CHAPTER 14: Our Moment
Isaac was gripping his sand colored hair, trying to keep himself sane and human. He did everything that he could to stay human, breathing exercises, emptying his mind, anything that Derek told him to keep calm. But none of it was working; he couldn't keep his wolf at bay. It wanted release, to go find Stiles, and show him that no one would take Brooke from him, and if they tried they would have to go through him.
He regretted that he showed up to school, he should have stayed home because if he did he wouldn't be going through this. He would be human, as human as he could be, and not be harm's way and on the verge of hurting others.
Isaac could hear the hearts of those walking in the halls, but one heart beat stood out to him. For this heartbeat, was racing, it was almost scared. It stood out from the rest because of how different it was, he needed to concentrate on something else other than himself, and this was something that at least distracted him.
That was until he smelled jasmine and vanilla. Brooke. It was her heart that was beating like that, she was worried and he knew that it was because of him. He knew that he should go and comfort her, but right now he didn't want her anywhere near him. Not like this. But the strange feeling was back; there was a pull to her, and only to her. He felt his wolf claw out at him, not to mangle or maim her, but to be with her. It wanted to her affection and attention solely for him, but Isaac couldn't let his instincts take over, for it only took something so small to upset him and it could end up hurting Brooke.
He felt his wolf wanting to escape, but he wouldn't allow it. He felt his body fight against him. His mind wanted one thing, and his body wanted another, he was fighting the instincts. He felt that his body wasn't his. Then he heard the door click open.
The scent of jasmine and vanilla filled his nostrils, making him lose more control over his body.
"Isaac?" Brooke whispered the moment she walked into the room, she was worried for he looked like he was in great pain.
"Get out Brooke", he said gripping his head turning away, from her so she wouldn't see how his claws were out and his eyes were the color of liquid gold.
"Isaac what's wrong, you're worrying me", she said nearing him, there was something wrong with her best friend, and he was keeping it from her.
Isaac scooted away, he would never put himself in the position to hurt her, not if he had a choice to do so.
"I'm fine, just leave me alone", he said as controlled as he could, "please Brooke", he finished hoping that would make her leave.
"No, Isaac what happened this weekend, please tell me this isn't because of that thing that you were going to do, which you still haven't told me what exactly was", she said slowly approaching her best friend, who still wouldn't look at her.
"Brooke, please just leave", he begged her, "if you care about me, just leave" he said knowing that that might actually do the trick in making her leave.
Brooke looked straight at Isaac, finally standing behind Isaac, and hugged him from behind. She pressed her face against his back, marveling in his scent, the scent of the fresh rain and his choice of musky cologne, but to her it was the smell of comfort.
"It's because I care that I'm not going to leave", she whispered into his back.
Isaac's heart skipped a beat, as his face reddened. He should have guessed that Brooke wouldn't have left; she was too nice of a person to leave someone who needs help. He looked down and saw Brooke's smaller hands on his chest, he saw that her hands gripped his shirt, as if to never let go. He smiled loving how much Brooke care about him. He brought his hands down on hers and saw how his claws disappeared as soon as his hands made contact with hers. Even like this, Brooke helped him through so much.
"I'm sorry, it's just I have a lot on my mind" he said as he rubbed circles on the back of her hand.
"You're worrying me", she said not pushing him to look at her, because at least now he seemed calmer.
"I'm sorry, it's just…" he said wanting to tell her everything, he wanted to things be normal between them, because this is what kept him sane, what kept him human.
"It's ok you don't have to tell me", she said as she gripped his shirt tighter, "just don't push me away, because I don't know what I would do without you", she said trying to hide the hurt in her voice, but failed horribly.
Isaac's body stiffened at hearing her words. Brooke kept him in a tight embrace, not wanting to let him go. Isaac felt his heart swell at her warm actions, she really was something else. She was his light at the end of the tunnel, the reason he felt that he was worth something and not useless like the way others and his father made him feel.
"Isaac, I know that you don't want to tell me what's wrong, just let me try to help you", she said nuzzling her face into her back.
Isaac wanted to tell her everything that was going on. He wanted to tell her that he was a werewolf, that from here on out, there would always be different about him, but he knew that if he told her, she would be in danger since she would know too much. She was too good of a person to be introduced into a dark world. But at least he could tell her the reason on why he was acting so strangely moments ago, well part of the reason.
