Maddie stood in the forest, panic slowly taking over her body… she could hear rustling all around her and she could feel her heart beating faster by the second. She was now sure that she was not alone, and being so far away from the camp, she knew she had no chance of getting back and very little chance of anyone coming to save her… Especially as her and Rhydian's mind convocations had stopped working since she woke up.
She heard a noise straight behind her and spun around, only to be caught from behind and have a huge hand placed violently over her mouth… No matter how loud she screamed, almost no sound could be heard over the muffle of the hand.
Meanwhile, Rhydian was still running as fast as he could through the forest. He wasn't sure exactly where he was going, but there was something inside of him pulling him along, hopefully pulling him towards Maddie. He just hoped that he wouldn't be too late.
Maddie continued to struggle against the hand as she heard blood pumping in her ears. This could really be the end of her couldn't it? Attacked it the forest by a stranger, with nobody to save her. Everything was getting too much, he hand over her mouth was cutting off her air and she was beginning to lose the will to fight against the stranger and the darkness that was closing around her as she struggled for breath…
She felt a different hand this time yanking on her hair… she remembered someone doing that to her once, but she couldn't quite remember. Soon more and more hits came and began to have flash backs of being in a den and being beaten…. But by who? And when?
She began to feel dizzy when the whole memory flashed into her head. The horrible memory. With the fear of what was going on in her head along with what was going on in real life she almost passed out with pure fear. Everything was getting too much when suddenly she felt the hand get ripped for her mouth and the hands that had been attacking her thrown away.
She broke down in tears and dropped to the ground only to be picked up again and held against saviour's body as she felt whoever it was begin to run with her, her body racked with sobs and she felt everything she had forgotten. She felt violated, disgusting, dirty and who knows what else. Did it really happen? Was it her imagination? She didn't see anyone else in the memory apart from the mystery figure, so who was going to be able to tell her if it happened or not?
As she was carried slowly back to camp, with the saviour (who she had now discovered was Rhydian by the woody, homely smell of his clothes) whispering sweet nothings about how she was going to be fine into her ears, she hoped and prayed that the terrible memory, had not really been a memory…
Soon, the couple were back at the camp and Maddie still hadn't managed to stop crying. Every time she tried to stop, she remembered what she had seen and the tears would start flowing out of her eyes and the whole proses would start again.
"Oh my God! Maddie what is wrong? What happened Rhydian? Is she hurt?" Emma yelled as, hurling questions at Rhydian as he emerged out of the dense tree line with Maddie still sobbing in his arms.
The whole pack were gathered together at the edge of the forest, all too scared to go in. They had gathered together when they heard that Maddie was missing and that Rhydian had gone mental and was running through the forest like a mad man. The sorry had changed a bit as it got passed around the camp.
"When I got to her Anthony and Derek were beating her up, I threw them off and I think I might have knocked Derek out, I didn't stay around to check. She was it tears, I don't know what is wrong, I don't know if it was the punches or what but she is really not right." Rhydian said frantically trying his best to get all the words out as quickly as possible…
"Come on, let's take her to the den, having everyone out her gaping at her is not going to make her feel any better." Emma reply, a worried tone in her voice as Dan and the rest of the pack looked on, a look of horror on their faces.
Carefully, Rhydian carried Maddie into her den, the sobs now calming to faint crying. He sat down against the muddy wall with Maddie still in his arms and slowly sat her up until her head the tucked into the crook of neck. Safe from the world.
"Shh, Mads, don't cry. Please. I hate it when you cry. Just tell me what's wrong. I will fix it please!" Rhydian said, his voice catching as he trying to keep his own emotions at bay.
"You can't! Nobody ever will be able to!" Maddie hiccupped, tears still falling down her face as she buried it back into Rhydian. Emma watched on helplessly, she knew that right now, the only person that Maddie needed was already there with here. It upset her that that person wasn't her anymore.
"Tell me! Was it Anthony and Derek beating you up or something else? Let me help you…" Rhydian pleaded.
"The attack—I saw it—and it was so horrible. I couldn't look away… It was me." Maddie cried very quickly breaking down into sobs again.
"Shh, slow down and say it again." Rhydian pushed
"The attack. It reminded me of something, I don't know what. I was in a den and there was a man he… he…" Maddie said, the first part of her sentence only slightly shaky, but she soon broke down crying again.
"Shhh. Listen, you are really tired, we are going to get you checked out by the elders tomorrow but right now, you need to sleep and relax. I will stay with you I promise." Rhydian whispered comfortingly.
Maddie no longer trusted her voice not to break, so she gave a quick nod in reply before slowly drifting asleep in Rhydian's arms.
The next morning, Rhydian gently shook Maddie awake. "Mads, babe, you need to get up, we are going to go and see the Elders today so we get make sure you are alright and try and work out if there is anything else wrong…" he said quietly, not wanting send Maddie into another panic. And after a bit more persuading she finally got up.
"Rhydian…" Maddie said quietly, trying to get Rhydian's attention as he bent down to tie up the laces of his combat boots.
"Yeah babe?" Rhydian replied standing up with a cheery jump.
"I don't want to go to the elders. They won't believe me. I think I just need to tell you what is going on. I know you'll believe me." She said quietly, talking through the speech just as she had practised.
"Mads? What are you talking about? You know you can tell me anything and I swear I will always believe you. Always." Rhydian said gently with a small smile, trying to pry what was going on out of Maddie without her really knowing.
