Dreams Come True, Part Two
(Disclaimer: I don't own anything characters or words by Glee.)
Living life in New York was always so fast paced. The time passed by within the blink of an eye, literally. Kurt was soon graduating from NYADA, and he could hardly believe that he had been through not only high school, but also college now. Twenty-two-years-old was not what he had been expecting, but very welcoming. He remembered the morning of his graduation. He had walked into their living room, and Blaine was crying.
Kurt immediately thought something was wrong. He rushed over, taking his husband's hands in his own and asked. All Blaine did was just do his normal cry-laugh thing and tell Kurt how proud he was. That made it all real for Kurt. He was really done. There were no more excuses as to why he wanted on Broadway. School was done and he had a degree in performing, Broadway was calling him.
Unfortunately after he graduated, Broadway wasn't exactly calling him like he expected. He had his mind set on performing and making it big just as Rachel had done for Funny Girl, but every audition ended in disappointment. He was hopeless and exhausted from picking up more hours at the diner until he found something, anything to help out with the bills. He tried to be positive, and with Blaine his constant prep squad, he was able to not get too down on himself.
One day after around thirty or forty auditions, Kurt got a call. Blaine was in his last year at NYU, and things were just not looking good for Kurt's acting career. The call had been a callback for a small off Broadway show, and as desperate as Kurt was, he jumped at it. Going into the callback with more confidence than he had had in a while, Kurt liked to say that he nailed it. He had never sounded better. It may have been because he was so determined to get this part or the fact that he knew Blaine was waiting right outside the theater with a bouquet of roses if he got it or not. After his last note, Kurt was offered the spot right then and there. He was elated.
Everything about performing on stage, even if it was off-Broadway, was everything Kurt imagined it would be. The show was one that he had never heard of before, written a few years prior. It had a following, so on opening night, and Kurt was surprised to see that the small theater was full. All his friends and family came out to support him, and Kurt was really living the dream he had had since he was ten. He was performing for a living with the man of his dreams supporting him every night, front row.
Once Blaine graduated from NYU, he was out auditioning. Kurt knew that it was only a matter of time until Blaine got noticed. He was so talented and devastatingly handsome, it'd be a shame to pass up the opportunity to cast him. The thing was, Kurt wasn't jealous anymore. He knew that they both had different traits, but they were both talented. Blaine would get some roles and he'd get some. He never dreamed of what really did come for both of them.
It was a couple months after Blaine graduated, and the younger boy was in the middle of an intense callback session for a semi-lead role in a brand new Broadway show. Blaine was actually spending the day at the theater with Kurt as Kurt went over the new choreography they had thrown at him the day before for his show that night. Blaine was helping him learn it when Blaine started singing opposite. Blaine had learned the shows lines after seeing it so much, so Kurt went with it.
After they were finished with the number, laughing and out of breath, they were surprised to be greeted with clapping. It turned out that the director had been watching, and he actually was interested in how great Kurt and Blaine acted together. He told the two of them that he had heard there was a company going around trying to make LGBT versions of many different Broadway shows. They were just getting started, and they would be moving around to different venues to perform. He thought Kurt and Blaine would be absolutely perfect. The first show would be the Phantom of the Opera. Of course, Kurt's interest was peaked.
They looked into it for a few days, and after much deliberation, they called the director and scheduled an audition. This was something that they could do with their separate roles, performing whenever they had time off. And to be able to do it together, Kurt jumped at the chance. At the audition, they performed together, moving around like they had been for the years and years they'd been together. It was so easy. The director was so impressed, right after they both left, they got the call saying they were it.
Everything happened too fast after that. Kurt continued his show and Blaine got the role on Broadway that he so rightly deserved. The performance of the LGBT show was scheduled for in a year, just so they could get everything around. They had time before devoting time to that. Kurt went to see Blaine on opening night, getting butterflies from the first number to the last. He could see that his husband was meant to be on stage. He loved every single minute.
Two months after, Kurt's show closed. He wasn't upset or sad. He figured it would close sooner or later. With that under his belt, he was able to snag another role, this time actually on Broadway. He wasn't the lead, but it was on Broadway, and he did have a number. He took it eagerly; ready to officially be on Broadway, and it was everything that he could have ever dreamed of. Not being the lead didn't even matter. People still wanted his signature at the stage door, and he still got a lot of support.
Finally after a year and a half of waiting for the kinks to be worked out, Kurt and Blaine finally performed their first version of the Phantom of the Opera. To say it was a success was an understatement. If the Broadway world didn't know who Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson were, they knew then. It soared, and Kurt was hardly able to keep up with all the performances on top of his show on Broadway. They had a following, and Kurt could hardly contain his excitement that he got to do it with his husband.
It got to the point where the shows were so popular, that they were going to start rehearsing for another one, and Kurt was excited. The producers settled on 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf', and that was that. Once Blaine's contract with his show was done, he hesitated to sign another one. He had been so success as the lead, but the LGBT shows were just such a hit that him and Kurt really wanted to focus on that for right now. So that lead to Blaine not signing again, and Kurt did the same.
Instead, to keep them busy while they waited for the show to be finished writing and producing so they could start rehearsals, Kurt actually started designing again. Instead of clothes, he started drawing sketches for jewelry. It was mostly just for him to wear whenever he and Blaine went out to a show. Blaine was so impressed; he pressed Kurt to look into selling some of the pieces. One thing led to another, and then Kurt was selling his line of men's jewelry on QVC. He was surprised to see how well people took to it, and before long everything was sold out. He was elated, as was Blaine. It was a nice side job to keep money flowing in as they waited for their shows.
Blaine on the other hand took the time to do what he did best. Kurt was surprised to come home to sheets and sheets of music all over the living area. Ever since they had moved back to New York after getting married, Blaine had started writing, especially after being on Broadway himself. After tiptoeing through them, he learned that Blaine had been hit with a strike of genus. His husband wrote all the music, and soon after they were all finished, dozens of songs, Blaine met with a producer and Blaine's songs were turned into Broadway productions. Kurt had never heard of someone writing a musical around someone else's songs, but they did it for Blaine.
Soon after the first show started, "Elmo's Fire: The Musical", Blaine got a call that led them both to tears. It was like an out of body experience. Blaine had been nominated for a Grammy for his composed works on the musical. That was one of the greatest days in both the boys' lives. Kurt couldn't be happier for his husband nor prouder. They were so strong and powerful; Kurt couldn't believe the life they were living.
