I was a bundle of nerves. And I kept fidgeting with my hair even though Grace kept telling me to stop touching it. I ran my fingers through my hair when I was nervous. It was an old habit that was impossible to break.

"Would you stop," Grace snapped at me, catching me in the act yet again.

"I'm not doing anything!"

"Yes, you are," She countered, narrowing her hazel eyes as we walked up the path towards First Beach, "You look perfect, Lucy, so stop fidgeting. Jacob will not be able to get enough of you."

I looked down at my sandaled feet, my cheeks burning. I had been a nervous wreck the whole drive from my house to the beach, the butterflies never quite left my stomach and the beating of my heart only got louder in my ears. Grace and I had ditched our shoes back at the car so the pebble and sandy mixture of the shore felt cold on the bottom of my feet. Whoever had planned the party had gotten the time perfectly.

It wasn't too cold that you needed a jacket but cool enough that you were comfortable wearing shorts and a tank top. And the sun was in the middle of setting, painting the sky in deep hues of red, orange, pink and dark blue. The ocean itself looked like it was on fire.

"Hey Grace," A guy yelled, waving her over, as she and I approached the huge group of people that were mingling around a bonfire. The bonfire was in full swing, the blue-green flames licking at the tree limbs.

Wait, green flames?

I took a second glance at the fire and the fire was definitely blue.

"It's the driftwood," A husky voice chuckled from behind me, "The salt on the wood makes the fire turn blue when you burn it."

I turned around to see Jacob standing behind me, his full lips starting to curve into a smile. He was wearing light wash jeans and a gray sweatshirt that hugged his chest. Jake took a step closer to me and suddenly my body felt very warm. I was sure that my cheeks were turning bright red so I used my hair to hide my face, turning towards the fire.

"Its really pretty," I replied, smiling up at him. I couldn't help it. His smile was too contagious.

"Yeah, I had a feeling that you'd like it," Jacob said, leaning forward to whisper in my ear, "I'm really glad you decided to come, Lucy."

His breath tickled my ear and causing a shiver to go down my spine. A small laugh escaped from his lips at my reaction and I was tempted to slap him. Jake was one of my closest friends since I had come to Forks so why was I only now beginning to realize how my body reacted to him?

You've always known. You just didn't want to admit it to yourself.

Oh shut up.

"Do you want something to eat or drink," Jake asked. On the other side of the fire, there was a long white plastic table that was covered in food. Someone had even brought a portable grill to cook burgers and hotdogs on. A dark haired man was managing the grill, smiling at everyone as he handed him or her a plate of food. There were multiple red coolers that a group of people was lingering by with dark brown beer bottles in their hands.

Grace caught my eye from the other side of the fire, grinning. She was talking to some boy. I couldn't get a clear view of his face but he was tall. Grace stood on her tiptoes so she could whisper in the boy's ear and pointed in the direction of Jake and I.

"Do you want something to drink," Jacob asked.

"A beer would be great, actually," I replied.

"You like beer?"

I raised an eyebrow. "Well I've had beer before to know that I like it. I'm not your typical girl, you know."

Jacob smiled softly, leaning forward. The first thought that crossed through my mind was that he was going to kiss me. I started to close my eyes as he leaned closer, only for him to tuck a piece of hair behind my ear. But he didn't move. Our faces were only a few inches apart. All I had to do was stand on my tiptoes and press my lips to his.

I wanted to but something was holding me back. Grace said there was a way that Jacob looked at me. It was a look he had never given any other girl. So why was I so scared? Any girl would jump at the chance to have Jacob all to herself.

I wanted him all to myself.

"You really are not but that's why I l-," Jake, whispered softly before cutting himself off short, before standing up straight, "I'll be right back."

I watched him

"Lucy," Grace yelled my name, she stumbled towards me after Jacob had left to get our beers, a lazy smile on her face and her cheeks were a faint pink, "There is someone I want you to meet."

She wrapped her arms around my shoulders, leaning most of her weight onto me. I caught myself from falling and Grace giggled in my ear. I had never seen her like this before.

"She's had a few beers," The guy chuckled.

I glared at the boy. "How many is a few?"

