CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Zetsu had walked into the cave with out any preamble. Emi was frozen in shock and I was forced to move her forward with a tug at the chains connecting us. She whimpered to me as we walked forward into the dark slowly.
"Why don't you teleport away?" she asked in a voice so small I nearly missed it, I thought about her question as we walked in the utter darkness. It was cold and my bare feet scratched against the rock on the cave floor.
"I wouldn't be able to get us both out far enough away." I relented weakly, feeling utterly pathetic at the admission. We couldn't hear Zetsu any more, granted we had barely been able to hear him before. Now the entire place was silent, my feet feeling out the floor, it had smoothed considerably.
"So? You can leave and tell Tsunade." Her voice was still so quiet, it cracked slightly as fresh tears fell from her eyes.
"They would kill you. I wouldn't be able to deal with that." I told her softly, resting my hand on her shoulder awkwardly due to the chains. Thinking to myself about how she was my rock now, my anchor, and her death would break me into nothing.
Emi was still crying softly to herself, she was good and being quiet. I could almost feel my ear twitched when it picked up the ever so faint sound of a menacing chuckle. My entire body tensed and I jolted to a stop. Emi followed my example and froze in her place, slightly behind me.
"Who is there?" I all but screamed into the darkness, my voice reverberating off of several walls I assumed. I gripped at the space where my hammer should have been resting across my back. I blanched when I remembered that Tobi had taken all of our weapons and sealed them on a scroll that was then placed somewhere on his person.
Emi had gone into shut down mode, her tears stopped, her breathing evened, I imagined her eyes were blank, her mind in protection mode. Her hands would have been in her kunai pouch if she still had it.
Our chain rattled slightly as Emi shifted her captured hand around. I heard the air breeze out or her mouth as she mouthed several words before stepping out next to me. I saw a spark in her hand before it expanded into a hand full of fire on her palm. I moved her arm back and lobbed it forward.
The little ball of fire flew several feet away and illuminated the area around it briefly. Before us were ten chairs, all filled and all in a row; like a council that sat on their proverbial thrones. The fire died at the feet of Pein, his piercings gleaming in the dim short lived light.
All of my muscles were clenched tightly, waiting for an attack of any kind. I shifted so Emi was behind me again.
"What do you want from us, Pein?" I hissed at where I remembered the man to be sitting, Emi was still shut down though her breathing was slightly irregular at the sight of the Akatsuki before us.
"We would simply like to study your abilities. Your friend will simply help us as a medic." His voice was calm and nonchalant. I growled low in my throat in response.
"You will NOT study me; I am not some science experiment!" I roared at the man I still could not see, I wondered briefly if any of them could see me. I turned my head towards Emi to tell her my new plan.
"Hold my end of the chain, I am going to try to kill him then get us out." My voice was little more than a breeze; I begged in my mind that none of them heard me. Emi did say anything in response but I felt her hand grope around my arm until her fingers wrapped around the metal cuff.
In retrospect, I should have known better, should have known that they could see me and most probably hear me.
These thoughts, however, did not cross my mind while it was in a heated frenzied state as it was at the moment I implemented my plan.
I focused on where I had seen Pein sitting then shifted my mind to think about the area just behind him as I felt the smooth metal surface of a single senbon that I had wedged under the metal plate over my sleeve. I felt the jerking sensation of teleportation after I tugged the senbon out of its hiding place.
The only way I could tell I had even moved was the freed flesh of my wrist, I saw the vague shape of a skull in front of me due to the close proximity. I held the senbon just behind the neck of Pein when I was slammed into from the side.
The senbon flew from my fist and clattered to the ground with a ting of metal on stone. Emi's gasp filled the air along with my wheezing inhales. Emi tossed another ball of fire and I saw bright Sharingan eyes peering at me in the new found light before the fire faded.
My mind spun in fright at the sight of the Sharingan eyes, they blazed brightly in my eyes but I never fell into the genjutsu haze that they were supposed to cause. Itachi's weight was still forcing my arms down, I thought of his empty chair and the jerking took over.
Itachi's weight was gone and I was standing on the chair, I jumped off and grabbed the heavy wooden seat. Emi tossed another ball of fire, this one bigger and staying in the air longer. Itachi was before me again and I swung that chair with all my might, he dodge and the chair collided with a confused Kisame's arm sharply. I growled in fury at the sudden attack, jumping up from his chair to join the apparent fray.
I was gone before either of them could attack; I grabbed Emi's hand and started running. My mind focused on one thing, Tsunade. I had learned that it was easier the teleport with a person when thinking about a person instead of a place. I felt the jerking but it was instantly stopped when I felt Chakra coursing through my body freely.
I cursed loudly and collapsed in pain; Emi fell forward but stayed standing. I screamed at her to run but I knew she was still there; little lamps on the walls had started lighting as we ran. Slowly the darkness ebbed away as the Chakra burned through me like fire; my sight flickered and brightened sharply before dimming.
I glanced back and saw bright red of Sasori, little blue strings roping me to his hands before my vision went black in the new light.
