Starling City
February 14, 01:34 EDT
"So any plans for today?" Tigress asked Death as they jumped from one building to another.
Death had gotten the task of helping Tigress patrol Starling City now that Batman had returned to take care of the Red Hood situation. Actually that had become most of the League's priority. However, they had both had a short shift today. Surprisingly, Aqualad had given the day off to anyone who wanted the day off. Death just thought he was doing this because he had recently started dating someone again and she knew this was causing the leniency. She didn't blame him but at the moment, Death wasn't in the mood for earth and their customary Valentine's Day. A day spent doing nice things with a significant other sounded just like something she really wanted to do with Jason but would never get to.
"Nothing. Just going to wallow," she answered Tigress, "You?"
"Same," she said with no emotion in her voice, "I would usually spend Valentines preparing a bunch of food for Wally but not anymore. Just me and my mom."
"Hey, you need some company today?" Death offered.
"I appreciate it but I think I really just need this time to be alone with her. Thanks though."
Death nodded her head, understanding the girl beside her. The night was still but she was sure that both girls' insides were nothing but. They both walked in silence towards the Zeta tube that would take them back to Mount Justice when they both heard a noise. Tigress pulled out her weapon and Death took a power stance, ready to strike.
"Sorry ladies, I didn't mean to alert you guys," Nightwing said, as he stepped out of the shadows with his palms raised in defense.
"What are you doing here?" Artemis asked curiously as she placed one hand on her hips while she waved her weapon around.
"Easy there tiger! I'm just here to talk to Death," Nightwing explained to Tigress.
"And that's my cue to leave," Tigress muttered. She passed both Death and Nightwing towards the Zeta.
"'Night Arty," Nightwing called out.
"Yeah, yeah! Night you two! Have a good Valentine's Day!" She called back right before she Zeta'd out of Starling City. The air between them got really quiet after Tigress left and Death now wished the girl had stuck around.
"So what is it you want to talk about again," Death asked.
"Alright just promise to hear me out before you answer Death," Nightwing explained to her. Death nodded her head in agreement.
"I now that we haven't been friends for that long and even that's been kind of rocky but I want to know if you'll just take Aqualads offer for tomorrow and come out with me for Valentine's Day?" he asked a little breathless.
Death didn't know what to say. She didn't expect Nightwing to ask her this. Her heart seemed to pick up speed and she couldn't think straight. The bigger question was why she was responding this way to his proposal.
"It doesn't have to be date if you don't want it to be…it can just be two friends hanging out…," Nightwing added.
"Yes," Death finally blurted out. She didn't want to overthink the situation so she went with it. Maybe this would be something good for her. Death had been moping about Jason for a couple days now and she needed a distraction. At least for one day. Death just didn't know if Nightwing was the best idea for that.
The Endless
February 14, 25:00
Death wandered in what she knew to be the Endless, or at least that was what her brother, Dream, had called it. She walked and walked until finally she woke up.
Mount Justice
February 14, 10:00 EDT
Death didn't know how to feel about the rest of the day. She didn't know what people would say, she didn't know what Nightwing would say, and most importantly she didn't know what she would say. She knew that Nightwing had told her it wasn't going to be a date but it still didn't feel like it wasn't and Death had never been on a date before. She raided her closet and found her favorite black tight dress with her favorite combat boots along with her ankh and her parasol. At least she knew that she felt good about the way she looked. Death walked out of her room and hoped that no one would question where she was off to. Death was known for not having a life.
"Woah Grim Reaper! Where are you going dressed like that?" Bart asked suddenly appearing next to her.
"Nowhere guys," she said as she knew Jaime would be around soon enough. Where there was Bart, there was Jaime or vice versa.
"Hermana, you can only be going on a hot date looking like that," Jaime pointed out.
"Don't you guys have somewhere to be," Death asked them both.
"Nope," they both answered quickly.
"Well, it's none of your business," Death said, "roolfehtotteefeulg." She added the last part to keep them put as she made her way out of Mt. Justice. It was a good simple trick that Zatanna had taught her.
Dick had told her to meet him at the exact spot they had talked the night before so when she got out of the Zeta tube, he was right there waiting for her leaning against the building of the wall in civilian clothes holding a dozen white roses. Death had to admit that Nightwing looked good outside of his uniform. He, of course kept glasses on but she didn't expect him to give up his identity that easily.
"I know this isn't a date but the lady at the flower shop said these meant friendship," he said as he handed her a bouquet of white roses.
"She actually misinformed you. They stand for purity but that's ok," she told him, "I love them." She kissed his cheek as a thank you and enchanted the roses back into her room and into a vase.
"So what do you have in store for us?" Death asked curiously.
Downtown Gotham
February 14, 10:17 EDT
Death and Nightwing had spent the whole day together and she could honestly say that she had had a great time hanging out just the two of them. Nightwing had told her that he had one more place to take at the end of the night. They both propped up on his motorcycle and he rode a little towards the outskirts of the city. Death only realized where they were when they pulled up to giant gates. It was a cemetery. Nightwing drove up a trail until the reached the tallest hill of the cemetery. When Death got off the motorcycle and took off her helmet, she could finally appreciate their view. She could see outlines of headstones and behind them, the twinkling lights of the city that illuminated the cemetery. She felt both at peace and happy to be here.
"Why did you bring me here?" Death asked Nightwing curiously.
"I brought you here because there's no better view that overlooks my home better than this place," he said truthfully, "plus, I also hoped this place would mean something to you."
"It does. Something about all these people being at peace brings me too a sense of peace, so thank you," Death said, "I haven't felt that in a while."
They stood there a couple seconds in silence. Finally Nightwing spoke again,"So do you want to tell me why you've been moping around lately?"
"It's actually been about a guy but I don't think I should be talking about this with you. Besides, I've already talked about it enough with some of the girls. I'm okay," Death added.
"Well, can I just add one thing," Nightwing asked.
Death nodded her head.
"I'm sorry. I may have made the same mistake he did but I'm actually glad he messed up because unlike him I'll still be around," Nightwing told her. He put his hands in his leather jacket and walked towards his bike. Death didn't know what he had meant but she didn't want to decipher it either; at least not now. She took one last look at the beautiful view, took in the cemetery air, and walked to Nightwing's motorcycle. They both got on without saying anything and were about to ride off when Batman's voice sounded:
"Nightwing, what is your location?" Batman asked urgently.
"Gotham cemetery," he replied.
"Head towards the bridge. Its Red Hood and Joker." Batman spoke again.
"On our way," Death responded this time.
