Chapter 14
It was a Thursday evening and Rachel and Amy were in boots getting some bits and pieces, Rachel picked up a few toiletries and bits of make up for herself however soon Amy began to get a bit bored so wandered off on her own, she was beginning to get fed up of still looking like a little girl, she was still very pretty but she wanted to look older somehow, Rachel had started to let her wear a bit of makeup but not enough for anyone to really notice it, she decided she'd try and do something that made her look a lot older. However she knew she couldn't Let Rachel see her buy the stuff she needed.
Firstly Amy went to the hair section, she decided that if she dyed her hair that would be a good place to start, she was fed up of being a brunette and wanted to go for something completely different, so she picked up the blonde hair dye, she hoped it would suit her, she knew her mum would probably go crazy when she saw it but after she'd dyed it there was nothing Rachel could do about it. She then went to the tanning isle and picked up a large bottle of tan, she didn't bother to read the label that said for dark skin only, she just picked It up, finally she got some eye brow tint and put it into her basket, again she didn't bother to read the label. When she got to the till the women gave her a funny look but didn't say anything.
Rachel had eventually got everything she needed, she didn't have a clue where Amy had got to but hoped she wouldn't have gone far as she wanted to get back. Fortunately however it didn't take her long to spot Amy coming out the shop, she was surprised to see she had a large bag in her hand and wondered what was in it.
"Amy" Rachel said loudly so her daughter would hear her, amy spun round and saw her mum
"Oh hi mum" she said sounding a little nervous
"Are you ready to go now love" Rachel asked
"Yep" Amy said
On the walk back to the car Rachel couldn't help but notice how quiet Amy was being normally you wouldn't get a word in edge ways if you had a conversation with Amy.
"Amy what's in that bag?" Rachel asked
"Nothing" Amy said instantly
"Well it can't be nothing it must be something" Rachel said laughing
"It's your Birthday present" Amy said unconvincingly
"Well considering my birthday was in November it's either very late or very early"
"It's personal stuff alright I just didn't want to announce it in front of the whole street like you normally do" Amy hissed
"Oh right but why didn't you get me to get you some stuff, in fact I only just bought you some ..."Rachel began
"Mum just shut about it alright" Amy said before storming off in front of Rachel
Rachel just sighed and rolled her eyes just putting Amy's odd mood down to hormones, however after 13 years of teaching somehow Rachel was pretty immune to 11 year olds horrendous mood swings.
Soon they were back at the car, the first 5 minutes were pretty awkward as neither of them were talking. However Amy broke the silence by saying."mum I'm sorry for being so moody and snapping at you"
"It's alright Amy, I'm sorry if I made you feel embarrassed I didn't mean to" Rachel said
"I know"
"So have you done all of your homework ready for tomorrow" Rachel asked
"Yeah, except I got stuck on my maths homework, please would you be able to give me a hand" Amy asked
"What with maths? Somehow I don't think I'd be the best person to ask for that, why don't you see if dad or jake will help you" Rachel suggested
"I'll ask dad" amy decided "mum are you and dad okay, like your not going to break up again are you?" Amy asked
"No of course not, we're getting on better than ever"
"Oh but then why is he in the spare room"
"Because we thinks it's best if we take things slowly, and that means for the next couple of weeks separate rooms" Rachel explained
"But if you let him sleep in your bed it doesn't mean you have to take things any less slowly I mean you don't have to have sex with him" Amy said
"Amy" Rachel scolded "god if I'd have said that in front of my mother..."
"But I was only saying"
"Well there are some things best left in said aren't there huh ?" Rachel said after all the last thing she wanted to be doing was discussing her sex life with her 11 year old daughter
"Mum holly woke me up at 1 last night" Amy said
"Why what was wrong with her" Rachel asked concerned
"She came into my room crying, so I let her come into my bed and she told me she was upset because she'd had a fall out with Lucy, she was so upset about it"
"Why didn't you come and wake me or why didn't she tell me about it today" Rachel wondered feeling quite worried
"I don't think she wanted you to know, I don't know why, but don't say I said anything because I promised I wouldn't" Amy said
"Okay love well thanks for seeing to her" Rachel said as they swerved back onto the drive, Amy quickly went in and put her stuff away upstairs planning to use it later when everyone was asleep.
