Charley was wondering around the streets of the city, well she was giving herself some time actually. She promised that she would meet Lady Sansa that day, as she had been asking for her presence since she had known Charley had woken up from being unconscious. She had a tender heart, that girl, Charley thought to herself, as she walked passed the market stalls. But it had taken a few days to get the energy to walk outside the house. The training with Bronn was taking a toll on Charley, she hadn't felt this tired before, but she guessed it was her body getting used to being in action again.
Lowering her gaze onto her right wrist, which was laying in its sling, she wished her wounds would heal quickly, she was hungry to get back into action again and be able to defend herself properly; without a doubt. She wanted to feel like herself again. She wanted to be able to protect those she promised to protect, she may not be a solider, a knight, or a King, but she promised people and she intended to keep to her word. The problem was the people who hated her, they brought her down with their judgment and laughter. She tried to ignore them. Truly she had. On her detour, she felt many pair of eyes upon her, staring at her wounds, her ears burned as they whispered words as she walked passed them, but she took deep breaths and counted to ten. It was still working progress…
Her thoughts vanished as her eyes caught a sight of two litters. One she noticed as Joffery's, but the other was beautifully decorated, it was blue with white designs, which struck Charley with curiosity, as her eyes hadn't landed on it before. Yet her confusion grew more as she realized the litters were stationed in Flea Bottom; outside the orphanage. Charley pushed herself forward, her curiosity making her stand with the common folks, who was visiting the orphanage? Charley knew that everyone forgets the children who have no family, as if they had suddenly vanished from the face of the earth. Some didn't help the matter, as they got themselves into trouble, but if someone just gave them love and attention, than maybe they wouldn't steal? She wanted to believe that. Everyone deserves to be loved, right?
Seeing a young girl walk out from the orphanage, with an older Lady, Charley's thought trail stopped. She watched as the young girl spoke to the other lady in a hushed tone, telling Charley that she didn't want everyone to know. Charley took in the girl's presence, she was beautiful for sure, she looked near to her own age. She wore a blue silk dress, the bottom of it was covered with mud, but it would get a lot of money if you wanted to sell it, it would feed Charley and T for a week, or so, if she estimated it correctly.
"Who is that?" Charley asked, a woman she stood next to.
"That is Lady Margery Tyrell."
Charley stared back at the girl, with a hint of confusion. Why was she bothering with the orphanage? Joffery wouldn't be happy about this…well he wasn't happy about anything; what a sour lemon he was. He had disregarded Lady Sansa for this girl, Charley could see why, but she also knew there is two sides of a person, there was something that she didn't like about Lady Margery, but at the moment she couldn't put her finger on it.
She realized the girl was staring at her, she smiled, before walking back to her litter with her maids. Charley carried on staring after her, before staring at the orphanage, while the crowds dispatched. What interested Lady Margery to visit the orphanage? However, Charley knew it was time to visit Lady Sansa, she couldn't detain the matter any longer, it was rude to keep a Lady waiting after all, Charley thought to herself.
…
Walking through the castle's gardens, Charley's eyes landed on Lady Sansa, she looked more grown up since she saw her; it felt like a life time ago. She was standing by the water feature, it seemed she was accompanied by Lady Margery, it seemed the girls have grown close, and Charley noticed a look of awe in Sansa's blue eyes whenever she looked at Margery. Lady Sansa was beautiful too, and deserved happiness, but Charley was glad that she wasn't marrying the boy king any longer, yet that wouldn't stop him taunting her and torturing her by any lengths. She couldn't prevent the actions that happen to Sansa, but she would try to prevent any more. That was a promise.
"Charley!" Lady Sansa exclaimed happily, bringing her from her thoughts. She forced herself to smile and walk the rest of the way, she wanted to turn away and run back to her bedroom, but it was too late. She tried to ignore the looks of concern from the young girls, as their eyes landed on her injuries, but she felt her blood boil.