Isaac took her hands and removed them from his shirt. Brooke felt her heart ache; he was pushing her away, making her remember when Stiles and Scott did the same thing to her. She instantly tightened her hold on his sweater, not wanting to let go, because if she did she could be losing her best friend. But the moment he locked his fingers between hers, he was able to remove her grasp on his sweater. He instantly turned around to face Brooke, and saw hurt written all over her face. Brooke looked up at Isaac, and instantly saw how blue his eyes were, reminding her of the vast ocean, and no hint of gold anywhere.
"I'm sorry Brooke, I was just a bit jealous", he admitted the partial truth to her before she could say anything.
"Jealous? Why would you be jealous?" she asked not knowing what was wrong with Isaac.
"Stiles", he simply answered.
"You're jealous of Stiles, like Stiles, sarcastic, twitchy, and about this high, that Stiles?" she asked trying to lighten the mood but she was failing.
"I'm serious Brooke, I am", he said letting go of her hands and walked over to the window.
"Why?" she asked looking at the clock knowing that they were going to be late to their first class, but this was so much more important.
"Because, he gets along great with you, and he's not shy and useless. He makes you laugh and a great guy, he's just everything that I think every girl would look for in a guy", he said not looking over at her.
"Isaac", she said placing her hand on his shoulder, "I'm not like every girl, sure Stiles is funny and a great guy, but I don't like him, and don't say you're useless, because you aren't", she told him as she stood in front of him.
"You're just saying so I won't feel bad", he said not believing her words, and looked away from her.
Brooke reached up and put a hand on his cheek and turned his face to her direction, "Isaac listen to me", she said getting his attention, "I would never lie to you. And you aren't useless; you were there for me when no one else was. You would never leave me like Stiles and Scott did. You are kind and a great friend, you aren't useless ok", she said never taking her eyes off of Isaac's, "besides, I'm not interesting in Stiles, because I like you", she whispered to him with a shy smile on her face.
Isaac could see the color of her face turning a beautiful shade of pink, he could clearly see the pigments changing color, but he could also hear how her heart beat as fast as the wings of hummingbird, she wasn't lying and was as nervous as he was. He slowly was winning her heart, and that was something that he felt proud of. He could feel his wolf howl in content, he made him and his wolf happy, and he wasn't going to lose her once he had her.
"I like you too, a lot, but like I said I'm not going to rush you in being in a relationship with you", he whispered shyly.
"Isaac, I… I don't think that you have to wait", she said shyly too.
"Huh, are you sure?" he asked inching his face down so he could whisper to her.
She nodded, "yea, I think I realized that I do like you more than a friend and noticed that this is normal, our normal, just don't leave, say you'll stay please?" she said looking up at him.
"I promise", he said as leaned down to her lips.
Isaac pressed his lips against hers, and there was a new spark there. His wolf was almost purring at this contact. There was something different about this, a good different, one that he would love to get used to. He figured it was his new heightened senses that made this kiss feel different, but there was so much more behind this kiss. He felt his very being and hers intertwine, this kiss was more emotional than physical. The adoration and love in this kiss could tear down walls and mountains, but was so gentle that the slightest interruption would easily break this kiss.
Brooke was taken aback by this kiss too. Before their kisses made her body feel warm, but this kiss made her body burn. Ever since today, she noticed that there was something about the way he kissed her, it just felt different but she couldn't care to know what it was. This was the boy that she was slowly falling for; she knew that after today it would only be a matter of days before she would completely fall in love with Isaac. And she could hardly wait, because if each kiss would feel like this, if she felt this safe and secure with him, than there shouldn't be anything that she should be afraid of because Isaac would never hurt her.
Brooke needed to breathe, and separated her lips from his, but Isaac leaned in not wanting to let her lips go, "Isaac, we should stop", she said between breathes.
"I don't want to", he said as he tried to recapture her lips, but she wouldn't let him.
"Were late for class and I don't want to get in trouble for being caught with making out with my boyfriend", she said emphasizing the last word, and couldn't help but smile at calling Isaac hers.
Isaac loved the way that sounds, my boyfriend, he was hers, and she was his. Something that he would imagine when he was alone, but now it was a reality, "Boyfriend?"
Brooke's eyes widened, maybe she shouldn't have addressed Isaac like that, "yea if that's ok?"
"It's perfect", he said leaning down and capturing her lips in a sweet kiss.