Rachel quickly went to say hi to Richard, Sophie and Jake who were in the kitchen, Sophie and Richard were making tea, or Richard was cooking and Sophie was eating anything she could get her hands on when Richard wasn't looking and jake was watching tv.
Once she'd said hello Rachel said "where's holly"
"She's up in her room, probably best if you go and see her actually she's been in a really funny mood, she keeps crying and stuff" Richard informed his wife
Rachel went upstairs and knocked on Holly's door, when she got no response she walked in anyway.
"Hols are you okay? Has anything happened? It's just dad said you haven't seemed yourself sweetheart" Rachel asked, going over to sit on Holly's bed, she put her daughter on her knee and put her arms around her, this was enough to make holly burst into tears.
"Shhh...hey it's okay love" Rachel soothed "what's up, what on earths happened?" She asked, however holly was feeling to upset to talk so Rachel just continued to soothe her for a bit longer, when she seemed to have calmed down a bit Rachel said "come on then tell me all about it"
"Lucy's being so horrible to me and I don't know why, and I hate it" holly sobbed
"Oh love why didn't you tell me sooner huh"
"I don't know I just want her to be my friend again"
"And she will be darling just give it some time, often people go in a funny mood with you and you have no idea why, used to happen to me loads when I was your age, but 9 out of 10 times it all blows over and if it doesn't then it's her loss isn't it"
"I suppose so"
"Now you've got lots of other friends so tomorrow at school just go round with them okay, Lucy will soon come back, just you see" Rachel said
"Okay thanks mum" holly said giving her mum another cuddle
"That's alright love now why don't you come downstairs I think dad was a bit worried about you"
Holly the followed her mum downstairs and reassured Richard she was okay, then the 6 of them ate their tea.
The evening passed quite quickly and before long it was time for bed.
Amy waited about ten minutes to make sure everyone was asleep, she then got out of bed, grabbed her boots bag and went into the bathroom, she started with the hair dye, she put the shower on, praying no one would hear it but luckily for her there was only her and jake on that floor so nobody did, she tried to follow the instructions as best she could but found them a little complicated after 20 minutes she rinsed it back off again however couldn't properly see the results as her hair was wet.
She then rubbed a great deal of fake tan all over her legs and applied the eyebrow tint, she was disappointed however when she saw no real results, Amy sighed heavily before going back to bed.
Soon the next morning came around Amy jumped out of bed and looked at herself in the mirror, at first she didn't recognise herself, the person staring back at her had dark black eyebrows, that looked like slugs, bright orange skin and worst of all green hair! Suddenly Amy realised it was herself and let out a small scream there was no way anyone could see her like this, not in a million years, she ran back into bed and pulled the cover over herself do no one could see her, she suddenly burst into tears feeling mortified.
Suddenly she heard someone come In and realised it would be her mum crap she thought to herself she hadn't even thought of How she was going to explain this to her mum, she would be grounded forever.
"Amy time to get up love" Rachel said
Amy decided to pretend to be asleep for a bit, that way hopefully her mum would leave her for 5 more minutes like she usually did and by then she would have thought up some plan.
"Come on aims let's be on time for once" Rachel sighed going over to Amy's bed
"I'm not getting up" Amy mumbled
"Come on don't be lazy up you get"
"No you don't get it I'm not coming out not ever"
"Why? If you don't get up yourself I will throw those covers off you and drag you out of bed" Rachel threatened when Amy didn't move she said "fine have it your way" and pulled the covers off her daughter, however she stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Amy "bloody hell" she whispered
"Mum what the hell am I supposed to do"Amy cried
"What in gods name have you done to yourself Amy"Rachel shouted
"Well I didn't think it would turn out like this did I, look I bought some stuff yesterday at boots"
"That's what was in that big bag of yours"
"I put it all on last night but it didn't do anything but then I woke up this morning and ..."
"Show me the bottles" Rachel said
"There in the bin" Amy sobbed
Rachel quickly got the stuff out of the bin and rolled her eyes dramatically "Amy you silly, silly girl did you not think to read the flaming labels"
"This says for dark skin only" Rachel said holding up the fake tan "this says use a drop of and then wipe off and by the looks of it you used the entire bloody bottle and left it on over night " Rachel said holding up the eyebrow tint " and this says it's for people who have dark blonde hair wanting to go a bit lighter, remind me what colour your hair is...sorry was young lady, have you any idea the kind of trouble your in and we've got flaming school in ..." Rachel began however she stopped and quickly grabbed her mobile out her pocket and rang school.
