A/N: Well, here's another chapter. I don't know how I really feel about this one, but I think it's okay. I kind of want to start putting in more of the other teens, so Astrid's in this one. However, I refuse to let her and Camicazi be rivals. Let me know what you think!
Judgement
Camicazi huffed impatiently as her fingers fumbled with the buckle of her saddle. Just as she was about to cinch it tight, her Changewing suddenly decided to jump over to the side, causing the buckle to be pulled completely out of her hands.
"Hold still Evan! They're going to be here any minute!" Camicazi chastised her dragon.
Today was the day that all the main dragon riders from Berk were coming to Bog Island to discuss how the integration of the dragons was going. They had been doing this once a year for four years now, and Camicazi still got excited each time.
For one thing, it was another chance to see her best friend, as well as the other teens she had become friendly with since the peace. Ever since Hiccup had defeated the Red Death, he had become friends with the other kids his age on Berk, and Camicazi had been forced to get to know them better. Much to her surprise, they weren't that bad.
For another, unlike other inter-tribal meetings, the adults let them handle it themselves, stating that their generation was the future of the tribe. Camicazi didn't care why they did it as long as it meant more freedom for her.
After much huffing and puffing, Camicazi finally managed to get Evan's saddle on her. She had just decided to do a lap around the island while she was waiting, when suddenly Camicazi heard a commotion coming from down by the docks. She peered over Evan's back to try to get a better view, and realized that while she had been preoccupied with her fidgety dragon, all of the Hooligan's had arrived.
"Now you've done it," she berated Evan. "They're already here!" She hopped on her Changewing's back and started heading down towards the docks, upset that she hadn't been there the moment they arrived. As there was already a crowd growing around them, she decided to land a little ways away since it would be easier to maneuver around everybody on foot.
However, before she could even start trying to navigate the crown, a very angry Astrid came stomping up towards her.
"Uh, hey Astrid, how are y- hey! What are you doing!?" Camicazi exclaimed as the girl painfully grabbed her arm and started dragging her towards the Hooligans.
Despite her protests, Astrid continued their march down the dock, but did loosen her death grip on Camicazi's arm a bit. "I need you to talk some sense into Hiccup. He's being a stubborn idiot and won't listen to me. But I figure if both his girlfriend and his best friend tell him he's being a stubborn idiot, maybe he might start being rational again."
Camicazi frowned. "Exactly how bad is it for you to come to me as the voice of reason?"
"It's just…I mean…what even…ugh." Astrid stammered frustratedly. "Right now, I trust your judgement more than his." They finally reached the spot where everyone was standing around, and Camicazi began searching for Hiccup.
"That," Astrid said emphatically, pointing at someone standing in the middle of the group, "is the issue." The person turned around, and Camicazi realized with a start that it was in fact Hiccup.
"Hey! Camicazi! How are you?" he called over to her, smiling. Camicazi could only stare in shocked silence. Unperturbed by her lack of response, he simply gestured to himself and said, "What do you think?"
Camicazi's mouth hung open, poised to ask a question that just wouldn't come to her. She glanced over Astrid, trying to silently ask her what was going on. The girl merely gestured towards Hiccup, inviting Camicazi to answer his question.
She couldn't believe what she was seeing. Sure, all Vikings wore some form of armor, but this… it… why… what was with all the leather?
Camicazi looked her friend up and down. His outfit was like nothing she had ever seen before. There were belts and buckles, straps and loops, and, above all, there was leather. It looked like an entire herd of yaks had died and he tanned all their hides and used them to clothe himself. It even went down the sides of his legs. Why? Why would a person dress in so much leather? It made no sense.
And why did he need all those straps and buckles? What purpose did they serve exactly? He had two around his middle and then three or four more around his shoulder. He had clearly put a lot of effort into the outfit, so it couldn't be so ill fitting that it needed that much reinforcement to stay on. How did he even get in and out of that? It must take hours. What did he do when he needed to go to the bathroom?
She continued to stare, trying to make sense of what he was wearing. Was that leather made to look like dragon scales? And how many layers was he wearing? She could see at least two layers of armor, and possibly two shirts underneath that. Well, at least he was well prepared for the cold, she supposed. But seriously, four layers?
The more she looked at it, the less sense it made.
"Well?" Hiccup asked cheerily, completely unaware of Camicazi's increasing confusion.
"Ridiculous," she said at last. It was the only word she could think of to describe it. "Completely and utterly ridiculous."
"Oh come on," Hiccup said rolling his eyes and throwing back his head. "You sound like Astrid. This outfit is amazing!"
Camicazi just continued to look at him in disbelief. "What am I even looking at?"
"What you're looking at," Astrid said exasperatedly, "is what Hiccup had decided will be his everyday wear from now on." Camicazi now understood why Astrid was so adamant that she talk to Hiccup. No doubt the girl had been arguing with him for days about this and needed reinforcements.
