A bit of record keeping: To guest: Saludos. No sé. Pero ése es algo que debo pensar alrededor y actuar quizá sobre. También Iblison tendrá sus manos por completo en la historia siguiente como se vuelve la raza fuerte y hostil. Gracias mucho por sus comentarios. Alberto Verde.

SVEN: That enemy that the Asgard and the Terrans had fought against is an original idea of yours, right? Cause I can't remember any episode dealing with an enemy like that.

AlbertG: Original of mine? No. In association of Ash's Boomstick, yes. What could have been…

Chapter Fourteen

The interview

Part II

Earth-New York Kobollian Embassy

"Thank all of the gods!' Tyberi silently praised.

This short two minute break was the blessing he needed in order to recover from what had to be one of the more intense questions and answer sessions he was ever subjected to. Not only had they made him seem like he questioned his own beliefs but Elosha had contradicted him in front of the billions that had to be watching this program. Literally billions of people all over the Earth had seen him falter and appear to be unsure. Of course, it had to be the billions of people here on Earth watching as this event was far too important for the masses not to. But the questions that were asked were at the edge of being disrespectful and that was not something that he was used to, or to be honest, expected. At home, his word was literally the law. People respected if not outright revered him because of his spiritual connection to the gods. Here, in their earthly ignorance, they seemed to care less and that was a dilemma that put their mission in jeopardy. The people of this world was truly alien; he could see that now. They weren't like the colonies at all. Even if this was Earth, it wasn't the Earth he expected it to be when he came rushing here to be one of the first to convert the masses. They cared nothing for their ancestral world, if it was indeed the home of humanity. No! He couldn't think like that now. There was already too much that had been said.

If he were honest, he would have admitted that he was terrified of Earth. The cultures here were too dynamic and malleable and he feared what expose would do to the young if they were to come here in droves. Earth would change, yes but so would the Colonies. In a couple of generations who knew how the Colonies might change?

By the gods, what has happened? Even singing the sacred hymns no longer brought him peace and comfort in this gods-abandoned world. Had it been only nine days?

Then there was Elosha whose agenda was apparently no in synch with his. Sadly he had expected better, with her being a former member of the Synod she should have known not to cause dissension in the ranks. Worse, he felt unsure of himself in light of everything. Their religions were so similar yet so different from his own and he dreaded the idea of meeting other religious leaders trying to force him to reevaluate everything he knew–or thought he knew to be true.

But the worst fear, the one that threatened to give him seizures, was how Livia would react when she saw this interview that he'd so impressively screw up, using that popular Terran term. Although Livia would never admit it, she was frightened as well and with Ursula fanning the flames who know what might happen? Like him Livia truly expected the Terrans to flock to the holy banner, rushing to discover the truth of the gods. Well, nine days was enough to dissuade him of that notion. However Livia, most Holy ordained of the Twelve, what would be her reaction?

The High Priest was suddenly anxious that his superior might well fan the flames of war to protect their home's beliefs…and her own power. With her dreams shot to hades, what might she do to protect her home from the evils of Terran religion infecting the Colonies?

"Twenty seconds before we're back on the air," Latasha Klopton whispered towards them.

He nodded quickly and turned to Elosha. "please–allow me to answer that last question," he urgently requested."

"No," she answered. "I will complete my answer for myself. I don't care what Livia thinks. She isn't here."

She knew what he was thinking! Frack!

"We're live in five…four…three…"

"And we're back with our esteemed Colonial quests. High Priestess Elosha Gale, will you please continue?"

"Thank you. To finish answering your question," she continued, ignoring her red-faced and very distraught counterpart. She knew that the very last thing Tyberi wanted was to be contradicted by one of his own but this had to be said. "I don't believe that we Colonials should interfere with the culture or religion of other worlds. We should not force compliance with beliefs that are not part of Colonial culture. I've glimpsed Earth culture and religions and it is more complicated and ancient than I could have ever imagined. You have beliefs that predate our own. However as my Colleague has said, I am here to learn and to try to understand. If there are Earth people who wish to learn more about my beliefs then I am open to listen and speak of such things."

"Father, would you like to say something?" Latasha urged gently as she stared hat her guest who was clearly chomping at the bit to rebut his counterpart.