"Hi Bridget It's Rachel, would you be able to pass on the message that I can't make it in today and can you mark Amy off to, I think we've both caught something" Rachel lied after a relatively quick phone call she returned her attention to Amy
"I hope your happy Amy, the entire schools going to be disrupted because if you"
"Mum I'm sorry, I didn't know ..."
"Well of course you didn't somehow I don't think anyone in there right mind would want to look like that" Rachel yelled causing Amy to cry harder
Suddenly Richard appeared at the door along with jake, both caught site of Amy and burst into hysterical laughter.
"Oh look it's an umpa lumpa" jake said causing Richard to roar with laughter
"Amy...what have you ...you look..." Richard stammered however he couldn't get his sentence out for laughing so much
All of this was making Amy feel even worse than she already did she wished the floor would eat her up. Even Rachel was beginning to soften and feel a bit sorry for her.
"Willy wonkas factories that way aims" jake said laughing so hard tears were rolling down his cheeks and Richard wasn't much better.
"Hey that's enough you two" Rachel said calmly seeing how upset Amy was
"Oh just piss off all of you and leave me alone" Amy shouted, eventually they all left including Rachel.
Half an hour later Rachel went back up stairs to see Amy, she felt awful for being do harsh on her earlier, luckily everyone else had left for school so there was no one to take the mick, however Rachel was worried about how she was going to keep a straight faceehr. Amy looked the way she did.
Rachel went Into her daughters room and sat down in her bed any was laid face down on her pillow.
"Amy it's just me now love, you can sit up" Rachel said stroking her daughter back
Reluctantly Amy sat up in bed, Rachel gulped trying desperately hard to stop herself from laughing.
"Well I suppose that's one way to get a day off school Amy" Rachel joked however Amy still felt pretty awful so remained silent "listen I've asked for Ali to come round, you know my friend whose the hairdresser and she knows this beautician who she said can come round to, they'll have you back to normal in no time love" Rachel said gently, Amy sighed and then collapsed onto her mum, Rachel put her arm round her supportively.
"I just wanted to look older mum" Amy sighed
"Well looking like that I don't think anyone would be able to tell how old you are my love" Rachel joked and Amy let out a little laugh
"I'm sorry for shouting at you earlier it's just I was shocked when I saw ..."
"That your daughter had turned into a green haired black eye brow wotsit over night"
"You could put it like that yes" Rachel laughed "but Amy why on earth did you feel the need to try it out anyway, surely you must have known your evil witch of a mother would have gone pretty crazy even if it had worked out well"
"I know but I was so desperate to get a new look" Amy explained
"My god you don't do things by halves do you aim" Rachel sighed "anyway you don't need a new look your beautiful the way you are everyone says so"
"I suppose I don't even know why I did it, I wish I hadn't"
" what am I going to do with you huh? I honestly can't imagine you being anything other than the crazy, troublesome kid you are though that causes me more flaming stress than the entire school put together"
"I'm going to be good from now on" Amy promised
"Hmm let's see how long that lasts"
"I bet you a fiver I can stay out of trouble for an entire week"
"You're on missus" Rachel said laughing
Ali came round at about 11 as did sam the beautician it took quite a while but eventually Amy was back to normal, she was so relieved when she looked in the mirror and saw her old self back, both Rachel and Amy then said goodbye to the two of them.
"Right so it's 12:30 so we'll make it back in time for afternoon registration if we hurry up."
"Please can I have the rest of the day off" Amy begged
Rachel rolled her eyes and then said "I suppose it Is friday and it would look suspicious if we both miraculously recovered from that horrible illness, look why don't we go shopping, but on one condition" Rachel said
"What?" Amy asked
"You don't go out of my site, today's taught me what happens when I do" Rachel said causing Amy to laugh, the pair of them quickly got there stuff together and drive into town. They were all going out for a meal later so they both wanted to get a new outfit for that.
