I OWN NOTHING!

CHAPTER 13: You can't go home again

I'm heading straight for the castle

They want to make me their Queen

And there's an old man sitting on a throne

And saying I should probably keep my pretty mouth shut

Straight for the castle…

Halsey, Castle

She really shouldn't be surprised. It was tradition after all – a ritual of sorts – for every time a Royal member of the Original Family returned home, it was expected to throw them a parade and escort them to the castle like compound with cheering and applauding. So she shouldn't be surprised that the entire French Quarter - if not the entire New Orleans - would dress up in colors for the return of the most feared members of the Royal Family.

She really shouldn't be surprised, but still, she was.

She rolled her eyes when one of his minions took her bags from her. She stopped trying to remember all of their names long time ago. Once she could proud herself of knowing all of them, but there was no point, each time she got all of their names correct, Klaus would turn hundreds of more and she`d be at a loss again.

"Was this really necessary?' she asked throwing him a glance sideways as they exited the airport. She may not expect the parade when she planned her outfit today, but this was New Orleans, and she knew that the Queen should always be the least perfect when she wondered in its streets, even for mere seconds. You never knew when someone could wonder off and see you. Appearances were everything in their kind of life. So even though she was surprised, her dress code was on point. "I mean you were only missing for what? A week?"

However, she smoothed her knee length red satin dress and prepared to be tortured by her Devil Wears Prada high heels as she threw back some of her locks. The dress was safe yet alluring, not showing too much neither covering everything. It was sleeveless yet not quite strapless, and the heat shaped cut was just perfect to show off her breasts in a casually modest yet sexy way. The small golden heart necklace she wore matched perfectly with her infinity bracelet and the sunlight ring. The dress clung to her body in all the right places and her strawberry red lips were seducing and inviting, her locks almost on free reign, only half of them caught in a seemingly careless bun. She was breathtaking and she knew it.

Klaus smiled that crooked smile of his, as he once more looked to appreciate the goddess standing next to him.

"I had nothing to do with it love, you`re the one who called the shots on the welcome party." he said cryptically as he straightened his suit in a very Elijah like manner.

"My plan was to throw a small welcome back party Klaus!" she scoffed "Not an entire parade with thousands of people!"

"Well, it seems that Elijah disagrees with you!" Klaus mocked knowing the antagonism the two of them had "He probably thinks that the King returning into his domain would require a larger response..."

"It seems that he and I would need to have words about busting your ego!" she murmured under her breath making the king chuckle wickedly.

They were outside the airport now and Caroline was glaring daggers at the white limousine - her favorite - waiting just outside.

Show off!

They greeted their subjects; she with a bright and kind smile, he with a know-it-all patronizing I-know-what-you-did toothless grin.

"Shall we?" he asked as they made their way to the car.

"Actually..." Caroline hesitated and he turned around to face her frowning at her suspiciously.

She rolled her eyes.

"Stop thinking of conspiracy theories" she teased smiling "I just... It`s been years since I`ve been on these streets..."

He noticed the nostalgia in her eyes and smiled. She had missed home as much as he had. He could see it now, even if she had denied it.

"I want to look around a little, breath it in again..." her eyes blurred with memories that lurked from every corner of the legendary city.

"Do you have a death wish, love?" Klaus asked turning serious.

She looked at him a little surprised and taken aback. Here goes their progress.

His tone was serious as he caught her questioning eye.

"I`m fairly certain that if you fall from these high heels of yours, even vampirism won`t prevent you from dying!" he said sending a menacing glare at the heels. Despite herself she threw her head back and laughed, as did everyone who was listening in.

"You`re probably right..." she said smiling up at him. "Besides we have some more pressing matters to discuss, a tour is the least of our concerns."