"Hello, My Lady." Charley made herself say, fighting the unpleasantness from her voice. She looked to her left and smiled at Lady Margery, who smiled back. "I heard the news of your engagement to the King, congratulations. We need more good news, but so far we all hear news of war, which brings its own sorrow and betrayal." Looking back at Sansa. "I see you have survived being in that room with the Queen Regent. Was she alright with you?"
"It was fine, Charley. But seeing you, I thought it was going to wash away my concern…"
"Thought I be all shiny and new again? Sorry to disappoint, My Lady, a war is a brutal thing, wounds are deep and take awfully long to mend, trust me. I'm bored staying in one room for hours on end, with nothing but my thoughts to keep me company. Sorry, it seems I was lost with my sorrow, please excuse my selfishness."
"Sit." Sansa commanded Charley and pointed to the bench that was stationed near the water feature, she obeyed and glanced at the two young girls as they sat beside her. "A lot has changed since the battle."
"I have heard."
"I am sorry that you're not in the City Watch, but those men have no morals. You are a good person, Charley."
"She couldn't stop talking about you." Lady Margery added. "Kept on saying that there needs to be more people like Charley, than she would believe that the world will be a better place."
"Thank you, but…"
"You believe in justice. You remind me of my little sister Ayra. She wanted to run around all day, to train with a sword." Sansa said, cutting Charley off, she noticed a hint of sadness, talking about family was a hard task, when you are pretending that nothing hurts no more.
"Can you still fight? I mean do you have to use your left hand now?" Margery asked with curiosity.
"Well for the time…"
"Because if you are struggling, my brother will help you, I can ask for you on your behalf!" Margery added, cutting Charley off. Charley moved herself away, noticing how close the young girl was moving towards her.
"No, thank you, but…"
"What a brilliant idea! Oh! Charley you have to meet him! He is so handsome!" Sansa added, while moving closer to her.
Having enough, Charley stood up and turned around to meet their gazes. "Thank you for the gesture, but I am perfectly fine. I am training myself, I will be using my right hand sometime soon, when I get the strength back. But I must go now, I have to go and see someone about a dog." Turning to leave, Charley let out a sigh, before moving away. She felt exhausted again, she really wanted her body to fix itself quickly, training with Bronn was taking most of her energy, as well as taking away some hours of her sleep, which in a way she was thankful for. But it had been over a month since Sam and herself had sex, she knew Sam wanted their relationship to get back to how it was, even though she told her that she needed to save the energy to get herself back onto her feet. She hated lying to Sam, but if she knew of the training, she would kill Charley.
"Charley!" She heard someone call her name. She turned her head and felt a hand wrap around her arm, before her eyes met Lady Margery's. "I have heard from sources that you once lived in an orphanage, one near here. I do a lot of charity works with those who are…"
"Lower than you and the other highborns." Charley picked up from the girl's silence. "Where did you get this…information from?"
"Sources. Don't worry, those you don't want to know of your past knows of this. I only mentioned this, because I want to continue my charity work here, in King's Landing, and well I want someone who knows the common folk, as well as lived on the other side of the line."
"Apologies, My Lady, but you are looking at the wrong person." Charley said, after a few seconds. "You don't know me, I could be a thief for you all know."
"You may be, but I don't care, that is of the past. I may be a Lady, but I am stubborn in my ways. I am certain that you are the right person for this job. Tell you what, why don't come to my chambers tonight, and tell me about your life in the orphanage, and how you came into the service of Lady Sansa."
"I don't think that would be appropriate, My Lady…"
"Nonsense! Be at chambers at eight." Lady Margery stated, before leaving Charley in the garden.
…
Charley stood in the kitchen of her house, confusion visible on her fading bruised face, as her eyes landed on Roseline, her children and T, who were sitting at the table, with food, which Charley guessed that her aunty made for them.
"Hello, Charley." Roseline greeted with a warm smile, something she had truly missed.
"Hello, T, this…"
"I know who they Charley." T said cutting her off. "When you were…asleep, Roseline brought around flowers and food, Sam had to tell me, as you somehow didn't mention it to me."
