Chapter 12: Skating

Kaoru's POV:

I led the twins down a crowding street.

'It's like nothing have changed….'

"Mom, slow down!"

I stopped and turned to see Soyaki and Yahiru making their way through a crowd of people.

Yahiru accidentally bumped a tall russet-haired young man with her shoulder.

The man glared down at Yahiru.

Yahiru noticed his glare and arched an eyebrow. "Yes?"

"You bumped me," the man said.

"Sorry then," Yahiru apologized.

"Watch it next time, our boss don't like it when people get into his way," another man said who was standing next to the first one.

I walked over to them and rested my hands on Yahiru's shoulders.

"Is there a problem here?" I asked coolly.

"This girl bumped my boss!" the second man said.

I narrowed my eyes and the russet-haired man. "Oh but I thought I heard her apologized."

The russet-haired man stared at me. "I'm fine with that."

I smiled. "Then we must get going."

"Wait!" the russet-haired man stopped us before we walked away. "Have we met before?" he asked me.

I shook my head. "Sorry, no, I only came to this city today."

He frowned. "You look familiar, are you sure this is the first time you've came here?"

I forced on a smile, hiding my impatience. "I'm sure I don't know you. We really have to get going." With that I led the twins away quickly.

"That's a strange man," Soyaki murmured.

"And he's rude too," Yahiru added.

"Some things just never change here," I said.

"Mom! Mom! Look, can we go to that shop?" Yahiru pointed at a skateboard store.

"Yeah why not?"

We walking into the shop and Yahiru immediately rushed off to look at the skateboards.

"These are cool skateboards, not like the ones we got, they're so plain but these here are very creative designed too," Soyaki said as he picked up one and examined it closely. "Very well made too, mine break easily back at home."

"So you're not from here?"

We turned and saw a young man standing there with a smile.

"Yes, we're from other places," I answered.

"Oh is it? Then do you need any help? You speak Japanese very well," he said, "And my name is Tary."

"We'll just look around thank you," I said politely.

"Well I'm by the counter if you need anything," he said and walked off.

'Tary? That name sounds familiar…..'

I walked around and found Yahiru, she turned to us.

"Mom, can you please buy me this one?" Yahiru showed me a skateboard with a vicious tiger picture on it.

"You've got one at home," I said.

"But that one is a plain green one and I didn't bring it with us!"

"Sorry but no."

"Mom! Please, just this once!" she pleaded.

I narrowed my eyes at her.

"Please?"

I sighed. "Only this once."

"Yeah! You're the greatest mom ever!"

I rolled my eyes. "That's what you always say."

I glanced at Soyaki. "And you?"

"Huh?" he blinked.

"Don't you want one?" I asked.

"Um…..can I?"

I jerked my head towards the shelves. "Pick one."

He smiled and went to decide.

"Hi Tary!" I heard someone said in the front.

"Oh hi."

"So how's work?"

"Nothing much new…. How about you? Decided to be my wife yet?"

"Tary Tamson! Stop asking will you, I'm not ready yet!"

'Tary Tamson?!' Then I remembered. Tary was in the same class as me when we were in the seventh grade.

I peered around the selves and saw a young woman talking to Tary.

'How nice….talking to the person you love…..' I started to wonder if I really should see Butch.

"Mother I picked out one."

I snapped out of my thoughts and turned to the twins. Soyaki picked out a skateboard with a skull and flames on it.

"Then let's go," I said.

After paying for the skateboards I took them to the park where I used to skate at.

I sat on a bench and watched them skate around.

"Hey Soyaki look at this!" Yahiru yelled and did an Air Walk.

"Well then…" Soyaki did a backflip.

Some little kids clapped as they did some more tricks.

After a while they came back to me, breathing heavily.

I handed them each a bottle of coke which I bought earlier.

"You're both good," I said as they sat down next to me.

"Mom, can you show us some of your skating moves?" Yahiru asked suddenly.