Ursula was going to furious about this and therefore Livia would be livid. Why couldn't Elosha keep her personal opinions to herself? She had just placed him in an untenable position. His position as leader and High Priest was in supreme jeopardy. That witch Ursula was likely already writing letters to Livia about the disaster at the Art museum, and this interview blaming him for everything that's happened. This entire mission was doomed before they could really begin and he wondered if he might be able to salvage anything. "My comments are personal and don't reflect the views of my government in any way," he said.

"Father Tyberi, you've already implied that if those human populated worlds were encountered then their freedom of religious choice and therefore speech would be suppressed because they're weren't as advanced as the Colonies."

Tyberi swallowed. "I didn't imply that."

"Yes, you did, Father," Gale said not unkindly. "Earth is one world. Would you agree that Earth religions should naturally dominate our belief in the gods because they are stronger than we?"

"Never!" 'Please don't do this', the man prayed. "You've misconstrued my entire statement!"

"But, by your response to Natasha's questions, it is what you've implied," the High Priestess answered gently but succeeded only in earning a hateful glare in return. "What we believed is not what we now know."

"What do you mean?" prompted Natasha.

Gale smiled gently. "We're still in the process of learning about you and your people. I will be able to better answer that question when I understand the right questions to ask myself."

The reporter looked disappointed. "So I won't get an answer to my question?"

"Not yet, I'm afraid."

"Are you sure you won't answer the question?"

She just shook her head, smiling.

"Okay, changing the subject..."

The look of pure relief was evident on Tyberi's face. Who would have thought that the old cow would have contradicted him like this in front of everyone, especially now? Most importantly, why had she done this? Was she being vindictive against him for some reason? He would find out later after this was over.

"On a lighter note: How long are you missionaries planning to stay here on planet Earth?"

"The original plan was to stay one year, and by that I mean one Terran year, studying the people, and culture, and we plan visiting different points of interest on the planet."

"Will you be visiting only the United States of America?" asked the reporter.

"It is my wish to visit as many parts of the world as we could," said Patrenus. "However, our permits are limited to the United States of America, Canada, England, France, Germany, Japan, Greece, Italy, South Africa, and maybe a couple more countries. Most of the countries have denied our requests to visit them. Russia and China have rejected our request as have many of the Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia, and Israel. In Israel's case, it is less of a religious problem as much as it is a political problem. It is not the safest place to be at this time so they prefer to err on the side of caution."

"As you can see, this is a very intense schedule to be achieved in one year," interjected priestess Gale. "We may not be able to achieve our original goals as two of our fellow missionaries will be unable to perform the specified tasks. We've lost one of our valued associates and another's been injured. As such, we will have to rearrange and plan our visits here in accordance with the time we have."

"Do you plan on establishing any churches in your time here?"

"No."

"Yes," Tyberi said at the exact same moment. "What I, what we mean is that if the opportunity arises and if your people demand it, then we will devise something."

"If," Elosha broke in, "we have the time among all of our other duties. I believe now is the time for examination not procreation." Her counterpart looked at her as if he wanted to scream.

"And on that note – thank you very much. We will return in a moment."

Hello, were back with our guests, High Priest, Tyberi Patrenus and High Priestess Elosha Gale, members of the religious leadership of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. I'm Natasha Klopton. Earlier in the discussion you mentioned comparisons between your religion and the Greek – Roman beliefs of Earth and I wanted to expand a little bit more on that. On Earth, it was the use of animal sacrifice. My question is do you sacrifice animals as part of your religious beliefs?"

"The practice of sacrificing animals is still done by certain sects, on special occasions," Elosha began. "However the majority of the temples and the people do not sacrifice animals to the gods. That particular practice went out of style hundreds of years ago."

"Why?"

"You must understand doing those times when we arrived at the colony worlds, food was at a premium and the traditional sacrificing of animals was a drain on vital supplies so that practice as a necessity out of style. Today, most sacrifices to the gods are done with fruit offerings. The great majority of our people today consider animal sacrifice a barbaric practice. But like here on Earth, there are a few who still practice animal sacrifice."

"Do you believe in the afterlife?"

