One by one, his fingers pressed themselves onto the keys. They moved as though they were dancers. The piano, was the floor. Swiftly they moved. Gracefully they went.
Austria's expression was soft as he let the music enter his ears.
The next meeting wouldn't start until an hour, Germany made him come early despite not many others being here. Oh well. There was a piano in the hall, of course, that meant there was something for him to pass the time.
Time passed on, along with the other nations who walked by. Chatting among themselves. Ignoring the music Austria was making. But, that didn't matter to him. They all probably couldn't tell great music if it punched them in the face. He should let it go for now. Thinking about all this nonsense will ruin the music.
He didn't talk. All he did was play the piano and it brought a smile upon his lips.
There was a presence near him, he could feel it.
Was it a nation walking by, chattering with their friend?
No?
This one was closer, near next to him in fact.
When the keys stopped, Austria slowly opened his eyes and turned to the nation before him. The smile gone. His expression was annoyed.
"That was a lovely piece you were playing."
Oh? Did someone finally have a taste in music? Rare to see amount his fellow nations. Most would only care for metal, rock, techno or even dubstep. Well, whatever they called music. Austria couldn't even think to listen to any of those for more than ten seconds.
"Shame you stopped."
This nation, who was it again? He was quite tall. Same as Austria, he wore glasses. And might he add what lovely blonde hair he had. The name escapes him. How could he not know someone with amazing tastes?
"I know we don't talk very much, Russia makes sure we don't, but I would love to hear you play some more."
Oh, Russia. Now that he thought about it, names did come up. Latvia? No, that was the small one. Lithuania? No, he had brown hair. Who was it again? Uh? Estonia?
Yes... That's right.
"It is a dear shame we don't speak," Austria's hand were placed above the keys, ready to continue their performance. "I feel as though we may have some things in common."
"A shame it is."
Austria began to play once more, having an audience this time was somewhat relaxing to him. He felt more peaceful. Having someone who enjoyed his music.
Once the music finished, Estonia applauded as Austria took a bow.
Austria felt at peace.
"What lovely music you play." Just hearing those words from Estonia brought a smile on his face. "Russia never let us hear music, so it was nice to hear it for a change."
"Really?" Austria thought it should be crime not to have music. This poor soul must have gone so long without. How could he live? Music was everything! "How horrible."
"It truly is."
"To live without music..." Austria wouldn't even know how to describe that hell. Just what kind of monster would do such a thing!? Oh, right. Russia of course. Seeing how he was he couldn't be surprised.
"It might be a long time for me to hear music once more, may I hear some more?"
His heart warmed at the request, how could he turn him done? "Of course."
The halls were filled with nothing but music for the past hour. If Hungary didn't come out and tell him that the meeting was about to begin he knew he could sit there for hours, days even. And for some reason, he knew Estonia would continue to stay and hear him play.
Why even bother to show up to these meetings? They never talk about anything of importance. All they do is fight and fight.
If he wanted to, Austria could just leave without anyone knowing.
In fact, why didn't he?
Wait for the perfect moment and he could be gone without anyone knowing.
He waited, waited for that best chance. Once everyone was focused on France and England trying to choke each other, he took that time and left without making a single sound.
That was a lot easier then expected.
Finally, peace and quiet.
Walking down the halls he realized something.
Peace and quiet.
Looking back he could see he was not that far away from the door, yet he couldn't hear a single word come from there. So it was soundproof? Not surprising. To be honest, it was quite common for them to get noise complaints. The staff must have changed the room to please these complaints.
Smart on them.
And since he's here, why not play the piano some more. It did calm him.
He took his seat, hands above the keys, eyes close and expression soft. For a few seconds, silence. Then the next, he began to play.
It wasn't long before he had that smile as he played. It felt relaxing. Comforting even. The way he played the piano made it feels as though he could be in heaven. But for some strange reason, something felt amiss.
He tried to ignore that dumb feeling, but the longer he played the more he felt that missing feeling. His fingers began to trip up and press wrong keys.
Slowly, he stopped.
What was missing? What was this feeling?
"Why did you stop?"
Austria almost jumped out the chair from the sudden noise. He quickly turn and saw the one standing there. Estonia. He must have sneaked off as well. Which Austria wouldn't blame him for doing.
"You were messing up a bit, is there something wrong?"
There was, but what was it? Austria couldn't really say.
"You know..." His voice soften, walking closer. One hand was one the piano. No eye contact was made, but... There was a connection. "I can play the piano..." His hand slid off. Now approaching Austria. "Mind if I play with you?"
His heart warm and he smiled. "Of course."
Together, both their hands were above the piano. Eyes closed and expression calm. Silence. And then, they played.
Neither of them talked. Neither of them said a single thing. Yet, there was a connection.
And Austria smiled.
He felt at peace.
He knew what was missing.
And now he found it.
