When Joy first woke up, she couldn't remember where she was, but soon enough everything came back to her. Wow, she thought, too much happened. She was still wearing her ninja suit from yesterday, so she grabbed a blue sundress and started to go to the bathroom to change. In the hallway she got the idea to check on Chris.
"Sis! Tell him I won't hurt anybody!" he yelled as soon as she saw her. Jet had a small dagger pointed at the boy, who was sitting on the couch with his hands up in surrender.
"Whoah! What the heck is going on here?!"
Jet lowered his weapon and turned around to face Joy. "Did he just call you 'sis'?"
"He's my half-brother. Why are you threatening him?!"
"He attacked me and Danny last night."
"That was my brother! All I did was hold the balls," Chris hastily attempted to explain.
"Calm down, both of you!" Joy screamed.
Both boys went silent.
"I don't usually yell," Joy began, "but you both need to stop pointing fingers and listen to each other's side of the story. Chris, you go first. And put down that weapon, Jet."
Jet put down his weapon and Chris began a one-sentence version of the story he told Joy and her brother yesterday.
Why are they listening to me? Joy wondered as Chris said, "I said I didn't think it was fair to poison Kai-"
"DAD WAS POISONED!" Jet yelled in shock.
"Could you yell a bit louder? I don't think everybody heard you."
"Sorry. It's just..." Jet trailed off and suddenly ran away towards their bedroom. It was silent for a while after that.
"That's a cute dress. Are you gonna wear it?" Chris broke the silence.
Joy only nodded. She was thinking about Jet and wondering if he was O.K.
"I know that look."
"What look?"
"I see it on Mason all the time. You like him, don't you?"
"What? No!"
"Yeah, you do," he grinned, "But since you're only my half-sister I won't give you the entire crush teasing."
"I should probably go put on the dress now," Joy said as an excuse to get away. She went to the bathroom to change like she had originally intended, and a few minutes later she came out in her robin's egg blue sundress with a small bow in the back that nearly reached her knees.
"You look hotter in that than I thought you would."
"Thank you?"
"I wasn't finished. I was gonna say you should brush your hair."
Joy scowled. "That's kinda
mean."
"Who said I was nice? I only have enough of a sense of right and wrong to know killing's bad. That's why Mason has always done the fighting while all I do is steal. Mom likes him better; telekinesis is cooler than my dumb power anyway."
"What's your power?" Joy asked, thinking of her own jealousy of her sister's power.
"Like I'd tell you. We barely know each other."
"You know me well enough to call me 'sis.' "
Chris didn't respond.
"What if I told you mine?"
"Maybe."
"Telepathy. I send messages to people with my mind."
"That's still cooler than mine! All I can do is make people feel a certain way."
"What kinda ways?" Joy was both interested and a little worried.
Chris was looking down at his feet like admitting this was embarrassing, "Emotions. I can make you feel happy or sad or mad. But I haven't exactly learned how to control it." Then he looked up, smiling, "Then again, I did control it enough to make Dad feel all sympathetic and make us all leave without Jay's little girl last night ."
"You did that?" said another voice. They both turned around to see Danny.
"Yeah," Chris laughed a little bit, "But Dad probably knows it was me. If I go home he'll kill me for sabotaging the mission, but I wasn't able to stop him from getting Autumn and I have more of a conscience than Mason. "
"Only half of that sentence made sense," Danny commented.
"Mason is my brother who's better in every way because he has telekinesis and little to no sense of right and wrong except don't hurt girls-that's one of the only reasons Autumn is unharmed at the moment. Powerless, but unharmed. I'm the other reason. Mom likes him better because he'll do almost any crime she says," he said sarcastically.
"Is Kai really poisoned?" Danny said it like he was pretty worried but also curious.
"Yeah..." Chris almost trailed off, "I didn't find out until we traded stories in the car or else I would've done something, I swear."
Danny stared into Chris's eyes for a minute before finally saying, "I believe you. Do you know about an antidote for that poison?"
"Mandy probably has it somewhere at our house, but I don't know if I'd be welcome back there."
"How long have you been there?"
"Since Mom faked her death about 6 years ago."
"5 years ago! It was 5 years ago!" Henry shouted.
Joy face palmed. "How long have you been watching?"
"Since you first got up."
