Arabesque

Later that afternoon, Emma Comes around. Regina opens the door slightly, just enough for Emma to see her face. Emma's face contorts in anger. "Shit!" she says.

Regina sighs and moves outside to keep Emma from coming inside. "I'm Fine," Regina insists just as Henry appears behind her. "This is really not a good time, Emma. I'll see you later. I promise I am okay."

"Regina," Emma says watching her girlfriend reopen her door to go back inside.

"I love you, see you later," Regina said and shut the door. Regina tightly closed her eyes. She couldn't believe she said that and hoped she hadn't made a mistake.

She opened her eyes and saw her father watching her. She wasn't in the mood to deal with his preconception of Emma. So she moves quickly towards the stairs and into her room.

Regina paced her room. Has she spoken too soon? The only person She could talk to about this was Ruby, so she picked up her phone and dialed her number. She didn't wait for Ruby to say anything. " Ruby I may have messed up,"

" I don't think anything you do would ever cool things with you and Emma," Ruby said on the other line. Regina could hear the sound of the diner at the other end. " the two of you are just too hot and cute."

"Are you working right now?"

"Yeah, and watching your girlfriend try to do her homework with a goofy look on her face." There was a pause the other end; then Ruby came back with harried voice. "Regina, hang up I'm going to video chat you."

"O-Okay," she did what she was asked and waited for the video chat chime.

When the picture came up on her phone, she could see the diner was a little emptier seeing as how the dinner rush had only just begun. She can see Emma sitting at a booth Books open in front of her and Lily approach her.

"So you're all alone today?" Lily asked and sat across from Emma at the booth.

Emma looks up at Lily for a long moment. What Regina had told her before she left her father had mellowed her anger a bit. So she sat and thought about what she would say to the girl that had attacked her girlfriend. "Looks like it."

"Nice to see you're not attached at the hip." Lily continued.

"You got something to say to me?" am I asked folding her arms over her chest.

"No."

"Well, something must be on your mind, since you got all up in Regina's face And starting all of this drama," Emma said leaning forward in her seat. "What are you trying to prove Lily?"

"Me?" Lily says indignantly. " You're the one who's trying to prove something. I mean what is so special about her? She's stuck-up. Never thought you'd go for that rich girl."

"So why do you care that she stuck up? What's it to you?"

Reginabsearched in her drawers for her headphones so that she could better hear the conversation. " Can you get closer?" Regina hissed.

"I'll try," Ruby said, and visual got a little bit closer.

"You left me for a boy Lily. A boy!" Emma said. " I didn't even lose my mind. And I could have, Lily."

"That was different," Lily countered.

"How?" Emma, I asked. "Alright you cheated, and I didn't."

Lily stood up and rounded on Emma angrily." But it's like you're saying that just being a normal person isn't enough for you. You couldn't just be with somebody who was not her. She's rich in I'm just… some poor orphan."

"You're ridiculous!"

"Ridiculous?" Lily said incredulously. "Emma you made me promises. Then you went and slept with Bae, and had your ridiculous baby. where are my promises?"

"You forfeited them the moment you open your legs for that asshole!" Emma retorts standing up face off with her. "I loved you. I thought I was going someplace good with you. You're the one that called me off, but you are not trying to remember that. Now you're mad, why because she's rich and you're not? Because she can give me things that you can never give me? Right, all of her love and affection and acceptance for me and my ridiculous baby."

Regina's Eyes teared up listening to Emma, she hadn't said The L Word, but she knew that Emma understood what she had meant to say to her on her front steps. Maybe she hadn't made a mistake.

On the screen, Emma was still talking. "This between Regina and me has no business setting you off. She and I have nothing to do with you and what you think I am doing with her. So keep all of your insecurities to yourself."

Lily folds her arms across her chest and looks at Emma defiantly. "One day you'll see. While you're sitting in your little glass house; you're going to want to throw some stones, and it's going to shatter to pieces, and then you are going to be all alone." then she turned and left the diner.

Suddenly Regina couldn't see anymore. Ruby had placed the phone in her pocket, and she could hear the tall brunette approach her girlfriend. "Shit Em!"

"No Ruby, don't start with me."

" Hey, she had it coming."

"She told me she loves me, Ruby," Emma said it quietly to her friend.

"Regina?" Regina guesses that Emma may have just nodded because there was no sound from the blonde. "And?"

"She closed the door on me. She didn't even let me really see her today."

"Maybe she didn't want you to see her beat up face."

"She let me see," and I replied.

"So she's not hiding?"

"I think I have a problem with the mayor now."

Regina hung up the video chat now she didn't need to hear anymore. She knew and felt the same way and felt tensions dissipate a bit. There was a knock on the door, and she looked up to see her father peeking inside. " Can I come in?" He asked.

"It's your house."

"It's our house," Henry said with a sigh. " you were right. It's just that- I need some time to get used to the fact you are in fact an adult. And I'm sorry I left you behind. Please let me make it up to you."

" what are you saying?" Regina asked.

"Stop interfering in your love life. I will not have your sexuality be a condition of my love for you. I accept you as you are."

"Daddy…" Regina said launching herself forward and holding her daddy close.

Henry held onto his daughter as he hadn't done in years. " I have missed this so much."

"I've missed this too."

Next Saturday morning, Regina went to breakfast at Granny's she wore sunglasses to cover the Shiner that Lily had given her. She was careful to keep her face hidden; she didn't want nosey prying eyes to think that she just let anyone hit her.

She spotted Ruby cleaning off a booth and headed in that direction. "Hey Ruby," She said sitting at the table.

"Hey!" Ruby said and smiled. "Can I get you anything?"

Regina shakes her head "I just need to talk."

Ruby sighs, " well I can't right now Regina."

"Come on Ruby; the breakfast rush is over." Regina insisted.

"What, Regina, did your daddy flip out about you getting in a fight?" Ruby says a little annoyed. " I bet he thinks it's all Emma's fault."

"No, I explained about Lily." Regina countered.

"Sure, put it all on her."Ruby retorted.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Regina asked. "She was the one that started in the first place."

Ruby flashes Regina a look and goes back to wiping down the next table. "Maybe she shouldn't have started the fight, but she is justified in feeling the way she does."

"Seriously?" Regina says incredulously. "Why can't I belong with Emma?"

"Listen, what I think doesn't matter," Ruby said. "But you and Emma act like Emma's history in the system doesn't matter."

"What system? We like each other. What's the big deal?" Regina asks exasperatedly.

"Emma's parents had her when they were really young. She lived the first six years of her life in the foster system. Right along with Lily. So yeah… Emma is going to do something with her life. And she has a shiny new rich penny with her."

"Ruby…" Regina is left breathless. "I thought we were friends. I guess I was wrong." with that, she stood and left the diner.