Blaine didn't get the Grammy, but he was still just so happy that he got nominated. It set a fire underneath him, and within a few months, Blaine had another set of songs to show to another producer. This time, he also had a story all planned out for it and everything. The second Kurt heard the title he couldn't believe his ears. He didn't think it would get picked up, but Blaine just kept surprising him. The producer loved it, and soon enough they were setting it forward to be on Broadway. After another year, "Trapped in an Elevator: A Love Story" debuted, and was an instant success. The songs were captivating as well as the actors that were casted. Kurt was so proud he could hardly handle it. Again, Blaine was nominated for a Grammy, and it was just incredible.
After the two successes, Blaine took some time to himself, writing a song here and there for the directors and producers that reached out to him. It was fun to sit and watch Blaine work, and Kurt even helped whenever he could. They were to a point in their careers where they could really do anything, and it was outstanding. After a couple more months of tuning touches, they finally started their new show on and off Broadway, depending on the venue, together.
The day after the first Virginia Woolf show, Kurt was shocked to see that they were on the front page of the paper. It was shocking, and it really made him realize how big their names were in the city. They were known throughout the LGBT community, but not only that, they were known by many people. It was crazy and yet, very humbling. Kurt always dreamed about being famous, and this was probably as close as he was going to get to it, and it wasn't very different than his normal life.
That was until he found out that he had won an Obie Award for his role as Martha. He couldn't handle how excited he was. It helped boost his self-esteem, and know that he is in the right business. People, not just his husband, respect his work and enjoy it enough to give him an award. It was for off Broadway, but that didn't matter because it was still a well-known award. It was everything that he had been working for. The best thing about it all was that he got to help others that were in need or scared of their sexuality through both the award and shows. He and Blaine made sure they did everything they could to help.
Soon enough, five years have passed since they had started their married life in New York. It was pure bliss. Kurt would admit that he had been nervous since when they lived together before, they were at each other's throats, but it wasn't like that this time. It may be because they are married now, or it may be because they both work this time to make sure they are making each other happy as well as themselves. They give space when needed, they go out on dates with both of them on time, and they work together. They are older and wiser.
Kurt would admit that his old self liked the drama, but not anymore. They lived together perfectly, and Kurt wouldn't change anything. Well he may just want to change one tiny little thing.
A year prior, the two of them got a bigger apartment. It wasn't too big, but it was a lot bigger than the shoebox they had got when they were newlyweds. It had three bedrooms and two baths. It was perfect, and Kurt knew that they would be staying there for quite some time. The only thing was, it was empty. It felt too big for the two of them, and that made him think more and more about the opportunities to expand. The conversation happened before their first show of Virginia Woolf.
"It's too quiet," Kurt observed as they lounged on the couch. They had managed to get out of rehearsal early that night.
"I can sing if you want me to," Blaine piped in. He didn't even look away from the television screen. They hadn't had much time to watch TV as of late, and Blaine jumped at the chance to catch up on his shows.
"I mean that the apartment is just too quiet all the time." He looked around before reaching out and kicking Blaine in the side softly.
"Hey!"
"I'm talking to you," Kurt shot back, sticking his tongue of at him. "Now will you pay attention?"
Blaine nodded, reaching forward and muting the TV. "There. I'm all yours."
"It's just-I don't know. It's stupid I guess."
"Nothing is stupid," Blaine told him. He reached out and took Kurt's hand in his own. "You know that after four years of being married, I know you and when you want to talk about something. Let's talk. Nothing is ever stupid or off limits."
Kurt knew that. It was just that this was such an iffy topic. Whenever it was brought up in the past, they would just shrug it off and just say that later is a better time to discuss.
"Okay," he began after a deep breath. "It's just that this place is just so quiet all the time. I don't know. I just feel like it's too big sometimes."
"Do you think we should look at other places?" Blaine asked sounding concerned. "I want you to be happy in our home."
"No. I love it here. I love this place. It is absolutely perfect. It's just too quiet sometimes."
"Well what do you suppose we do about that? We could play some music or we could open the windows more."
"No." Kurt rubbed him forehead. Of course Blaine would pick right now to be just as oblivious as he was in high school.
"What is it?" he asked with a squeeze to Kurt's hand. "Talk to me."
"I want to add to our family." He looked over and locked eyes with Blaine. "I just-that's what I want. I've been thinking about it for a long time now, and I really think that now is a great time to do it."
"Are we talking about getting like a cat or dog?"
Kurt let out a long groan, letting his head fall back. He closed his eyes, trying to count silently in his head. Sometimes he just wanted to hit Blaine. This was one of those times. "Forget it."
"No," Blaine said quickly. Kurt heard him scoot over until he could feel the heat of his husband's body solid against his side. "Talk to me."
"It's hard when you are being so oblivious, Blaine." Kurt opened his eyes as he turned to look at his husband.
"I'm sorry, I really am." He gave Kurt his signature smile accompanied by puppy dog eyes, and it made Kurt less annoyed. "Talk to me."
"I want to have a baby, Blaine."
There was a long pause as Blaine looked at him, taking in what was just said. His eyes were as wide as can be and his mouth dropped open adorably. Kurt smiled softly, leaned over to kiss his cheek.
"A baby?" Blaine asked finally.
Kurt nodded, eyes falling down to his lap. "I just want to have a family with you so bad. We are finally settled down. We are financially stable. We have all this room. I want a baby with you, and I want it soon. I'm twenty-five, almost twenty-six. I think it's time."
"I want that too." Kurt was surprised by the words, looking up to see the smile on Blaine's lips. "I've wanted that for a while now. I love you and I love my life with you, but having a baby could be…"
"It could be the start of a whole new chapter of our lives." Blaine grinned as he nodded. "I'm so happy that you agree. I've been worrying for the past couple days."
"Why didn't you talk to me about this sooner?" Blaine took his hand again. "This is huge."
"I know." Kurt shrugged his shoulders. "I just-I was scared with all the success that our shows have had, you'd want to focus on doing those. We are at such a great time in our careers; do we really want to chance having a baby? We may just get too overwhelmed."
"We might, but I think that with the shows right now, we are going to be able to be parents and be dads. I'm done with my show on Broadway and so are you. All we have to focus on are those three to four nights a week. I think this is probably the best opportunity for us to do this."