"Is Dad there? Did he know Mom wasn't dead?"
"I haven't seen him since our conversation yesterday!" Henry said accusingly.
"Did you know Mom wasn't dead?"
"Yeah. I told you last night."
It took Joy a minute to remember, but after that minute she said, "I thought I was dreaming."
"You were."
"What?"
"Never mind that; did you know about me and Mason, ghost boy?" Chris asked.
"Not until just now."
"Actually, what I think is most important is where Dad is. If I know him at all, he's not somewhere moping around. Henry, you and Noah should go and find him. I mean, if you're O.K. with that?"
"Aye, aye, captain. I'll have to find S.B. first though."
"Hey! I said not to call me that!" Noah's voice shouted.
"Where are you?"
"Two words, D.F: Ghost Invisible."
"No fair! I haven't learned that yet!"
"Oh well."
"How am I supposed to get home?" Chris asked, referring to the earlier conversation.
"Same way you got here."
"I can't walk that far! I'm in pretty great shape and I barely made the 10-miles-at-most here, and now you expect me to do 20 times that?!"
"I was only kidding! We'll work something out."
"Shouldn't you tell someone about all this? Maybe Zane, who's been up all night trying to help Kai?" Danny reminded them.
"That would probably be wise."
Danny laughed a bit.
"What?"
"Nothing. You wouldn't get it."
Joy was about to ask him again when Henry suddenly shouted, "I've got it!"
"Got what?"
"Maybe Dad went G.I.!"
"I was wondering how long it would take for you to suggest that," Noah said.
"What's that?"
"Ghost invisible," Henry said like it was the most obvious thing ever and all but said, 'Duh.'
"What does ghost invisible mean?"
"Completely invisible, even to other ghosts."
-Copy paste-
"Sounds cool! I would, like, seriously hurt Mom!" Chris commented.
"Except most ghosts can't directly hurt the living. Plus, why would you wanna do that?!"
"Henry, he's our half-brother. His mom is our mom."
"Oh, I get it now."
"What's so bad about your mom? Did she abuse you or something?"
"Yes, actually."
"And your dad didn't do anything about it?!"
"He couldn't, our mom had mind control."
"Did you just say what I think you said?"
"If you thought I said mind control, then yes."
"If your mom has mind control-"
"Yes, we've established this!" Chris interrupted.
"Who was that boy yesterday with the telekinesis? Is he related to you?"
"You mean my brother Mason? Yeah, of course he's related to me."
"Is there any correlation between these powers between family?"
"What does correlation mean, Mr. Big Words?"
"Connection."
"Oh. Then, yeah. In my brother's words, 'every child of Erin has mental powers.' "
"I think it was 'any child,' " Danny muttered.
"Whatever."
"Wouldn't that mean you have powers and you didn't tell us?"
"Why were you eavesdropping? And I know you two are supposed to be ninjas and all, but do you always have to sneak up on us?"
The amber ninja walked out of the shadows and shrugged.
"Besides, we've barely known you a day, and it's easier to keep some things a secret because-"
Joy stopped mid-sentence and went pale, staring into space.
"What's wrong with her?" Jet sounded worried.
"JOY!" Chris yelled.
Her skin went back to normal, and her eyes focused on Chris, "Thank you!"
"Eh, no biggie. Flashbacks, right?"
"How did you know?"
"Mason does the same thing every once in a while. All I have to do is yell or pinch him, so I figured the same would work for you."
"Didn't you say something last night about your brother doing something that would make us not trust you or something?"
"Um... Right... I was hoping you'd forget about that," he scratched the back of his head.
"Well?"
"When my brother was 5, and I don't remember this, and my mom made him do it probably, and-"
"Just tell us, please," Jet interrupted.
"Do I have to?"
"If you value your life!" Jet said, picking up his dropped dagger from earlier.
"Are you joking? I can't tell."
"Duh, of course."
"My brother... killed your father."
"What did you say?" Joy said, tears starting to form. She closed her eyes and aimed her face towards the ground.
"Either you heard me or you didn't. I'm not repeating it."
"He said-" Jet started to say.
"I know what he said," she whispered.
"Then why-"
Danny put his hand on Jet's arm. Jet stopped and looked at his friend.
"Leave it alone," he whispered in Jet's ear.
He nodded.
