Elliot and Olivia had finally gotten back to his house in Queens. All of this was a surreal experience for Liv, especially since she hadn't stepped foot in Queens since Elliot left all those years ago.
"Do you want something to drink?" El asked gently, it was clear that Liv was feeling overwhelmed. Not only did she look lost but she's quiet, and she's never quiet. He watched as she sat on the couch, looking out the window as people went about their day around them.
"Yeah." She answered. Still looking out the window, at nothing in particular but seeing people go by was somehow comforting. She could hear the kettle in the background bubbling to a boil, and the occasional clink of kitchenware.
Shortly after, Elliot sat on the couch opposite passing her a steaming hot mug. "You made me tea?" She smiled briefly, wrapping her fingers around the cup to hold it tight.
"Yeah" he breathed. "I remembered that's what you like." Olivia looked at him at this point, there was alot going on behind those eyes. He could tell, but she took a sip of her tea and with that small gesture he knew she was thankful.
Olivia sat her cup down on the dark wood coffee table and sighed. "How have I Iet this happen again."
Elliot also placed his cup down, and then moved to the couch Liv was sat on. She turned to him, looking despondent. "You didn't let anything happen. This isn't your fault."
"Really?" She snapped jumping up from her seat, Olivia began to pace around the living room. Circling it, just like her thoughts were doing to her. "First Lewis. Sealview. Now this."
She continued to pace as a silence fell between them. Elliot was struggling with his words, he was so incredibly wracked with guilt. Would they both be standing here having this conversation if he had stayed? He'd never know, but that didn't stop his pain. Olivia broke the quietness not seeming to notice it herself. "I've let this happen for months. I know better than this" she croaked, her voice tinged with anger and despair.
"No no." Elliot interrupted. "This was never your fault. Brian, Lewis or Sealview. None of it was ever your fault. I've said it hundreds of times and I won't stop saying it, you're an incredibly strong woman."
He placed his hand on her shoulder, gently but enough for to her register his presence. "But.." she tried to continue. Watching the man's face in front of her- reassuring her. He had been through his fair share as well and the lines decorating his features reaffirmed that. Olivia like them, the slight weather worn look of Elliot reminded her she wasn't alone.
"I've been talking to Fin y'know." He smiled at her then. "He told me how you were incredible at the Lewis trial. I know that you can do that again."
Liv could feel the tenseness in her body begin to ebb away. There were still so many emotions running through her head, and making her way through them now was just not an option. It often seemed like a tangled web she was constantly flailing against. Hearing Elliot's encouraging words did help and she was more thankful for that, more than he would ever realise.
"I think you're right El" she whispered falling back onto the sofa pushing her shoes off. Elliot mirrored her, exhaling as he relaxed also. "Should we watch some tv Liv?"
"Yeah" Olivia mumbled as she leant against Elliot's chest, her head resting, listening to his heartbeat, and her hand grazing his stomach. Comfort took her and persuaded her to sleep. El flicked the tv on and kissed her forehead letting her rest.
Meanwhile in the precinct.
The whole 1-6 had been working tirelessly to collate the evidence and make sure Brian was sent to prison. Fin had uncovered a witness that saw Brian, drunk, making his way to Olivia's apartment. "Hey Manda." Fin called, handing over his evidence to her. "A witness placing Cassidy at the scene."
"Scene" Amanda responded, it still didn't seem real. Fin noticed the fleeting discomfort she displayed.
"Yeah." he responded. Leading her back to the interrogation room. "Look, I can't go in there. Make him talk."
Amanda pushed the door open revealing Cassidy sat at the metal table, the whole time he was waiting for detectives to enter the room again, he only sat. No pacing around, stretching his legs, he just sat. "So, Cassidy." Amanda sat herself down opposite letting out an audible sigh.
Lifting her head up so she made eye contact with Cassidy. "We can play this game all day Brian. I know what you did." She slammed the crime scene photos infront of him, the apartment covered in blood and furniture broken. He turned away from them staying quiet.
In response she pushed them under his nose so he had no option but to look, she caught him daring to glimpse but no emotion registered on his face. Amanda went through interrogation techniques in her head trying to decide what would work. She then lowered her voice and made the southern twinge to her accent more pronounced. "C'mon Cassidy. I know you wanna get this off your chest. You can tell me."
Cassidy looked up to Amanda putting his hand through his hair. "Okay we had an argument."
"I get that." she mirrored Cassidy, playing with her own hair. "Two people in a relationship. Lotta emotions and things just get out of hand?"
"Yeah it was just couple stuff" Brian began to relax more leaning back into his chair, legs spread under the table, arms uncrossed. Rollins was analysing every movement and knew this was her chance to lean on him some more. She cupped his hand and spoke slower, slathering the charm on as she went. "Just couple stuff" she repeated.
"Don't get me wrong detective. I'm not saying things never got out of hand." Moving his own hand from under Amanda's he started wringing them awkwardly.
"She pushed your buttons?" Amanda added trying to reel him back in.
"Yeah. I lost my shield and all she goes on about is work? This case and that case."
"Bragging. Oh yeah she does like to brag." Sensing that the conversation was turning she aligned herself with the suspect, shared her feelings no matter how ugly or untrue they might be. This part of the interrogation was her least favourite because she always felt dirty afterwards.
"Exactly. You know her." Cassidy stood up and stepped purposefully around the room, perhaps trying to expend some of his nervous or angry energy. Amanda stayed seated. "What did she do detective". Using his number one insecurity against him, getting him closer to confessing. Seeing the corner of Brian's mouth lift slightly confirmed it was working.
"She made me feel small. Then she goes and gets made sergeant." He was still in motion and seemed to be gathering speed. "One day I had a few to drink and she comes home, going on about some case she was working and how she was stressed out." Cassidy stopped then and kicked the chair out of way, resting his fists on the table across from Amanda. "It's like she doesn't even care." she whispered, tipping Cassidy over the edge.
"Cause she doesn't. I was angry, livid even and she doesn't even bat an eyelid. So that night I put an end to it." Leaning in towards Amanda's face attempting to intimidate her like he could do to Olivia. His anger radiating off him. "I fuckin' did it. I kicked her bloody. Just like she deserved."
Immediately she pushed her chair back and stood up. "Gotcha." was the last word she uttered as she left the room to be replaced by Cragen and a smirking Amaro. Nick handed his handcuffs to his captain who promptly clinked them around Cassidy's wrists and led him away with his attorney.
Fin just received the news from Amanda that she had drawn the confession out of Cassidy, and felt an immediate sense of relief. Encouraging Amanda to go home and take the night off. His next action was to open his phone and find Stabler's number.
Amanda got him Elliot. He's done.