"Yes," answered Patrenus. "Ours is very similar to your Roman/Greek beliefs in the afterlife. In some ways it's like your heaven. If we are good and follow the gods will, then we will be awarded for our actions in the afterlife. Your people may call it heaven, we call it the fields of Elysium, but essentially it is the same thing. Like your monotheist beliefs, we practice confession for the absolution of sins. Our Brothers and Sisters, who function like your priests and ministers, will listen to their confessions, and the sins will be absolved. Occasionally, there may be a small pendants for example, a food sacrifice being offered to the gods in order to appease them and help those being absolved appease the gods with their prayers of supplication, That particular practice again depends on what colony you represent, and what particular deity you believe in. It is very similar to your Catholic approach. I believe your people say, 'bless me, father, for I have sinned'. We say 'bless me, Brother for I have acted against the example of the gods'. Our priest or Brother would then say proceed, in the name of the gods', and the confession would begin. After the confessions over then it would end by the priest, or brother saying, 'you absolved in the example of the gods'. So as you can see it is very similar to your own practices."

"And what if you've been bad?"

"Then you end up in Hades' domain to suffer for your sins for eternity."

"You said that your doctrine has changed over the years. Now who determines the doctrine that you follow?"

This time Priestess Gale was the one to answer. "The Synod interprets doctrine for the people. In the church of Athena, we have a total of twelve high priests one representing each colony. Of those twelve priests and priestess, there's one who is the leader, comparable to your pope, with the other high priests acting as archbishops. They can be male or female. We also have Brothers and Sisters, who act as priests and priestesses who go among the people serve their needs. The current elected leader is High Priestess Olivia Sytomia, First Priestess of the gods. She is the patron priestess of Athena was considered by many in the colonies, the equal of Zeus."

"How is the High Priest Elected?"

"He or she is elected from the ranks of twelve High Priests of the Colonies. The Brothers and Sisters come together in enclave to elect the new Chosen Speaker of the gods. After prayer, the votes are tallied and the First Priest is decided. The term is for life."

One last question before we go on break. Have you considered placing the sacred scrolls on our internet for all to see and examine?"

"I hadn't thought about that," Tyberi admitted. "It may be a wise thing to do so that your religious leaders can examine them and discover the truth."

"We'll be back in a moment."

"Hello, ladies and gentlemen. We're glad that you've continued to stay with us for the second half of our in-depth interviews with the Colonials of the Cyrannus star system. I'm Julian Donovan and I am proud to introduce Ambassador Richard Adar, former President of the United Colonies of Kobol. And, we have Doctor Daniel Jackson rejoining us, live via satellite. Welcome, Mr. President."

"Thank you very much, Ms. Donovan. I'm glad to be here."

"We know that you participated in a secret conference involving Earth's allies, several days ago. Now that the meeting is over and public knowledge, can you tell us what role will the Colonials play in this new developing Alliance?

"At this point in time, the Colonial role in this new alliance hasn't yet been defined. But we are hopeful that we will be play a significant role in these upcoming events involving the formation of a new stellar federation."

"At this time, nothing's been decided?"

"That is correct."

"The current Colonial ambassador, Ambassador Agasha hasn't made any announcement concerning his status. Are you taking over his position as chief ambassador?"

"No. Ambassador Agasha has done and is doing an exemplary job despite the uniqueness of the situation. He will continue to maintain his position as ambassador to Terra. My position is somewhat different. I am the ambassador representing the colonies of Kobol with the different Allied worlds of Earth. It is my responsibility to develop and maintain friendly, cooperative, and in the future, closer relations with the allies of your planet."

"As he former President of the Cyrannus star system, is it possible for you to explain how Earth, according to your beliefs, might be the Thirteenth colony? If this Thirteenth Tribe left the Kobollian star system almost two thousand years before the colonies left, how do you know the name of Earth and what are star system looks like? Was this some kind of contact between that colony and your world before you left, or did some of those colonists return to give you a description of what Earth was like?"

"The incident you're referring to happen almost four thousand years ago and although we have the sacred scrolls that speaks of the journey, we are not exactly sure of the sequence in which those events occurred in. It is generally inferred by the scrolls that the Earth colony left two thousand years before the rest of us. But one can also deduce that the Earth colony left after the original Twelve Colonies took to the stars. What we do know is that Earth was located in a star system of a yellow sun, the third planet from the sun, with nine major planets comprising the entire system."

