Disclaimer: I only own Scarlett.
Thanks to everyone's reviews on the last chapter. Saw the movie for the third time today. I'm starting to think I might need a support group. Nevertheless, there's only 2 chapters left until this story ends. I'm a little stuck on how I should end the next chapter. The first part is going to be the ending of the movie but I'm wondering if I should then skip ahead to when Scarlett is as big as a beach ball and have her have the twins. Because in one more chapter, it's going to be another 5 years later, much like the last story. If you are keeping track its 2007 in this story. Which would make the 5 years later be in 2012, when the twins are 5.
Anyway, I'll sleep on it and decide what to do when I'm up at 12 AM, watching Shark Week and doing this on my labtop.
The first thing Scarlett felt upon waking up was a cold breeze ruffling her shirt. Second was an annoying pain on the inside of her arm. Groaning, Scarlett's eyes fluttered open and her blue green eyes began to scan the room. The Joker was standing in front of a window, with three rottweilers behind him. Reaching a hand up into her now unruly hair, Scarlett shook her hand through it slightly before her hands sank down to her stomach. She smiled when she felt her small bump unharmed.
"Oh, Sleeping Beauty, you're up."
Whirling to face her captor, Scarlett's eyes narrowed. "Do you, like, get off on kidnapping pregnant women?"
"I like you. You're fun to mess with."
The Joker then walked away from his post by the window and stopped in front of her. Grabbing her hand, he yanked her up and led her over to the window. Stumbling in her heels, Scarlett suddenly found herself practically pressed up against the glass window, with The Joker holding her hands behind her back. Both ignored the barking of the dogs and the sounds coming from below and above.
"You see those lights?"
Scarlett squinted and in the distance, she saw two shadowy figures. Lights were beaming from both of them and Scarlett concurred that it was the Gotham ferries. Glancing, up her attention was diverted by the pounding from above. The Joker moved her head back down, forcing to look forward.
"Yes," she retorted.
"Let me tell you what fate I have bestowed on them. One boat is full of Gotham's innocent city folk. On the other, we have Harvey Dent's scum prisoners. They're all in on my little joke."
"Which is?"
"I have given them both a choice. You see, they all received detonators and by midnight, I ordered one of the ferries to blow up the other. Tick tock, tick tock, still no fireworks."
"Then what happens if the boats don't blow up?"
"You mean by if some miracle, both of the boats have a conscience," The Joker said, gleefully.
"Yes, you nitwit!"
The Joker then twirled her around and backed her up against the glass. Leaning in close to her ear, he said, "Then everyone on board is going to meet an end."
"Batman will save them," Scarlett hissed.
"Once again, you think the Batman is going to save everyone. He's just a freak. Like me. When they no longer need him, they'll cast him out. Like a leper."
"He's a hero, unlike you."
The Joker's smile turned into a frown and he slammed her up against the glass window. Scarlett winced and closed her eyes. Suddenly, she felt his knife glide over her chest. Cursing when she realized it was a bad idea to wear a low cut shirt, The Joker's knife suddenly cut into the skin above her breast. Wincing at the pain, Scarlett looked down at the wound. It wasn't deep but deep enough to draw out blood.
"I suggest you keep the joking comments to me. Or elseā¦" The Joker's hand snaked down her ribs and over her stomach.
Scarlett looked up at him in anger. Her eyes had turned green, signaling that she was not happy, and without a second hesitation, Scarlett kneed him in the groin. She would have punched him in the face, but a kick to the balls would hurt worse, Scarlett figured. He stumbled as she said, "Don't you ever threaten the life of my child again, you sick bastard!"
The Joker snarled and grabbed her by the arm, throwing her to the ground. As he towered over her, she noticed his attention had turned to behind her. The dogs were barking franticly. He smiled and said, "Ah, you made it! I'm so thrilled!"
Turning around, Scarlett saw Batman standing a few feet away. He had a look of determination on his face. The Joker noticed his eyes on Scarlett, and he reached down to grab her by the hair. His strong hand grasped her ebony hair and she struggled to pry his fingers from her.
"Let her go."
"Very poor choice of words," The Joker said before he threw Scarlett to the side of the room. She hit her head on one of the steel pipes but wasn't knocked unconscious.
