The next day couldn't come with more of a surprise even if it wanted to. Being woken by banging and shouting isn't exactly my way of being greeted by the morning sun.

Sitting straight up in my bed, with eyes open and alert, saw L rush in with a mask and black cloak. "L, what's happening?" I asked, as he shut the curtains by my bed.

There is a riot going on, we must leave". I took the mask he was handing out to me and I slipped it on. "Put this on, it will help keep you safe from people if they find out who we are"

L was speaking so fast that it sounded like a blur. I saw as L pulled out a phone from his pocket and stuffed it back in. "Watari is ready".

He took my hand and dragged me out my room and over to the door. He let go of my hand to pick up a gun that was left on the door-side table. "Stay close to me" He said, and stay close I will.

I opened the door to see that the coast was clear. Walking out into an empty hall has never felt so, heavy and dead. We stopped by a window and looked down over the city.

People were everywhere, trying to escape or helping to make this riot worse. It was a scene right out of the movies. "Let's get to Watari, Fast" L said, and with that the last thing being said till we were down on ground level.

People again were nowhere to be seen. L walked first with me right on his step. Watari was in sight, and that was all that was going through my mind.

Four car lengths away from our car and a guy walks out from around a pillar to aim his gun at L. "Well, aren't you a sight for good eyes, and your with a hot chick? How'd the hell did that happen?" The guy said to L and took a step toward us.

"Stay be hind me" L whispered. I did as he said and stayed behind him. I didn't know what L was going to do, neither did I know what this man was going to do. All I know is that L and that man both have a gun.

"This is what is going to happen" The guy said, "Your going to give her to me and you'll live to see the next five minutes". He said, "What you want to happen and what is going to happen are different" L said.

The next thing I hear is a gun cock and it was from L, is was from that guy who stopped us. "Give her or you die, no more games!" He yelled. "Okay" I said and stepped out from behind L.

I was already a few feet in front of L when I turned to look at his face. It was a mix between anger, frustration and worry. "That's a girl", the guy said. I was in reach of the man when he pointed his gun at me.

It was aimed at my chest, but that was okay, for the next thing I did was roundhouse kick the gun out of his grasp and spin with the momentum I had and kick him the face with the heel of my other foot.

He fell to the ground with a thud. Out cold. I felt a hand on my arm and was pushed to my right. I knew it was L from the size of his hand and fingers. "Get in the car", he hissed.

The door was opened then slammed and Watari sped of into the streets. Crazy people were running around scream and chanting Kira. After a few swerves and sudden stops, we were in the clear.

We all had a chance to relax. I looked to my right and saw L, looking at me with a face that I don't know how to read. "Don't you ever put yourself in harm's way again, am I understood Layla?" I have never seen L so upset before.

"L, it was either you get hurt trying to protect me or me do what I did. The world needs you, the world needs L. It doesn't need me, it doesn't even know I exist. In the end, you are more important than me. You of all people should know that". I told him.

I didn't mean to sound upset, but I was just merely hurt by what he said and thought. He didn't say anything, just turned away from me and looked out the window.

The city was getting smaller by the second as was the road we were driving on. "L, where are we going?" I asked in a small voice, not wanting to upset him anymore than he already was.

"A small house on the outskirts of town". Was the only thing he said. It felt lonely being in a car with two people who weren't talking to you. Lonely, sad, quiet.

L was right, just how he always is. The house that he bought was small. No bigger then the size of a garage. "L", Was all Watari said to alert the geniuses that we have arrived.

L got out of the car with the swift and fast movement of a hawk and made a bee line for the door of the house. "Don't take what he said to heart Layla, you're the closest thing he has to family, he thinks as you as a friend and he would even hurt himself to keep what he has safe" Watari said to me before he got out of the car and walked to the house just as L had done.

I have went from feeling week to strong, hurt, alone to feeling three inches tall. All in a matter of minutes. I opened my door and walked to the house. Pushing the door open sense Watari didn't both to shut it walked in and saw that the house was set up just like a house.

Who knew that L would actually keep something the same without changing it. I roamed the house to familiar rise myself with its layout when I ran into L holding a bowl of ice cream in his hand.

I stood to the side to allow him to move past me, then I just followed him to wherever he was going. We walked into a room that was already set up for work. How long has he be waiting for something like this to happen?

The TV flipped on and the news was covering the riot that was still raging on. "Watari bring in another TV" L said, and with in a few minutes, Watari came walking in pushing a TV.

He turned it on and just as he flipped it to Kira News, a gothic K appeared on the TV screen.

"I am Kira. People of Japan, what you are doing is against the law and is going against what I stand for and for what I want to create. You all have one hour to stop what you are doing or I will begin my judgment. Remember...One hour"

And the K disappeared and the news was back playing again. I looked at the other TV and what ya know. The people were stopping what they were doing and was walking rather fast to get somewhere other than the streets.

"Well would you look at that. Kira actually did something good. Hell really did freeze over has it not L?", I asked L, but he didn't say anything. What I said wasn't meant for a replay, but it wouldn't have hurt to get one none the less.