It was like music to Kurt's ears. He couldn't kept he smile from taking over his face. They were really thinking about doing this. "I mean-this is great that we both agree, but how would we even go about it?"
"I've looked into it," Blaine said, a small blush forming on his cheeks. "A while ago when I was bored. If we are going to have a baby, we need to figure out what kind of baby. Do we want to adopt or are we going to get a surrogate?"
"I personally want a little Blaine running around here." Kurt smiled over to him. "I want to have a surrogate."
"Me too." Blaine leaned in, kissing Kurt's lips softly. It took Kurt by surprise, but he accepted it with open arms. "I personally want a little Kurt."
"What should we do?" Kurt asked him then. "Should we go to an surrogacy agency? Those are an option to figure out what we need to do."
"We can do that on our next day off. How does that sound?"
"It sounds pretty amazing," Kurt agreed with a smile. "Blaine, I'm just so happy that you want this too. I've been so worried, but now we can do this together."
"This is going to happen." Blaine grinned, kissing him again. "We are going to be daddies."
Kurt could hardly contain his excitement. There was a lot more to plan out and to figure out, but they had time for that. All Kurt cared about was that they both were on the same page. They both wanted this more than anything, and Kurt couldn't wait to start planning the whole thing. He had always wanted kids, and to know that the time that he'd be a dad was getting close, it was a sensational feeling. This was the best night of his life.
-1-
Blaine's life was going absolutely perfect. The last four years couldn't have been better even if he wrote it. Not only had he made his name known as a lead on Broadway, he was living the life with his husband by his side. After the talk with Kurt about expanding their family, the two of them really started doing research on what they needed to do and what needed to be filled out. It was a long process that was pretty expensive, but they both agreed it was worth it.
On one of their afternoons off, Rachel asked Blaine and Kurt out for lunch to catch up. Rachel Berry graduated from NYADA a year after Kurt at the top of her class, and right out of school landed her second leading role on Broadway. Blaine couldn't have been happier for her. She was the lead in 'Jane Austin Sings'. A year into the show, Rachel had thrown Kurt and Blaine a curve ball. She had decided to give Jesse St. James a second chance. Kurt was against it at first, but Blaine helped him see how happy Rachel had been whenever they were together. The two got married two years later with Kurt the maid of honor and Blaine a bridesmaid.
After taking a year off from her show, Rachel returned to her lead in 'Jane Austin Sings' married and better than ever. Blaine couldn't help but agree that she was so much better than before. After a year back, Rachel got nominated for a Tony award. It was the best thing that could have happened to her, and she had the loving support of Kurt and Blaine. After all, they put up with all her crap for years, doing anything and everything she asked. It was about time that she got rewarded for it.
"How are my two best guys?" she asked brightly, wrapping each of them in a hug once they arrived to the restaurant. "Looking as dapper as every."
Blaine smiled and hugged her tightly. "You look beautiful as always."
She smiled and squatted his chest as they were seated. After ordering, they had to hear all about her. That was one thing that would never change about Rachel. She always liked to talk about herself.
"So I don't think I'm going to sign another contract," she finished.
"Wait, why?" Kurt asked as they looked at her life she was crazy. Her Broadway show had been such a hit; she'd be crazy to leave.
"I just need a break, you know? I've been doing ten shows a week for a year, and I just need some time for myself. Jesse's show that he produced is about to open in a few months. I want to be there to support him like he's been for me. Plus the directors there at Jane say they will always have me back whenever I want to. I just need a change of pace."
"We understand that fully," Kurt told her as he looked over to Blaine with a knowing smile.
"Okay," she drew out, looking at the two of them. "You two are keeping something from me. What is it?"
Blaine grinned down at the table. They hadn't told anyone about what they were looking into. They wanted to be one hundred percent sure it was actually going to happen before letting anyone know, but this was Rachel.
"Kurt and I are looking to change up our own paces," Blaine said finally, taking Kurt's hand underneath the table.
"What does that mean?" she asked.
"Blaine and I are looking into finding a surrogate," Kurt announced with a bright smile.
"Oh my god!" she squealed, standing up immediately and moving around the table to hug them both again. Blaine laughed as she squeezed him tightly, bouncing them up and down. "You guys! This is so amazing!"
"We know. We know." Kurt laughed when she shook him. "We haven't settled on anything yet, but we are just focusing on figuring out what we want to do. We have to find a surrogate first and then get her tested before anything can officially start."
She had sat back down, beaming from ear to ear. Blaine spoke, "It's probably going to take a year or so to fully complete, but we couldn't be happier."
"What brought this on?" she asked, looking at both of them.
"Well we are now just doing a couple shows a week, so we figured that now would be the best time to try for a baby. I've always wanted one with Kurt, and he with me, so we don't want to wait another minute to do it."
Tears started to form in her eyes, and both Blaine and Kurt reached over to take her hand. What came out next, was not what either of them expected, "You should let me be your surrogate."
The table was silent as the three of them looked at each other. At first Blaine thought that she was joking because this was so unlike Rachel, but her face was absolutely serious.
"Rachel," Kurt breathed, head starting to shake. "We couldn't let you do that."
"Yeah, Rach," Blaine agreed. "This is a huge job, and we wouldn't want you to be burdened with it."
"No, no, NO!" she said quickly. "I'm serious about this. You guys are my two best friends, and you have done so much for me in these past five years. From the Funny Girl debacle, to the failed television show, and now to my Tony nomination. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you two. You were always there, both of you. You've supported me, put up with me, and put me in my place for years. I know how much you guys love me, so this is the least I could do. I know how long it could be to find a good surrogate and then how expensive it could be. Let me do this for you guys for no charge at all. At least you'll know that I'm healthy and I won't decide I want the baby when I have it. I really want to do this."
Kurt looked over to Blaine as they both tried to read each other's mind. Blaine couldn't deny how amazing it would be to know their surrogate let alone have it be Rachel. He wanted it, he wanted it bad, but this was just too much to ask of her.
"Rachel," Kurt spoke, his voice unsteady. "I know that you mean every word you just said, but this is a big deal. I don't think you realy understand what it entails and-"
"I want to be your guys' surrogate, Kurt Anderson-Hummel. For crying out loud, just accept my offer!" She grabbed his hand. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get to carry the two men that have been the biggest influence in my life's baby. Let me do it for you. I'm practically begging here. And I just got tested a month ago when that sickness went around the theater. I'm free of everything, a complete clean bill of health. The only thing I would ask is that I have a little help from the two of you when I get further along because Jesse will be so busy with his show."