Batman gritted his teeth and said, "Where's the detonator?"
The Joker shook his head to the side and nudged the dogs free. "Go get him!"
The dogs instantly obeyed and lunged at the dark knight. As they lunged at him, Batman threw two of the dogs over the side, but one managed to sink his teeth into the suit. Yelling, Batman diposed of the dog before The Joker brutally beat him down and overpowered him with a steel pipe. Inside the cowl, Batman's 'sonar-vision' began malfunctioning and the Joker forced Batman to the ground. Batman threw him off just as quick but eventually, The Joker forced him down again, forcing his head out over the street below. The Joker then trapped him by clamping a steel bar over his neck. As he struggled to keep him down, The Joker said, "We really should stop this fighting. Otherwise, we'll miss the fireworks!"
"There won't be any fireworks."
The Joker smiled and glanced up at the two ferries. Knowing one was about to explode, he said, "And here...we...go!"
But nothing happened. Glancing to a clock behind Scarlett, The Joker frowned when he saw the clock had struck midnight and still no explosion. He also was discouraged when he saw the yong woman get to her feet and glare at him. He turned his focus back to Batman.
"What were you trying to prove? That deep down, everyone's as ugly as you? You're alone."
"You can't rely on anyone these days, you got to do everything yourself," the madman muttered.
The Joker then looked back at the man below him and said, "Don't we? That's okay - I came prepared."
He took out a detonator from his pocket. Fiddling with it, he turned back to the ferries.
"It's a funny world that we live in...speaking of which, you wanna know how I got these scars?"
"No, but I know how you got these!"
Batman then fired his steel spike protrusions from his gauntlet, hitting the Joker's hand and releasing his grip on the detonator and Batman. Batman then grabbed him and threw him over the edge of the skyscraper. Falling and laughing at the same time, The Joker was in freefall until he was caught by Batman's grappling wire and hoisted up to where Batman was crouching. The Joker moaned in disappointment as he was raised up to the bat's eye level.
"Ugh, you. You just couldn't let me go, could you? This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. You...truly are...incorruptible, aren't you, huh? You won't kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness. And I won't kill you...because you're just too much fun,' The Joker said, laughing gleefully.
"I think you and I are destined to do this forever."
"You'll be in a padded cell forever," Batman growled.
"Maybe we could share one! You know, they'll be doubling up the rate this city's inhabitants are losing their minds."
"This city just showed you that it's full of people ready to believe in good."
"Until their spirits break completely! Until they get a good look at the real Harvey Dent and all the heroic things he's done. You didn't think I'd risk losing the battle for Gotham's soul in a fist fight with you? No. You need an ace in the hole. Mine's Harvey."
A look of realization came over Batman's face. Now he knew why The Joker did what he did to Harvey and knew that, all along, the psychopath had counted on Rachel taking Scarlett's place, and for Harvey to lose it. "What did you do to him?"
"I took Gotham's "White Knight" and I...brought him down to our level. It wasn't hard. You see, madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little push!"
The Joker began to laugh hysterically and Batman scowled. Below, he heard the SWAT team beginning to make their way onto the floor. They were shouting orders at each other and Batman took it as his cue to leave. Standing, Batman looked over to Scarlett who was leaning up against a metal pole. He walked over to her and took her head into his hands, carefully inspecting her for any injuries.
"Are you alright?"
Scarlett nodded and said, "Just a bump on the head."
"The baby?"
"Fine," Scarlett said.
Batman then took her hand and began to lead her towards the elevator, passing The Joker on the way. Scarlett looked over to him and he smiled at her, waving goodbye. Shaking her head, they continued to walk until she realized what Batman was doing. He was going to leave her with armed guards.
"I hope you don't think your just going to leave me with the SWAT team."
"I'm putting Gordon in charge of you. You'll be safe with him. I'm going after Harvey."
Yanking her arm from his grasp, Scarlett said, "Oh no you're not. I'm coming with you. There's room for two on the Batpod."
"No, you're not coming with me."
"Yes, I am," Scarlett argued.
"Why?"
Scarlett smirked and said, "Because it seems everytime you let me go off on my own, I end up kidnapped."
Batman smiled at her and said, "Fair enough."