"That means that you are saying that the people of Earth haven't been on this planet for more than six thousand years at the maximum. Now we know that we've had archaeological evidence of villages existing for more than twenty thousand years. Approximately six thousand years ago, the goa'uld known as Ra visited this world and took slaves seeding the galaxy with humanity from Earth. Mr. Ambassador, the numbers don't match."

"Yes," he sighed heavily. "I was made aware of that fact when I came here. I just point out some major inconsistencies between what we know to be true and what is factual about Earth. Earth's star system matches what we have seen in the scrolls, but I'm afraid that we are going to be forced to reevaluate the scrolls and to do additional research noted to discover the truth."

"Dr. Jackson do you have anything to say about this?"

"Yes, I do. Although this sounds unlikely at first glance, I suspect that the Earth that the Colonials traveled to is not the same Earth that we standing on right now. The ones called the Ancients, were very advanced race and they did a lot of terraforming throughout the galaxy. It is entirely possible that the planet that the Thirteenth Tribe traveled to was a very close approximation to our Earth. That would explain some of the inconsistencies and it may explain why that star system looks so similar to ours. It may also explain the time differences. Archaeological research has uncovered evidence that humans in one form or another have been in evidence for millions of years. This is indication that we been here for a very, very long time, far longer than your records show. We're not sure but there may be evidence that the original Colonials of the Kobollian star system were transplanted from Earth, not the other way around."

Adar looked shocked but not as shocked as he should've been, and that in itself said volumes to hose watching. "Do you have any specific evidence of this?"

"No, I don't," answered Daniel. "I'm not saying that your people were transplanted by the goa'uld. It's entirely possible that some other race was involved as Lords of Kobol don't seem to fit the goa'uld profile. If it did most likely you will still be living with Stone Age technology, and we wouldn't be having this conversation. Your government has told us that you are exploring the planet Kobol so your archeologists may find out some of those answers."

Ambassador Adar seemed to lose focus for a moment. "It's apparent that Earth and the Colonies are connected in ways that, try as we might, we don't fully yet understand. We are all, after all, humans with a common heritage. Whether mankind originated on Earth, or Kobol, or maybe we originated somewhere else 'out there', may not be the real question we should be asking ourselves. What we are discussing right now is the past and although important, it may be keeping us from realizing the real questions we should be asking ourselves. Right now, we should not be asking 'where did we come from', but 'what are we going to do right now'. Earth, although it's very powerful, is only one planet. The other worlds if you ally with them, would still only bring you up to about a third of the population of the Colonies. Instead of trying to dominate one another or threatened each other with bombs and weapons designed to kill, we should be looking towards a brighter future will we as when people can come together and become more than what we are now. I've been on this planet for a short period of time and I've seen wonders to match anything on my worlds. If the things that I've seen just this week were to summarize what I think of your planet then my first assumptions would be that this world was more technologically advanced in most ways when compared to the Colonies.

But those first impressions obviously wouldn't be the truth. My people have commodities, materials, and technologies that you don't have. Our ability to build ships far exceeds your capabilities. We've been in space for thousands of years, in the process developing our personal protective space equipment superior to anything that you have right now. We have the resources to build, we have resources and the people to help protect those who cannot protect themselves. The Protected Planets Treaty is something that I've just gotten a chance to really go over this week and I must agree with Doctor Jackson's opinion. I find it an amazing document not because of its content but because of what it implies. There are dozens, possibly hundreds of planets where humanity exists in one form or another. Whether they were kidnapped by the goa'uld, brought to the world by aliens, found some means on their own to get to those worlds, or transported there by the gods, it doesn't matter. They all are children of humanity and need to be protected as best we can until they can stand strong on their own. This is a terrible responsibility insuring that all these different worlds are protected from those who would exploit or even destroy them.

"Earth doesn't have to do this alone which only one of the reasons why you have searched for allies. The Colonies, your brothers and sisters, can be a major asset, allies that you can depend on it will come to your aid when needed, not because of any monetary or technological gains but because we are family. There are enemies out there that we MUST present a united front against. You speak of the goa'uld as the enemy of mankind everywhere. Well here we are, waiting to do our part to help keep humanity safe from such evils and that's another reason why we're here, not just to promote our culture but to protect our freedoms."