"It was when you…decided to go missing for a few days." Charley stated, being careful on what she said in front of the children. She moved to the table and Luke, the oldest boy cut her a slice of another tasty pie. "You have to teach me how to cook, Aunty, it would be a benefit for T and myself."
"That be lovely, my dear. It will let us get to know each other again. Oh how that be grand! Your mother was a brilliant cook."
"Shame that her daughter didn't pick that talent up." T said lightly, but Charley glared at him.
"Is it true, that you were stabbed, Charley?" Ryan asked, making her stare at him, with uneasiness.
"Ryan, I told you not to mention…"
"It is ok, aunty. I don't mind." Charley said with a smile, before staring back at the children. "It is true, I did get stabbed. But I am made out of tough stuff, the men had no chance!"
"Can we see it…if you don't mind?" Luke asked.
Charley lifted her shirt to reveal the wound. It was stitched up now, the bandage gone, it was time to do its healing. The stitching looked red and swore, but Charley only felt it if she did sudden movements, or any awkward positions. "It's not very exciting, I know but…" Charley said, but she saw awe in the young children's eyes.
"Well, I think that is enough, children. It's time to go." Roseline told her children.
Charley lowered her shirt and looked up to her aunty who was standing up. "You don't have to…you can stay for another hour or so, I don't mind."
"No, I have stayed longer than I planned. I must be preparing for John's dinner, as well as the children's. The food won't cook itself."
"Well, thank you for visiting, and for the flowers and the food. I am sorry, I haven't been much company." Walking them to the door, Charley felt a small amount of the weight crumble from her shoulders. She had yearned to be part as something whole, was this her chance? She paused, as she felt many arms wrap around her waist, she looked down and found the children hugging her with smiles on their young faces.
"You should go back to bed, you look exhausted, my dear." Roseline stated, as her children walked out the door. She smiled at T, who stayed at the table, before staring back at Charley, to add in a low tone: "I am happy that you are back in our lives, I truly mean that, my dear. That day you left, I felt like a part of me went with you. Your parents would have been proud of you, like I am."
Charley was left by door by herself. She watched as Roseline and the children disappear around the corner, before she dared herself to let out a breath. No one had ever told her that before, expect Mr. Stone, but she guessed that he said to every child to make them feel special. She wanted to believe the words, but looking down at herself, she doubted that her parents would be so proud of her, if they and Lady Sansa knew what she had to do to survive. How many had she killed since she left King's Landing.
"I am sorry." Charley stated out loud, while turning to face her brother, who seemed not to move a muscle. "For everything. I didn't have time to tell you about…them before the battle, and well while I am being honest, I have forgotten about them since I woke up, due to my thoughts being elsewhere."
"Wondering when I am going to kill you?"
"You heard all what I told Bronn, did you?" Charley asked in reply. Letting out a sigh, she moved back to the table and sat down on a chair opposite T. "I should have come out straight with you brother, but I do not know, I cannot think of any more excuses."
"That is a first." T remarked with a smile.
"I am being serious T."
"So are my. I know you have always been weary of me, you forget I have seen you in your highest moments and witnessed you in your low points. As I stated in my drunken rage, I was always there for you, Charley, no matter what the situation was, but I forgot to mention that you did the same for me. You protected me from others, as well as the law, and witnessed me as a monster and a weakling." T explained, before taking a sip of water from his cup. "We have been through a lot; the both of us. Yet we tackle things differently. You have the brains, while I use my fists. We make a perfect match maybe that is what Mr. Stone saw in us?"
