No POV

Mater had driven to the café after leaving Annabel. The residents were closing up town early that day because they'd been gone, so there were only a few strangling tourists, among them a group of Ferraris Luigi and Guido were keeping late than they wanted to stay.

"Mater!" Sheriff called upon seeing the tow truck.

"Howdy, Sheriff!"

"Mind explaining to wish what in blue blazes is goin' on with...?"

"Annabel?" Mater finished for him.

"Yeah." Sheriff sort of nodded.

Mater explained—the best he could—that Annabel was from another world, that their world was a movie, and that now she was hurt.

"Annie done would've told it better..." Mater admitted.

"So... She likes all of us?" Ramone asked.

"Yeah, a'course!" Mater answered with a grin.

"So, she'd be happy if we went to visit her?" Luigi asked after the slightly irritated Ferraris left.

"Yup!"

"What if I brought her something to eat?" Flo asked.

"Yeah!" the idea excited Mater, but he quickly remembered a technicality. "But she can't drink oil. It's gotta be food." He warned.

...

"Well, that mission went by quickly considering our last one..." Holley commented a few days later. She and Finn were finished with their mission, safely traveling back to Radiator Springs aboard Siddeley.

"Not every mission is the same length or as dangerous as others, Holley." Finn pointed out.

"I suppose." she agreed. She glanced out the window and grinned. "Finn, we're almost there!"

As if on cue, Siddeley's voice came over the loudspeaker. "Finn? We'll be descending momentarily." He announced.

Finn joined Holley near the window. "Thank you, Siddeley." He replied as the plane began to decline.

"You know," Holley began once the spies bid the plane farewell. "I know I still don't know him that well, but everything you've told me about Siddeley doesn't really… Fit."

"How do you mean?" Finn inquired.

"Well, when he speaks during missions, he's usually awfully polite—a lot like you. But you've told me stories about him accidentally blowing up a cart of muffins, or… What was that other story you told?"

Finn smiled. "The one time he dared me to skydive out of him, and when I refused, he attempted a barrel roll and almost crashed."

"See what I mean?" She asked.

"Give it a while. Like you said; you still don't know each other very well. Trust me, you'll see him acting ridiculous soon enough." Finn promised.

"Speaking of acting ridiculous, did Siddeley land this far away for a reason?" Holley asked.

"So he did acting like his usual self sooner rather than later," Finn commented with a chuckle. "I'm sure it was an honest mistake."

"Well, I want to see how Annabel is. I'll fly there to cut down on time." Holley decided.

"Are you sure that's—?" Finn began to ask, but Holley had already begun to hover a few feet off the ground. Finn sped up to keep up with her.

"Finn, are you aware that you're driving on the wrong side of the road?" Holley asked after a minute of quiet.

"Maybe you're just flying on the wrong side of the sky," Finn suggested as he switched lanes. Holley laughed. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

"Would you believe me if I said I didn't notice until now?"

"Very much so. I'd say we both deserve a long rest now that the mission is complete." Finn smiled.

"Not too tired to forget about Annabel, are you?" Holley smirked.

"Never." Finn's smile grew wider as he sped up.

...

As Finn quietly drove into Annabel's cone, his spirits fell when she was just as he left her: unconscious. Mater had said she had been awake quite often recently, which did raise his hopes a bit. Holley protested against it, but Finn decided to wait for her until she awoke.

Meanwhile, Holley went to visit with Mater at the café.

"Holley!" Mater exclaimed upon seeing.

"Hello, Mater." Holley replied with a big grin.

"Aw man, is I glad yur back!" Mater smiled, and Holley giggled.

"So, Finn went to Annie?" he asked after some small talk.

"Yes, the stubborn old bloke wanted to wait for her to wake up before doing anything else."

"He cares about her, that's fer sure. Was real happy to hear she woke up when you was gone."

"Mm, so was I." Holley smiled. "We were awfully worried about her. Especially Finn."

"He was pretty worried when she done fell, too." Mater remembered. "Why is that, anyway?"

"Why is what?" Holley frowned with an inquisitive expression. "That he's more worried than I? Like you said, he cares about her."

"More than you?"

"Well, he was the one who found Annabel in the first place." Holley explained. "It would make sense that he's more attached to her than we are. Of course that doesn't mean we aren't, but he saved her in the first place."

"Saved her from what, again?" Mater asked.

"He said he found her in the middle of the ocean, but… If you ask me, she wasn't very happy in her old world. She hasn't said much about it, only that she somehow ended up here after planning to run away from home. We're not sure, but… Annabel's parents…" Holley paused.

"You don't think her parents done hurt her, do you?" Mater looked worried.

"She hasn't said anything, but… Y-yes, we do think her parents may have been abusive... And as far as I know, Finn's never been married or had any children, and with Annabel telling us that her parents didn't love her, I suppose…" Holley trailed off.

"They're just dad gum perfect for each other." Mater finished.

...

It didn't seem like Annabel was going to wake up, any time soon, and Finn was getting hungry, so he decided to leave and come back in a short while.

He drove over to Flo's café, remembering Holley mentioned she and Mater were going to be there.

"Hey, Finn!" Mater greeted. "How's Annie?"

"Still asleep." Finn replied with a sigh.

"Huh... That's weird." Mater frowned. "Well, 'slong you're here, ya hungry? Flo's done the best cook on Route 66!"

"Mater..." Flo scolded with a smile as she set down some oil in front of him and Holley.

"Well, ya are!" Mater argued.

Flo laughed. "Thanks, honey. So, Finn, right? Can I get you anything?"

Finn glanced over at Holley. "What do you say, do you agree with Mater?" he asked.

Holley took a sip of her oil. "Hm." She smiled. "Most definitely."

...

After Mater and Holley had told Finn about the tractors Mater "accidentally" let loose while he was with Annabel, ("Oh, is that what all that racket outside was?" Finn had asked.) Finn decided to head back to Annabel's cone, and smiled when he heard music playing from inside.

"Life is a highway, I wanna ride it all night long, if you're goin' my way, I wanna drive it all night long..." Finn could hear Annabel singing. It was a bit weak, but it at least that meant she was awake. He smiled again and knocked on the door.

He heard the music shut off and Annabel say somewhat quietly, "It's open!"

Annabel's face it up when she saw who it was. "Finn!"

Finn laughed. "How are you feeling, Annabel?"

"Eh... Not good, but... Better." She replied.

"Well, at least you're awake." he smiled.

"Yeah." Annabel smiled back.

"Any dreams while you were out?" Finn asked in a humorous tone. "You were asleep for quite a while." He added.

Annabel's smile fell. "I mean… I did, but…"

"What's wrong?"

"I… I had a dream that I went back."

"Went back?"

"To my world. It…" Annabel sighed. "It was more of a nightmare…" She admitted.

"Well, it was just a dream." Finn smiled warmly. "I'm sure when we figure out how to send you back, it wi—"

"That's just it, Finn." Annabel interrupted. "I... I don't wanna go back."
