It was only 9pm but it was such a long day, Dean tried to turn in early but he couldn't sleep, he kept thinking about Lisa. Could it work if they both tried? After they got Sam's soul back and after they solved the Penny case, is it possible that he and Lisa could work something if they tried really hard? It would be nice to have some help with Penny. What did he know about raising a girl? He still had a few years but soon enough there would be talks about boy problems and bra shopping and… Dean shut his eyes… That time of the month.
Dean flicked on his light and reached for his jeans, he didn't need a night to think about it, he and Lisa would make it work. He tromped down the stairs and grabbed his keys off of the coffee table in the living room. Sam was sitting on the couch watching television and drinking a beer.
"Going somewhere?" He asked craning his neck up to see
"Yeah. I'm just going to Lisa's, I'll be back soon."
"Isn't she all the way in Michigan?"
"No, we moved after that whole Jinn thing. Bye" Dean said and hurried out of the door.
Dean climbed the warm familiar doorsteps and knocked on the front door. He saw the hallway light flick on and heard footsteps stomp lightly towards the doorway, the locks unclicked, and the door swung open. Lisa smiled awkwardly at him and furrowed her brow.
"Hello?"
"Hey Lisa" Dean smiled "I thought about what you said and I'm in. Let's start over"
"Uh. I'm sorry" She grimaced "Have we met?"
"Cute. Okay, Hi, I'm Dean" He stuck out a hand and she shook it uncomfortably. She's really committed to this clean slate thing, he thought.
"Okay Dean, is there something I can help you with?"
"What?"
"I don't know; have we met before? At a party maybe?"
"Okay, now I'm confused" Dean smirked
"Me too" She laughed
"Which part are we starting over from exactly? Because I'm not sure exactly where we are"
Lisa shook her head "Dean, I'm sorry. I really don't know what you're talking about"
"You said this afternoon that you wanted to start over. Here I am saying okay, I'm ready to give it a shot…"
"I'm sorry, I think you have me mistaken for someone else. I was with my son all day today"
"No, you dropped Ben off at practice-"
"Hold on a second" Lisa snapped and crossed her arms "How do you know my son?"
"Look Lisa, I'm all for this whole fresh start thing but this is a little-"
"Listen, Dean is it?"
Dean just blinked irritably at her, was she really going to keep this up?
"I don't know who you are or how you know me but I need you to leave right now"
"Lisa, stop it okay. It was cute at first but this is a little overkill"
"I want you to listen very closely. I don't know who you are" Her eyes were wild and scared. What the hell is going on here? He saw Ben peeking out a few paces behind Lisa.
"Ben!" Dean called to him "Ben could you please talk to-"
"I need you to leave right now!" Lisa said backing farther into the house
"Mom, who is that guy?" He asked anxiously
"Lisa, will you give me a minute?" Dean said quickly "Okay? You know me. We lived together for a year"
"I'm giving you five seconds to get off of my property before I call the cops"
"Lisa, think about it, how would I know all this stuff about you? You used to teach yoga, uh… Your favorite color is purple, your favorite smell is lilac, and you're allergic to mushrooms. You have a birthmark on your left inner thigh that looks almost like a butterfly-"
"What are you, stalking me?" She shrieked
"What? No!"
"You're sick!" She spat "Ben! Ben, get me the phone!" She shouted before slamming the door shut.
Dean stood stunned for a few seconds before it registered that she was really about to call the police. He ran to the car and sped off before she could get a reading on the license plate. What the hell just happened? What just happened? She looked at him like she never laid eyes on him before. Ben didn't recognize him at all. What happened to them?
He pulled into the driveway and stormed inside. Sam wasn't on the couch; maybe he had finally gone to sleep. Dean went into the kitchen and grabbed the whiskey from the cabinets. He lined the bottom of a glass and took a shot and filled it again half way. He was about five shots in when the light came on; he spun around and saw Penny standing in the doorway still in her nightie, rubbing her eye with one fist and clenching on to her stuffed animal with the other.