"That sounds very nice, Mr. President. (Once a president, always a president, Daniel reminded himself. "However, many of the planets under the PPT have suffered from the goa'uld who have posed as gods for generations. Those worlds were forced to worship them. I was there and personally saw the way your people responded when we tried to avoid the subject of religion and what happened after we told them that Earth didn't follow the gods – your gods. I still remember the speech Admiral Cain sent across every frequency on Earth – that you could access," he added. "According to her, which means your government, we the Tau'ri had denied the truth about humankind and the true birth home of Earth. You called us usurpers, liars and that we persecutors of the true religion, not to mention that we are to give up the Cylons, surrender and escort your warships to Earth so that you could take over and I quote here 'rights given back to the people of Earth'. Forgive me but that was a declaration of war under your presidency."

"For which I take full responsibility. My people exceeded their authority, but as I said that incident was my responsibility and my burden to keep."

"History is full of mistakes, Mr. Pres. and hopefully we learn from them. However, if we had lost, whose intentions of your government to force us to follow a religion that the majority of this planet doesn't believe because you said so. We would have been forced to follow your gods because you would have forced your culture and religious beliefs on us whether we wanted to or not. What's the difference between you and the goa'uld? That's the problem and is something that we had to deal with when interacting with other cultures. The majority of those less advanced worlds are recovering from the tyranny of the false gods and establishing themselves and their own beliefs. Now we Terrans have similar problems on Earth. There are many accounts in our history of invaders forcing their religious beliefs upon their subjects. When we did so it was usually a disaster in the making. We've learned to keep our religious beliefs to ourselves when we're dealing with other worlds. It's not easy. Yes, we have missionaries and yes we have people in our government that would love nothing more than to convert every last human to their way of thinking. But we Terrans are growing, even though we're still young," he smirked. "That doesn't mean that we won't speak to them if they're curious. But we won't force religion on them and point in fact we've made laws concerning that. Can you say the same?"

"We've discovered two previously unknown worlds with humans, likely abandoned hundreds of years ago by the goa'uld. We encouraged them to understand their lost culture and embrace the true gods."

"In other words, you forced them into accepting your religion."

"Yes," answered a very stiff-faced Adar. The ambassador understood the logic of Jackson's argument however his was a Colonial and his culture defined who and what he was. "Perhaps you're correct in separating religion and government, when it comes to interacting with non-Colonial worlds," he added. "That is something that we may examine in the future. If it is in our best interests, then we will do so. It won't be easy for us to change. Change doesn't come overnight."

"The young don't always listen," muttered a distracted Daniel.

"What does that mean?" snapped a somewhat indignant Adar. "Are you implying that the Colonial people are children?" He said the words with enough venom to get his point across which was the point entirely as he was a professional politician.

"It's just something that I have to remind myself of occasionally, like every few hours this week," he uttered, more to himself than to anyone else. "So will you plan to spread your religion throughout the galaxy?"

"No more than you are likely trying to do, with your own missionaries trying to get to every new world they find. We are not ashamed of our cultural beliefs, Doctor Jackson. If there are worlds out there that wish to share our cultural beliefs and our shared heritage, then we will not stand in their way of their embracing an honorable culture that has stood for thousands of years. Doctor Jackson, have you considered that your lack of a unified world belief has been responsible for the continual fracturing of your people?"

"No, I don't. Freedom of religion is the right of every person as long as it does not impugn upon the rights of others. We're still struggling with this but we're working on it and in its way I makes us stronger, not weaker."

"Isn't that the summation of the human soul, those words, 'we're working on it'?" asked Adar. "Religious and cultural differences will be with us always and we are not here to endlessly debate them; however we are here to apply our passions toward establishing a peaceful co-existence. In less than three weeks, the State of the Colonies address by President Goesel will be broadcasted across the width of the Colonies of Kobol. I can't speak for him. I don't know what he will say but I do know that he will address the relationship between your people and mine. It's been made clear to me by the President that we're not interested in war despite the wishes by some of the more vocal opponents on both sides."

Sensing an opportunity to jump in, Julian Donovan started speaking again. "We have time for a couple more questions. Mr. Ambassador, there's been a lot of speculation about the relationship between your people, and the cylons. Now that we have them under our protection, would this remain a factor that will continue to divide Earth and the Colonies?"