"Right what do you need" Rachel asked
"Literally everything" Amy replied
"Now how did I know those words were going to come out of your mouth, right where should we start"
"River island, then new look, then topshop, then bank, then la senza"
"Why the hell do you want to go to la senza Amy"
"Because I need a new bra and I saw this really nice leopard print one the other day in there when I went with Alicia and Kate"
"Amy your 11 years old" Rachel sighed
"So"
"So there's no way I'm going to buy you a flaming leopard print bra, if you do need one we'll get one from new look or somewhere honestly when I was your age it was still all bog standard m&s woolly vests"
"Are you sure that wasn't just you thinking you looked hot or something mum" Amy laughed
"Oh shut up you cheeky girl it was everyone in my year"
"I'm sure you all looked attractive then" Amy said sarcastically
"Well I wouldn't have thought at 11 there was anyone who would see it that would be considering you attractive or not unless of course you're hiding something from me young lady" Rachel retaliated causing Amy to roll her eyes in as similar fashion to Rachel had done earlier "anyway when did you go shopping with Kate and Alicia"
"Last weekend"
"Well you've just landed yourself in it young lady because you told me you were going with Melissa and Amy L"
"Oh yeah"
"Why lie to me"
"Because you wouldn't have let me go if I'd have told you I was going with them you don't like them"
"Don't put words into my mouth Amy, I never said I didn't like them, I just think they can both play the madam sometimes"
After 2 hours of shopping the two of them had bought loads, and were really pleased.
Once they got home Amy put the tv on and they curled up on the sofa together, it was nice for Amy to have her mum all to herself normally everyone else wanted Rachel's attention as well or she was pre occupied with work. The time flew by and before long everyone was home from school.
"Hi mum" holly said coming to say hello to her mum and Amy
"Hello sweetheart how was school" Rachel asked
"It was really good mum I made up with Lucy" holly informed her mum
"That's great news darling I knew you would, now I think you and Sophie should go in the bath now, remember we're going to that meal tonight and we won't get back till about 9:30 so the two of you will be shattered and will want to get straight to bed" Rachel said
"Okay mum"
Rachel then went upstairs and started running the bath after a few minutes she called the two of them up, she decided to put the two little girls in together, the bath was huge and both girls were still young so it didn't really mattering it would save time. She quickly got the two of them washed and then got them both out and put a big white fluffy towel round them both.
"Rachel will you dry my hair for me, I hate it when it's all wet" Sophie said
"Yeah course I will love, come though to my room" Rachel said
By 6 both girls were ready, the two of them looked really pretty and still quite cute Rachel though to herself, she then had a shower herself and got out a nice floaty blue dress she'd bought earlier for herself.
Soon the 6 of them were ready to go, unfortunately the drive to the restaurant was extremely long one and both Rachel and Richard did worry a bit when they saw how posh it was.
It didn't take them long to spot Richards brother josh with all his family and Rachel's sister with Jess and Philip
Amy quickly got talking to Jess and Evie both were her age and they had a lot of common with one another so the three of them had always got on to very well. Holly and Sophie were talking to Zoe who was 7 she was really nice and they made sure Sophie didn't feel left out, jake and Harry got on ok as well and they tried to include Philip but found him hard to talk to.
It was really nice for them all to be together for once, although they'd had a few disputes over the years as every family does generally they got on ok.
Time went really quickly all the adults were rather drunk so decided no one should drive home, they would call a taxi and then come and collect the car in the morning it would of course be a bit of a faff but it was better than getting pulled over by a police officer.
They all said there goodbyes and went outside and the six of them got in the 7 seated taxi, Amy and jake got in the back and Sophie and holly got in the middle with Rachel while Richard sat in the front with the taxi driver who seemed really nice. After about 5 minutes Rachel felt someone tapping her on her left shoulder she saw it was holly "what is it holly" she asked
"I really need a wee" holly whispered
Rachel sighed heavily and said "well there's nothing we can do about it now is there, I did tell you not to drink so much, why on earth didn't you say you needed to go to the toilet when we were in there"
"I didn't want to say in front of everyone, it would be embarrassing, what am I going to do its ages till we get home" holly said worried
"Okay don't panic, just cross your legs and think about something else" Rachel suggested not really knowing what else to say
Holly tried to do as her mum told her to but was finding it quite hard especially seen as the drive back was quite bumpy "mum I'm desperate I need to go now" holly said urgently
"We're nearly back now love just hang on" Rachel said however she could see they still had about another 15 minutes to go she prayed holly would be able to wait that long, she knew how mortified holly would be if something happened in the taxi.