"Penny, what are you doing up? It's past your bedtime." He said gruffly
"What's wrong daddy?"
"Nothing. Just" He blinked hard starting to feel the effects of the liquor "Just go back to bed okay honey?"
Penny just stood there watching him in weary confusion.
"Now Penny. Go" He ordered
"Will you read me a story?"
"I read you a story when I sent you to bed the first time. What was our deal? You get to bed on time and I read you a story. Now it's…" Dean looked down at his watch
"Are you mad Daddy?"
"No. I'm not mad, I want you to go to bed right now" He said firmly
Penny backed away slowly
"I mean it, go" He waved her away with the back of his hand and turned back around and filled his glass
"What's going on?" Sam asked from behind him, Dean turned back and saw him standing where Penny used to be.
"She gone?"
"Who Penny? She just went upstairs. What's wrong?"
"She doesn't remember me Sam"
"Who Penny?"
Dean looked at Sam with a straight face "No not Penny. Lisa"
"What do you mean she doesn't remember you?"
"I mean I went her house and she looked at me like I had three freaking heads. She had no idea who I was." He said draining the liquid into his mouth
"You mean like, what, amnesia?" Sam squinted
"I don't know dude. She said she was hanging out with Ben all day but she wasn't. She was with me"
"Are you sure she wasn't faking it?"
"What are you saying? That she faked not knowing me just to get rid of me?"
Sam shrugged "Is it possible?"
"Well first of all, she's the one who called me so that wouldn't make any sense and second of all, that look in her eyes, no, you couldn't fake that fear"
"We having a family meeting in here or something?" Bobby asked strolling up
"Dean just saw Lisa" Sam said
"And?"
"And she didn't remember him"
"What like amnesia?"
"Whatever it is ain't sitting right with me" Dean grumbled
"You think maybe it's something supernatural?" Sam shrugged
Dean shook his head "I don't know. Maybe. Nothing makes sense. I was with her this afternoon. She said she wanted to start off on a clean slate. I thought she was joking at first you know? Being overly literal but…"
"Daddy?" Penny called from the stairs. Dean put the bottle and glass back down on the counter and walked over
"Penny, what did I say?"
"But…"
"What did I say Penny? I said go to bed right?"
"Yes but…"
"Our deal was, I read you a story and you go to bed on time, I kept my end of the deal and you didn't"
"But Daddy"
"No but's Penny. You have until the count of five to get back into your bed or guess who isn't getting a bedtime story next time?"
"But-"
"One."
Penny's eyes shot open and she ran up the stairs. Dean heaved a sigh and walked back into the kitchen.
"What did she want?" Bobby asked
"To be awake. I swear the kid avoids sleep like it's out to get her" Dean said and froze "Give me a minute" He said and rushed up the stairs into Penny's room. She was lying in the bed with her blankets up to her neck.
"Hey" He said softly and sat next to her on the bed "Just wanted to tuck you in and say goodnight"
"Goodnight"
"Do you have something you wanted to say before you sleep?"
"Yes, the lady was here but she's gone now"
"What?" Dean gaped and leapt off the bed "She was here? Why didn't you tell me?"
"I tried to Daddy but you weren't going to read the princess and the pea"
Dean grabbed his hair with both hands. It was true, she was trying to talk to him but he wouldn't listen. Now this thing was gone. He switched on the light and began sweeping the room for evidence.
"She's already gone daddy"
"Did she say anything to you?"
"She wanted me to tell you that um, now Lisa has a fresh start and so do you"
Dean could feel his skin begin to prickle under his clothes as his blood ran hot with anger and adrenaline "That little bitch" He hissed "Penny, earmuffs"
Penny put her hands over her ears
"Where are you bitch?" He said into the air "Come out! I know you're here, stalking me, sneaking into my kid's room at night. I don't know what your end game is but I'll find you" He growled "And when I do, you're going to regret the day you decided to mess with this family do you understand me?"
Dean walked over to the bed, lifted Penny into his arms, and walked out of the room. She was never leaving his sight again.
