'Dear God, if you're out there, I'm sorry for everything that I've done. I hate the fact that I was jealous, and insecure. I don't think we've ever talked before, but I guess now is as good a time as any. I'm mad at the fact that I sacrificed my entire relationship and my life just because I thought my love was cheating on me. I know I don't deserve anything precious you've ever given me. My friends, Fairy Tail, Ur, Natsu. Look, I don't know if you're out there, I don't know if you're even real but…'
Gray wheezed as every breath he took wracked his rib cage. Three of the fragile bones had already been cracked, that was for sure. He was put into a padded cell, hands and feet chained together. Somewhere on the second floor of the building, away from any and everything else, he sat alone. Gajeel had left him alone for the time being, letting him sit and think about what he had done, like some type of brutal time out. All he could do was think; all he could do was wait. And while he was doing these he decided to do something else. Pray.
First time for everything, right?
'All I ask is that you keep them safe and even though I don't deserve to make it out alive…I just ask that you protect Natsu, and for once…don't let him try to be the hero...' He continued to pray but was cut short at the noises coming from outside.
"I'm back." A voice sounded as if it was coming from the door right next to Gray.
Jellal?
Why was Jellal here? He was supposed to be dead, right? Gray remembered how he had gotten here. How much pain he had went through, how strangled he felt when his mark tried to kill him. Jellal was in on this, that was obvious, but what could he be gaining from helping Gajeel? Gray didn't have anything worth taking.
"You've been going out every night since you got him for me." That was Gajeel, the twisting in Gray's stomach showed his whole body knew.
"Had to check on some business of my own."
"Just make sure you keep that business separate from mine." Gajeel grunted. A loud banging soon echoed throughout the hall and Gray swallowed a lump in his throat.
"What is that?! More of your 'business'?" Gajeel seemed upset and Gray could almost hear the mile in Jellal's voice.
"It seems my little flame has followed me here. Wonderful."
"Wonderful? Fucking wonderful-!?" Gajeel started and Jellal cut him off.
"This should be no problem for you, right Gajeel? Just take him down, and you won't have to worry about Gray going anywhere. Footsteps signaled someone walking away, most likely Jellal. They came rhythmically, in sets of threes.
Bang. Bang. Bang. Sounding like a very loud knock, almost irritated. No one moved on the inside and Gray's stomach started catching butterflies
Bang. Bang Bang. A little louder this time, was showing how the person was already losing their patience. Gray's insides started doing flips this time.
BOOM BOOM BOOM.
Final warning.
No way, Gray only knew one person that knocked like that. He remembered now how it was a part of their training together, to help Natsu control his temper. Gray would always be in the shower while Natsu was out and Natsu would always forget his keys when he came home.
'Just knock in threes and I'll be there.' The ice mage used to smile as he remembered how many times Natsu gave up and simply burned down the door down after the second knock.
WHAM!
An explosion sounded, Gray's room shaking a bit. He tried his best to stand and hobbled over to the door, the tiny glass widow only showing a small portion of the room. There was no way that Natsu could have found Gray. No one saw him; no one knew he was gone. Gray had basically disappeared from the world and yet it all seemed too familiar. Large swirls of flames engulfed the room, lighting the area up in bright orange and red light. Suddenly it stretched as far as it could and retreated back to the door, back to its owner.
"N-Natsu!" Gray smiled as his heart thudded in his chest; the bright white scarf billowing while Natsu strode toward Gajeel.
"Shoulda' known you'd be here flame brain. But I don't remember givin' you an invitation."Gajeel grinned as he got ready for this long awaited fight.
"I'm gonna rip your fucking head off." Natsu growled, his eyes glowing as his aura seemed to grow stronger. Natsu wasn't playing games; Gray could tell by the way his chest heaved up and down as if he was losing his patience as well as his breath. Throwing his head back, Natsu roared, the flames engulfing him and shooting out from his fists. The very pressure from the heat was enough to break the glass from Gray's cell, making him turn away to protect his face.
It was a warning. It had to be, just like with animals, Natsu was warning Gajeel that he had crossed the line. Gray opened his eyes and watched. Like the rattlesnake shaking his tail, or the gorilla beating on its chest, Natsu displayed his power, his…anger, letting everyone know just how scared they should be. Gajeel winced, but never faltered and Gray swallowed as his eyes never left the salamander.
"What did you expect from coming up here, huh? Gray's not going anywhere." Gajeel grinned; Natsu stared him down and flexed his fingers.
