Right & Wrong
Chapter 14

Beck parked his car a block away from the beach. That way Avery wouldn't be able to see his car and suspect that it was his. He walked quickly back to the place where he had seen Avery and Tanner walk in. He had his shades on and his hair hid under an old baseball cap he found in his car. Beck's disguise made sure that it wasn't easy for paparazzi or Avery and Tanner to recognize him. Upon entering he instantly found Avery and Tanner.

The two of them were on the deck at the beach. They were seated at a table for two and Avery was laughing at something Tanner had said. The deck was set up into a buffet for the night. There were plates of salads, mashed potato's, stakes and more throughout the long white table. Beck pulled the cap down lower over his eyes and sat at a table close enough to hear what Tanner and Avery were saying.

"What will we be doing after we eat?" Beck heard Avery ask.

"I was hoping we can walk along the beach." Tanner suggested. "Just talk."

Beck hoped that was all they would be doing. He noticed under the table how Tanner's foot was brushing up against Avery's ankle intentionally. What a guy move. Beck refrained from scowling as Avery blushed. "That sounds good. Do you want to get our food now?"

Tanner nodded and the two of them got up to go get something to eat. Beck followed them and grabbed a plate like his daughter and her date did. Lucky for him, he was hungry and instantly filled his plate with different types of meat.

"I thought you were a vegetarian?" Tanner asked curiously. Beck glanced at Avery's plate and found a chicken leg with other meat foods on there. He smirked to himself. She did have her mother's blood after all. No one related to Jade could resist meat for that long.

"Yeah, that kind of didn't work out." Avery laughed uneasily.

"Cool," Tanner smiled at her, "I once tried to be a vegetarian, but couldn't make it."

Avery laughed and smiled brightly. When the two had finished they headed back to their table. Beck, who wasn't quite done grabbing his food, glanced over his shoulder to see what the two were doing. Tanner had slung his arm over Avery's shoulder almost as if this wasn't their first date. Beck bit his lip to keep in control, but then found himself trying to reason with the two. They were both teenagers and touching wasn't against the law. It's not like he had pulled down her top or anything extreme. The touches were gentle and sweet. Maybe Beck had nothing to worry about.

He convinced himself that he would leave after they were settled on the beach. So an hour later when the two finished their dinner and dessert, Beck followed them out to the beach. Beck stayed behind a little so they wouldn't think that he was following them. He had observed over the hour and Tanner had seemed like a innocent and nice boy with good intentions. He seemed genuinely interested in Avery and tried to get to know her as much as possible. Beck began to like the teenage boy.

"You know when we first met?" Tanner brought up. Avery bit her lip and blushed. Tanner smiled at her and continued. "I was lost and trying to find Miss. Hullers class and I accidentally walked in on you in the music room." She looked embarrassed and giggled nervously. "You were singing and playing the guitar. When I walked in you just...stopped."

"Yeah, because I'm not good." Avery pointed out.

"No, you are." Tanner countered. "You'd be really good at that high school..." He snapped his fingers as to remember the name. Beck could already tell what school he meant and was smirking. If he couldn't convince Avery to go maybe Tanner could. "Ah! Hollywood Arts. You should audition."

"My mom already made me." Avery explained with an eye roll.

"You didn't want to audition?" Tanner raised an eyebrow.

"I used to, but things change." Avery shrugged. "I got in."

"Yeah, because you're talented." Tanner nudged her arm and smirked at her. Avery was talented. Beck knew that, Jade knew that, Andre knew it, Tanner knew it and so did everyone else. He was sure that everyone knew it except Avery. "I get it if it's personal and don't want to tell me, but why don't you want to go?"

Avery sighed and crossed her arms over her chest in an attempt to keep herself warm. The sun had went down and the heat was replaced with the slight wind chill. Tanner instantly took off his jacket and put it over her. Beck almost rolled his eyes as he walked farther behind them. Romantic, the gesture was, but cheesy. Though Avery smiled at him.

"Thanks," she took a deep breath and looked to the ocean. Then she looked at Tanner. "I didn't want to go to Hollywood Arts, because I don't want to be in the spotlight."

"What do you mean?" Tanner asked curiously.