After what seemed like an eternity the car served onto the drive, holly was basically in tears as she was certain she was going to embarrass herself in front of everyone, she quickly ran out that taxi and waited at the front door with her legs crossed, jumping from side to side . Richard paid the taxi driver and left him quite a big tip before unlocking the door, holly raced upstairs straight away and darted for the bathroom however she was so desperate after having so much to drink and the zip on the back of her trousers was really stiff she tried hard to get It undone but it was almost impossible! she knew she wouldn't be able to wait any longer suddenly she felt her knickers and trousers turn wet and a puddle spreading on the floor beneath her feet she felt so ashamed of herself, and burst into tears wishing she hadn't been such a baby, she grabbed some tissues and tried to clean up as best she could using toilet roll and the disinfectant stuff she'd seen her mum use before when she was really little and used to have accidents.
"Did you have a good night Rach" Richard asked
"Yeah it was lovely did you"
"Yeah it's nice to see everyone, what was up with holly" he asked
"Oh she was absolutely dying for the loo bless her"
"Joys of having little kids eh" Richard laughed
"Definitely, anyways I'll go and put Sophie and holly to bed" Rachel said going upstairs, however when's he was just half way up she was greeted by Sophie."Rachel I'm tired and I want to go to the toilet but Holly's been in there ages and she won't let me in" Sophie whined
"Okay you go and use my bathroom and then hop into bed I'll come and tuck you in, in a minute love" Rachel said, she then grabbed holly some pyjamas and knocked on the bathroom door "hols it's mum, let me in darling" Rachel said gently, holly twisted the lock and let Rachel in.
"I'm sorry mum I did try and hold on" holly mumbled sounding frightened
"Come on you let's get those wet things off, look I've got some dry pyjamas for you to change into" Rachel said taking Holly's top and trousers off for her and putting her into her favourite pyjamas
"Aren't you mad" holly asked
"nope just lesson learnt don't have too much to drink in future love" Rachel said "Now stop worrying it's fine okay just forget it ever happened we'll say no more about it" Rachel soothed she then took hold of Holly's hand and led her downstairs to where Richard was sat in the kitchen "Rich look after holly , get her some nice hot chocolate while I go and see to Sophie, hols 5 minutes then bedtime darling" Rachel said
When Rachel went upstairs she realised Sophie was already fast asleep so decided not to wake her, she just kissed her gently on the forehead and pulled the covers up to her chin.
When she went downstairs she saw holly and Richard on the sofa, holly was in Richards arms, she stopped for a moment and looked at the two of them after all it was a pretty heartwarming site.
"Holly time for bed now my love, say goodnight to daddy" Rachel said holly gave her dad a goodnight kiss and then followed Rachel upstairs. Rachel quickly tucked holly in and stayed with her for 5 minuted till she fell asleep, she still often did this when holly was feeling a little upset.
Soon Rachel decided to go to bed herself it didn't take her long for her to fall asleep.
It was 1 in the morning and Rachel woke up to crying coming from next to her bed
"Sophie what's up love" Rachel asked when she saw it was Sophie
"I feel sick, my head hurts and I'm really hot" Sophie sniffled
"Oh dear that doesn't sound very good does, come downstairs let's get you some medicine" Rachel said, she then scooped her up in her arms and carried her downstairs.
When Sophie was in the light Rachel could see how pale she looked and how sweaty she seemed, she began to get a bit worried, she gave her some medicine before sitting Sophie down on her knee in the back room, she brought a sick bowl with her just in case.
After 2 minutes Sophie clutched her stomach, Rachel held the bowl up for her and rubbed her bag, while Sophie was sick, tears were rushing down her face, when she'd finished being sick Rachel laid her down on the sofa while she disposed of the sick bowl she came back to see Sophie in floods of tears
"Oh you poor thing, there's nothing worse than feeling poorly is there huh" Rachel said while Sophie continued to cry
"I wonder what's caused all this have you been feeling funny all day at school, or did it start after the restaurant" Rachel asked wondering if this was something Sophie had eaten.