As if on cue the guards brought Rebekah out from the front door, chained with the supernatural paralyzers that temporarily stole her vampiric strength - so he had (indeed) been in contact with his tactless therapist huh? She pushed the thought away as the realization hit her. It wasn't Elijah that organized this, it was him. It was a show of force, an example for them all to remember that he was above them all, that not even his family could escape the laws if they conspire against him. This was to once more install fear and humiliate his sister. Two birds with one stone. And judging by everyone`s surprised and terrified glances, it was working perfectly well. Even if Rebekah was starting tall refusing to cower as she made her way towards them. The two girls exchanged conspiratory glances before looking away.

Caroline glared at him letting him know that she knew what he had planned and he responded with his wicked smirk on display not to the least bit bothered by her accusatory glare.

He leaned in and in a tone that only she could hear whispered "So that everyone knows their place!"

She smiled a winning fake smile that only he could detect was amiss, turning around to fix his tie, tightening it a little too much, earning a glare from him and whispering in an equally same tone.

"You`re a jerk!" the plastered smile widened and her head cooked at one side "You know that right?!"

He threw his head back and laughed dramatically, keeping up the show.

Surprising her twice in one day, he suddenly leaned in and caught her lips, drawing her in it with full force. To her surprise it felt good. So good... She kissed him back and what started as an not-so-innocent show of status turned into a heated kissing session.

What was wrong with her anyway?! It was like sometimes she felt almost repelled by his kisses and others she couldn't get enough, it was like a never ending turning on and off of an invisible switch. Maybe it was because of the fact that they were both in a city that they both considered to be their home once. Maybe it was because of the memories it held. Or because she was nuts, but this was one of the times she could feel she had put her soul in the kiss. As if she needed it more than she could tell. As if she needed it more than she let on, more than she could bare to acknowledge. The barrier had been lifted again on its own accord, triggered by an unknown motion and it felt like the suddenly freed emotions compelled her to enjoy every part of the connection before it threatened to go back down, forced by a strong power, stronger than gravity, shielding her true emotions once more.

They both let go at the same time, reluctantly, still clinging on each other though, both of his hands on her face, hers locked on the back of his neck, breathing heavily on each others faces, completely ignorant of the commotion around them, the snap of pictures, the applaud, the whispers. He looked at her surprised, obviously he hadn't expected such a respond and reading the surprise into her eyes he knew she hadn't either.

"Caroline Forbes Mikaelson..." he whispered in a low voice "Will I ever be able to figure you out?"

She blinked up at him surprised, both by the use of her last name and the vulnerability in his eyes. She said nothing. She didn't know what to say, stunned as she was.

It took him a few more minutes before he forced himself away from her.

He opened the door, holding it for her, and she smiled wickedly as she stepped in, immediately reattaching her blood red lipstick as he slipped next to her and commanded the driver to move. She watched in the review mirror the hybrids put Rebekah in a black SUV that fell into step behind them.

The airport wasn't too far but the ride lasted about an hour. That was what happened when the entire Quarter followed you by feet to show their respect to you and of course to ask favors later. The sound of the live music made her feel alive as it followed them along with the people parading. This was a million times better than any shitty radio. So she gave herself the permission to relax and lean back into the chair closing her eyes and enjoying it all.

They spent the half way in concrete silence, both lost into the memories of their kiss, or in Caroline`s case, trying not to over analyze it furthermore. If only her mind was as easy to control as was everything and everyone else. It was like an ever ready to explode volcano. She couldn't turn it off even if she tried.

She sighted annoyed after a little and opened her eyes.

"I can`t believe I`m back!" she said not sure how she felt about it just yet.

"Yes it's quite vexing to return... home..." he mused looking outside the window.

She didn't understand why she said it, or how she felt about it, she just blurted it out. Without thinking.

"You can't go home again..." she whispered looking in nowhere in particular. That seemed to have caught his attention as he turned his head and looked at her noticing her absent and lost gaze. She went on.

