. 14 .
Jace's breath caught in his throat. In one fluid moment, he was pinned against the wall struggling to breathe with his toes inches off of the ground.
Jonathan Morgenstern flashed a grin, his black eyes swallowing Jace whole. "Hello, brother. Have you missed me?"
"Stay the fuck away from my brother!" Jace spat.
Jonathan winced, "Mm. Afraid I can't do that, baby brother. He will have to die, one way…or another…In fact, he is slowly bleeding out as we speak. But once he is dead then you'll have a new parabatai, do not worry."
Jace's eyes moved to where Alec lay on the floor beside the bed. He would've been at Jonathan's feet, Jace thought. He saw a pool of undoubtedly blood spreading onto the wooden floor. He could hear the soft whimpering and harsh, shallow breath leaving his brother's lips. He swallowed his own whimper; pleading with a monster was pointless.
Hurry up, Magnus. Please, hurry!
"You tried to kill him. That night, it was you in the rafters with him. Wasn't it?"
The monster smiled. "Somehow I knew you would figure it out. You always were a clever boy, no?" He shrugged, "But, as you see, my plan didn't work. He isn't dead. Don't worry though. He will be soon. And then all can carry on as planned."
"As planned?"
"Don't worry, there will be numerous deaths, however, you will not be amongst those who die. No, I have a different plan for you…"
"Jace?" Isabelle called from the front door of the apartment.
Jonathan's eyes flickered behind his so called "brother" towards the noise. "I'll keep in touch," he whispered. "If you're smart, you won't come after me, Jace."
"If you ever thought that I would do that, you're clueless," Jace growled.
The man smirked. "Spend some quality time with your parabatai, Jace. He won't be around much longer and I advise making the most of it while you can."
He broke off with a hiss, dropping Jace to let him crumple to the ground and gasp for air before franticly getting to his feet. He stared at the stele lodged in Jonathan's side and frowned in confusion. Jonathan's black eyes fell onto the source of the throw.
Alec was propped up against the wall, his chest heaving, but a glow of hatred shone in his eyes. Anyone who threatened his parabatai had his condemnation.
He looks like a real Shadowhunter again, Jace thought absently.
Jonathan ripped out the stele and moved to hurl it back at him for the kill only to be tackled by Jace. They fought for dominance over the blade for a long moment until a spark of blue flashed from the doorway. Magnus's eyes immediately found Alec, a flame igniting in them at his rage when he saw his state. However, that mere couple seconds were enough for Jonathan to slam the flat side of the blade into Jace's head and manage to escape his hold. He dodged numerous shots of blue fire from the warlock and leapt through the window, vanishing once again into the frigid night. Isabelle ran to her brother's side, while Magnus went immediately to Alec, who had slid back down to the floor clutching the wound in his stomach which was bleeding profusely.
"Alec! Alec, baby, shh, shh," Magnus cooed franticly, "It's going to be okay, I promise. Just stay calm and keep breathing alright?"
He lowered his boyfriend to the floor, cradling his head. Alec's breathing was shallow and hoarse, his strength greatly depleted having not had much to begin with. The warlock removed the boy's shirt earning him a grimace from Alec and he hushed the boy while murmuring how sorry he was. Magnus's hands shone blue as he began to tend to the wound. When his palms touched the wound Alexander gasped more out of surprise than pain before slowly relaxing as the pain began to fade away ever so slowly.
"Jace!" Isabelle took him by the arm and aided him in sitting up. Blood was dripping down the side of his face from the gash in his temple. He felt disoriented, but it was rapidly replaced by the fear of losing his parabatai. Isabelle came into his sight once more, her face consumed with worry. "Jace, are you alright?"
"We have to go after him," was all he said. He stood shakily and swallowed when his eyes found his parabatai. His hand went to the Rune that he and Alexander shared; he could feel the pain that Alec was feeling and, if only a fraction of it, it still was enough to take his breath away. He looked to Magnus for reassurance but the warlock was intently focused on his work and Jace felt it best to let him get to it. If anyone could save Alec, it was Magnus.
