Chapter 14: Results and Regret
Brooke squeezed Peyton's hand tight. As the doctor spoke. The words sank into her heart like a dagger. There was nothing more that Brooke wanted than for the doctor to tell her it was all a mistake. The pregnancy test results, and the possibility of infertility, but instead all she could do was wait for an explanation why.
As Dr. Bailey spoke in medical gibberish for what seemed to be hours, meanwhile the clock had only gone by two minutes since she entered the room. She was ready. She wanted to hear the results. She wanted an answer.
"Dr. Bailey... I. I really appreciate you explaining all of the procedures, terms, and reasoning, but I would really just like to know the results. Can I. Or can't I get pregnant?" Brooke asked with nervousness and insecurity. The women had not felt so vulnerable in her life. All of her emotions pouring into her words.
Peyton rubbed calming circles on her best friends back as the doctor opened her clipboard files and began to read Brooke the possibility of infertility results.
"Brooke. According to your results. You are not able to conceive, according to your results, if by an extremely low chance you are to become pregnant, you would carry a very high at-risk chance of miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, down syndrome, and a number of other intellectual and physical disabilities in the baby. I am so incredibly sorry..."
Brooke felt numb. She couldn't believe the words coming from the doctor's mouth. She couldn't cry. She couldn't move. Her whole world had just come crashing down.
Peyton's eyes filled with tears as she looked to Brooke from her side. Over the years Peyton and Brooke had been through so much together. The deaths of a parent, friends, and family, a school shooting, heartbreaks, being held captive, and an attack, just to name a few. But Peyton had never seen Brooke this devastated. Her face was pale, and her eyes were filled with tears. It broke her best friends heart. All Peyton could do was continue to comfort Brooke, she rubbed circles on her back, and leaned her head on her shoulder, as Brooke began to cry.
"Mrs. Davis... I am so sorry. I know this is difficult news, and I want you to know that we have many resources, and counsellors here at the office for these types of circumstan-" Dr Bailey said as she was stopped by Brooke.
"Can those counsellors give me the ability to get pregnant?" Brooke snapped.
A silence filled the room as Brooke started into Dr. Baileys eyes.
Peyton cringed at Brooke pain she was feeling, as well as her feisty nature coming through. Surly this wasn't going to end well. Peyton cleared her throat and jumped in.
"Doctor. Um. Is there any way of fertility treatments or options she could try? There has to be something you can do." Peyton asked calmly.
"Well. Yes of course. There are options, but of course they are all associated with their own risks. We can discuss this further Brooke, if you are interested, but I think at this time it is important to take the time you need to process this news. I will have you back in for another appointment on the next steps you wish to take. Wether it be fertility treatments, surrogacy, or even adoption..." Dr. Baileys voice trailed off. Brooke's mind was filled with heartbreak and each word tangled into another. She knew these options, and of course she had Sam through adoption. And she was the light of her life. But she wanted to have a child. To experience all that pregnancy, and a baby brings into a family. Now she is being told that this isn't possible. It was devastating.
"I am aware of the other options!" Brooke snapped again. Her emotions were getting the best of her. She realized that herself. She immediately stopped as she apologized. "I. I. I'm so sorry. I just need to. I just need to go." Brooke said scrambled in her thoughts. She quickly gathered her things and ran out of the office into the waiting room and out of the entrance.
Peyton sighed and quickly gathered her things as well and apologized to the doctor.
"I am so sorry. She is just so devastated, she didn't mean any of that..." Peyton reassured Dr. Bailey.
"Please Peyton. I completely understand. This is going to be a very difficult time for Brooke, she is going to need support, here please take my card, and don't hesitate to call me if you need any extra support." Dr. Bailey said handing Peyton the card. She then ran quickly from the office and searched the parking lot for Brooke. She looked towards Brooke's car. And found her in the divers seat sobbing.
She quickly hopped into the passenger side. She reached for Brooke leaning over the console and tightly embracing her, she let Brooke's sobs fall onto her shoulder and began to whisper into her ear.
"Shh. Brooke. Shh. It's okay. Everything is going to be okay. Shh. I know..." She comforted.
"Everything is not going to be okay Peyton. What am I going to tell Julian? He wants kids... And now. Now I can't give that to him..." Brooke cried.
"I know honey.. It's okay..." Peyton said with emotion as she comforted her friend. "But, we are not going to give up. You are going to have ferocity treatments, and you are going to do everything you can with the doctors to have a baby. Miracles happen everyday Brooke. Don't lose hope..." Peyton said.
"I know. It's just. I just wanted this one thing. This one thing to work. To go as planned you know..." Brooke cried.
