obviously he did. How much did they talk?
It only took a few pages for James to realize the novel was about him. The main character's name was Jason and he had a daughter named Olivia. Olivia's mother was dead. Jason was having flashbacks to his days as a druggie, while the main plot story was him stripping to support he and Olivia and him meeting a girl, Kendra, but he can't let her into his heart.
Every part that James scrolled to was part of his own story. All the way to the beginning, where Olivia's mom was still alive and Jason wasn't allowed to see his daughter.
The title of the document said Tales of the Broken, and with the insinuation that Kendall thought that James and Oliver were "broken", James had to get out.
Katie disappeared with Oliver, leaving just Logan and Kendall.
"I came here to get you back, Kendall," Logan admitted with a little smile, sitting on the arm of the couch, Kendall sitting beside him on the cushion. "Come to find out, there's a seven foot tall man in my way."
"Loge-"
"I know it was stupid to expect you to take me back," Logan said in embarrassment. "But the apartment is so lonely without you. I miss you."
Kendall fell silent, not knowing what to say.
"Do you like being a dad as much as you thought you would?" Logan asked.
"Yeah," Kendall nodded. "Oliver's amazing. I love taking care of him and playing with him and-"
Logan was silent, staring at the carpet.
"I'm not with him just because he has a kid," Kendall said. "Oliver's just a plus."
"You know I would have had a kid with you eventually," Logan murmured.
"It's not about the kid," Kendall snapped. "It's about James and me."
Kendall got up, annoyed, deciding to go find James, who went upstairs. He understood why James seemed upset- Logan probably intimidated him.
He started to go upstairs, but Mrs. Knight caught him.
"Why did James leave?" she asked.
"He did?"
"He came and got Oliver and gave me a kiss and said thanks for inviting him," she said with a shrug. "Seemed off… Looked upset."
Kendall sighed and rubbed his eyes.
"I think Logan made him mad," he said.
"It couldn't have been Logan," his mother said doubtfully.
James had ignored all of Kendall's calls, and when Kendall went to his apartment James and Oliver were off to tell James's boss about the accident and take a medical leave, then to dinner.
The truth was, James didn't want to talk. Kendall didn't know he was mad at him, but James just wanted to be left alone.
Why did Kendall think it was okay to write a book about James's life? Why would James want the whole world to know his story when it took so long for James himself to tell Kendall? Kendall was practically the only person who knew and he was abusing that.
It was about eleven that night when someone knocked on Kendall's door. Of course Kendall rushed to answer it, hoping it was James… But it wasn't.
There stood Logan, a rose in his hand. He looked up at Kendall and cocked his head with a little smile, his dimples appearing. Anger waved over Kendall in a flash.
"I heard what happened with James," he said innocently. "I didn't mean to piss him off or whatever."
"Why are you here?"
"I want to catch up. Is James here?"
"No," Kendall said. "He won't even talk to me."
"I'm sorry, Kendall," Logan said sincerely. "I really didn't mean to hurt his feelings. You know I didn't, I must have said something snotty to him. I'm just emotional seeing you again…"
"More like jealous."
Logan's eyes dropped and he shrugged.
"Maybe," he admitted. "I was hoping we could reconnect while I'm here…"
"Do you think I'd move all the way back here if there was a chance we'd get back together?" Kendall asked quietly. "I love someone else."
"Fair enough," Logan said, obviously effected by the use of the word "love", since he did know that Kendall didn't just throw that word around. "Can I come in for a while?"
Kendall let him in, and Logan looked around. It was kind of messy and there were toy cars and a few stuffed animals scattered around. On the refrigerator was an old sticky note saying "Went out for donuts" with a little heart below the message. Just like Kendall used to leave for him when they lived together.
Kendall could see that Logan was slowly letting it all sink in that Kendall had moved on, so he decided he was harmless enough.
"Want some wine or something?" he asked. "It's all I have."
James was now more mad at Kendall than he was upset about the novel. How could he? He knew James's past was a sensitive issue for him and he didn't want anyone to know about it, so why would he write a novel about it?
Furthermore, was he just using James for a good story? Was that all James was to him, a good plotline for his latest book?
Oliver somehow knew his father was upset, even though James worked hard not to show it. James heard him talking to someone in his bedroom and looked in to see that Oliver was on his cell phone with someone.
"Can you come over? Daddy's sad," he said quietly.
"Olly?" James asked, stepping in. "Who are you talking to?"
"I don't know…" he answered, looking at the phone in confusion. James took the phone like only a parent can do when their son calls someone strange, and pressed it to his ear.
"I'm sorry," he said, pulling Oliver up on his bed by his arm.
"James?" came an unfamiliar voice. He looked at his phone and it said that it was supposed to be Kendall.
"Who is this?" James asked.
"This is Logan," the voice slurred, and anger filled James's core. "Who's this?"
"Why do you have Kendall's phone?"
"I'm at his house," Logan answered. "We're drinking and- and having fun."
Jealousy and rage overtook James and he dashed out of the room and away from Oliver.
"What kind of fun?" he asked dangerously into the phone.
There was some struggling noises into the speaker, then Kendall said "Hello?" Immediately James hung up and flung the phone at the wall, shattering the screen and forcing the battery out.
"I wanted Kendall to come make you happy," Oliver explained from his bedroom doorframe.
"Kendall's the reason I'm unhappy, though," James said through his tears.
"What's wrong, Daddy?"
"Kendall hurt my feelings," James explained. "Now he seems to have a new… Best friend."
James had to refer to Kendall as his "best friend", because that's what Oliver though he was and it was easier to use Oliver's terms rather than explain that Kendall and James were boyfriends.
Oliver twisted his little pink lips and heaved a sigh.
James wiped his tears before going and picking his son up, lying him in the bed. Oliver pulled the blankets up.
"What story do you want to read tonight?" James asked, going to the bookshelf for a bedtime story.
"I'm too tired for a story," Oliver answered.
"Too tired? What's wrong with you?"
"It's not as fun if Kendall doesn't read it," Oliver explained. That felt like the child had stabbed his father in the heart. What was James supposed to do if he and Kendall did break up over this, but Oliver was still attached to the blonde? "He does funny voices."
"Okay," James said quickly, going to his son and kissing his forehead. "Night, Ol. Sweet dreams."
After tucking Oliver in, James settled into his own bed. The thought of what could be happening right now between Kendall and Logan was killing him. Of course all he could think was that the two were having sex. He bet that Logan was a better lover than James was. He bet Kendall enjoyed cuddling with Logan more than he did James. He bet they weren't even wearing protection because there was no fear of STD with Logan. Logan was a doctor- a perfect man who was clean, smart, and had the careful touch of a doctor.
He bet Kendall found that James had left the party earlier that day and was relieved. He probably invited Logan to his apartment to "catch up", they drank a little too much, and things got out of hand.
He tried to tell himself that he didn't care what Kendall was doing. He tried to think that he didn't even want to think about Kendall or talk to him ever again… But it wasn't true. Already he was missing Kendall and was jealous that Kendall's ex was back, possibly getting his mind blown by James's boyfriend.
James was glad his phone was broken, because if it wasn't he might call Kendall and break it up, and he knew he shouldn't even talk to him.
By the time Oliver came in to wake him up, James had slept maybe two hours.