"We still have to get to class", she said before Isaac kissed her and made them even more lately then they already were.
She took his hand, and locked their hands together and took him out the room to get to their first class. Isaac felt so much calmer than he was before any of this started, he looked at his free hand and noticed that they were normal; he controlled his wolf, for now at least. And he had Brooke to thank for that, because even if he would have to get used to his new life as a werewolf, he knew that having Brooke would make things easier for him.
As they exited the hallway, there was a scent that he caught. It smelled like Derek, but different. It smelled like him and Derek, there was another person like him, a werewolf, in this school. He knew that that was the only way to explain the smell that invaded his senses, but who was it? He knew that this wolf wasn't part of Derek's pack, because it didn't have any scent that tied him to the pack, so who was this other werewolf? He needed to know, because if this person was lethal, he would make sure to keep Brooke as safe as possible. And he hoped that Derek knew of this other werewolf.
It was finally dinner in the Lahey household; he wished that he could be with Brooke right now, because he knew that being around his father would make him lose whatever control he would have over his wolf. He knew that if he quickly ate his food, he could get out of here and lock himself in his room.
They were both nearly finished their dinner, not exchanging much words, especially since Isaac didn't want to upset his father. He had to remain as normal as possible, and he wasn't sure that he would be able to do that if he lost his temper.
"So Isaac", his father started, immediately grabbing the teen's attention, "how's school?"
"Good", he as soon as he asked.
"I heard that you all get your progress reports today, so what are your grades?" he asked not bothering to look at his son, so he didn't see the way that his face paled and his jaw clenched at the mention of grades.
"Um, so far it's an A in French and English, and a B in Econ", he said hoping his father wouldn't ask about the grade that he failed to mention. But he knew that his father would ask, and he could feel himself worry. His wolf was starting to stir, he felt threatened, and he knew that he would have to remain as calm as possible before he would something that he could end up regretting.
"What about chemistry?" he asked as he took another bite.
He couldn't tell him, because he knew that his father would punish him, like every time he does when he did something wrong. But his father would get more upset if he didn't answer him back. But maybe he might not ask if he didn't answer.
"Isaac?" his father asked again, making Isaac's plan backfire.
"Um, I'm not sure. Midterms are in a few days, so it could go up and Brooke has been helping me", he said wanting to get an answer out to make his father not ask again. It was only after he answered, did he realize that he said something that he shouldn't have.
"Well, what is at now?" his father said calmly. Isaac wished that his voice matched his personality, his voice made it seem like his father cared about him, like he was worried about his grades and how they could affect his future. But as he stared into his eyes, he saw that he was just waiting for him to slip, in order to hurt him.
He knew that to remain safe, he would have to lie, "the grade?"
"Well, yeah?"
"I'm not sure", he lied, shifting his eyes so he wouldn't see that he was lying.
"You just said it could go up. You wouldn't be lying to me, would you Isaac?" he said with a smile that made his blood freeze over.
"No", he whispered, as he could already feel the walls of the ice box closing in on him.
"Then tell me the grade", his father said taking a bit.
Isaac started muttering excuses that would make him tell his father to not punish him, telling him that he would try harder, study more, anything that would make him go unpunished, but was interrupted, "you wanna take this little conversation downstairs?" his father said. Isaac immediately stopped saying anything, as he took a second to convince himself that he wasn't locked up in the ice box, that he was imagining the walls of the kitchen closing with each passing moment, and nodded no. "No? Then tell me the grade son".
"Listen, ad, the semester's only half over", he said frantically.
"Isaac…"
"There's plenty of time to turn it around…"
"ISAAC!" His father shouted not wanting to hear any more excuses from his son, and wanted an answer.
Isaac finally knew that there was no avoiding it, he had to come clean "it… it's a D", he finally admitted. He waited, waited for his father to lash out at him, to call him a failure and useless, waiting for pain to take over his body as his father dragged him to the basement. But nothing came.
"Oh, it's a D. I'm not angry", he said calmly, making Isaac stare at him skeptically, "but you know that I'm going to have to find some way to punish you… responsibility as a parent, so we'll start with something simple. Like… uh… tell you what, you do the dishes and clean the kitchen okay?" he said calmly.
Isaac felt himself relax, this was something different. His father was actually punishing him like a normal child, no locking him up in an ice box, or beating him, nothing like that, just doing extra chores around the house. He nodded with a small smile accepting this as his punishment for failing chemistry.