Peyton tightened her embrace on her best friend and cried with her. After some time. Brooke released from the hug and dried her eyes. Took a deep breath and thanked her best friend.
"Thank you for being here P. Sawyer.." Brooke sighed.
"Brooke. I will always be here. You don't need to thank me. I am here. Forever. Okay?" Peyton reassured.
"I know... I should probably get home before Julian wonders where I am.." Brooke said.
"Okay. Are you sure?" Peyton asked.
"Yeah. I'll be okay. I'll text you when k get home. Thanks again P." Brooke said with emotion.
"Okay. I'll talk to you soon. Please call me if you need anything." Peyton assured her.
"I will. Bye." Brooke said as Peyton walked towards her car and the two went their separate ways.
*****One Tree Hill*****
"Hey Sam? Wait up!" A voice called from the hallway as Sam was walking towards her study hall period.
Sam turned around to see Liam walking towards her.
"Hey. What's up?" Sam asked.
"Hey. Not much. Just study hall... You?" Liam asked well knowing Sam's schedule from Jackson who had asked Taylor. Liam was into Sam. He thought she was cool and he wanted to get to know her, hence 'operation stalker study hall' as Jackson had called it this morning when Liam had asked for Sam's schedule.
"Oh sweet. Me too. Do you mind if we? 'Study' together. He laughed. 'Was that lame? I think it was lame... Oh great. Now she thinks I'm lame. I'll wait for her reaction and play it cool..' He thought to himself quickly.
Sam laughed and rolled her eyes. "Yeah sure sounds good."
'Okay so she thinks I'm funny. This is going well. Okay Liam. Snap out of it. Play it cool.' He thought and responded with a simple but cool "Sweet."
The two walked into the library and sat at an open table.
"I thought you might be with Taylor..." Liam asked attempting to hide that this whole thing had been planned and well knowing this was the only period in the day Sam and Taylor didn't have the same schedule so Sam would be alone.
"Yeah. We don't have study hall together because Taylor chose to take hers in the morning so she could sleep in.." Sam laughed.
"Smart plan. I wish I would have thought of that." Liam laughed.
"Yeah except for the fact that she didn't coordinate this plan with me before our time sheets were due last year, so now she's stuck in AP Math and I have a free period." Sam laughed
"Yeah. I guess that kinda sucks." Liam agreed.
"Yeah.." Sam responded. "So. How are you liking it here.." Sam asked.
"It's cool. I mean leaving Columbus sucked, leaving friends and that, but my family moved across town so it made more sense to go here. It's a lot cliquey'r here though I have to say..." Liam said looking around the library and clearly seeing the cliques formed at the tables. Cheerleaders, Jocks, Band Geeks, Drama Kids, and well the regular people. Like them.
"HA! You have no idea... I've never really been a part of a clique. I'm not really into that." Sam said frankly.
"Yeah me either. I'm not into fitting in anywhere. I'm cool just hanging." He admitted. "I mean. I do play basketball, but only because Jackson and I have played since we were like 10... We grew up together. I didn't want to leave him hanging so I stayed. But trust me. I'm not some stupid jock. I hate those guys. I prefer to laugh at the 'pretty' people and do my own thing if you know what I mean?" Liam asked.
"Oh yeah. You are defiantly speaking my language.." Sam said surprised by Liam's like-minded views as Sam when it came to the classic 'high school' crowds.
"I only came to Tree Hill half way through last year so I know how it feels to be the new kid here. Kinda sucks at first but after a while you get used to it. It's actually the best school I've gone to.." Sam admitted.
"Oh really? Did you move to?" He asked.
Sam slightly gulped. She normally had no problems with disclosing her past, but this time it felt different. Could it be possible that Sam had some feelings towards Liam? Impossible Sam thought. She had Jack. Jack was all Sam needed and she couldn't possibly be feeling something else for someone... Or could she... She thought to herself.
"Yeah something like that.." Sam answered and then changed the topic. "So you're on the basketball team. Do you do anything else?" She asked.
"Yeah I'm actually in a band. With a few of my friends. You should check us out some time. We usually play at TRIC on Thursday nights." He said hoping that wasn't too forward.
"Yeah sounds cool." Sam responded seeming interested.
"Sweet." Liam added.
The two continued to chat during their study hall period. Liam felt a connection with Sam. She wasn't like all of the other girls he was used to date. She was smart, and real, not some cheerleader who was boy crazed.
Sam was feeling conflicted and confused. She couldn't be feeling this way about someone else? Not with Jack. Maybe Taylor was right. This whole long distance thing is hard. She thought to herself while trying to focus on the small talk the two were making, but we're clearly in their own worlds.