Beck strained his ear. He didn't know what Avery meant by that either. Did that mean that she didn't want to be popular at a school like that? That she didn't want to be pressured to be the most talented? Beck listened closely.

"You know he was a legend there." Avery sighed referring to her father. "Everyone would want to be my friend, but not like a real friend. Most people go to that school because the famous Beck Oliver went there. If I attend, they'll think of me as Beck Oliver's daughter. I'd have to be the lead in every school play and live under this huge expectation that is Beck Oliver. I may have some talent, but compared to Beck? I'd never hear the end of it there. You know your father did this better or maybe follow more in your father's footsteps."

Beck felt his heart sink. He was the reason that she didn't want to attend Hollywood Arts? He understood why Avery wouldn't want to attend the school now. Even before Avery was born or before he graduated, he was a legend. He got the lead in every school play and was considered the best actor to ever attend the school. Sure, Avery wanted to be a singer, but he knew that she wanted to act, too. In the rare occasion that he sang, people were at his feet and hanging on to every word he sang. He just had that ability to him. Avery would have to live up to that? He didn't want her to. Beck knew deep down, though, that Avery wanted to go to that school because she wanted to grow with her musical abilities. Maybe he could convince her that there were more pros than cons.

"At school it's different." Avery admitted. "No one cares there. Sure, he has his fans that go to our school, but there not so focused on his acting because they don't really care about that. At Hollywood Arts, there dedicated." She looked at Tanner and sighed. "Sorry I dumped that all on you-"

"No, I'm glad you shared that with me." Tanner grinned at her before taking her hand in his. "I understand. I'm kind of lucky in the sense that I'm unknown."

"I wish I was," Avery took a deep breath and smiled at him. Beck wondered what Tanner meant by 'unknown' but didn't think too much of it.

They walked for a couple of minutes more before Beck decided it was time for him to leave. Avery had left seconds before to go to the washroom and Tanner had just been sitting by the beach all by his lonesome waiting for her to return. Beck felt proud that no one had caught him spying as he left. Though as he began to walk towards the exit to leave he noticed Casey walk by him. Lucky for Beck she didn't recognize him because of his disguise otherwise she most likely would have jumped at the chance to talk to him alone. Though as she took a seat beside Tanner, she wasn't sure she would have.

Tanner looked completely shocked that Casey was there. Beck hid behind a tree and peered at them. He knew Casey was nothing but trouble. He also knew that if she was at Avery and Tanner's date that it wasn't to be a wing girl for his daughter. Beck was aware that they were all in the same friend group, but he didn't think that Avery or Tanner knew that this was going to turn into a friendly outing. He squinted as Casey smirked at Tanner who looked confused.

"Uh, hey Case." Tanner raised an eyebrow. "What are you doing here?"

"I was just around." She shrugged. "I didn't know you would be here."

"Didn't I tell you I was going out with Avery?" Tanner remembered.

"Must have slipped your mind." Casey said coyly. Beck scowled. How could some girls act like that? Wasn't Casey supposed to be Avery's best friend? Ruining your best friend's date didn't seem like something a 'bestie' would do. She scooted closer to him. "Mind if I stay until she comes back from the bathroom?"

How did Casey know Avery was in the bathroom? Beck instantly knew that the sneaky teenage girl had planned all of this out.

"I guess so." Tanner shrugged. Casey scooted even closer to him. She began to lower her voice as she talked so Beck could no longer hear their conversation as Tanner had subconsciously matched her tone. Moments later Casey peered over her shoulder and smirked before turning back to Tanner. Within seconds Casey had attacked Tanner's lips with her own.

Beck's eyes widened. Tanner didn't kiss back, but he didn't pull away either. He was about to go in and rip Tanner away from Casey and yell at the both of them. He would demand to them to tell Avery what had happened, apologize to her and forbid either of them to see his daughter ever again. Beck didn't need to though as Avery walked up to them right on cue. He felt his heart ache for his daughter with the pained look on her face.

"Oh...Oh my god!" Avery shrieked.

Instantly Tanner got Casey away from him. He looked bewildered and taken back but got to his feet as fast as he could. Casey tried her best to look innocent, but she wasn't a very good actress as Beck observed. Tanner stuttered, "A-Avery-".