Maddie took a deep breath before replying. "You were telling me about Owen, how he took me away and how he kept me in his den and beat me. But I couldn't remember any of it" Rhydian nodded "Well, I think I remember exactly what he did and you are really not going to like it if I am right." Maddie said before launching into what the horrific memory had showed her the day before.
"He did what!" Rhydian yelled, anger seeping out of him through his whole body. He couldn't hold it together if what his girlfriend was saying was true.
"That's what happened in the vision, it was set off by Anthony and Derek yesterday attacking me, but I could only see one figure, I wasn't sure who it was to begin with but I am sure it was him…" Maddie said, now with tears streaming down her face. She thought that Rhydian would accept her, but what if he didn't believe her and she was going to be left with everything laughing at her…
"I'm kill him. We're gonna re-trail him and then I will kill him." Rhydian said, blue veins already forming under his skin.
"Rhydian, you need to calm down. Please." Maddie said getting more and more upset by the minute.
"We are going to go and see the elders right now and get this all sorted out. Right now." Rhydian said, still as angry as before pulling Maddie out of the dens.
Soon, they were at the elders section on the camp. He marched into the camp still pulling Maddie along with him. He couldn't believe this had happened to his girlfriend!
"What can we do for you today Rhydian?" The elders asked as they sat it their den with Ceri, Emma and Dan, discussing what they were going to do about the neighbouring pack.
"We need to re-trail Owen. Maddie remembers what he did to her." Rhydian said to the Elders, a slightly mad look still in his eyes.
"That's brilliant! We can finally give him what he deserves! What happened Maddie?" Emma said excitedly.
But before Emma got her answer, she was interrupted by Ceri "I'm sorry Rhydian, I'm not sure if we can do that or not. What, may I ask, did Owen do to Madeline?" in a patronising tone.
Rhydian looked over at Maddie, telling her to explain with his eyes, but to his disappointment she ran out of the den say how she couldn't say because everyone will hate her and not believe her, leaving Rhydian to explain exactly how Owen had raped his girlfriend.
"I'm sorry Rhydian, but we have no proof that what you say is true. And anyway, you don't have the power to order a trail anymore, you are no longer the alpha, that duty has been handed over to your mother" One of the elders said with Ceri behind him, a small smile on her face. She was in charge for one and she could do what she wanted.
Quickly, Emma left the den to go and find her daughter, she couldn't believe that this had happened to her little cub, it was so wrong.
"You have to believe me, I wouldn't lie about something like this. You saw how upset Maddie is and we all know how shit her acting is. She isn't putting it on. Please, there must be something we can do! Is there anything that could be wrong with her because of this?" Rhydian said getting cross with the Elders lack of help.
"Well." Ceri began "You know how wolf bloods find a mate when they are 18 and then stay with them, and how some couples know that they are mates before they are of age?"
"Yes, I know all that. Just get on with it" Said Rhydian impatiently.
"Well, normally people can't be mated before then but, it can be forced." Ceri continued. The tension in the room building up with every word she spoke.
"What? How can you force a mating? I thought your mate was your mate and that was that?" Rhydian said getting more and more confused.
"People can force their mating by forcing a wolfblood to sleep with them. It only works when the attacked in younger then eighteen and the attacker is over eighteen and the attacker has had their real mate reject them. The couple will never be true mates, but they will be bound together – and other wolves are not allowed to mate with them…" Ceri continued
"Well how do we break it then? I can't leave them, together, this is totally ridicules that some monster is mated to my girlfriend. I won't let him get away with it!" Rhydian asked.
"That's the problem see Rhydian… you can't break up a mated couple, no matter whether the couple are meant to be together or not… it's just how the wolf blood world works. One bound, always bound. Then only thing that can break the couple up is one or both of the dying." The Elder said, trying to calm Rhydian down. It wasn't working.
"Well if I have to kill him, I will." Rhydian said, returning to his no non-sense attitude.
"If you kill him you will be put on trial and punished the same as anyone else who has committed a murder, I am very sorry Rhydian, but there really is nothing you can do…" The elder said sadly.
With that, Rhydian stormed out of the elders den felling totally furious. How could this be possible? The girl he loved to be mated to a total idiot that probably didn't even know what he had done any way? This was ridiculous!
He was still as angry when he found Maddie curled up in their den, with her mother by her side as she cried and cried. But as soon as Rhydian saw her, all his anger faded away, leaving only pure sympathy. If he was finding this hard to cope with, how must she been feeling?
"Maddie, I'm so sorry baby. The whole time I have been worrying about what this means for me. It's you I should be worrying about. I just couldn't help it. I'm never going to let anything like this ever happen again I swear." Rhydian said as he sat down, pulling Maddie gently onto his lap.
"It's alright. I shouldn't be such a… *sniff* baby" Maddie whispered, her face buried in the nape of Rhydian's neck as Emma watched on silently.
"No. It isn't alright. I was the worst boyfriend imaginable. But it's going to be alright. And don't ever say you acted like a baby Mads. If this had happened to anyone else they would have been a wreck by now, but you, as always, are trying to stay strong. You are my world Mads. You just amaze me, every single day." Rhydian said beginning to get emotional himself.
"I love you." Maddie gently whispered before continuing "What did the Elders say?"
"In a nutshell?" Rhydian asked trying to lighten the blow.
"Please"
"Basically, Owen forced you to mate with him."
Maddie burst into tears as Rhydian words made sense in her head. Because now it was impossible to have the house they had always wanted, the kids they had always wanted and the perfect life they had always wanted. Because she was mated to Owen.
