Chapter 13: Second Year College

August 2002

A week before the Fall semester of Buffy and Dawn's second year at University was due to start, Sam had decided to take her daughters on a trip to a nearby resort. One day they were heading out to do some hiking when a woman, holding a microphone, approached them with a cameraman.

The woman nodded at the trio. "Major Carter, my name's Julia Donovan. I'm with Inside Access. I was wondering if we can have a few minutes of your time."

"I'm on vacation with my daughters, so I really am busy right now," Sam said.

Donovan nodded. "Actually, your name came up in connection with a story I have been working on. Over the past two years several billion dollars of taxpayers' money has been funneled into a secret government project called 'Prometheus'. In fact, it is so secret, the government appropriated the money without the usual congressional oversight, which I think my viewers might find rather interesting."

"I'm sure they would," Sam said. "Come on girls we got a long hike ahead of us." She, Buffy and Dawn started toward the hiking trail as Donovan and her cameraman kept pace.

"Actually, I thought you might find this particularly interesting," Donovan said as she held up a small vial. "It is a metal alloy called Trinium. Supposedly it's being used in connection with 'Prometheus'. I had my experts analyze it. They said it's unlike anything they've ever seen before; at least on this planet. Sure you wouldn't care to comment now?"

Sam dismissed it with a wave of her hand. "I'm sure."

"Or how about this. How your daughter has abilities no one else on this planet has," Donovan said.

Sam stopped short and looked at the woman. "You will leave my daughters out of this. Buffy, Dawn, hikes canceled we're going back to our room."

Buffy marches up to the woman, she was nose to nose quite literally with Donovan. "No one threatens my family."

Dawn looked at Sam with concern, who place a hand on Buffy's shoulder. "Sweetie its ok," Sam said as she turned toward Donovan, "This is over we're going back to our rooms. You follow us I will call security and have you arrested. You even think of running any story mentioning my daughters you will find yourself in a very big lawsuit. That's not a threat it's a guarantee."

Sam, Buffy and Dawn went back to their room and packed. A moment later they had checked out of the resort. Sam dropped Buffy and Dawn off at home before heading to the base to talk to Hammond about the leak they apparently had..

March 2003

Janet looked down at Sam. "How is she doing?"

"Respiration is shallow, pulse is weak," a nurse said.

"Sam, can you hear me? Sam?" Janet said.

"I've lost the pulse," the nurse said as she looked at the monitor.

Janet looked up at the same monitor and frowned. "She's in V-Fib" She said as she picked up the paddles attached to the defibrillator. "Charge to 100. Clear!" She applied the paddles to Sam's chest and shocked her. "Anything?"

The nurse shook her head. "Nothing."

"Charge to 200. Clear!" Janet said as she shocked Sam again.

Buffy suddenly woke as she looked around the University library. She had fallen asleep while studying for an exam. She quickly gathered her books and headded for the nearest payphone. She quickly dialed her mother's extension at the SGC and got nothing. She then tried Janet's extension with the same results, before finally trying General Hammond's office.

At the SGC Hammond was in the observation room when Walter's voice came over the intercom, "General Hammond you have an urgent call from Miss Carter."

Hammond picked up a phone in the observation room. "Hammond."

"General I was studying in the library. I fell asleep and had a dream."

Hammond sighed as he knew what that meant as he looked down through the observation window at Sam lying on the table. "What did you see?"

"Mom flatlining, and Aunt Janet trying to revive her. Is she alright?"

"I'm going to send a car for you and Dawn. Be out in front of the University in fifteen minutes. I will explain everything when you get here," Hammond said.

"General please, is she alright?"

Hammond could hear the frantic tone in Buffy's voice. "Yes. Please though do as I asked," he said.

A half an hour later Buffy and Dawn were escorted into Hammond's office. Hammond smiled at the girls and motioned for them to sit down. "Your mom was working on the gate, there was an electrical surge and she was hurt. The surge did cause her heart to stop. But Doctor Frasier was able to revive her."

Buffy and Dawn let out a sigh of relief. "Can we see her?" Dawn asked as Hammond nodded and led them out of the room.

A couple hours later Buffy and Dawn sat at Sam's bedside as Hammond talked to Jonas, who had replaced Daniel when he had ascended.

"And by the time you closed the iris it was too late," Jonas said. "They set off some kind of bomb. It destroyed the entire Gate Room, maybe even the whole mountain."

Hammond frowned. "You're sure it was SG-15's iris code."

"Positive," Jonas said.

Sam sighed. "Sir, we have to warn them."

"Maybe sending a message is what causes this to happen," Jonas said.

Hammond looked at the assembled group before his eyes rested on Buffy. "Like when you tried to warn Major Carter about her injury."

Buffy visibly flinched, she had been too late but obviously Jonas hadn't he had warned them. But he misinterpreted what he had seen. "Yeah," Jonas said.

Sam looked at Buffy and then back to Jonas. "Jonas, we've been over this. The future isn't predetermined. In the absence of any other information the best thing we can do is follow normal procedure." Sam hoped Buffy had caught the double meaning of what she said. It hadn't been just for Jonas but for Buffy as well.

