A/N: This chapter mirrors More Than You, Chapter 16
Knocking on the general's door, Nicola waited to be allowed in before standing in front of his desk. "How can I help you, Lieutenant?"
She hesitated before straightening her back even further and tried to find her voice. Having never truly wanting to be military, Nicola sometimes fell back into a childhood state of needing to ask permission, of having to speak to someone of authority. It was not her training that had made her so aware of military regulations and how things intricately worked; it was the upbringing under her father and the disastrous first posting she had suffered. "The mission you're sending Daniel on, sir, I think I'd be better suited to join him than remain here studying a Goa'uld soldier."
"I can't send a military presence in, Lieutenant." She already knew that, and already had her argument worded in her head. It had been the same with her father – prepare a valid reason and he would be unlikely to say no.
"I understand and appreciate that, sir, but I'm also a doctor, an archaeologist just as Daniel is. I've done my share of digs and trekking through jungles, not as a military officer." He looked like he was considering the notion. "And seeing as it is dangerous territory, perhaps I could be of more use than any of the other non-military archaeologists."
"You will not have any military authority. There is no guarantee of any back up, so do not reveal your military background."
"Yes, sir."
"And I don't need to remind you to not take any weapons."
"Of course, sir. Why would an archaeologist carry a weapon?" She smiled and he nodded at her, dismissing her. Releasing a long slow breath once outside of the general's office, Nicola was actually mildly excited about a mission to South America and a search for the Fountain of Youth.