She shook her head cutting him off. Beck noticed the tears threatening to spill out of Avery's eyes. Poor Avery who was so young and broken by her parents divorce already. Although she would never show it, Avery in her own way was fragile. Sometimes she wouldn't care who she showed her vulnerable side to and other times she would. Avery was much like her mother in that way.

"Why would you do this?" Avery looked from Tanner to Casey. The teenage brat simply shrugged her shoulders trying her best to look apologetic. She wasn't doing a very good job. Tanner once again tried to utter something, but Avery didn't give him the opportunity. She turned around and started running away. Beck instantly ran after her.

Avery didn't notice her father following her or him contemplating whether to call out to her. Would she be angry that he was spying on her date? She was already so upset. She had stopped once exiting the beach and leaned against a tree. She wasn't sobbing or crying loud enough to hear, but tears rolled down her cheeks. Her shoulders hunched and her long hair hung over her face in curtains. Beck couldn't stand there for any longer and just watch.

He came out of his hiding place and wrapped his arms around his daughter. She jumped back a little and looked up soon recognizing that it was her father embracing her. "Beck?" Avery sniffled. Suddenly she realized and her eyes narrowed. "Were you spying on me?"

Beck didn't have time to respond as her frustration quickly crumbled into heartache. She let her father embrace her tighter and cried softly into his chest. It wasn't extreme crying like he had witnessed with Jade when something extremely upsetting happened to her. For a minute he just let her cry out. He knew it was what she needed at the moment and didn't mind that she was getting her mascara all over his shirt. When he decided it was best if he took her home he tried his best to calm her down.

The father watched his daughter cry and tried his best to whisper reassurances in her ear. That he wasn't worth it, that Casey wasn't a true friend, that she had better friends and that she would be okay. Beck walked Avery to the car with his arm around her to support her as she walked. He helped her in the car and drove her back home.

Avery's cries were different then what he had heard from her before. They were softer and filled with much more emotion. Halfway through the car ride Avery's cries turned into muffled angry words directed towards Casey and Tanner.

"I bet he changed the time for our date to hang out with Casey." She scowled to herself. "'Eight to eleven will be better because the buffet has better menus'. That was total bullshit." The angry words didn't stop there.

"Casey always wants what she can't have."

"Tanner's just like all the other douches."

"Those two ganks should be happy together!"

Beck let her ramble on to calm herself down. She didn't stop rambling until they pulled into her driveway. He decided he would walk her up to the porch and stay with her until Jade arrived home noting that her car wasn't in the driveway. Avery took a deep and shaky breath before she spoke as she looked towards her father.

"I don't have key." Avery told him timidly. Beck subconsciously patted his pockets as if the key would magically appear in there. He glanced around the porch before remembering the extra key Jade hid a while back. He hoped that she still continued to do that even after he'd left.

Beck walked over to the plant near the door and leaned it over to get the spare key hidden underneath. He smirked to himself and showed his daughter the key. Then he promptly twisted the key into the lock and opened the door. Avery rubbed her eyes that were red from crying and looked confusedly at her father. "How did you remember that the key was there?" Avery asked curiously. The two of them walked inside. "I didn't even remember that it was there."

"I guess I just know this house too well." Beck shrugged as the two took off their shoes. He leaned over outside the door and placed the key back in it's hiding place. Looking back at Avery her shoulders were hunched and she looked miserable. Beck sighed and kissed the top of her head.

"Why don't you change into your pajamas?" Beck suggested. Avery simply nodded before going upstairs without a word. Shutting the door behind him, Beck made his way into the living room and decided to pick out a movie for her.

The movie got Avery's mind off Tanner and Casey when she came down in her pajamas. Beck was on one side of the couch while she was on the other watching the comedy intently. She'd laughed a couple times which Beck hoped got her out of her sour mood. By the time it was ten o'clock Avery was sound asleep and Jade had just arrived home.

She walked into the living room and didn't seem surprised to see Beck and Avery on the couch. She simply slipped off her combat boots and kneeled down beside a sleeping Avery. "I saw your car in the driveway." Jade explained. She glanced at her ex husband expectantly. "What the hell happened?"