"You can't go back home to your family, back home to your childhood, back home to romantic love, back home to a young man's dreams of glory and of fame, back home to exile, to escape to Europe and some foreign land, back home to lyricism, to singing just for singing's sake, back home to aestheticism, to one's youthful idea of 'the artist' and the all-sufficiency of 'art' and 'beauty' and 'love,' back home to the ivory tower, back home to places in the country, to the cottage in Bermude, away from all the strife and conflict of the world, back home to the father you have lost and have been looking for, back home to someone who can help you, save you, ease the burden for you, back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time - back home to the escapes of Time and Memory."

She went silent and blinked the tears away as she took a huge gape of oxygen in and released it in a failed attempt to calm her nerves.

"It`s really unsettling to know I`m back home..." she said sadly "Knowing that home, this is not! Not anymore..."

"I knew of your love for Thomas Wolf`s book..." he stated shaken by her sudden openness. "But I hadn't realized you shared his philosophy..."

Caroline turned around to truly face him.

"Don`t you?" she asked taking him back once more. "I can't go home again! But, the question is Nik, can you?"

He remained silent for a couple of minutes before his features hardened in heartbeat and he said, ever collected.

"I`ll be there in less than forty minutes!"

She chuckled humorlessly "You`re evading the question, how novel!"

Her voice dripping of sarcasm was what tipped him off the edge, his good mood long forgotten.

"What do you want me to say Caroline?!" he snapped at her viciously "You were supposed to be my home, my safe heaven, my everything! So what is it you want me to say?!"

"Don't you dare throw the ball of blame to me again Niklaus Mikaelson, you are as much to blame here as I am!" she yelled at him. "Yes, I made a mistake, I hurt you and I am sorry. I've already admitted my part of the fault, but let's not forget that none of this would have happen if you hadn't done everything in your power to push me away! Don`t you dare deny it! And I'm not having this conversation again, so stop bringing it up!"

She saw him rigid with anger and determination, it was clear to her now that all he wanted to do was reach out and tear her to pieces, but he knew she was right - deep down, he did!

Though he would never admit it. Instead he shook his head disapprovingly.

"You never learn do you?!" he growled looking outside the window.

Few more silent moments passed until she spoke again.

"All these years of therapy and she`s still failing isn`t she?!" she scoffed, answering with a question of her own, raising her chin up and facing away as if insulted.

"Leave Camille out of this!" he growled not even deeming her worthy of a glance.

"Oh, I`m sorry!" she snapped "Have I insulted that stupid therapist of yours?! Or is she still your friend with benefits? Shall I expect she`ll be warming your bed tonight? Shall I make a reservation for a guest room, or a hotel room-"

"Mind your bloody tongue!" he yelled snapping at her. "I`m not the unfaithful one here!"

"So you really think it is any different when you sleep your way through the French Quarter, but when I even think of liking someone, it`s suddenly World War Three!" she yelled back.

"I have never EVER cheated on you Caroline!" he yelled "EVER!"

"Oh, please!" she mocked looking outside through teary eyes. "Then what was she doing with you every bloody night? Playing chess?!"

"What the fuck are you talking about?!"

"Don`t act like you don`t know!" she growled. "I called you almost every night for two months when I first left and she kept answering the phone. Each time it was well past two O'clock and she was informing me, ever so nicely, that you were exhausted and asleep!"

Klaus was left mouth agape by the hurt in her trembling voice, with the tears ready to pour from out of her glazing blues. There was no mistaking the green demon that shone in them this time. Her jealousy was on full display. He had convinced himself he had imagined it in the jet, he hadn't. But why? She claimed she hated him, he felt it in her dread when he was about to touch her that night she offered herself to save Enzo's life. He liked it though, it was a pleasant throwback to the times she was completely and undeniably his, the times when she hated Cami only for the fact that they used to be intimates long ago. He was pissed off though, about the fact that Cami didn't only hid the fact that Caroline had called him, but went all the way in to delete the calls so he wouldn't see them in the morning.

"That is none of your business!" he shouted.

"Of course it's not!"

"My, my Caroline!" he mocked seeming amused once more "Are you jealous, love?"