"What? You don't feel like talkin'? That's new." Gajeel took off after Natsu , his fist flying towards the salamander's face only to be blocked by a swift kick. Natsu didn't talk; kicks and punches flew, each block by their opponents. A sinking feeling began to form in the pit of Gray's stomach as he continued to watch the fight. He never said anything as Natsu walked in because he didn't want to distract the man. He knew he should wait for Natsu, or at least until it looked like Natsu needed help. Attacks continued to tear into the wall and into the fighters and Natsu still hadn't said a word. Natsu roared again, a bright flame catching Gajeel off guard and hitting him full on in the face.
Natsu jumped at the older man through the flames, swinging a powerful left hook at Gajeel. A satisfying smack was heard as the fist connected with Gajeel's cheek. Natsu was wailing on Gajeel, his hands engulfed in flames scorched the pale white skin of Gajeel over and over as they connected. Gajeel finally managed to knock Natsu back a few feet and huffed as he grabbed his stomach, doubling over in pain. It seemed as if Gajeel was close to going down. Gray's stomach clenched even harder as he watched and then remembered something was missing.
"Where's Jellal?" Gray whispered.
A golden magic circle covered the battle ground, letting the two wizards below stop as they looked around for the cause.
"Meteor!" A distinct voice called out and echoed through the room. Natsu felt the rumble of the building and quickly jumped out of the way but Gajeel wasn't so lucky. Hundreds of giant boulders appeared from nowhere and crashed towards the ground, crushing Gajeel underneath their weight and eventually, burying his whole body except for his head and one arm.
Natsu stared in shock as Gajeel struggled weakly to pull himself out of harm's way but immediately stopped as Jellal walked towards him.
"J-Jellal, what the hell?" Gajeel weakly stretched his arm out to grab at the man, one of his eyes closed in pain.
"You always have been a fool Gajeel…" The blue haired wizard sighed, brushing a hair from his face. "You'd think after Juvia you would have learned to pick your allies more wisely." He focused on Natsu and smiled as the man blinked in confusion.
"You…led him here….w-why!?" Gajeel gasped as his head and arm collapsed and lay limp. Jellal smiled and turned toward the dragon and cocked his head to the side.
"Well Natsu, I'm glad you made it here safe, it's been awhile…."
Natsu. Do you remember me? Do you remember the last time we fought each other? The last time you saw me before I 'died'? Probably not, but I remember you.
Jellal smiled as he cuffed the man's tanned cheek, running his fingers over his soft flesh. Jellal's skin burned, aching to touch the man who had changed him so greatly after one meeting. Sure it was dangerous to be this close, of course it was practically suicide to break into the salamander's home and watch him sleep. That was the best part of this, the waiting and anticipating. He loved the feeling of almost getting caught, and silently he hoped that he would.
Just so Natsu would know. Just so the fire breather would finally see what lengths he had gone through just to see him again. Teaming up with an idiot like Gajeel just to see his beloved once again. Jellal had to scoff at the thought. He was starting to sound like Juvia now.
His beloved turned in his sleep, grumbling as he clutched the pillow next to him. Jellal closed his eyes as he took a deep breath, smelling Natsu's scent as he tried to peer into his mind. Of course, thinking of Gray again. Wondering what was taking him so long to get back. It had already been two days and Natsu had been up till late into the night waiting by the door for the ice mage to come home like some love sick dog. Jellal scowled in disgust and shook his head.
"Soon, you won't even remember who Gray is." He mumbled, turning to the bed room window he had came in from. As soon as he placed his foot on the window sill, the shuffling of sheets caused him to stop. He listened for breathing without even turning around, and a sick smile spread across his face.
"And since we are on the subject of Gray…you'd better hurry. Because while you are here pretending to sleep. God only knows what Gajeel is doing to your precious whore. Follow me Natsu. Let me see how strong you've gotten since I've been gone. " And with that he left, leaving Natsu under the covers, eyes wide as his heart beat in horror.
"I-Have to follow…"
It wasn't until now that Natsu was starting to regret coming. As Jellal looked at him he seemed to get this, crazed look in his eye and that infuriated and worried Natsu at the same time. The last thing he wanted out of any of this as bloodshed. Just seeing Gajeel lying like that make his stomach twist in disgust ;not because of the sight of a dead body but because he was killed by someone he thought was a friend. His only regret was that he wasn't the one able to deliver the final blow to Gajeel, and that thought sickened him even more.
"You…you killed him. He was already down…He was your partner and you…" Natsu stepped back.
"That was the past Natsu, look to the future. You'll live longer." Jellal held his hands out and let the glow a bright purple as he began to attack.