"Wait about Jesse?" Blaine asked then, getting her attention. "Shouldn't you ask him on his opinion?"
"It's my body, and I know he'd tell me that this would be a perfect publicity after the nomination." She rolled her eyes with a teasing smile. "You guys, let me do this. Say the word, and I'll let you knock me up!"
"First of all, we would not be doing anything of that sort," Kurt told her, nose crinkled. "It would be done via a doctor, and second of all are you sure?"
"Kurt, I've never been more sure. If you would have asked me a few years ago, I would have said no way in hell are you messing with my body, but now. I know how much you guys mean to me, and what kind of friend would I be if I made you search and wait for a suitable surrogate when I have a perfectly healthy body to have a baby. My doctor even said so. Kurt and Blaine Anderson-Hummel, I love you two to death. I want to be your surrogate. Will you please just accept my offer already?"
Blaine looked to Kurt, suddenly speechless. He didn't know what to say. This was the most selfless he had ever seen Rachel be, and it was so heartwarming that they had a friend that would offer to do something like this. Kurt's eyes were watery when they locked with Blaine's, and it was obvious to both of them that they really wanted this. They wanted Rachel to be their surrogate.
"Okay," Blaine spoke for both of them. "If you are sure, Rach, then yes. We'd love for you to be our surrogate."
She clapped her hands together excitedly, bouncing in her seat. "Oh, this is going to be so much fun you guys!"
They all spent the rest of their lunch talking about where they were going to go next with this. Once they were finished, Rachel hugged both of them before disappearing into her car with promises of calling later to set up an appointment at the doctor's office to go over everything.
"I can't believe this is happening," Kurt said, turning to Blaine. "Is this really happening?"
Blaine nodded his head, taking a step forward. He reached out and grabbed both of Kurt's hands. "We have the world's greatest best friend."
"You can say that again," Kurt murmured, hands squeezing Blaine's. "We are really doing this."
Instead of answering, Blaine moved forward and kissed Kurt deeply. It was all he could do. He couldn't form any words or sentences for that matter. This was the best that he could do. He couldn't wait to see where the next couple months led them.
-2-
Kurt paced back and forth, hands wringing the end of his shirt over and over again. This was nerve wracking, and he didn't know how longer he was going to be able to handle this wait. This was it. Rachel had gone in the bathroom five minutes ago to take a pregnancy test, and she still hadn't come out yet. He really needed to know if they were going to have a baby or if they were going to have to try more sperm. The doctor said that the success rate for getting pregnant the first time was low, but Kurt was holding out hope. It had been a month and a half since the girl had offered to be their surrogate, and Kurt really didn't want to wait another minute.
"Sweetheart," Blaine spoke from their bed where he sat. "Come sit down. You are going to get no where pacing like that."
Kurt let out a sigh, lightly aggravated with his best friend. Why was it taking so long in there? Instead of listening to his husband, Kurt moved over to the door, knocking softly.
"Rach?" he called out. "Is everything all right?"
"Yeah, I shouldn't have peed before I got here," she called through the door. "I haven't been able to get anything out for a whole three minutes. I drank some water, and I'll be done in a minute."
Kurt nodded. Okay. One more minute, he could do this. He turned and caught Blaine's eye. His husband looked just as nervous as he did, his hair falling down onto his forehead instead of styled up like he had been doing it since his first Broadway show. They hadn't had to deal with gel anymore, and Kurt was grateful for that.
He moved closer, sitting on his knee next to Blaine. They didn't speak, but Kurt knew that Blaine was just as a mess inside. They wanted this so bad that they'd do anything to make this test say yes. After a minute, the door opened and both boys shot up.
"Now we wait," she said holding out the stick.
Kurt took it careful to avoid the pee end. They all sat in silence, staring at the clock hanging on the wall. It was agony. Kurt leaned into Blaine, holding onto his hand with the one that didn't have the stick.
"Okay, just look at it already!" Rachel proclaimed once the second had touched the twelve two minutes later. "Tell me if I'm pregnant or not. I got the one that either says yes or no."
Kurt turned to look at Blaine before raising the stick. This was it. He was about to see if their lives were going to be changed for the better or if it was just going to stay the same. Blaine nudged him on, so Kurt looked down, eyes focusing on the screen of the pregnancy stick.
YES
Once his eyes laid on that simple word, Kurt felt like he was about to explode. He dropped the stick before throwing himself at his husband, tackling him back against the bed and claiming Blaine's lips with his own. The whole world disappeared as they kissed. He didn't notice Rachel picking up the stick and reading it herself. He didn't hear her scream with excitement. He didn't care that she pulled out her phone to call Jesse. All he cared about was that he and the man below him were going to have a baby.
He pulled away slightly, and that's when he noticed the tears running down his cheeks. Blaine looked up to him then, hands coming up to cup Kurt's cheeks.
"Does this mean-"
"Yes," Kurt answered quickly, nodding his head up and down as fast as he could. "She's pregnant! We're going to have a baby, Blaine!"
Blaine let out a choke sound before pulling Kurt back down against him in the world's tightest hug. They held on to each other for what felt like forever. Finally, Kurt sat up and pulled Blaine with him.
"We are going to be daddies," Blaine murmured, almost jumping up and down.
"Do I get in on this celebration now?" Rachel asked from the door. She put her phone down on the dresser before rushing over to the two of them. They shared a group hug, and Kurt knew right then and there, this was the best day of his life. As the days went on, he knew that he'd probably say that again and again, but as of right now, this day was the best. He couldn't wait.
-3-
Blaine had never been more nervous than he was right now, hands shaking and foot taping as he and Kurt waited outside of the airport. They were surprising Blaine's father-in-law and mother-in-law with taking him to Rachel's fifteen week ultrasound. The thing was, they hadn't told anyone about the pregnancy. There was so much that could have gone wrong. The doctor told them that first time successes were slim, so they didn't want to get everyone's hopes up until they were past the first trimester. Now they were here, and Kurt and Blaine couldn't wait to tell his family about the little baby they were going to have in six months.