The bell rang and Taylor came running into the library to meet Sam for lunch, to find them sitting together at a table. She slowed her pace, then sent a flash of her eyebrows and a small 'I told you so' smile, of course a non-verbal language that only best friends could understand. She came and sat down at the table.
"How was class?" Sam asked
"Um. It was class... Clearly boring." She laughed.
"Hey, so I should go catch up with Kyle." Liam said gathering his papers and putting them in his bag.
"Alright. See you around." Sam said.
"Yeah it was good talking to you Sam. Bye Taylor!" He said turning around to walk away from the table.
"Oh my God. You are so into him." Taylor squealed.
"Uhm. No. I'm not." Sam said straight forwardly.
"Oh whatever Sam. You so are. Just admit it. He's perfect for you." Taylor argued.
"Taylor. I have Jack!" Sam said in annoyance.
"Oh Sam. How long is this going to last..." Taylor sighed.
"What do you mean..." Sam defended.
"You and Jack. He's in Charlotte Sam." Taylor said.
"Taylor. Seriously?" Sam asked getting defensive.
Secretly Sam had been having 'doubts' all morning but hearing, Taylor say it made it real. Plus she needed her support right now, not her honesty.
"What Sam. I'm just saying. I want you to be happy." She said.
"I am happy?" Sam defended.
"Yeah it looks like it..." Taylor said sarcastically. Realizing she had pushed Sam too close to the edge as she collected her things and began to walk away.
"Wait Sam! I didn't mean that. You. You know what I mean..." Taylor quickly pleaded. But Sam just continued walking. Taylor tried to catch up.
"Where are you going?" Taylor called.
"Somewhere where I can be away from you and everyone else who doubts Jack and I. I'm going home." She said as she got into her locker grabbing her bag.
"You can't just leave. We have a test in 6th period.." Taylor pleaded.
"Whatever." Sam said slamming her locker shut and walking out of the school doors.
Taylor shook her head and lets out a sigh. She had discovered many things about Sam over the last two years, but most of all she knew that the moment that she felt cornered, or heard something she didn't want to hear, she would run. It was her weakness, her insecurity. Taylor felt terrible about the things she had said but she shook it off and thought she would go and check on Sam later. She walked to her locker, then to her next class.
*****One Tree Hill*****
Sam walked through the streets of Tree Hill with anger, and confusion. She felt her tears prick her eyes and quickly wiped them away. She had never felt so confused about relationships. Jack was so simple. Why was this happening. She continued to walk at a fast pace and took out her iPod and plugged her earphones in to zone everything out.
After a short time Sam has arrived home, she saw that both Brooke and Julian weren't home due to the lack of cars in the driveway.
She unlocked the door and walked into her bedroom closing her and flopping onto her bed. She stared at her ceiling for a short time and thought about her current situation, she also thought of the History test she was currently missing. Brooke and Julian probably weren't going to be happy about that, but she didn't care at this point. She just felt angry, alone and confused. Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard Brooke and Julian enter the home.
SLAM
"Brooke. Wait. We need to talk about this..." Julian pleaded to Brooke's bedroom door.
Sam's eyes widened as she crept closer to her door to hear the fighting on the other side. Both Brooke and Julian had no idea Sam was home, let alone listening from the other side of her bedroom door.
"Julian. I can't. I can't do this right now." Brooke cried.
"Brooke. Please. You need to tell me what's going on..." Julian said.
"Julian. I'm fine! I just had a. I had a bad meeting with Clothes over Bro's this morning okay. Just. Just drop it!" Brooke yelled.
"Brooke. Is this? Is this about the pregnancy test?" Julian asked with hesitation.
Brooke's eyes widened. Pregnancy test? How did Julian know about this? She thought to herself.
Silence filled the hallway.
Sam was still listening from the room and felt her hand cover her mouth. Pregnancy test? They were trying to get pregnant?
"Brooke. I. I found the test in the trash can, I knocked it over last night and I saw it. I saw that it was negative. It's okay. We can. We can try again." Julian pleaded completely confused by the current mood of his wife.
Brooke opened her bedroom door slowly.
"You. You saw the test." Brooke said softly.
"Yes. And it's okay. We will get there. Sometimes these things take time." Julian said leaning in to hug Brooke but she pushed him away slightly.
"Okay Brooke. I am so confused. Did I do something?" Julian asked.
"No. No. It's not. It's not you. It's me.." Brooke cried.
"Brooke. Is this about the test?" He asked.
"Not about that test..." Brooke mumbled.
