Nightfang

Chapter 14: Medical Emergencies

The five cats went back to what they were doing previously. Leopardpaw happily grabbed some tansy and hurried back to the camp while the others continued their hunt. Every once in a while, Stoneclaw stole a glance at his sister. He still wasn't quite convinced that she got out of a fox fight without anything to show for.

Nightfang saw him looking at her once, when she dashed up a tree to get a jay. When her eyes met his, he looked away quickly. She tilted her head, but shook it off and jumped down with her prey.

When the hunting party started to walk back to camp, Nightfang stopped. Dropping her vole and jay, she said, "You guys go on ahead. I left a mouse back in the clearing."

Whitestripe kept walking and Lionclaw nodded, not able to speak around his robin. Stoneclaw turned towards her. "O-ay," he said through the mouse in his mouth. "'E 'are'ul!"

The dark she-cat smiled. "When am I not?"

Her brother rolled his eyes and quickly dropped his mouse. "I'm not going to answer that."

Laughing, Nightfang buried her prey and took off. When she made it to the clearing, she sniffed her surroundings. 'No cats nearby. Good.'

Quickly, she changed into Spiritfang and hurried to the camp invisibly. Once there, she turned visible and phased through the thorns. As she came through, Spiritfang quickly scanned the clearing. Redpelt, Featherpelt, and Stoneclaw were eating in the shade of the High Rock. Waterheart, Lionclaw, Foxtail, and Flamefoot were eating in the sun. Leaffur and Whitestripe were sunbathing together on the High Rock. The other cats she guessed were in dens.

As the white ghost cat started to walk towards the Medicine Cat den, every cat in the clearing looked towards her. She tried to ignore the feeling of the gazes as she phased through the den entrance.

Spiritfang looked around the dark cave that smelled strongly of herbs. She could just spot the brown fur lying in the middle of the den and the ginger in the back. Just in the separate den connected to the main one, she could make out a smaller yellow-orange cat poking around the wall.

"Grasswhisker, Leopardpaw?" she whispered.

The medicine cat whipped around. "Nightfang! I told you to stay out!" Spiritfang flinched and quickly looked at Mudpaw, to make sure he was sleeping and didn't hear the ginger cat calling her 'Nightfang.' She sighed in relief when seeing he was.

The apprentice ran into the bigger den. "Wait! She's here to help, Grasswhisker!"

The older cat looked at her confusingly. Spiritfang stepped forward. "I got in a fight with a fox today and told Leopardpaw I could heal in a few moments. She wanted me to try healing another cat."

Grasswhisker's head shot towards her. "Do you think you could?"

Spiritfang sat next to the sleeping tom. "It's worth a shot." Mudpaw coughed in his sleep, making her look down with worry and determination.

Taking a deep breath, the white ghost place her front paws on his side. She closed her eyes and focused on her powers, reaching deep within herself in hopes to grasp her healing ability.

Peaking her eyes open after a few minutes, Spiritfang slumped when she saw the still sick apprentice.

Grasswhisker walked forward and put her tail on the young warrior's shoulders. "You can't do everything," she said sadly. "And I know it sucks, but a hero can't save everyone…"

Leopardpaw bowed her head and walked back into the Herb den, her tail dragging behind her.

Spiritfang watched the smaller cat walk away. She narrowed her eyes with persistence. "But all heroes try."

She arched her head again and clenched her eyes shut. Spreading her paws out a little, Spiritfang focused on healing the apprentice again.

Grasswhisker sighed and started to walk outside to get some prey. Everyone knew of Mudpaw's condition. Most knew he wasn't going to make it, even Mudpaw himself…

When she walked back in, she dropped the jay and vole she had been carrying.

Spiritfang's white and black paws were now glowing a vibrant green. Leopardpaw rushed out of the smaller cave at the sight of the green light. The white cat's eyes stayed closed, and by now, she was clenching her teeth. The light filled the den, drawing a few cats' attention from the outside.

With a bright flash, the glow was gone. Spiritfang panted a bit and opened her eyes. A few cats poked their heads inside to see what was going on.

Mudpaw groaned and sat up. He looked around and tilted his head. "Why's everyone looking at me?" he asked, no crack in his voice.

"Mudpaw!" Leopardpaw squealed. She rushed over to her brother and nuzzled his head with hers. "Thank you so much, Ni- Spiritfang!"

The ghost cat smiled. "No problem, Leop-" she was cut off by a few small coughs. Shaking her head, she turned towards the now worrying cats. "Don't worry. *Cough* I'll be fine in a few minutes." Standing up, she walked towards the exit.