Turning his gaze to Isabelle, he returned the small nod she offered. "Let's go. He could still be in the area and there's nothing we can do here." He turned to Magnus, "We'll be back in an hour. Keep my brother safe."
And with that, the two Shadowhunters headed for the streets to search for the illusive fugitive, leaving Magnus alone to tend to Alexander.
oooOOOooo
It took forty five minutes for Magnus to completely heal the wound. Alexander lost consciousness fifteen minutes in, letting Magnus cry alone. Once the warlock was satisfied that the wound was healed adamantly, he returned his lover to the bed once more. Sweat was evident on his face and torso, his hair damp, his lips slightly parted, and his chest rising and falling slowly in his slumber. Retrieving a warm, wet cloth from the bathroom, Magnus began to dab it to Alexander's skin in an attempt to soothe the boy further.
Alec's eyes fluttered open and found Magnus sitting on the bed beside him. He wetted his lips before attempting to speak. His voice was hoarse and had a husky quality to it when he asked, "Is he gone?"
"Yah, babe," Magnus confirmed. "He's gone."
"Jace…"
"Is okay," Magnus finished. "He and Isabelle went out to search the area. They'll be back soon."
"Who was he? Why did he try and—and…"
Magnus sighed, not having the energy to explain everything at the moment so he shortened his answer to merely, "His name is Jonathan Morgenstern. He is a fugitive amongst Shadowhunters. Jace seems to believe he wants you dead, but we've no idea as to why yet. However, from his actions tonight I believe that he does indeed want you dead." Seeing Alec's eyes widen with fear, Magnus continued, "Don't worry, angel. I won't let anyone hurt you anymore. I'm so sorry this happened to you…Never again, I promise…"
"It's okay…Not your fault," Alec offered, his eyes drifting closed. His hand patted the duvet beside him weakly, "Lay with me? Please…"
Magnus didn't object. He crawled under the duvet and pulled Alec against him greedily, smiling when Alec curled into him and tucked his head under the warlock's chin. Magnus stroked his love's back, drawing lazy circles, while his other hand ran through Alec's dark locks. He could tell that Alec wasn't asleep; he was just lying in the comfort of Magnus's arms.
"I miss this," Magnus whispered. "We used to lay like this every night. I know you're still adjusting and all—and I don't want to rush you by any means—but I really miss this. I miss holding you whenever I want, I miss kissing you whenever I want, I miss all of the late nights we had—"
"Magnus," Alec whispered in reply.
"Sorry, I know I'm rambling. I just want things to go back to normal. I don't want you to be in the danger that you are with Jonathan running around, I don't want you to not remember me, I—"
Alec touched his lips to Magnus's in a feather light manner, his eyes remaining closed the entire time. Magnus, taken by surprise, was frozen stiff for a moment in shock. Alec pulled away and met Magnus's cat eyes with his own ocean blue orbs, a small smirk toying at his lips, "Shh."
The warlock returned the smile as he moved his lips back to Alexander's. The boy didn't move or pull away, but instead melted into the kiss. Magnus held out the kiss for a long moment, loving the familiar softness of Alec's lips on his own. He asked for entrance, running his tongue along Alexander's bottom lip and Alec permitted it. Magnus moaned at the beautiful taste of his lover—peppermint—and went over every inch of the boy's mouth until a familiar sound reached his ears. Alec was moaning with pleasure and soon his tongue was dancing with the warlock's in an everlasting song.
When the pair finally broke apart, they were both left gasping and out of breath. Alec nestled up against Magnus once more and gripped the warlock's shirt as if it were an anchor.
Magnus held the Shadowhunter close to him, perfectly content and happier than he had been in a long time. "I love you, Alexander."
The only answer he received was the soft, familiar snoring in the darkness. The warlock grinned and chuckled to himself before kissing Alec's forehead.
"My beautiful angel."