Buffy simply nodded and put a reassuring hand on her mother's hand.

"Yeah, but if I didn't have this vision we wouldn't be having this conversation. We're already beyond normal procedure," Jonas said.

:"What do you suggest?" Hammond asked.

Jonas thought for a moment and then smiled. "We need more information; we need to know how the Jaffa get the iris code. Now maybe I can find that out."

Sam nodded in understanding. "I thought you said you couldn't control the visions."

"I haven't been trying hard enough," Jonas said.

Janet shook her head. "No, Jonas if we don't get you to surgery right now you could die."

"I need just a little more time," said Jonas.

An idea came to Buffy's mind and she smiled. "Maybe I can help."

"How?" Jonas asked.

Buffy smiled. "I have visions, though mine apparently are more natural than yours. Though generally mine only come to me in my sleep. I think it's time to see if I can have them while awake. This way you can get the surgery you need and I can get General Hammond the information he needs."

"Are you sure about this sweetie?" Sam asked as she looked at Buffy. "You've never seen anything other than what happens to me or Dawn."

"I'm sure, Mom," said Buffy. "I have to try, and it will be less dangerous for me than it will be for Jonas."

Sam sighed and nodded. "It's up to you, sir."

"All we can do is try," said Hammond. "Doctor Frasier will you take her someplace quiet where she can do what she needs to."

"Come with me Buffy," Janet said as she led Buffy out of the infirmary and to Teal'c room. "This is where Teal'c does Kel'no'reem. It is kind of like what we would consider meditation. I will have an airman stationed outside the room. If you manage to have a vision, tell him and he will take you to see General Hammond. I have to get back to Jonas and prep him for surgery."

Buffy nodded and sat in the middle of the room as she closed her eyes as Janet lit the candles around the room before she left.

Jack, Teal'c and SG-15 are jogging up to the StarGate, wary of any attackers. Jack and Pierce, a member of SG-15, get to the DHD first, and Pierce dialed in while Jack kept a look out.

Pierce sent the GDO signal as he looked at Jack. "We're good to go."

A staff blast came out of the bushes behind Pierce and hit him straight in the back. Jack dove down, and he and other members of the team shot their zats in the direction of the staff blast as the Jaffa began to attack them.

Jack took cover behind the DHD, as Teal'c took cover behind the MALP. Two members of SG-15 are hit and go down as Jack and Teal'c see that Pierce was still alive. Pierce raised his head to look at Jack and Teal'c.

Teal'c grabbed Pierce, while Jack provided cover. He is hit in the thigh, and went down.

"Teal'c!" Jack yelled.

Teal'c looked at Jack, then stood up ready to fight again. Then he was hit by two more staff blasts in the back as he fell down, dead. Jack looked at his friend, trying to assess the situation. He heard the shouts from at least a dozen Jaffa moving in on his position, both in front and behind him. He fired his zat again and again.

Buffy opened her eyes jumping up as she ran out into the corridor to the airman. "I need to see General Hammond. Now!" she said as the airman nodd and led her to the General. "Sir, they're walking into an ambush. Jaffa will be waiting for them at the Gate. We have to warn them."

General Hammond nodded and turned to Walter and had him dial the Stargate. He tried contacting Jack, Teal'c and SG-15 but received no response.

"Sir, SG-3 is prepped and ready to go," Sam said as she walked up to her daughter and Hammond.

Hammond shook his head. "I just can't risk it Major. I could be sending them into an ambush. We're just going to have to hope Colonel O'Neill gets the message."

"Then I am going," Buffy said as she started for the door. "You can either send them with me or I go alone."

"No," Sam said as she grabbed her daughter's arm. "Buffy you can't."

"You know what I can do mom," said Buffy. "I can bring them home I know it."

"Yeah but I won't let you," said Sam as Buffy sighed and nodded.

Just then the alarms go off as Walter looked at his monitor. "Incoming off world traveler … It's SG-15 IDC."

"If it really is SG-15…" Sam said.

General Hammond nodded. "Open the iris."

Jack walked through the gate along with Teal'c and SG-15. "We have a wounded man here."

Buffy let out a sigh of relief as she ran down the stairs and into the Gate Room,. She quickly hugged Jack, relieved that he and Teal'c were alright. "Someone want to tell me what's going on?" Jack asked, surprised.

"I had a vision, first ever while awake," Buffy said. "You, Teal'c and SG-15 were ambushed by Jaffa and you were all killed."

"How did you manage to have a vision while awake, Buffy Carter?" Teal'c asked.

Buffy smiled at Teal'c. "I put myself in a kind of trance. From what Aunt Janet said, it's similar to what you call Kel'no'reem."

Teal'c raised an eyebrow. "Indeed."

"I hear tomorrow is your birthday," Jack said. "I don't guess you want to win a million dollars and split it with me do you, you know for your birthday."

Buffy laughed. "My visions don't quite work that way, sorry Uncle Jack."

"Shucks." Jack said.
