Chapter 14 – No one knew

It had been exactly one month since Barry had moved in with Lofty, they both got on great and Barry's behaviour was better. He walked into school and went to his first two lessons and then Lofty helped him him for the next two periods before lunch. Barry usually spends lunch with his sister Kacey as he didn't see her much now he wasn't at home. He walked into the canteen and saw her sat down, he said hello to his little sister then went to get his lunch.

"Kace I thought this school was supposed to be all about healthy eating?"

"It is"

"Then why are they serving brownies?"

She rolls her eyes "apparently the teachers are testing whether we would pick health food or junk food"

"That's stupid, why wouldn't you get a brownie"

"I know it's a stupid test"

As they were talking Gabriella walked past glaring at Barry none stop

"Am I that irresistible you can't help but stare?" said Barry

"In your dreams" she said walking away

Barry stared after her "What a weirdo" he said picking up his brownie and taking a bite his face turned weird as he bit it Kacey laughed.

"Ha what's wrong with you?"

"It tastes strange" Barry said not recognising the taste of nuts as he never has them

He took another bite but it still tasted just as weird

"Here let me try some" Kacey said taking a bite

"It doesn't taste weird at all"

"I will take that thanks Kacey" said Gabriella stealing it out the girls' hand. "Thanks for lunch Barry, mmm chocolate brownie with nuts my favourite"

"What it has nuts?" said Barry

"Yes Barry it has nuts you know the things you don't have Gabriella laughed to herself

Barry felt his throat start to tighten and his breathing got harder, Kacey looked at him

"Barry what's wrong? She said seeing him hold his throat

"He's faking it!" said Gabriella

"I can't breathe" he said starting to choke and then he fell on the floor, everyone gathered round but no one knew what to do. Teachers never had lunch in the canteen so there was no one to help.

"Gabriella go get help"

She stood there not moving staring at Barry in shock

"GABRIELLA GO" shouted Kacey as Barry continued to choke

Gabriella ran put the canteen to find help she saw Miss Boston in her classroom but she wouldn't help Barry if he had died, she also saw Sue Spark but she was so slow she wouldn't even realise what was happening. She carried on running looking for Lofty; he was Barry's guardian so should be able to help.

She got to the staffroom and knocked, Grantley answered

"Ahh Miss Wark, what trouble have you come to cause now, whatever it is..."

"I NEED MR CHILTERN" She shouted running in the staffroom

"OI YOU CAN'T COME IN HERE" Shouted Grantley

"It's ok Mr Budgen" said Lofty standing up "What's wrong Gabriella?"

"It's Barry he was eating then started to choke and ...he's not stopped and ...he ...I..."

"Where is he!?"

"The canteen" Gabriella said as her and Lofty ran there. Lofty was so worried as he thought of Barry as his own and he had never ran so fast in his life, he got to the canteen with students gathered around Barry worried and Barry on the floor.

"Right so he was eating and he just started to choke?" said Lofty kneeling down next to Barry

"Yes sir, he was just eating a brownie" said Kacey

Lofty thought, Barry was allergic to nuts and sometimes nuts were put into brownies

"Wait did that brownie have nuts in it?"

"Yes sir"

"OH NO, Barry is allergic to nuts"

"What he never told me" said Kacey

"No one knew" Lofty said he remembered Barry had an epipen but it had been 10 minutes he didn't know if it would do any good. Luckily the paramedics arrived who Kacey had called. All Lofty could do was watch as his little boy got taken away.