Caroline raised two mocking eyebrows at him making a face.

"Not this again! Don`t be absurd!" she scoffed insulted "What do I have to be jealous from that power hungry, secondary bad copy of me?!"

It was Klaus`s time to raise an eyebrow "That was harsh, love. Especially directed to such a valuable ally as her!"

"Ally? Really?" she mocked again "Is that what you`re calling your every bed partner now? At least have some taste!"

"Easy tiger!" he was enjoying her annoyance and his teasing magnified"The lady as a Lord that does not share!"

"I still can believe how she can manage to wrap someone as amazing as Lucien around her boring little finger!"

He chuckled.

"A lot of animosity there?!" he continued teasing.

"Well, I am only nice to people I actually like!" she scoffed..

"If I remember correctly, you hated Rebekah too, in the beginning!" he said putting a finger on his strawberry lips, making a gesture as if he was trying to remember, when they both knew he remembered perfectly well.

"Rebekah would never hit on someone she knew was taken!" She said raising her chin up.

Klaus looked her with the 'are we talking about the same Rebekah?' look and she re-phrased.

"Not someone that was mine at least..."

Another couple of silent moments.

"I saw the dark object Rebekah was chained with..." she commented. "Either they are no longer in Mrs. Castle`s possession or she's at the Mikaelson Compound!"

"As I said Mrs. Castle is a good ally and friend of mine and she will be expected to be treated as one, am I making this clear enough?"

"Crystal!" she growled at him with a fake smile plastered on her lips "As is the fact that I`ll be sleeping in the guests room!"

"Caroline..." he warned.

"I`ll take the room on the second floor, you know I like rising with the sun!" she went on as if she hadn't heard him at all.

"You`ll sleep in our room Caroline!" he growled.

She knew better than to challenge that tone.

Silence ruled again.

One second...

Two seconds...

Three seconds...

Four-

"At least make sure the bed covers are changed! And I want a new pillow!-"

"You listen to me!" he growled catching her face with two fingers and forcing her to face him. "I would never take another woman in the room we shared together! No matter how mad I was with you. Got it?!"

She blinked up at him surprised by the sincerity in his voice.

She knew it had to be a lie.

There were these moments, these cracks in his walls, when she managed to see her man, the old Klaus, the one that made her fall for him head over heels every day once.

"In fact, I haven`t slept in that room since that night..."

They both knew which one, no further explanations needed.

They broke the eye contact almost at the same time.

"Don`t dagger her Nik..." she whispered the name escaping her mouth once more, before she realized.

He blinked at her and his eyes suddenly hardened.

"You will not manipulate me into letting this go by using my vulnerabilities, against me love!" he growled. "If nothing else you`ll make things worse!"

"I'm not saying you should let this go..." she begged "Just don't't dagger her! I need her, I need my partner in crime!" she let a small giggle as she remembered him calling them that when they used to prank him and Elijah a century ago. The older brothers would usually recognize when one was from the girls or from Kol, or all three of them. That brought a weak smile to her lips.

He sighted semi defeated.

"We`ll discuss this later..." he said as he motioned towards the compound in front of them. "We`re here!"

She looked outside and was shocked by how many people there was to welcome him.

Again, she shouldn't have been surprised. This was not just a return home, this was a call for a trial. Trial of an Original that didn't happen very often. Vampires from all over the world would be gathering to witness it, the ones that were already here were probably these around the territory that had heated the rumor. There would be more coming over for the Trial date.

She could see Rebekah`s sire line waiting outside, in order. She could see Kaus`s gorgeous ex Aurora - oh how she hated her - waiting for them in front of the army, so were the other four lords. Tristan next to his sister, Magellan on the right side of the entrance, Marcel next to him and of course Lucien with his Lady next to him - looking as smug and shallow as alway.

Caroline didn't hate her, no no, she loathed her.