Of course, things had started out stressful. Kurt instantly freaked out with making sure they both knew what they were getting themselves into. A hundred parenting books later, Blaine was pretty sure he could deliver a baby himself. Kurt, however, was still stressing. He was on edge about everything; going over how they wanted the nursery to be and what the names they wanted for different sexes. Blaine eventually had to settle him down. After a long talk about how everything was going to be all right, and they were going to learn as they go, Kurt finally took a breath or two.
This didn't mean that Kurt wasn't stressing still. Hell, Blaine stressed as well. Reading those books helped both of them learn about how to have a healthy pregnancy, so that lead to the two of them spending as much of their free time with Rachel. One of them was almost always with her, and that was something they just settled into. Rachel appreciated it, but she didn't appreciate the instructions they threw at her every so often. Whenever she decided to eat something that wasn't considered healthy for the baby, they would take it away. Blaine also made sure to get her herbal teas and shakes to help the pregnancy move along. There was no stopping it from happening, so Rachel just accepted the help and direction.
"Hey," Kurt said suddenly, reaching out to stop Blaine from his pacing. "Will you stop worrying? My dad and Carole are going to be so excited."
" I know, I know." He ran his hand through his hand. "I just-this is so huge."
"My dad is going to be so excited, he's going to squeeze us both to death. You don't need to worry. Now I think I see them. Don't you dare give anything away, mister. We have a plan."
Blaine nodded his head, and soon enough Burt and Carole came through the doors. Kurt hurried over to them, Blaine following. After hello hugs, they were settling into the SUV Kurt got for them that day. He refused to drive in the city, but would not take a taxi to the doctor's office. Instead, he hired a driver.
"This is fancy," Carole said with a smile, hand rubbing the seat.
Blaine smiled at her as they settled back. "We are so happy you guys could make it up here for our performance tomorrow."
"We wouldn't miss it for the world," Burt told them from his seat in front of Blaine and Carole. He slapped Kurt's knee playfully. "Our boys are getting bigger and bigger, and I'll be damned if I let you guys slip through our fingers when you are too big for us old folk."
"Trust me, Dad," Kurt told him. "I could never forget you or Carole."
"Never," Blaine agreed as he reached over and took Carole's hand in his own.
"So where are we heading?" she asked, looking out the window. "I know you guys said something about a surprise before dinner."
Blaine didn't know what to say, so he let Kurt take this one. "We will be there in just about half an hour. It's just something that Blaine and I really wanted to share with the both of you."
No one said anything else as they continued on through New York. Blaine was excited about the ultrasound because they may be able to tell what the gender was, and he and Kurt were waiting to continue with the planning until they had been able to know for sure what they were having. To top it all off, Carole and Burt were going to be there.
After a minute, Burt asked them about how the show was, and they led them into a discussion about what was next after the string of shows. They tried to beat around the bush, keeping them focused on the conversation instead of where they were going. That was until they pulled up to their destination. After that, there was nowhere to hide.
"Kurt, Blaine, why are we at the doctor's office?" Carole asked as they climbed out of the SUV.
"Is everything all right?" Burt asked, worry lacing through his voice.
"We are both in perfect health," Kurt assured him quickly as he moved over to stand next to Blaine. He reached out blindly for Blaine, and Blaine immediately took his hand and squeezed.
"We actually brought you here to tell you guys something really exciting," Blaine told them. They looked around before back to the boys.
"All right, boys," Burt spoke. "I'm just thinking the worst, so you mind's well just tell us what the hell is going on."
"Blaine and I were discussing our lives a while ago, and we just thought that something was missing." He looked over to Blaine with a smile, and Blaine could hardly contain his excitement. They were really going to do this.
"We came to the conclusion that we were both ready for this next step in our lives, and with the time in our careers, this was the perfect opportunity to do this."
"Do what?" Carole asked.
Kurt looked over at Blaine and they shared a smile. They had talked about this before, and decided that Blaine would be the one to tell the two of them. That was until they were right here in the middle of doing so. Instead, they spoke together.
"We're having a baby."
It was silent then, the four of them just looking at each other until Burt spoke. "Don't mess with my heart, Kurt."
"It's true, dad," he said with a laugh. "We have a surrogate, and this is our fifteen week ultrasound. We wanted you guys to be a part of it because we know how much you guys have been wanting this."
"We didn't want to say anything too soon because of the worries that come with having a surrogate," Blaine explained. "But things are looking really great. We decided that it was time to tell people, and you two are the first people on our list."
Carole let out a squeal of delight before rushing forward and wrapping them both in a hug. Blaine couldn't stop his smile as she squeezed them, and when she pulled back, she had tears in her eyes. Blaine knew that they did the right thing including them in this.
She started babbling her excitement, almost jumping up and down. Burt took a step closer, and they looked over to him. "I'm going to be a grandfather?"
Kurt nodded, and Burt surged forward in scooped Kurt into his arms. Blaine laughed as Kurt let out a yelp. The tears started then for all of them. Burt grabbed Blaine next, holding onto him for a while, but Blaine didn't mind. Everything was perfect. This was exactly the reaction he wanted from them.
"Am I interrupting?"
The four of them turned and saw a smiling Rachel standing in front of the door. She held her hand on her stomach in a way that she had grown accustomed to.
It took a minute before Burt and Carole seemed to put the pieces together, and then Carole let out another squeal before rushing over to hug Rachel.
"You three are something else," Burt told them, grabbing both Kurt and Blaine for another hug. "I can't believe you guys are giving me the one thing that I really want more than anything. Thank you."
They talked a little more about how it came to be before heading inside for their appointment. They were lucky enough that their doctor really liked them, because most doctors wouldn't have let all of them back like theirs did. Once Rachel was lying down, Kurt and Blaine stood on the opposite side of the doctor as Carole and Burt took the seats. It took a few minutes to prepare before there was finally an image on the screen.
Seeing the small baby on the screen took Blaine's breath away. He clutched Kurt's hand as the doctor explained what they were looking at. They had only seen it once before, but it made Blaine shake with excitement.
"I can't believe this," Burt murmured from across the room. He was tearing up again, and it made everything that they did to get here worth it. "That's my grandbaby."
"Doctor Riley," Kurt spoke softly. "Is there anyway to see what the sex is? We were really hoping that we'd be able to tell. I know that it usually takes until twenty weeks but-"
"Shh," Blaine cut him off, kissing his cheek. The rambling wasn't helping.
"Let me see if we can get a closer look."
"I hope it's a girl," Rachel spoke for the first time. "I read that girls are easier to give birth to."