Charley just stared at her brother, her mind flickering to the first days of being left alone in the world. T had so much hope in the world, she could hear it in his voice at times still, but she had noticed within the ten years how much hope he had lost. Together they have seen much blood spilled, mostly by their hands, as well as their fingers had been sticky; to steal from those who were too drunk to notice, or looked to be rich enough and could spare a few coins. Many times they'd have been locked up behind bars, only to escape with their life's. Scars burned onto their skin. They had their share of betrayal; torture; near death experiences; wounds; lust and pain that none talked about. From different families and backgrounds, but the wild truly brought them closer and both would protect one another as siblings; there was no changing that. Charley realized that before darkness took her at the battle of Blackwater Bay, T stayed with her until she slipped into the darkness; his worry and heartache clear to see, his guilt over powered him. In addition to when she was unconscious, he had been looking over her day and night with Sam, guilt riddling him, apparently he refused to eat and let other people to look after her; afraid that he would lose her.
"I have been asked to share our experience of the life we had in the orphanage, and our time after." Charley stated, as T moved the plates to the sink; ready to wash them. She noticed his muscles tensed, but he didn't say anything. "I believe that Lady Magarey, who asked me of this, won't use it against us, or announce the truth. Apparently she had done a lot of charity work, back when she lived in Highgardens, and she wishes to continue it here."
"Are you going to tell her?"
"I did decline, but she is…passionate about this. She wants someone who knows the life that the children are going through, although everyone's story is different."
"Are you going to tell her the truth?"
Charley opened her mouth to reply, but she was unsure. She had kept thinking it over, since the conversation, but she hadn't come to a conclusion. She knew the problem of telling the truth, she couldn't expose the events that T and herself have seen and been through; it weren't a pretty thing to tell. Also it would feel like betrayal, hence why she told her brother of the request, she weren't the only one who experienced the pain of being out casted; though Magarey didn't know that yet… well Charley guessed she didn't.
"Charley?" T called, wanting to know her answer.
"I-I don't know."
"How did you she know that you lived in the orphanage?"
"Produced by sources; sources which I don't know. The only people who know of our past is Bronn, Sam, Tyrion, Allen and Sansa, none of them would tell; didn't matter what the price is. Not all of them know exactly know the whole truth either."
"Still it is too many than we like to know of our past and business."
"We have grown up not to trust anyone…maybe we should change that?" Charley asked after a few seconds of silence.
"We trust no one for a reason, Charley. Anxious if they tell others of the truth, before killing us."
"I know, I know. But maybe we give this City a chance?"
"The tables have simply turned." T replied, before letting out a sigh. He continued to stare at Charley, thinking over what she had said. "You have people who love you, I understand that, but you also have people who hate you, which tips the scales for you?"
"Most probably the latter." Charley declared sadly, while her mind went onto Andrew. "But I can deal with them…just not at the moment. I hate not be able to express myself, I promised Sam that I will tell her the truth, although in my own time. I owe her that much, T. I do love her."
"That is what you said about the first one."
"Please don't bring that up again, I made a mistake, how did I know she would expose us like that?"
"How do you know…"
"Don't you dare, say that Sam will do the same! She wouldn't! I just know. She has protected me ever since we met and stuck by me and my selfish ways." Charley stated angrily, cutting T off. "I know I don't deserve happiness, but I cannot just leave her, nor Sansa; I promised them that I would protect them. I owe them that, I cannot go down into that cycle of letting others down again." She let out a sigh, before returning to scratch Shadow behind his ear. "I know I am going back on what we promised, but maybe we need to change and adapt into the world?"
"You have turned into them." T stated with a note of realization.
"Or I have come to my senses. I worked for the law, and witnessed, as well as suffer actions of men who think that are top of everyone; they beat us until we die, or we become them."
"There is another way…"
"To run away." Charley added.
Charley watched as T started to pace up and down the kitchen, apprehension lighted his eyes, as well as anger; she knew he was fighting himself. She had seen it many times before. Although he killed many; inside it seemed he was losing himself with the feelings he buried.
"You can tell her about the orphanage, although each child's life is different. But after…it's up to you." T finally stated, before leaving Charley with Shadow in the kitchen.
"Thank you for nothing, brother." She muttered, before letting out a heavy sigh. She still had hours until she could make up her decision, yet what troubled her the most was that she promised Sam that she was going to tell her the truth, could she tell Lady Margery first? "What are my going to do, Boy?" She asked Shadow.