"What's this?" Camicazi asked as she flipped some metal thingy on his arm.
"A compass."
"And you felt the need to attach it to your arm?" Camicazi glanced over to Astrid, giving her a look that screamed 'Is he for real?'
"Yeah, that way it's right next to my maps!"
"Your maps?" Camicazi deadpanned.
"Yeah! Look at this!" Hiccup exclaimed as he lifted a flap on his bracers to reveal several maps stored underneath.
"Again, you felt the need to attach this to your arm?"
"But it's so convenient there," Hiccup said defensively, sensing her incredulity. By now most of the crowd had dispersed, leaving only the three of them on the docks.
Camicazi sighed. She and Astrid could argue with him until Ragnarok, but Hiccup was clearly already too attached to his new clothes to listen to them. She shot Astrid an apologetic look. "Well Hiccup, if you want to wear your ridiculous outfit, I won't stop you. Just so long as you know that it is, in fact, ridiculous."
"Ridiculous and practical."
"But still ridiculous," Astrid clarified. "Thanks for trying Camicazi. I knew it was a long shot."
"Oh, come on you guys. You haven't even seen the best part!"
"What? Does it have a compartment to keep books and pencils as well?" Camicazi asked sarcastically.
"Yes, but that's not what I'm talking about." Hiccup bent over and put his arms through some loops around his legs that Camicazi had yet to figure out the use of. He then stood upright, pulling the loops with him and revealing two pieces of material stretching from his legs to his arms like wings. "I made a flying suit!"
Astrid and Camicazi looked at each other before slowly turning back to Hiccup. "What… is that?" Camicazi managed to say.
"Well, I haven't tested it yet, but what's supposed to happen is I jump off of Toothless while we're in the air, pull the straps, and then the material catches the wind and I can glide!" Hiccup said grinning from ear to ear, clearly very proud of himself.
"And you thought this was a… good… idea?" Astrid asked.
"Um, yes?" Hiccup said uncertainly. This was clearly not the reaction he had been hoping for.
"No. Absolutely not. There is no way in Hel you are doing that. You'll get yourself killed." Astrid said firmly.
"But it's perfectly safe!" Hiccup insisted.
"You just said you haven't tested it yet," Camicazi interjected.
"Not helping."
"Look," Astrid said. "I will not allow you to go jumping off a dragon with only a thin piece of material that may or may not keep you from plummeting to your death!"
"Oh yeah," Hiccup said, puffing up a bit. "And how do you plan to stop me?"
Astrid gave him a cold look. "Let me put it to you this way. If you do go ahead with this, everyone in the village will find out what really happened last Snoggletog when Gobber found a reindeer and a yak in the kitchen eating the pies."
Camicazi snorted in amusement. Hiccup had already told her the story, so she knew just how badly Astrid had him beat. She decided it would probably be best just to stay out of this. Although…
"Low blow, Astrid," he said simply.
"Whatever it takes to keep you alive," she responded, smiling.
"You know," Camicazi said, turning towards Astrid, "how can you really be sure he doesn't just do it and not tell you?"
"Huh?"
"I mean, what's stopping him from just flying out somewhere, testing his suit, and then just never mentioning it? Assuming he lives of course," Camicazi elaborated.
Astrid gave Hiccup a suspicious look. "That does sound like something he would do. He did keep an entire night fury a secret for several weeks."
"If you really want to keep him from meeting an early death, you should have him take off the wings completely and give them to one of us for safe keeping. That way he can't escape with them to test them out."
"That's an excellent idea Camicazi," Astrid said. "You heard her Hiccup, give us the flying suit."
Hiccup grumbled but complied, unhooking the wings and sliding them off of his legs. "Here," he said, thrusting the equipment into Camicazi's arms.
"Come on, Hiccup. This is for your own good," Astrid said placatingly. "Now come on, we have some time before the actual meeting starts. Let's go do something that won't end up getting either of us sent to Valhalla early." She turned around and motioned for Hiccup to follow her.
As he went to go past Camicazi, she grabbed his arm. "Thanks for the flight suit; I'll let you know how it works," she whispered devilishly into his ear. Hiccup's eyes grew wide as saucers as he realized what Camicazi had done and what she was going to do, but she was off and running before he had a chance to react.
Two hours later as the meeting was about to start, Camicazi walked in dripping wet, followed by her dragon Evan, and plopped down sullenly next to Hiccup.
"It didn't work."
A/N: Just as a side note, I love Hiccup's new outfit, but I truly believe that everyone else in the HTTYD universe would think it's ridiculous.
Also, to the guest reviewer who asked, I actually made my username using the dragon language from the game Skyrim. You can go to wiki/Dragon_Language if you want to know more about it or if you want to try to translate my username to figure out what it means.