"Myth," Blaine told her, ducking under her glare. "I really just hope that he's healthy. I don't care what the sex is."
"Oh, the baby is very healthy," Doctor Riley assured them. "The heartbeat is steady, and I can't find anything wrong. She's right on track for fifteen months."
There was a small beat before they realized what he said.
"Wait," Kurt said quickly, turning to the doctor. "She?"
"I can't be one hundred percent positive, but there is nothing there to show me otherwise. She is in the perfect position to show off. It's probably a ninety-eight percent chance that you guys are having a baby girl."
"She's going to be just like her Auntie Rachel!" Rachel beamed, reaching out for Kurt or Blaine's hand. Kurt got to her first. "I'm so excited we get to share this experience together."
Blaine couldn't handle it anymore. This was just too much to not do anything about, so he reached forward and kissed Kurt's lips without second thought. Kurt responded instantly, kissing back eagerly.
"I love you so much," Blaine breathed against Kurt's lips. "I love you and I love our baby girl so much that my heart is going to explode."
Kurt giggled, bumping their noses together. "I think I love you guys so much more."
Blaine just smiled and held on as the room celebrated. All that Blaine could focus on was the screen showing their little girl. Soon enough, they were going to have a little baby brought into this world, and it was going to be the start of this big chapter. Blaine couldn't wait. He wanted her here now, but being able to spend the time until she comes with Kurt figuring everything out was good enough.
-4-
Time sped by, and Kurt was hit with the realization that the nursery needed complete before the third trimester started. You could never be too careful when expecting the baby. Their little angel could come sooner rather than later, although Kurt really didn't wait that to happen. He wanted her to be as healthy as can be, and usually coming early meant slight to many complications. He wanted her on their due date and not a minute later.
After many discussions, or what Kurt liked to call disagreements, he and Blaine finally settled on a theme for their nursery. Blaine wanted to take the regular pink baby route, while Kurt wanted to play around with gender-neutral colors in case another little presence would come in the few years they were going to be in the apartment. It was a little cutthroat until they both settled on meeting in the middle. Much to Kurt's dismay, they were still sticking with a purple for the walls, but that was all Blaine got to contribute. The furniture was all up to Kurt, and he may have gone a little overboard with it, but hey, his baby deserves the best.
The room was almost finished when Rachel was hitting her five-month mark, and Kurt and Blaine were busy putting the fine tuning touches one afternoon when they finally discussed what needed to be discussed.
"Damn it," Kurt snapped, retracting his hand after it had been pinched. "This crib is a bitch."
"You're the one that had to have this particular one, remember?" Blaine shot back, voice a little distressed as he tried to snap the two pieces in place. "I do remember me say, 'Oh, Kurt, that one looks really complicated. Why don't we get this one that doesn't cost how much we make with one show, and the assembly will be a piece of cake?'"
Kurt rolled his eyes, knowing very well that those words were said exactly like that. He was second guessing his choice now, but he'd never let Blaine know that. "Our little girl is going to have the best."
"Yeah, yeah," he mumbled under his breath. Kurt reached forward and squatted his head before picking up the directions to make sure they were on track. "Now after you get that snapped in, the rest is going to be a breeze."
"That's what you said about the base, and now look where we are an hour later." He glared up through his eyelashes, and Kurt couldn't bring it in him to be upset by his husband's tone. They were just both on edge. "Just-if you would help me snap this in, we'd be almost done."
Kurt sighed. There was no use in not doing it. Sure there was a potential harming to his fingers again, but if it meant they could finish the nursery, Kurt would do anything. He leaned over Blaine, and together they both pushed. Well Blaine pushed while Kurt pulled, and together after a series of grunts, the bar slid into place. Of course, Kurt wasn't expecting it to be that easy, so once it was in he fell to his ass without any support.
"Oof," he grumbled, hand moving to his backside.
Blaine grinned over at him with a bright, gorgeous smile. It was the first time Kurt had seen him smile since they started earlier that morning. Having an idea, Kurt pushed his bottom lip out in a pout, ducking his head. Sure enough, Blaine was moving over to him.
"I'm sorry you just fell on your ass, but it was the funniest thing I've seen all week." He let out a chuckle. "Being locked in this room for two days is driving me a little crazy."
"Me too," Kurt told him. He wrapped his arms around Blaine's neck and pulled him closer. "I'm sorry for being so uptight this past week. I just want everything to be perfect for when she gets here."
"I know, and I do too." Blaine nudged Kurt's nose with his own. "Trust me, she is going to know that she's loved. Look at this room! It's sensational."
"You really think so?" Kurt looked around, seeing how far they've come from the dull white guest room that it had been a week prior.
"I do. I know that I've been giving you a hard time on everything, but I really do love what you did with it. You put so much into it that I would have just left out. Plus, the purple is really beautiful. Pink would have been-"
"Horrible," Kurt said with a shiver. He looked into Blaine's eyes. "We are going to be the best dads in the entire world."
"Yeah we are," Blaine agreed. "We may have some competition with Burt because he was amazing, but with both of us-We are going to be really great, Kurt. I will give her my everything, and I know you'll do the same."
Kurt nodded, smiling softly. "Everyone believes in us. Our little girl is going to be so loved; she won't know anyone who isn't family."
"Oh, god. Do you remember Sam? I think he had a mini heart attack when we told him. And to be honest, I don't ever remember seeing him cry before."
Kurt shook his head, remembering when they decided to tell Blaine's best friend. It was a memory he'd remember forever.
Sam continued to excel with coaching the New Directions, leading them to four consecutive Nationals wins. Kurt and Blaine couldn't be prouder of him, especially since he had seemed to move on from losing not only Mercedes, but Rachel as well. He was doing good, dating many girls every month. Kurt and Blaine just let him do it because that was his way to cope with it. In Kurt's heart, he knew that once Mercedes was ready, they'd get back together. It was just a matter of time.
Kurt and Blaine had invited Sam to New York for a few days to catch up, and were surprised when he actually agreed to do so. After the first day where Blaine and Sam didn't leave the apartment, or the guest room where they set up their game system, Kurt decided to make lunch to get them out. It worked like a charm.
"Kurt, this is the best food I've ever had in my entire life," Sam said with a mouth full.
"Thank you." Kurt shook his head then. "God knows what you are surviving on back in Lima."
"Frozen pizzas and pop tarts."