"Huh?"

"Yeah mother, you know how to skate right?" Soyaki said.

"Well….yeah….."

"Please mom!" Yahiru said sweetly.

I stood up and picked up Soyaki's skateboard. "You two really except a lot from me huh?" I tease.

I set down the skateboard in front of me and started to skate.

I did a lot of difficult tricks but it was fun. It's been a while since I skated but I still know all my moves.

I spun in the air, feeling the wind blow through my hair before I landed.

People have gathered to watch me. Soyaki stared at me with awe and Yahiru was cheering, whistling loudly.

It felt great to skate again, spinning in the air and feeling the speed.

I did some more tricks before going back to the twins.

A lot of people clapped.

"Mom! I never knew you were so great!" Yahiru said with admiration. Soyaki nodded in agreement.

"It had been some time since I last skated," I said.

"Mother." Soyaki was looking pass me. "It's that man we bumped into earlier."

I turned and saw the russet-haired man walking towards us. But this time he was alone.

"Wait here," I told the twins before walking up to him.

"That was very amazing skills you have there," he said once I was in front of him.

"Thank you," I said flatly, "Is there anything I can help with?"

"That's a very cold tune you're using. Relax, I'm no harm to you."

I narrowed my eyes at him. "I'm leaving if you don't get to the point."

He smiled. "Same as always."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"Those skating moves…..as far as I know….. only one person can do it…." He said while gazing at me.

I growled. "If you don't hav–"

"You're Matsubara Kaoru right?"

My eyes widened. "Huh?"

He grinned. "Long time no see, Kaoru."

"Do I know you?" I asked.

He laughed. "Don't you remember? I'm Mitch."

"Mitch?!" I gasped.

He nodded and looked over my shoulder. "Are those your children?"

'If he knows they're my kids then he might tell my family or something….'

"Ah…..no, they're my friend's. I'm just showing them around," I said quickly.

"Well….would you like to have some tea with me?" he asked. "I'd like to know how you've been doing lately."

"But I promised Soyaki and Yahiru to show them around."

He smiled. "So their names are Soyaki and Yahiru huh? Very nice. They can explore some places themselves, there isn't a lot of gangsters these days so it's safe."

"Well….."

'I might get some informations of my family and friends from him….' I thought 'And maybe some about Butch…..'

"I'll tell the twins then," I said before walking to the twins.

"Can you two go off without me for a while? That is an old friend of mine so….we'll chat a little."

"OK," Yahiru said brightly.

Soyaki nodded. "I'm fine with that, we'll go back to the hotel later, I'll use my GPS on my phone."

"Thanks," I said and ruffled their hair before walking off to where Mitch is waiting.

"I know a café that was built last year, it's great there," he said and he led me away.

Yahiru's POV:

I watched as mom walked off with her old friend.

As they turned the corner I started pulling Soyaki.

"Come on! Let's go!" I said.

"Where to?" he asked as he got onto his skateboard.

I hopped onto mine and started to skate off. Soyaki doesn't have a choice but to follow.

We skated through some streets, passing shops.

"Where are you going?" Soyaki called from behind.

"Mmmmm….just wondering around."

He sped up till he was next to me. "Just wondering around huh?"

"Something wrong with that?" I asked.

"No…."

"Let's have a race!" I said and sped up.

"Hey, you got the head start!" I heard Soyaki yell.

Suddenly a crow swooped down at us.

I ducked just in time but Soyaki didn't have much luck.

The crow swooped pass his face, Soyaki yelped with surprise, lose his balance and fell off his skateboard.

I laughed at him. "You're actually so clumsy!" I yelled.

"Hey wait! We must stick together, that's what mom said!" he shouted.

"Then catch me first!" I yelled back and skated away while he was getting up.

I skated through some alleys; I keep glancing over my shoulder to see if Soyaki have caught up yet.

I turned a corner but I wasn't looking where I was going and bumped into someone.