I got up and walked around the house, or exploring what was left for me to explore that is. Not much was left say for another bedroom and bathroom.

It was a good little house, can't say that I've lived in worse 'cause I have, but I have definitely lived in better. I know the reason for why L picked this house.

It was out-of-the-way, little tacky and no one would think to look for us here. I walked in the room that I have assumed would be mine.

I walked over to the curtains and yanked them back and saw a clear yard, then a tree line that led to the forest. I stepped back till the back of my knees hit the bed, then I sat down on the soft mattress and just stared out the window.

What I was looking for, I have not the slightest clue. Just staring out into something that wasn't empty, but looking at it and threw it as if it was. How long I've sat there? I have no idea.

Minutes? Hours? Time ticked by as I waited for a sign, any sign that would make sense to me, a sign that would tell me what I was supposed to do next.

"Miss Layla, L would like to speak with you", Watari said from the door way. "Speak is to sound as hearing is to nagging", I looked at him and saw a smile nag at his lips.

"What he has to say might be 'nagging' but it is L", Watari will be Watari, always being on L's side, no matter what it is. I stood and walked to where I have last saw L, only to find him sitting right where he was when I left.

"Yes, L?", I asked and stood in the door way. "I have something for you to do". My ears perked up at the sound of this. "I need you to get close to Light, see what you can get me to use. That is all". Did L, really give me something like that to do, then to dismiss me like I was nothing?

"Yes, L", I said nothing more. Just turned on the spot and walked away. "Do get started as soon as you can", He said before I was to far away to hear him.

I walked from his room to the kitchen and found Watari, making something sweet for L. "Watari, can a borrow your car?", I asked him as I stood looking at him with a blank face as so he can't read anything or get anything from it.

"Of course my Dear, the keys are in it, do be careful, Miss Layla", He said, and went back to L's Sweet's. I walked out the house and got in his car.

Watari's car was a BMW, a lot less obvious than any of L's cars. I got into the driver's seat and saw my bag still in the back seat where I left it after we arrived.

I drove down the street and started thinking of places that Light would be at. The mall? No. The Arcade? No. I was driving by To-Oh when I saw a familiar head of hair.

I slowed down the car as I was approaching a stop sign. Just a few seconds passed by when Light walked in front of the car. He looked in the car and saw me looking at him with a look that said are you going to move.

He walked around to the passenger side and bent down and smiled. I rolled the window down and looked at him. "Nice car, Layla-chan", Light said, "Thanks Light-Kun. Where you headed?" I asked him.

"I'm heading home. You?", He asked me. "No where. Need a lift? I don't mind", I told him. He smiled and nodded his head. I unlocked the door and he opened it and climbed in. "Buckle up", I told him.

He did as I asked and sat his bag on the floor. "Just tell me where you live", I said to him. I already knew where he lived, but it would be weird if I just took him home without me asking him for the directions first, that or a stoker.

And I was not the later. We were quiet, nothing said, other than him telling me where to turn, and how far up to turn. It was easy to get to where he lived.

"Thanks for the ride. Will I see you tomorrow at To-Oh exams?", He asked with a smile. "Your welcome and yes you will", I told him with the same kind of smile as he just shown me.

He opened the door and climbed out then grabbed his bag. "See ya later, Layla-chan", He said, before he could shut the door, I did what I never thought that I would do.

"Light, after To-Oh, would you like to get a smoothie or something?", I asked him. "Yeah, we'll meet after wards and go get one", He said with a smile, then shut the door.

I watched as he entered his house. Then pulled away and out of this neighborhood.

"Well... That was awkward to say the least". I said to myself. I drove around not really paying any sort of mind to where I was going or heading, just driving for the drive.

How long I was gone and away from L was beyond me, Yes there is a working clock in the car, and yes, I can tell time. But for right now, I wasn't too sure that I wanted to know how to tell time.

The sun was going down in the sky, not dark time but just evening. Sky colors looking marvelous. Gold's, reds, oranges, pinks. All beautiful colors and not a cloud in sight to mess up the painting that was laid out in front of my eyes.

I came across a street that I knew would take me to that house. I turned down it and drove till I met the street that would take me to the house. I drove and drove, till I came to that dirt road.

Turned down it and park in the same spot where Watari had it parked. I turned off the car and just sat there. Not really wanting to go in, but knew that sooner or later that I would have to go in there, and face L.

I got out of the car and walked into the house. Everything was quiet till I came to the door of L's room. "Nicely down Layla, but next time, do tell someone where your going. I would hate to waste law enforcement to find you".

That stung a little. "Yes, L. I would hate for you to waste anything for my sake", I saw him stop typing and start to turn around, but just as fast as I had appeared, I was gone and in my room, sitting on my bed looking back out that same window.

Nothing has changed, only darker. Tomorrow, the real game begins. L, the white and kira the black, and me... the lonely pawn waiting to be moved around the board.