"I've been feeling funny all day" Sophie said
"Sweetie why didn't you say" Rachel sighed
"Because I felt better for a bit"
"Well fingers crossed tomorrow you'll be back to your usual self but for now, get them pyjamas off I want you to be as cool as possible, I'll get you a vest and some knickers to wear out the waning basket and hopefully that medicine will get to work soon and then why don't you come and jump into bed with me huh, my rooms a little cooler than yours and my quilt is less thick." Rachel said before quickly grabbing the stuff out the washing basket, Sophie needed the loo so she got changed in there as well and then handed Rachel her pyjamas.
The two of them crept back upstairs and into bed luckily they didn't wake anybody and before long the two of them were asleep.
Sophie woke up at 9 Rachel was just tidying her dressing table up when she saw Sophie's eyes open
"Good morning sleepy head how are you feeling"
"I feel sick" Sophie said before dashing to the bathroom "your really not right are you love, listen I'll run you a nice bath that might help" Rachel said
10 minutes later Rachel called Sophie through, Sophie quickly took off her vest only then did Rachel realise she had spots all over her body "right that looks like chicken pox to me, have you ever had it before love"
"No my mum told me I'd never had ..." Sophie begs however she didn't finding her sentence she always found it so hard to even mention her mum
"Okay well I'm sure that's what it is darling" Rachel said gently "now i know from experience it's pretty unpleasant -I had it when I was about your age,so did Amy and jake and holly had it last year but it's nothing to serious just means lots if rest, medicine and time off school" Rachel explained
"So I'll be ok" Sophie asked sounding scared
"Yeah you'll be fine love but like I said it really isn't pleasant I know"
After her bath Rachel put Sophie back in her bed and let her have a rest, she then went downstairs and told Richard about it who also seemed quite worried. Rachel and Richard were in the middle of a conversation when jake came In
"Hiya love you sleep alright" Rachel asked
"Yeah fine, dad can I go out later" jake asked knowing his dad would be mote likely to say yes than Rachel or would ask him less questions about where he was going
"Yeah that's fine" Richard replied absentmindedly
Jake was about to leave when Rachel stopped him "erm wait a minute where are you going"
"The park"
"No your not after all that drug stuff that was going on there just last week" Rachel said
"Please mum everyone else goes you can't expect me to be the only one" jake said
Rachel was about to protest further when. Richard said "jakes a sensible lad Rach he knows not to get involved in anything daft just let him go"
"Fine but you get home for no later than 8 jake do you hear" Rachel said
"Yes ma'am" jake sighed
"Oi and less of the cheek" Rachel said as jake was leaving
The day seemed to pass quite quickly,the girls kept themselves occupied and Sophie spent most of the day in bed and Rachel kept checking up on her.
They all had tea at around 5 and jake went out after that.
They all had a flexing Saturday evening at about 7:30 Rachel went to see to Sophie after she'd just been sick again, she spent ages trying to soothe her and make her feel more comfortable but nothing was really working,her temperature had gone down so Rachel got her a bit water bottle to hold against her stomach.
After about an hour she eventually did settle and went to sleep, Richard had just gone out to go for his usual Saturday night game if footy with his mates so it was just Rachel in the house, with the kids suddenly she caught sight of the time it was 8:45 which meant jake was really late she immediately began to get very worried, she was about to go out and look for him when she heard a knock at he door to her astonishment she saw jake with a. Police officer
"Excuse me this young man tells me he lives here is that correct" he asked
"Yeah it is, what's going on" Rachel said looking daggers at jake
"Him and a big group of other bits were caught drinking in the park I'm not sure your aware but this is a criminal offence and as such we are giving him a verbal warning and issuing him with a fine of £50"
"He's been doing what" Rachel said grabbing her bag and handing the officer the relevant amount if money
"I dare say he wasn't the ring leader in fact he looked pretty uncomfortable there but we had to follow procedure none the less"
"Well thanks for bringing him home" Rachel said she quickly said goodbye before turning her attention to her son "inside right now" she said extremely strictly "do you actually have any idea the amount of trouble your in jake"
"I'm sorry mum I didn't mean to ..."
"What do you mean you didn't mean to what did they do hold you down and ram it down your throat somehow I don't think so"
"Everyone else was doing it I just wanted to be the same as them"
"What and that makes it okay does it, I'm so angry with you jake, you know I've brought you up better than this, I thought you were a good sensible lad but clearly not" Rachel shouted
"Mum look .. I'm sorry...I'm sorry." Jake stammered