His father finished the contents of his glass before speaking, "good, because I'd really like to see this place spotless", he said as he threw his cup to the floor, shattering it to pieces. Isaac cringed, he should have known that this household would never be normal, it was anything but normal, "know what I'm saying", he father said with an almost crazed laugh, "I'd love to see this kitchen…" he said as he slammed his fist on the table, making Isaac shoot back from the table and press his back against the wall, "absolutely spotless!"
His father finished his sentence, as he threw the glass centerpiece at Isaac, and thankfully Isaac was able to react before it hit him. The centerpiece shattered to pieces at the impact, none hitting him, except for one piece that go caught under his right eye. He quickly looked at his father, feeling his wolf growl within, wanting to be unleashed to hurt their attacker. He felt the glass sting his cheek, and brought a hand up to remove the shard. He pulled it out, letting out a hiss as it tugged his skin as it came out.
"Well that's your fault, but you could always go and cry to little whore to fix it up", he said not caring that he hit his son.
Isaac stood up his chest heaving with anger directed his father, "Don't you dare talk about Brooke like that", he said feeling his chest vibrate like a growl, "and you could have blinded me", he growled.
"Shut up!" his father let out "it's just a scratch! It not even bleed…" he stopped as he watched the blood that was leaving his wound, travel back up his son's cheek before it completely healed.
Isaac saw his father's eyes widened, and felt something warm travel up his cheek. He brought his hand up to where his scratch should have been, but didn't feel his scratch, nothing just the smoothness of his cheek. His cover has been blown, his father saw him heal, something that normal humans couldn't do.
He needed to run. And he did. He ran outside, not caring that he would surely get in more trouble should his father catch him. He needed to escape. He grabbed his bike as his father called out behind him; he pedaled away letting his senses take him far from here, anywhere but here.
He pedaled to an alleyway, feeling a pull direct him to his destination, he didn't know what it was he was being led to, but he had to follow it. He left his bike knowing that he would be just as fast on foot, than his bike, and at least this way it would throw his father off his trail.
He ran letting his instincts take over. His wolf felt free, it guided him down the streets of his town, not stopping until he got to his destination. It wasn't until he slowed that he knew where he was.
He was in front of Brooke's house. He looked up, and saw her reading a book by her window sill; she glowed in the light of the moon. To Isaac, she almost looked like an angel, his angel. He wanted to climb up to her room, and spend the night there, because he was safer with her than anywhere else. But he couldn't because he knew that eventually his father would find him here, and he wouldn't let her family get involved in his family problems. He wondered why of all the places he ended up here, but he didn't have time to question it. He stole one last glance and decided to head back to his house, or with Derek to explain that had happened in these last 24 hours, but he needed to retrieve his bike that he left in the alleyway.
Isaac was running straight to Derek in the abandoned railroad depot, he needed to know. He remembered as he went to go pick up his bike the first thing that he smelled was blood, he didn't know where it was coming from. But he recognized the car that was parked on the street, it was his father. He walked over to it and there was the cold body of his father, claw marks all over his body.
His father was dead.
He made it and there Derek was looking at a strange chest with a spiral marking on the top.
"Derek, my dad's dead", he said catching his breath.
"What did you do?" he asked jumping to conclusions.
"I didn't do anything, but something else did, something not normal", he said feeling the loss of his father finally hit him.
He knew that he should feel relieved that the person who has hurt him so much was finally gone; he would never be plagued by his beatings or punishments. But that wasn't the case, instead he thought that he was finally alone, he was an orphan, the last Lahey in Beacon Hills.
"What do you mean not normal", he asked trying to understand what could have attacked Isaac's father.
"It's paranormal too, what exactly is out there Derek? You said there are hunters here, are there more of us here? And there's something that I need to tell you, it's about Brooke", he said wanting to get answers to the questions he's been thinking about all day.
"Isaac, I think its best you take a seat while I fill you in on everything, and we'll start with Scott McCall", he said sitting on the chest that he pulled out moments ago.
"What does this have to do with Scott?" he said not knowing what their lacrosse co-captain, had to do with anything.
"Because he's a werewolf too", he said flatly, "And just listen before you ask anything, and then we'll talk about Brooke, understood?"
He nodded because he needed answers.