"Casey happened." Beck sighed. Jade's fists clenched and Beck frowned at her then looked sympathetically at Avery. "She went up to Tanner while Avery was in the bathroom, talked to him for a while and went in for the kill."

"She's such a bitch for a fourteen year old girl." Jade snarled. Curiosity hit her and she looked at Beck with a raised eyebrow and pursed lips. "How do you know all of this exactly?"

Sighing, Beck already knew he had been caught. He ran his fingers through his thick hair. "I...I just wanted to make sure she was okay." When Jade gave him a doubtful look he gestured to their sleeping daughter. "Good thing, too. Or she would have been crying the parking lot for hours before someone found her."

Jade nodded and took the opportunity to stare at their daughter for a couple seconds (as did Beck). It was so long ago when it felt like she was a little go. All that made her upset was not getting ice cream from the ice cream truck or not getting that new doll from the toy store. Now boys made her upset, along with fake friends, failed friendships and her father not being around. Thinking of that made Beck shudder.

The production for the movie was starting the day after Avery's birthday in Africa. To leave and get there on time he would have to leave the day of her birthday. Avery already thought that he was abandoning her before. He just had to try his hardest to push it back. Though he was the male lead and with Alyssa always around him trying to control his every move, it was hard to do anything. He was thankful she was doing radio interviews that night.

"Beck, don't make me yell."

Snapping out of his thoughts, Beck noticed Jade had stood up, with her arms crossed across her chest. He had totally missed her entire sentence. He tried to read her blank face and looked at Avery for any clues. No luck, with her still fast asleep. "Sorry, what was that?"

"Just carry her to bed, okay?" Jade rubbed her temples. "Then you can leave."

He would have agreed if he hadn't remembered that Jade had just been out with Tristan. Beck looked from Avery back to Jade. "How was your date with Tristan?" Beck asked sinking lower into the couch as to show that he wasn't moving until he got an answer.

"It wasn't a date." Jade narrowed her eyes.

"Then how was your 'hang out' with your ex boyfriend?" Beck prompted. Jade rolled her eyes, the irritation becoming clear on her face. Beck raised both of his eyebrows as to show that he wasn't moving until he got an answer.

"It was fine." Jade replied. "Can you carry our daughter to bed now?"

"One more question." Beck stood up and towered over her. "Actually, it's a statement." Jade tried to look brave, like she was expecting what Beck was going to do when she had no idea.

"You and I," he motioned towards the two of them, "we always end up together in the end."

Beck recalled back to the times they had broken up and gotten back together. He remembered one of the more significant ones. When Jade found out she was pregnant, she didn't tell Beck. Instead she broke up with him which made Beck gravely confused because everything had been going great. One day she'd forgotten her back when she marched out of the classroom and he picked up the bag to give it to her when the pregnancy test fell out. He had confronted Jade and she confirmed the fact that she was pregnant. She was going to put the baby up for adoption and that she didn't want to get back together with him. Of course, within a month they had because Beck had convinced her to keep the baby and that they were going to stay together. He had vowed on that day that he'd always put her and the baby first.

Funny, how things turn out. He still found his way back to her.

With that Beck caught Jade tried to keep her emotionless gaze and turned around to pick Avery up and bring her to her room. He had laid her down in her bed and tucked her in which made Beck smile because it felt like old times when she was younger. When he walked back downstairs he noticed Jade by the door. She didn't say anything, just stood with her arms crossed across her chest.

"Hey Jade," Beck looked over his shoulder for a split second when he had one foot out the door. Jade caught his gaze and he smiled at her. "I love you."

Then, like the sneaky man that Beck Oliver was, he turned around and walked to his car. Maybe this approach would work on the unpredictable Jade West.

Beck was halfway out the door, heading to Dan's when he saw Alyssa's bright yellow Ferrari in his parents driveway. She was leaning against the passenger side of the car, tapping away at her bright pink phone. She was wearing a studded white skirt with a navy blue strapless shirt. Matching her shirt she wore her brand new, expensive gladiator shoes. He leaned against his RV door and squinted his eyes at her.