Deep down she knew she was wrong and that the other girl was only mean to her just because she alway insulted her and mocked her. But she couldn't bring herself to accept her. Sure she could see that the girl was kind and selfless, but to her she was one self satisfied and arrogant bitch. And she wasn't planning on changing her opinion, nohow!

It was weird that she had a better appreciation for the actual psychotic ex. Maybe it had to do with her being nuts as hell, but the one thing Aurora was not - far from it - was boring. You know what they say about the crazy ones.

The car rode past all of them and into the compound`s garage where a guard opened her door and she gracefully stepped out. Her eyes went up to notice that as in usual tradition, the Mikaelson family that were there, expected them on the inside balcony to greet them in person.

Elijah, suited as always, waited patiently with a duplicitous smile playing on his lips. Freya Mikaelson on the right hand in her usual sexy skirt, high heels, dark top, man eating smile on, and Hayley on the other looking as badass as ever in her skin tight black jeans dark colored blouse, black leather jacket and matching boots, her warrior eyes assessing the place.

This was a first time in awhile she saw the hybrid girl and she smiled up at her in a greeting manner, the smile she got back was a tight one. She looked at her as if trying to understand - so Elijah had spoken to her. Yet Hayley didn't looked as if she was judging her. She probably expected her side of the story. And she would make sure she got it. After all, she and Hayley shared an understanding.

She didn't get much time to gauge Freya`s reaction as their car rode away and the black SUV replaced it. Rebekah Mikaelson jumped out of it, chained and docile. The atmosphere in the room changed in nanoseconds. She knew then who would take who`s side and that this battle wouldn't be easy to handle. She would have more Mikaelsons to convince, not just Klaus.

She took a deep calming breath.

Welcome to the Mikaelson Court!

Welcome to hell!

"Let go of me!" Yelled the brunette as she was abruptly pushed into the conference room by Elijah. She stumbled upon her feet and turned around ready to pounce. Elijah reached out and caught her by her arms.

"Behave!" he warned.

She scoffed and with an angry shrug she released herself.

"Do not patronize me Elijah!" she growled at him as he raised both his hands indicating surrender. "I am part of this family too. Oh, wait, that's right!" she said dramatically "You two are treating family like dirt these days too, so..."

"I would suggest you take your insults down a tone or-" he yelled but was cut off.

"Or what?!" she spat back "Or what Elijah?! Will you chain me up too, throw me into a nasty cell next to Rebekah?!"

"Don`t give him any ideas, hotspot!" scoffed Caroline as she made her way into the conference room swiftly followed by Klaus who looked furious. "I`m glad to see you back and well Hayley!" she smiled weakly and the brunette returned it along with a warm surprising hug.

"I heard you were put through hell and back..." she said over her shoulders glaring at Klaus over it.

"I`m good now..." she lied with a whisper as she returned the hug, before breaking it. "Though I really need a drink if we`re gonna do this!"

As she made her way to the bar she and Rebekah had built in the right side of the room, she heard Klaus taking his chair from away from the table to sit upon.

"Now that you mention it, that would actually teach you a lesson!" Klaus commented making Caroline double her dose of bourbon knowing the storm that the brunette was about to unleash.

"Are you serious, Klaus?!" She yelled at the man who just acted as if he wasn't even paying attention, as he checked something on his iPhone. "That`s your sister you chained and paraded like an animal through the streets of New Orleans!"

"I know who she is to me little wolf!" Klaus said as if bored "I had the misfortune of tolerating her existence for over a thousand years!"

Caroline took another sip from her glass.

"Elijah!" the brunette turned to him arms crossed "Don`t you have something to say to that?!"

Elijah fixed the sleeves of his multi dollar Armani suit (or was it Hugo Boss? Never-mind!) nonchalantly and gracefully sat on the right side of the table.

HER side, the Blonde realized.

"I do." said the elder original. "She daggered me, and betrayed my brother, she deserves everything she gets!"

Hayley`s face turned into comically surprised one and Caroline welcomed the giggle that rose to her throat once more. She refilled her glass with hard liquor, ignoring the heads that turned towards her and sipped shrugging defeated.