"Oh no you don't!" Stoneclaw stepped in front of her. "You saved Mudpaw and probably took his greencough in the process! Stay right here." Really, he was just a little suspicious. He may not be the brightest star, but he has noticed the clues: Leopardpaw's stumble in words, Nightfang going into a battle with no cuts, Spiritfang's healing ability.

"Stoneclaw, I'm fine." With this, she fazed through her brother and flew out of the camp.

X.X.X.X.X

Nightfang ran back to the camp as fast as possible. Yah, she was a bit weak at the moment, but she was right when she said she would be fine in a few minutes.

She rushed into the clearing ran towards the Medicine Cat's den. Before she could reach the Fresh Kill Pile, the cats filed out of the den. Stoneclaw in the lead.

"Nightfang!" he yelled, rushing towards her. "Spiritfang saved Mudpaw! Where were you?"

"I just got here," she told him. "I knew Spiritfang would do it soon, but not this soon!"

Stoneclaw tilted his head. "Didn't you leave to get a mouse?"

If it wouldn't have brought suspicion, Nightfang would have face-pawed. 'I forgot about the mouse!'

"Right, uh… That's why I was gone for so long!" she thought quickly. "I looked everywhere for it, but the fox must have come back and took it."

The grey tom didn't look fully convinced, but didn't press on any more.

"Nightfang! Stoneclaw!" someone called behind her. The two looked in the direction of the voice. Foxtail and Iceheart were waiting by the camp entrance. "We're going on a border patrol," Foxtail said. "Let's go!"

"Coming!" the siblings said in sync. With one last glace at his sister, Stoneclaw raced towards the two, Nightfang following after him.

X.X.X.X.X

The four cats quickly made it to the Windclan border. They had just finished patrolling the Shadowclan border and renewing the scents.

Nightfang went to a farther down as the others renewed the border. She sniffed the edge of her territory.

"Nightfang!" a voice called out. Said cat looked over the border and saw Skypaw running towards her.

"Hey Skypaw," she greeted.

The white apprentice ran up to her. "Nice to see you again, Nightfang!"

"Same to you." The older warrior looked around. "You out here by yourself?"

Skypaw shook her head. "No, I'm with a hunting patrol. I caught a rabbit back there and scented you!"

Nightfang smiled. "A rabbit, huh?"

Her dark green eyes lit up. "Yah! Suntail said I'm the best at catching them! Wanna see?"

The dark she-cat laughed. "Nah, I believe you." The apprentice looked up at her like she was her idol. It made her feel great to know an apprentice looked up to her.

"You haven't told anyone about… You know what, right?" Nightfang asked. She knew what the answer would be, but just wanted to be sure.

Skypaw shook her head. "No, no one in Windclan knows the secret."

"Secret? What secret?"

Nightfang spun around to see Stoneclaw staring at her, his head tilted and eyes narrowed.

Skypaw backed up, bowing her head. The black she-cat looked at her, then back to her brother. Knowing she was shy, Nightfang answered for her. "It's nothing, Stoneclaw. I just told her you have a crush on Spiritfang."

Her brother's eyes widened to an impossible size. "N-No I don't!"

Ignoring the held back laughter from the apprentice, Nightfang continued. "Oh please, Stoneclaw. Everyone knows! And if everyone knows, then of course your sister would."

Foxtail and Iceheart walked up from behind the embarrassed grey tom. "What's going on?" Iceheart asked.

"I do not have a crush on her!" Stoneclaw yelled. "I said she was cute!" The two black and white she-cats burst out laughing, making him realize what he said. His tail drooped and ears flopped down. "I have a mate!" he defended.

Before she could taunt him more, Redpelt ran in front of Stoneclaw. "Come on!" he yelled.

"Why?" the grey tom asked, happy to not be on the crush topic anymore.

"You know why!" Redpelt disappeared into the bushes again.

Stoneclaw stared comically at where his best friend ran off to. His ears were flat on his head, sky blue eyes wide, mouth hung open and tail flopped on the floor. Without a word, he dashed off into the brambles.

"What was that about?" Skypaw whispered to Nightfang, not wanting to talk to the other warriors.

"I have no idea…"

Iceheart cheered and ran after the boys, Foxtail not far behind. The Halfa tilted her head. "Am I the only one who doesn't know what the big deal is?"

Skypaw walked to the edge of Windclan, just enough to where she's not trespassing. "No, I don't either."

"Skypaw! Come on!"

Said cat whipped around and ran towards the voice. "Bye Nightfang!"

"Bye…" Nightfang didn't look back, just started to walk towards where the cats ran off to.

Following the cats' scents, she made it to the camp entrance. Pushing through the thorns, she was surprised to see every cat gathered around a single den.

I'm just gonna stop there. :3 Anymore and you will know what's going on. XD
