The sky was clear, a perfect day to fly back to Republic City. As a spirit floated above Tenzin's head, a small smile formed on his face. Korra was right, something great was coming toward them; it was a new day.
Bumi was loading up some snacks he just had to take for the ride home (Lychee juice and Fire Flakes), with Bum-Ju on his shoulder, while Kya and Jinora hugged Katara goodbye (Kya decided to tag along and help with any damage Vaatu and Unalaq had made).
"I'm all ready to go, Tenzin," Korra said.
"What about your friends, are they ready?"
"..No, they're heading back on Varick's boat," Korra replied with a frown. "We discussed it, and it seemed to be the most appropriate choice."
"Then we're ready to go?" Shouted Bumi, who was up front on Oogie. "I'm driving!"
"No, you're not," Tenzin retorted, running quickly toward his brother so he didn't fly off.
After a long argument, that Katara had to end, a hug and kiss for Katara, and a last-minute bathroom break, they were off. It was weird flying with spiritual creatures around them. Spirits would fly joyfully beside Oogie, occasionally landing on him. The whole view was breathtaking.
"Well, look at that beautiful creature," Kya breathed as an animal flew around Oogie. The creature had white shiny fur and large wings.
"That's a tiger bird," Jinorra announced, looking at the creature that was now flying beside Oogie. "They've been extinct for centuries... They're of Earth Kingdom origin, which is weird because they fly. But they served as guardians for the Earth Nation royals. They protected them from any harm that came near them. The last one ever reported, though, was in the Northern Air Temple."
"If they came from the Earth Nation, why would the last one ever seen be in the Northern Air Temple?" Korra asked as they continued to watch it soar high in the sky.
"The King of Ba Sing Se was secretly flying to the Air Temple every night," Jinnora explained. "He was meeting his secret lover, an Airbender named Anila. They had to keep their love a secret because the king, otherwise known as Kun the Great, had been set to marry by the end of winter. The king didn't love his future wife, but in order to stay king he had to marry and create an heir."
"Why didn't he just leave and go start a new life with Anila?" Korra asked. "Anila was obviously the one he wanted."
"He wanted to, but Anila wouldn't allow it," Jinorra told her. "She told him he had duties to his kingdom and he could no longer fly up to the Northern Air Temple."
"Duties," Laughed Bumi.
"Then if she broke it off with him, why was it last seen in the Air Temple," Kya asked her niece.
"The day after Anila broke off their relationship, he vowed never to love anyone but her again, thus killing himself by brutally ripping out his own heart." Jinorra announced sadly. "Of course Anila didn't know this, she thought he was back in his kingdom ruling his great land. All she knew was Kun's tiger bird flew up to see her every night after his death, which she mistakenly thought the animal was a gift from him that told her to never forget their love. The tiger bird stayed with her until her death fifty years later. Not another tiger bird has been seen since."
"This is... I feel kind of feel like I'm viewing a historic moment," Bumi said as they watched the animal fly away, disappearing in the clouds.
"And legend says, even before Kun and Anila's story, the tiger birds were known to be very loyal creatures to their masters. And since Anila was so close to the tiger bird's master, Kun, she was the successor of being the animal's master."
"What an amazing story," Korra spoke. "His love lived on through the tiger bird."
They flew for another hour until they landed by the bay of Republic City. They were greeted by a crowd of citizens all happy to see the Avatar.
"Thank you, Avatar!"
"You were amazing, Avatar!"
"Very impressive!"
"Thanks, it's not all that impressive," Korra told them. "I'd like to apologize, I caused the danger in the first place. And I know the dark spirit practically destroyed the City but it is my vow to you that I will help you rebuild it." The crowd roared with gratefulness. "And it's a new day, we're now living with spirits around us.."
"We know that," shouted a man angrily, who was being lifted up off the ground by a spirit shaped like a cloud.
"You'll have to learn to live with the spirits," Korra announced with a frown. "If we don't the-"
"World will be unbalanced," mocked the man, now high in the air.
"Whatever your decision is, Avatar Korra, we'll support you," said someone else from the crowd.
"Good, then let's work together and clean the City," Korra said, clapping her hands together.
A quick cheer from the crowd, a boo coming from above them, and a round of applause, the crowd faded and went off to clean the city.
"We should probably head to Air Temple Island," Tenzin announced, helping Kya back up on Oogie, "we don't want to keep Pema and the children waiting. They must be worried sick about us."
He got on Oogie and was about to fly off...
"Tenzin," said a familiar voice. He turned to see Lin looking up at him. "Come down here, I would like a word."
"Yes, Lin, what is it?" He spoke, sliding off Oogie.
"That man you had me track down... What was his name? Bedell Misham? How did that go?" She eyed him suspiciously.
"..Oh.. He was-"
"Not very pleasant, I know," she told him with a nod.
"You know?"
"Yes," she said with a small smile, "I went to visit him a few years ago myself. He was no help at all."
"So you know he-"
"Knew our son?"
"Yes.." Tenzin breathed in amazement. "But how?"
"I read the book too," Lin admitted. "I thought it was strange that my mother up and decided to leave Republic City so I began investigating. For years, I got nothing... but about three years ago I came across this newly published book about the White Lotus coming to his colony, the same colony our mothers came and visited at the same time the White Lotus' did. And then my mother decides to live there?"
"I suppose it all seemed a little strange," said Tenzin, his eyes sparkled with love. "But doesn't it amaze you that so many people were protecting him from danger... Only to die in the end."
"How do we know he's dead?" Lin asked. "How do we know someone didn't help him? How do we know there isn't another secret that we don't know about?"
"Lin, you don't mean to suggest that..."
"I don't know, both times we thought he was dead... All I'm saying is we never saw a grave or a dead body," Lin spoke softly, looking down at the ground, not making eye contact with Tenzin. "I don't know what to think anymore."
"He was my child too, Lin," Tenzin told her warmly, putting a hand on her shoulder. "I'd like to believe that... but where would he have gone if he actually survived the attack?"
"I don't know," she said, removing his hand from her shoulder.
"No one even knows who those men are," Tenzin said.
"Every report I have from them, it's always the same thing," sighed Lin. "They appear from nowhere and when they're done destroying the place, they disappear. The last one was years ago, but I know they're still out there!"
"Someday those awful men will be destroyed by some great power," Tenzin reassured. "And our son, and many others, will have justice."
"I'm just tired of not knowing the truth," Lin said quietly. "I've been lied to too many times, Tenzin."
"We'll search until we find the truth, Lin. We'll search until we find him, alive or dead," he promised. "We'll learn the truth..."
"Chief, can you help us get this man down," asked one of her officers, jumping up to try to grab him. With a sigh, she looked at the man who was being carried by a cloud spirit and took her metal springs out of her uniform, wrapped the metal springs around the man, and dropped him back on the ground.
"..Thank you.." The man spoke weakly.
"Alright," she agreed, still frowning. "I have work to do, go be with your family."
"I promise you, Lin," he spoke, airbending himself back on Oogie, "we will find him. Oogie, yip yip," he commanded and they were off. "If it's the last thing I do, Lin!"