"Is that what you're wearing to work?" Beck questioned his fake girlfriend. She looked up from her phone for a second before putting it in the black Gucci purse that hung on her left arm. Alyssa offered a smile then twirled in her skirt as if it would interest him. When found he was uninterested she huffed and placed her hands on her hips.

"Yes, I am." Alyssa stated. She gestured toward her convertible as she opened the passenger door for herself. "Now get in. I can't wait for Avery to meet me."

Beck had failed to mention to Avery and Jade that Alyssa would be working at Dan's Breakfast Bundle on Sundays for the rest of the summer. He figured that if he 'surprised' them it would make the blow less hard. Frankly he didn't have a clue as to how the girls were going to take it. He just hoped neither of them would make a scene at Dan's.

Ignoring Alyssa's offer he walked past her to get into his car. Just as quick she shot out of the car and sprinted in her shoes to get to Beck. She forcefully grabbed his arm and jerked him backwards.

"Ouch, Alyssa!" Beck yanked his arm away from the crazed model. "What the hell?"

"We're together still, remember?" Alyssa narrowed her eyes. "Showing up in different cars would raise suspicion."

Beck sighed and glanced at Alyssa's flashy vehicle. With a irritated grumble, he got into the driver's seat of the yellow Ferrari and put the car into drive. Alyssa bounced back to the passenger side of the car and got in. Then Beck drove towards Dan's where he was expecting a very stressful day of work.

Upon arriving all eyes turned to them. Robbie and Cat, who had been giggling in the corner, raised their eyebrows at the sight of the 'Hollywood Power Couple'. Robbie mouthed, 'You okay?' to which Beck merely nodded. Martin was sporting a thumbs up in Beck's direction earning an eye roll from the annoyed movie star. Beck noticed Julia (Martin must have heard Beck out) cleaning up one of the tables near by who waved at him as he waved back. His daughter, looked much better than she did on Friday night when she had been crying, but didn't look over the moon to see Alyssa who she had thought was broken up with her father. Her lips were pressed tightly together before she looked towards her mother, who had a friend with her.

Beck almost showed his scowl. Jade saw Alyssa and instantly sneered at Beck before grabbing onto Tristan's arm and engaging in a conversation with him.. He must have been the third employee that Martin was talking about. Tristan was wearing a smirk on his face before looking back towards Jade. He thought Jade had told him that it wasn't a date she'd been on with Tristan on Friday night. Could they have gotten back together in less than two days since he last saw her?

"Hi everyone!" Alyssa pulled Beck along with her as she walked further inside Dan's. Beck noticed her trying to mask her disgust with the place since she was used to high class restaurants with expensive seating and the smell of delightful food. She approached Julia and instantly brought her in for a big hug. "It's nice to meet you, Avery! Your father has told me so much about you."

Beck's face flushed with embarrassment as he heard a cackle that belonged to Tristan. Julia gently removed Alyssa's arms from her and giggled to cover up the awkwardness in the room. "I'm not Avery." She explained politely. She looked towards Avery who avoided her eye contact. "That's Avery."

Alyssa simply giggled and rushed over to Avery. Just like doing with Julia, Alyssa had attempted to embrace Avery in a tight hug. Avery stepped out of her reach before scrunching up her face. She cleared her throat, "I don't hug."

"Well," Alyssa put on a big fake grin and acted like she wasn't embarrassed. "You look much more like your father than your friend does!" The model's attempt at a joke did not fall through when the feeling in the room stayed the same. Beck knew he should have warned them about Alyssa before she came. She had tried to regain her composure. "I'm excited to get to know you, Avery."

Avery merely smiled at Alyssa before turning around to go to the back room. Beck heard her mutter something sarcastic, "this day just keeps getting better and better."

Beck rubbed his face as his fake girlfriend went around to introducing herself to everyone else. He looked at Jade apologetically who shook her head at him and turned on her heels to follow Avery to the back room. Tristan stepped closer to him, looking smug and confident.

"Nice to see you again, Hollywood." Tristan smirked at the actor before winking and walking away from him.

Beck scowled and clenched his fists. Avery was right. As the week progressed, things just got better and better. Not.