"Yeah... Welcome to the past couple decades of my life..." she said taking another sip and turning around to lean her back against the bar. "If you`re waiting from Elijah to take anyone else`s side than Klaus` you`ll be setting yourself up for a major disappointment!"

"Pardon?" Elijah protested at the same time Hayley growled "Seriously?!"

Klaus said nothing but stared at her and she shrugged once more emptying her glass in one go.

Hayley continued yelling, kicking and screaming, Elijah took upon himself to defend his brother`s inexplicable crimes on his behalf, while Klaus continued to stare at the blonde wordlessly, time to time glaring at his cell phone. The commotion grew lauder by every passing moment and she felt like having a headache.

"Enough!" yelled finally the King seeming annoyed.

"Caroline feel free to jump in with your support any moment now!" the brunette directed her wrath towards her now.

Caroline pointed a hand at her chest as if asking 'who? me?' before answering.

"I`m quite certain that that would have the opposite outcome thank the one we both want" she mocked his words from before. "Mikaelson`s command!" she pointed at Klaus that glared back at her.

"So you won`t say anything?!" Hayley exclaimed.

"Do you really think I haven`t said everything I could have, to prevent what`s about to happen?!" she snapped at the wolf astounding them all "Rebekah is my friend too, you know!"

"One that betrayed you!" she spat suspiciously narrowing her eyes. "Is this some twisted way of yours to get back at her for revealing your and Stefan`s hiding place to Klaus centuries ago?!"

Was this what Elijah meant when he said Caroline had changed? Hayley wandered.

"Wait what?!" Caroline choked on her saliva. Since when did Hayley thought she was a vengeful bitch. And since when did she care about her opinion?! "I'm too sober for this. I need more booze!" she mumbled under her breath.

"You've had enough!" Klaus growled.

"Barely!" she growled back as she took a new bottle with her to the table and settled down in two seats away on a random chair. "I have to put up with your family drama for the rest of what seems like another century, so excuse me if I need a bottle or two of strong liquor, before I get sucked into Mikaelson drama reality world again! Filled with death, betrayal and more death!"

"That shouldn't be hard for you seeing as you`re an expert on the second field!" he growled.

"I`m not having this conversation again!" She spat at him. "And it sounds a little hypocritical coming from you all things considered!"

"Not this nonsense again!" he rolled his eyes.

"Oh of course its nonsense for you isn`t it?" she snapped ignoring the two other vampires` confused stares "The all mighty Niklaus Mikaelson is allowed to do whomever he pleases, whenever he wants, but heavens forbid I do the same! And here I thought we were equals!"

"What the hell is she talking about?!" Hayley questioned.

"Nothing!" Klaus growled at he same time Caroline mocked "Oh, don`t you know?!"

Ignoring the hybrid`s warning glares she went on "Mr Casanova over here" she pointed one accusatory finger at the hybrid "slept with your slut of a friend that pretends to be a psychologist, while what she really is, is a husband stealing, psycho bitch!"

Klaus` hand collided on the table "You will not speak about Camille in that manner!"

"Oh I`m sorry!" she seethed following suit his moves and leaning over table, rigid "I didn't want to insult your mistress! Sorry not sorry, for calling a her a who-!"

"Even if this was the matter!" Elijah intervened not liking this one bit "You would have no right to demand answers considering your-"

"I didn't talk to you Elijah!" she spat at him leaving him speechless, mouth gaping "I don`t want to hear your double standard opinions anymore!"

To say that the atmosphere was tense would be an understatement.

"Uhm... I hate to be the voice of logic over here..." said Hayley trying really hard not to laugh at the irony considering she was the one willing to start up a fight minutes ago "But maybe we need to calm down a tad..."

No one spoke, the two quarreling royals glared at each other, Caroline taking a few more theatrical gulps.

Hayley approached the table and sat at the chair between Klaus and Caroline.

