HTTYD:The Dragon Crystals

Chapter 14: Dragon Calls

I wake up as the sun rises and get out of bed to prepare myself for my day. NorthWind looks at me curiously, and I giggle. "I wonder what Hiccup will teach us today," I say to myself.

As we head down, I see my Mom making breakfast. I help get the table ready, and as soon as that's finished, she prepares the plates and sets them on the table.

"So," she says, "are you meeting up with Hiccup later on?"

I nod as Spark jumps into my lap.

"Take Spark out with you," my Mom suggests. "I bet he would love a little fresh air.

"Alright, I will," I nod as I finish eating, put my plate in the sink, put on my boots and head outside. Spark jumps on NorthWind's back as we walk to the arena, and once we get there, Hiccup looks up at me and smiles.

"Good morning, Jade," he says. "You're here early...and you have Spark."

"Yep," I say, nodding. "So what are we going to learn today? I'm up for anything." As the others arrive, we stand in a straight line as Hiccup stands in front of us.

"Okay," he says. "Today, we are going to work on dragon calls. I know, we've already covered that, but Jade is new, and she needs to learn some."

Snotlout snorts. "Aww, little-miss-dragon tamer doesn't know all the calls."

I ball my fists, but calm down. I shoot him an ice-cold death glare, and Hiccup looks down at Spark. "You can teach Spark some calls so he'll listen to your mom," he says.

I smile, and Hiccup calls Fishlegs forward. "Okay, Fishlegs," he says. "Call your dragon, if you would."

Fishlegs nods and lets out a howl, and instantly, Mealug comes flying towards us, landing in front of Fishlegs.

"Wow, that's so cool, Fishlegs," I say as Meatlug lies down on the ground.

"Okay, watch this, Jade," Hiccup says dramatically. "You will love this."

He shouts out a roar that doesn't sound human, and Toothless comes running into the arena and gives Hiccup a big lick. I stare at Hiccup in amazement. "Wow," I say. "That's really cool, Hiccup."

Toothless looks at spark and growls lowly.

"Toothless, he's my Mom's dragon," I say. "He won't hurt you."

Toothless then purrs, and Hiccup looks at me with a smile. "Okay, Jade," he says. "Your turn. Tell Northwind to go to the far end of the ring, and then try calling her."

I nod as I point to where Hiccup had said, and Northwind walks over and sits down. "Okay," Hiccup says, "now think of a sound that will let her know to come over."

Northwind looks at me expectantly, but try as I might, I can't think up a call for her.

"Don't worry, Jade," Hiccup says. "Maybe a sign will get her to come to you."

Snotlout begins laughing as he watches me try to come up with a call, and I feel angry and embarrassed both at once.

The longer I try, the louder Snotlout's laughs become until he's practically drowning it. I blush and shake my head, but he doesn't stop. At long last, when I can't stand another second of his laughter, I let out a loud, screeching roar. Snotlout quiets instantly, and Northwind rushes up to me.

"Wow, Jade," Hiccup says. "I didn't know you had that kind of voice."

I blush as I use a small chirp for Spark. He jumps on my arm, and Fishlegs smiles brightly. "Hey, Jade," he says, "can you teach me how to do that? I mean, that was so cool."

I giggle. "Sure," I say, "if it's okay with Hiccup. He does know a lot about dragons."

I can see Hiccup trying (and failing) to hide his blush. "Sure, you can teach Fishlegs, and the other riders if you like," Hiccup says.

Spark jumps on Hiccup's arm, and Hiccup laughs and pats his head. Snotlout crosses his arms and tosses his head.

"Well," Snotlout says, "if you can call your dragon, then try calling mine over. He won't be as easy as your dragon."

I shrug and let out a soft but loud roar, and to my satisfaction, Hookfang comes running over. I pat his head when he stops in front of me, and Snotlout stares, his mouth hanging open. "But he doesn't listen to anyone!" Snotlout cries.

We leave the Academy afterwards, Hiccup and I walking together. "Good job with Hookfang," he says. "I knew you had it in you."

I hide a blush and laugh softly. "I guess I just got lucky, that's all," I say.

Hiccup shakes his head. "No, I mean it. You could be a great dragon tamer one day."

I smile and blush deep red. "Thanks, Hiccup," I say. "That means a lot to me."

He smiles and heads back to his home, and I turn to Northwind. "Do you think I could be a good dragon tamer?" I ask. She licks me, and I laugh. "You know that doesn't wash out."

She purrs, and the two of us walk back to the village.