Kurt kicked Blaine underneath the table then as the conversation stopped. They were going to tell him about the baby. Sam was the first person after Kurt's dad and Carole that Blaine wanted to tell, well apart from his mom and brother. Kurt had to promise Pam that they would call as soon as she was born for her to not get on a plane and come live with them until she came. And fortunately, they dodged a bullet with Cooper because he wanted the baby to be named after him. No way in hell.
Blaine locked eyes with Kurt before nodding his head. "Hey, Sam, there's a reason Kurt and I wanted you to come out here. We are taking a step forward in our lives, and we wanted you to be one of the first people to know about it."
"Dudes, if you are trying to tell me you guys are going to try three-somes, I totally didn't need to know." He paused for a second. "Wait, you don't want me to be the third guy, do you? I'm going to have to draw the line there. I love you guys, but-"
"We aren't doing that," Kurt told him quickly. It was best not to judge when it came to Sam. "This is something much bigger."
"Like what?"
"Well," Blaine started, looking over at Kurt before taking his hand. "Kurt and I are expecting our first child."
The room was silent as Sam flickered his gaze between the two of them. "I'm not the bright tool in the box, or whatever, but guys can't get pregnant, can they?"
Kurt resisted the urge to bang his head against the table. This was Blaine's best friend and his own friend. It was just like talking to a box of rocks sometimes.
"No," Blaine answered, just as calmly as before. "Kurt and I got a surrogate to carry our baby."
"Well Rachel," Kurt spoke. "She offered to carry our baby, and we accepted."
"Dudes!" He stood up from the table them, grabbing Blaine comically out of his seat and into his arms. "Oh my god! My two favorite gay guys are going to be dads! This is incredible! This is just outstanding! This baby is going to have so much talent in its little body that it's going to come out tap dancing!"
Kurt laughed then as Sam came over and hugged him just as tightly. Kurt was slightly taken aback by his reaction, but it was welcoming. Sam pulled back and he looked at both of them. Something crossed over his face, and Kurt then was met with a crying Sam. Blaine moved forward quickly, but the boy just held up his hands.
"I'm just so happy for you guys! My best friend is really growing up with his husband and having babies!"
Kurt smiled as they all hugged again. They spent the rest of the afternoon with Sam giving them baby names, and let's just say they all had the letters: S-A-M.
"That was such an amazing experience we got to have with him," Blaine told him with a smile. "Whenever he calls, he is just so excited for her to come. He's going to be a really great uncle. He can be an uncle right?"
"Actually," Kurt said, taking Blaine's hands. "I was thinking about that for a long while, and I was thinking that maybe we could ask Sam to be our baby's godfather."
Blaine looked at him, eyes getting slightly misty. "You really mean that? Because they would mean so much to me."
"I do mean it," Kurt assured him. "There is no other male figure apart from us in her lives that I'd want to be her godfather other than Sam. I mean, if Cooper was closer and visited more I'd consider him, but I'd feel safer letting Sam take our girl from us rather than Cooper."
"Oh god, me too!" Blaine laughed, head falling to rest on Kurt's shoulder. "Nothing beats when we told Kitty."
Kurt laughed, throwing his head back. "Oh Kitty. I can't believe that I once didn't like the girl when she is just a perfect human being."
Blaine nodded, laughing along with Kurt.
"Okay, boys," Kitty said as she sat down on their couch after being invited over. "If you don't tell me what you've been hiding from me, I'm going to have to take a drastic step to get it, and I'm thinking that vase over there is expensive. You wouldn't want it shattered in pieces."
Kitty attended NYU with Blaine after she graduated from McKinley. She lived in the dorms, and was a permanent part of the boys' life in New York. To be honest, Kurt wouldn't have it any other way. Her presence was just always so lively and whatever came out of her mouth werepure genius and the complete truth. It helped whenever Kurt needed an honest opinion about an audition piece or a gift for Blaine. The three of them really have gotten close.
She was single, and Blaine had made it his mission to get her a man since they had a few classes together throughout Blaine's college career. It always ended in Kitty hitting him repeatedly and Kurt laughing, but Kurt then that they would find her a man that would able to keep up with her. Until then, she was fine with living her life with finishing school and ironically, getting a job at Vogue with Kurt's recommendation. She was in charge of organizing the clothes for certain photo shoots and events, so her and Kurt bonded over that shared interest.
"No vase shattering will be done, thank you very much," Kurt shot over to her as he walked in with a tray of sandwiches for them. "And who says we are hiding anything?"
"Oh please, Mr. Golden Eyes over there looks like he is about to explode whenever I've seen him for the past two months."
Kurt sent a glare over to his husband before sitting down next to her as Blaine took the chair across from them.
"We do have something to tell you," Blaine told her. "Something that we are really excited about, and we wanted you to be one of the first we told."
She looked at both of them, crossing her arms. "Please don't tell me you guys are like moving or anything. This is where I come to get my free Friday night dinners."
"No, we are staying right here." Kurt looked down and took a deep breath. "We are actually in the process of having a baby."
"You're shitting me right?" she asked, looking at the two of them with her mouth open. "In the process, what does that mean?"
"Rachel offered to be our surrogate, and we accepted." Blaine smiled, looking at Kurt quickly before back to her. "She's three months along now."
"Oh my-I freaking knew it!" She reached out and slapped Kurt's leg. "I knew she was getting pudgy, and I thought to myself that she might be preggers, and it's not even her baby! It's your guys!"
Kurt took a hold of her slapping hand, squeezing it in his own to stop the assault. "We are really excited for you to be apart of our baby's life."
Her face softened then, her tough exterior fading as she reached out and hugged him tightly. "You know, in high school I would have never pictured myself here with you guys telling me this, but I wouldn't change it for anything because I really feel special. All jokes aside, thank you so much for telling me. I know you guys are going to be really great dads because I can actually stand you unlike the other millions in this city. And trust me-Aunt Kitty is going to be the greatest aunt ever."
Kurt smiled brightly, squeezing her hand tightly. Blaine leaned over and took her other hand. "You know, in high school, you were such a bitch-"
"Guilty."
"But I'm glad that we've been able to form this relationship with you, Kitty," Blaine told her. "And we are so excited to have you be our babies crazy, yet somewhat sweet and endearing aunt."
"And whenever they need a break from their pops, Aunt Kitty will be here to show them how to party."
Kurt shook his head with a roll of his eyes. "You are something else."