"I know that we never exactly saw eye to eye Klaus..." she started and he looked at her through hooded eyes "But I think that you should listen regardless..."

"Rebekah won`t come out of this unscratched Hayley!" he cut her off.

"See?" Caroline gestured at him grumpily. "You`re wasting your breath!"

"Caroline!" Hayley scolded before turning back at Klaus approaching him as one would a raging animal "She is a Mikaelson, a part of this family! You can`t let the guards and everyone else mock the name by sending her into one of the dirty cells for even a second. She`s your sister, how can you do this to her?"

Klaus considered her words but his thoughts were interrupted by Caroline`s mocking laughter.

"You have lost seasons upon seasons Hayley!" she said with a sight "This is not the first time he sends family to a cold cell!"

They all went silent as Hayley recalled Elijah telling her that Klaus had kept her in a cell for the better part of a century.

"Maybe I was too harsh on Rebekah..." he said after a little and all of them turned an astounding glance at him. "I`ll give her the benefit of the doubt, try to believe that her intentions were pure, permit her to explain herself and maybe post pone the Trial for another month." Caroline stared with mouth gaping. And she wasn't the only one.

"Where`s the catch?!" Caroline demanded to know.

"However..." he said slowly, staring up at her through his lashes "If she tries to run away or to continue helping our enemies she`ll find herself in the very cell she`s in right now!"

Silence.

"Yeah... I`m still not convinced!" Caroline mocked playfully.

"Loose the attitude before you found yourself keeping company to the rats instead of Rebekah!" he warned.

"Woudn't be the first time!" she spat back.

Klaus leaned in over the table and glared at her.

"Keep it up love!" he warned "I dare you!"

She glared back.

"Okay, enough show of force for one evening, Klaus!" Hayley cut in before things got out of hand once more and it was her and Rebekah demanding Caroline`s return instead.

Klaus silently rose and turned away to leave, only stopping mid step to state.

"Make no mistake Caroline, I only do this because it was Hayley who asked. Just because we changed town it doesn't mean you have any more authority here, than in Mystic Falls. You will have whatever power I`ll allow you to have. Both you and Rebekah will be placed under guard as soon as you step out of the compound, with my permission" he emphasized. "I suggest you not to press your lack."

Caroline bit the inside of her chin trying very hard not to voice her witty remarks.

"We`ll have dinner at eight, don`t be late!" and with that, he left.

"Ass!" she spat as the door closed.

Throwing a disgusted glare at her Elijah stood and silently exited after a little leaving the two girls alone together.

The blonde sighted and took a gulp of alcohol from the bottle she was holding, only acknowledging her stare when the liquid burned down her neck for thousandth time.

"Well..." said the blonde "If I knew one word from you would be enough to crack him, I`d sure as hell give you a call, a long time ago!"

Hayley laughed but it didn't reach her eyes.

"I`m as surprised as you are..." she stated "I think he was just looking for an excuse to put this off..."

"So I suppose you want the whole story huh?" she asked and the brunette nodded.

She offered her the bottle saying "You`ll need it more, trust me!"

She took it and after a few sips Caroline started talking.

"We`re gonna need more than a few hours to talk about it if we`ll take it from day one..." she commented "I`ll just tell you what happened between me and Klaus, but the rest would have to wait for maybe after Rebekah is released we`ll have a proper girl`s night and tell you all about it... You`re not leaving again are you?"

Hayley shrugged looking sad.

"Where else would I go?" she whispered "This is my home, always have been!"

Caroline gave her a sad smile before she began the story from her point of view.

For some reason Thomas Wolfe`s book title kept repeating itself inside her mind the entire time.

Maybe it was the nostalgia.

Maybe it was the place.

Maybe it was the desire to go back to things as they used to be.

But one thing was certain, that she couldn't go home again and as it turned out Hayley couldn't either. They kept going back to the same place they called home once, but it didn't mean that they could go back to the same life, same home, ever again.