"Three or four," My best friend giggled, pulling away from me and sitting down on the sand.

"Don't worry, I'm not going to let her have anymore. She had this smart idea that she could out drink me but no one can outdrink the Great Embry Call."

"Then get me another beer," Grace snapped at him. She was lying on the sand now, her dark hair spilling from her braid. "I'll show you that the Great Embry Call is just a bunch of bullshit."

"Not gonna happen, Medina," Embry chuckled, "You're going to have bad enough of a hangover in the morning."

"Oh shut up."

"Just make sure you drink plenty of water in the morning," He teased her, "You're going to need it."

Grace mumbled something unintelligible but it sounded something along the lines of "Shut the fuck up".

"Oh you've pissed her off," I giggled.

"Yeah but she won't remember any of this in the morning."

"Yes, I will," Grace, growled, "And then I'm coming to your house and kicking your ass."

"Oh I'm so scared."

"You fucking should be, Call. You don't want to mess with me."

Embry rolled his eyes and grinned at me. "I don't think we've officially introduced ourselves," He said, "I'm Embry Call. I'm one of Jake's best friends."

"It's nice to officially met you, Embry," I laughed, "I'm Lucy."

"Nice to officially met you too, "He chuckled. Embry's eyebrows scrunched together as he glanced around the bonfire, "Where is Jake? He didn't leave you all alone, did he?"

I shook my head, "No. He went to go grab us a few beers."

Speaking of Jacob, where was he? He went to go grab the beers over ten minutes ago.

"I think I am going to see if I can find him. I'll be right back."

"You want me to come with you," Embry asked.

"No, stay and keep an eye on Grace."

Embry nodded his head, taking a seat next to my friend on the sand. I walked around the bonfire, elbowing past people as I went. The sand on the edge of the bonfire was covered in ash. The fire was dying, the flames more red than blue now. And there was more of a chill in the air so boys and girls were coupling up under blankets and trying to find a good spot on the beach to watch the fireworks. I shivered as I walked down the beach. I should never listen to Grace's fashion advice again. I was freezing. And it was taking me longer to find Jacob than I had first thought. I mean he's six foot five; he's pretty easy to spot when he's standing up.

"Have you seen Jacob," I asked one couple who were too busy making out under their blanket to pay attention to me. The guy waved his hand at me to go away before sticking his tongue further down his girlfriend's throat.

"Rude," I muttered under my breath. There was only one more couple left, the one farthest from the beach. I didn't have to get very close to know that it was him. I recognized his broad shoulders, angled that it could only mean he was kissing someone.

Someone, who wasn't me.

He must have heard my sharp intake of breath because the blanket fell from Jake's shoulders. The chilly breeze making him pull away from the girl he was just kissing.

"Jakey, why did you stop?"

My blood turned to ice.

"Yeah, Jakey," I mocked in Heather's nasally voice, "Why did you stop?"

Jacob jumped to his feet, his mouth and eyes wide with shock. He took a step towards me.

I took a step back, blinking the tears out of my eyes. It was getting hard to breath.

"Lucy, please," Jacob whispered, taking small steps until he was close enough to hug me. I covered my mouth to control the sobs that were dying to break through the surface. I shook my head and took off running. He yelled for me to "Wait!" and "Come back!".

I kept running until I reached the dead bonfire. Embry jumped up to his feet when he saw me. Grace was fast asleep, soft snores escaping her lips.

"Lucy, what happened," He questioned. I shook my head, taking a step when my whole body went numb, falling to the ground. I heard Embry cuss and yell for Quil and someone named Sam. There was some mumbling before my body was lifted into warm arms. It felt nice and it

I just wanted to sleep and forget everything. I wanted to go to sleep and wake up back home with Mom and Uncle Beck. But I couldn't.

There was an ache. It wasn't painful but it was there, exactly where my heart should be.

Is this what it feels like when your heart breaks?

TADA! That was a pretty good cliffy right?;) I worked hard on this chapter and I am extremely proud with how this turned out. I have had this chapter planned for a very long time so I am excited to see what y'all thought of it :D

There will be more conflict between Jake and Lucy, don't worry ;)

Don't forget to leave a review :D I love you my little owlets 3