Julian looked at Brooke with a perplexed face.
"Julian. I. I. I can't get pregnant. We. We can't.." Brooke cried.
"What? When? How? Brooke..." Julian said in a comforting tone and pulled his wife into his embrace.
"I thought I was pregnant. I was late. And I took the test, then I went to the doctor to verify. And. And. I can't. I can't get pregnant. Julian I can't have kids." Brooke cried.
"Shh. Brooke. It's okay." Julian whispered as he rubbed Brooke's back.
"It's not okay Julian! I can't give you a family..." Brooke cried.
"Brooke! You already have..." Julian questioned. "You and Sam are all I could ever ask for..." Julian said emotionally.
"Julian. It's not the same. You want kids. And I. I can't. I just. Can't." Brooke cried.
"Brooke. We will figure this out. We will go to all of the doctors, and get treatments, and if all else fails we will adopt!" Julian defended.
"Julian! It's not the same!" Brooke squeaked.
"Brooke. I know you don't mean that. What about Sam..." Julian said.
"I know but I wanted a baby of my own as well, you know. I wanted to give you children, and now. Now I can't. Do that." Brooke cried and ran into her room closing the door behind her.
Julian took a deep breath.
Sam was resting on her wall next to her door. Her tears were freely flowing. She couldn't believe what she had just heard. Brooke couldn't get pregnant. It was heartbreaking. But it was equally painful to hear Brooke's words on wanting 'real kids' what was Sam? Her anger began to come over her.
She stood up and continued to cry she was so angry, confused, and most of all hurt, she opened her window and jumping out running away from the house in hopes not to be seen from the windows. She continued to run until she made it to the park and sat down on a park bench and continued to cry, she felt her phone vibrate. She pulled it from her pocket.
Text: Hey Sam. Just thinking about you. How are you today?- Jack
Sam's eyes filled with more tears as she threw her phone onto the grass in anger and confusion.
*****One Tree Hill*****
A few hours had passed since the fight. Brooke had opened the door and joined Julian on the couch. The two talked it out some more, in a calmer manner and decided, they would move forward with the fertility treatment.
"Julian. I'm sorry. I didn't mean any of that. I was just so angry and upset-" Brooke began but Julian stopped her.
"Brooke. It's okay. I understand." He said rubbing her back.
"I didn't mean that about Sam ether. I feel terrible. I didn't mean it that way. She is our daughter. I was just so worked up, you know." Brooke sighed.
"I know babe. It's okay" Julian continued to comfort.
They were interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Come in!" Brooke called assuming it was Sam getting home from school, but confused as for the knocking.
To their surprise Taylor entered the home.
"Hey Taylor!" Brooke called, and looked behind her not to find Sam.
"Hey. Uhm. I'm sorry I just wanted to come by and check on Sam... I've texted her like a hundred times, but she's not answering me, I figured you took her phone, when you found out she skipped today.." Taylor said but judging by the looks on both Brooke and Julian's faces they both clearly had no idea what she was talking about. Whoops. There goes that word vomit again.. I'm on a roll she thought to herself.
"Skipping?" Brooke asked confused. "Sam skipped today?" She questioned.
"Well she left after lunch... We sort of. Got in a fight, and she stormed off, and said she was coming home." Taylor said also now equally confused as a look of horror came across Brooke's face, followed by Julian.
Brooke jumped off the couch and ran to Sam's bedroom door. Then knocked slightly. "Sam?" Brooke called, opening the door to find an open window and her curtains blowing in the wind. Her eyes filled with tears as she realized that Sam must have been home the whole time, and heard the whole fight. She gulped and announced to Julian that Sam was gone as she ran back into the living room.
"Oh no..." Julian said.
"This is all my fault. I'm so sorry." Taylor apologized.
Brooke's mind wandered back to all of the things that had been said when Sam was clearly listening from the other room. She began to cry.
"No Taylor. This isn't your fault. It's mine..." She sighed and pulled out her phone.
*****One Tree Hill*****
There you have it, another chapter! I hope everyone enjoyed it. Will they find Sam? Will things be the same? Or will this cause Sam to run. I figured I should add a 'big' twist in the story to make it a little more exciting, don't worry too much about the pregnancy I have ideas, also about the relationship between Brooke/Sam. They can make it through anything
I know some of you were on the fence about Brooke having a baby, but I saw an opportunity to go deeper into Sam's character, I have some ideas for some flashbacks in the next chapter.
Until next time! Thank you for reading. All of your reviews inspire me to continue to write, and come up with new story lines. Please feel free to leave any ideas or feedback!