He then turned from the elevators and walked over to the staircase. He glanced down and looked back at Scarlett. Her face went from satisfaction to horror. Pulling her to him, Batman said, "Hang on."
She nodded and wrapped his arms around his neck. A second later, Scarlett felt a freefalling sensation and she laughed. She loved to fly and got a kick out of it. When they landed on the concrete ground, Batman led her over to the Batpod and climbed onto the motercycle-like contraption. Scarlett swung her leg over the side, and wrapped her arms tightly around his waist, resting her chin on his shoulder. She watched as Batman put his hand to his ear. He seemed to be getting a call of some kind. Two minutes passed and he looked back at her with a grim look on his face.
"Harvey is holding Gordon's family hostage."
"What? Why?"
"He blames Gordon for Rachel's death."
"But The Joker killed her, not Gordon."
"He blames Gordon for not catching The Joker in time," Batman growled, "I have to stop him. Are you sure you want to come?"
"Yes," Scarlett whispered.
"Then hang on."
Minutes later, they arrived at the burned down hospital. Scarlett was surprised to see that a parking garage was still standing. As Batman helped her off the bike, Scarlett glanced over to the burned down rubble and bit her lip. Kicking a piece of concrete with her red high heel, she watched Batman survey the area. Her eyes inspected all the yellow tape, telling anyone to stay away from the concrete mess.
"Why here, Harvey," Batman muttered to himself.
"Rachel. She died here. Her body was inside during the explosion. They hadn't moved her yet," Scarlett said.
Batman nodded before he began to walk towards the parking garage. Scarlett followed close behind and upon reaching the stairs, both began to climb them slowly, not knowing which level Harvey was on with Gordon's family. As they reached the 3rd floor, Scarlett stopped. Batman turned to her and watched her eyes as they glanced over into a dark opening.
"I hear something," she said.
Batman nodded and walked into the rubble surrounding the 3rd floor. There, in the distance, Scarlett could make out three figures sitting against a stone pillar. Gordon was sitting in the gravel and Harvey was yelling at him. Knowing her heels would ruin a surprise attack, Scarlett slipped them off and held them in her hand.
"Stay close," Batman said.
She nodded and they began to make their way to the scene, staying in the shadows at all times. As they got closer, Scarlett could hear the argument Harvey and Gordon were having.
"You wouldn't dare try to justify yourself if you knew what I lost. Have you ever had to listen to the person you love most tell you it's going to be alright? To have to listen to them say those words, when you know that it's not and you know they are going to die on an operating table next to you? Well, you're about to know what it feels like, Gordon. Then you can look me in the eye and tell me you're sorry."
"You're not going to hurt my family," Gordon said.
Stopping behind a pillar that was to Harvey's left, the two figures crouched down. Batman turned to Scarlett and said, "Stay here. Don't move."
Scarlett nodded and watched as Batman begin to make his way over to the other figures; but he disappeared into the shadows and she couldn't see him. For her part, Scarlett continued to listen to the argument. Over on her right, a few fett away, she saw Gordon's wife, daughter, and son cowering and she bit her lip, scared for them. She watched as Harvey moved over to Gordon's wife and children with his gun out.
"No, just the person you love most."
He then pointed the gun at Gordon's wife. "Is it your wife?"
"Put the gun down Dent! Please," Gordon whispered.
Scarlett held back a gasp as Harvey moved the gun to Gordon's daughter.
"Please," Gordon said.
Harvey then put the gun to Gordon's son. Scarlett had half a brain to go and help Gordon's family, but Batman had told her to stay put. She would, unless the occasion called for it.
"Goddamn it, will you STOP POINTING THE GUN AT MY FAMILY?!"
Harvey smiled at the boy and said, "We have a winner."
She watched as Harvey grabbed Gordon's terrified son and saw the desperation on Gordon's face. Gordon't wife, Barbara, reached out for her son and screamed, No! Jim, stop him, no!"
"Oh my God, hurry up Bruce," Scarlett whispered.
Cliffhanger. Well, not really since I assume you've all seen the movie. If you have not, GO SEE IT! So I don't kill the ending for some of you.
Thanks for the reviews, again. Feel free to leave some more. They brighten my day.