"Our creations turned on us and try to destroy us. There was an uneasy peace between us for more than forty years. We created a buffer zone to keep us from attacking each other. Although the war caused much death and destruction we were willing to extend the branch of peace to the Cylon. They repaid us by infiltrating our society with artificial human beings for the purpose of sabotage and espionage and the ultimate destruction of the colonies. They had no interests in making or maintaining a lasting peace between the two people. Our intelligence agents discovered the extent of their plans when we caught one of their human form creations attempting to sabotage our main military software systems that controlled the functionality of all of our ships. It was their intention to somehow coerce some of our greatest scientists into allowing them access to our military software programs that controlled all of our vessels. At that time we had no idea that they were creating human form to infiltrate and destroy us from within with the intentions of striking at us through our own computers. It was only by the grace of the gods that we discovered their treachery in time. Once we realized the threat, we truly understood the depth of their hatred against us. There was nothing else that we could do except go to war to remove the threat. They were the ones that started the war. We were the ones to finish it. As President of the Twelve original Colonies of Kobol, I had a responsibility to do everything in my power to protect the people and our way of life against those enemies that sought to destroy us completely. Naturally, we hunted them down and destroyed as many of the abominations as we could. As president, I wanted peace between our two people. Theirs was a different choice.

"I would have done everything in my power to bring a lasting peace between the Cylons and ourselves but upon discovering what they had planned for humanity, trying to broker another peace attempt would have been impossible and irresponsible. They engineered themselves to look like us, but they aren't us. I felt a personal betrayal by our creations that they would be willing to destroy us all, yet constantly scream that they were our children. Children don't try to butcher their parents," he hissed. "Billions of my people felt the same way and we resolved to end this nightmare once and for all. When they came to you looking for refuge and you offered it to them, my people did not respond well to that." He refrained from smirking at that understatement. "You were sheltering our enemies, those who would have gladly killed every last one of us. Given half a chance they would do the same thing to you. I warn you, you are sheltering a many- headed hydra next to your hearts and it will destroy you if you're not careful."

"We fought alongside the Asgard in the replicator wars so we're certainly aware of the dangers. We've also dealt with artificial life forms before and each time the results were different. Your Cylons aren't the same as the replicators and in fact they are considered by us and several of our allies as a branch of humanity. One of the phrases that was their mantra for some time was 'we are humanity's children'. By our definition, the cylon clones are human. Whether they were given birth to or grown in vats, it makes no difference. What does matter are their current actions now and in the future, like anybody else."

"There was a time when your argument might have persuaded me to consider your words, Doctor, but that was before they attempted to slaughter my people. We gave them the opportunity to come to meet with us for forty years to try to achieve some type of peaceful settlement and they threw it in our faces. You're wrong, they're not human; they are machines wearing human bodies. If we had the opportunity we'd end their threat for the good of all humanity. They are dangerous and that is what you don't understand. I applaud your 'humanity' but you are applying human virtues to machines imitating mankind."

"But there had to be some clues that these cylons were more than simply machines," said Donovan. "Didn't changes in their actions exceed their programming in some obvious way? Someone should have noticed. Didn't you suspect that your cylons might revolt?"

"By the time that we were aware of the problem, it was too late. They were integrated in all walks of life. They were everywhere. Were there signs? Yes. But we ignored them and paid the price."

"Would you consider your actions against the cylons a form of slavery?"

"No," Adar flatly stated. "They were machines, nothing more. You can't reason with a machine. I would have had them all deactivated. But I must clarify something for your viewers. The original cylons were machines, nothing more. They were not flesh and blood like the human-forms you've given refuge to. They are the result of horrific experimentation performed by the original cylons to create an infiltration unit that couldn't be detected by us in order to complete their ultimate goal–the extermination of the lifeform known as Man."

"They were created by the original cylons," interrupted Daniel. "However, what they have become, what they are becoming is more than what they started out as."

"I think we should agree to disagree on this particular issue, Doctor. History is going to prove one of us right, one way or another."

"And with that I must end our interview as our time has run out. I want to thank all of our guests, The Colonial priests Tyberi Patrenus and Elosha Gale, Ambassador Richard Adar of the Colonies of Kobol, and Doctor Daniel Jackson. We hope that you'll come back and continue our discussion."

"Thank you for having me here again, Julian and Natasha."

"And we thank you for having us here. It's been an enlightening experience."

"We'll be back after a final word from our sponsors…"