"And when you guys are horny and need someone, I got you. This baby is going to be so lucky to have an aunt like me, so caring and loving."
They all laughed and she hugged Kurt again before moving over to Blaine to hug him as well. "Congrats you guys, really. I'm there whenever you need me. Call me up, and I'll be here before you know it. Let's celebrate!"
They all toasted sandwiches with laughs.
"I just love how we got to tell everyone and how all of them reacted was perfect," Blaine told him against Kurt's shoulder. "We had Tina and Artie wanting every detail with Tina bawling her eyes out and proclaiming that we were the first from high school to have a baby."
"Santana and Brittany were very abusive about it, but sweet in their own way," Kurt said with a roll of his eyes. "Santana was extra soft after warming up to the idea of a baby that is either a mix between me and Rachel or you and Rachel. Brittany was just so very confused."
Blaine nodded, laughing. "Mr. Schue started going on and on about how old he was getting to have his students having a kid. That was before bursting out in tears."
"You know, a lot of the people we told cried," Kurt said. He laughed with Blaine, resting his cheek against the top of his husband's head. "After getting in touch with everyone we could in person, I think our Facebook post was really perfect."
"Yeah and the call that we got from Puck was worth it. The death threats against our unborn baby because we didn't call him and tell him. He was the supposed team Klaine captain."
"And Quinn was upset that we didn't ask her to be the surrogate like we had planned since high school."
Quietness settled over the two of them as they smiled at the memories. Kurt closed his eyes and tried to imagine what this room would be like in three months. They'd officially have their baby and be starting with their new family. It was so exciting to think about.
"What are we gonna name her?" Blaine asked suddenly. "I know that we've thrown names around in the past, but I've been thinking about it a lot. I want a name for her."
"Well," Kurt said, playing with Blaine's fingers. "We have our favorites don't we?"
"We do." Blaine squeezed Kurt's hand. "I'm still partial to Fettuccine."
That made Kurt laugh hard as he remembered the elevator memory like it was yesterday. "Oh, Blaine. I'm not naming our first-born daughter after a pasta dish. It was a cute idea back then, but hell no."
"Okay, okay." There was a pause. "I really like Katy."
"And I'm not naming our child after a washed out pop singer that hasn't had a hit in years, sweetheart."
"I know just what riles you up, baby."
"This is serious," Kurt said suddenly. "What names would you like her to have, Blaine?"
"I would really love to incorporate your mom in her name, just like if we have a son, I'd want to incorporate Finn. Just like Lizzy or Elizabeth."
It was so sweet, it really was. Kurt would love to name their baby after his mom, but he wasn't sure doing the first name. "How about her middle name is Elizabeth like her daddy's."
"I think that is perfect," Blaine told him. "What name do you like?"
"Well I was thinking like Patty or Lisa, but those are like older names that I wouldn't really want our first baby to have."
They paused, thinking about it. Blaine spoke first, "You know, I remember when we were making that video for Mr. Schue and we were just joking around with Quinn about her donating the eggs and the different names."
"Hepburn and Tracy," Kurt recalled.
"I really like Tracy." Blaine pulled back to look at Kurt. "Tracy Elizabeth Anderson-Hummel."
It was like a shock went through Kurt, the name sounding absolutely perfect coming out of his husband's mouth. Suddenly, he knew that there was no other option. That was going to be their child's name.
"I can't wait for Tracy to get here."
Blaine looked up at him, eyes wide. "Really? You really like that?"
"I love it, and I can't wait to have her here so we can call her it." He leaned forward and kissed Blaine deeply. "Although, I think we should rethink Hepburn. I don't want our son getting teased."
"Well cross that bridge when it comes," Blaine murmured against his lips. "Until then, we can just stick with our little Tracy."
"Our little Tracy," Kurt repeated before sealing it with one more kiss to Blaine's lips.
A/N: Hey guys! Sorry this is so late. I haven't had any time to post or write this little note. Better late than never is what I always say! Here's part two of our four part journey! I really hope you guys like it as much as I like it.
This episode…I'm still not ready to talk about it. I just wanted to focus on what our boys did with their lives after we saw them at that locker. I took some of it from the script of the episode that I got from the Box Scene project. They said something about Blaine being a Grammy nominee and Kurt selling his own jewelry. I thought those were cool little facts that I could throw in there. I hope I did our boys justice.
So I just want to say that I'm insanely proud of Darren. I know, I know, I always say this in my notes. I can't help it! I just am so crazy about this kid it's ridiculous. I just-with all the Hedwig pics that are being released and looking at my own that I snuck and took during the show, I just feel like a proud mama! He's just a little ball of energy and talent. I can't wait to go back and see how good he has gotten since I've heard so much great things about him improving!
I just want to say, I thought that life without Glee would be worse than it really is. I like to thank Darren for that. Not only was I in love with Glee, but Darren was a big part of that. Now that he's doing bigger and better things, I'm so happy that I decided to attach myself to him. He gets me so focused on what is going on in his life instead of looking at mine and realizing Glee is really over and it's not coming back. Now don't get me wrong, I love Chris, I really do, but there is just something about Darren that gives him the slight edge. Since I've paid so much money for Darren twice now, I can't swing to go see Chris for his book signing. Everyone who can go should go though!
Thank you to Guest, TotalGleekOut, slybunny20, Sarahamanda Klaine, Jule2408, Rachel Foryth, katharina, nomorecandles, bevjima, KatyCatGleek1694, JodieKlainelover2015, Klainexoxo, GarethGlee14, Oda, and Brittany! Thank you guys so much for your reviews and love. It means so much to see all your support and love! Please keep it up because we only have two more chapters left after this.
I want to hear from everyone! Please don't sit back and not review because this is almost the end. I want to meet you all, so just review and tell me what you think of the story. I'd appreciate it so much!
I have the next part ready to go, and I'm working on the final part. I have to admit that I keep pushing it off as long as I can because I don't want to be finished with Kurt and Blaine. I can't wait to write about our little Tracy! :) And it is a girl for everyone who may doubt. In the script, one of Tina's lines say girl. I'm going off that.
I'll see you guys next time! :)
Final Note: Note to Darren from the tweet he just tweeted- You deserve all the love because you are one of the greatest people to grace this planet. I couldn't imagine giving my love and support to anyone else. You are so humble and loving that you should just get everyone's love. Thank you for being you.
