Chapter 14: How the Sky Sees the Star
Lucy Heartfilia was presently banging her head against the wooden table in the guild. There was a reason why she was intentionally attempting to injure her head. She was doing this in order to rid her mind of her most recent dream. Damn, why did she have to have that dream? Why did her dream turn out that way in the first place? It started out simple enough. She was autographing her newest best selling romance novel and being greeting by her many loyal fans. Besides her was the warm welcoming presence of her boyfriend, who had placed a warm hand on her arm. Her loyal fans blurred into the background as she turned to smile at her significant other. At first the man's face was blurred, but it only took a moment for that to change. The faceless man's face morphed into one she recognized. Her brown eyes met with the piercing gaze of red eyes. She leaned in towards him wanting to kiss his sexy lips as his hand held her arm tightly.
"Don't want to loose ya, Bunny Girl." He whispered as their lips were centimeters apart.
Let's just say she bolted out of her bed wide awake and ended up falling onto the floor with the dragon plush staring down at her. The images of her dream still played in her mind like a movie. Lucy could not believe she had such a dream. She could not have such a dream about that Dragon Slayer. It could not be possible no matter how enticing. The blonde found herself seeking to find a rational reason why she had such a dream. Lucy blamed the date, she really did. There was no way in her right mind that she would ever dream about kissing that stubborn, arrogant, irritating Iron Hedgehog Head, Gajeel Redfox! It was not possible! How ridiculous that she would want to kiss him!
Sure, he had been nice to her as of late. Look what he did for her at Aeterna Caelestis and that was solid proof that under that tough demeanor was a nice guy. And then there was the date. He had found her in the haunted house when he could have left her there or teased her mercilessly for being scared by some cheep tricks. Yet he did neither of the two and allowed her to seek comfort in him. She also had fun with him, despite the fact the pair wanted to murder whoever invented the roller coaster, she still enjoyed herself. Then he won the dragon plush for her. Maybe he was not as bad as everyone believed him to be.
After all she had never truly appreciated how handsome he looked.
No, I can't be thinking like this! Bad, bad Lucy! Clear you mind of that handsome face of his–okay stop thinking at all!
The combo of the dreams and these thoughts were what she was trying to rid of, yet they still kept coming back up. Lucy groaned as she banged her head against the table again trying to make her brain stop. Hormones, it was all her hormones and the date at fault! That and her lack of sexual activity. She had not slept with anyone since she broke the friends-with-benefits deal with Gray. It was not like she was going to let any man in her bed. Besides, she was not in mood as of late to find a new buddy. Yeah, her life social life was limited to her guild friends, but that was beside the point. She focused on her current problem. She banged her head harder and harder until she felt like her head was going to split. Curse her subconscious mind for dreaming up such a dream about the Iron Dragon Slayer! Oh, then she had to go and name her newly acquired little black dragon plush after said slayer. She froze her mind going into a mini frenzy.
Oh my god, what is wrong with me! Naming my cute adorable dragon plush Gajeel of all names! I named it after him!
Clear your mind Lucy! Forget about that outrageous dream about kissing Gajeel!
FORGET IT!
"Lucy, that looks very painful." A small voice spoke with concern. The tiny voice stopped Lucy's mind rant in an instant. "You're going to give yourself an ugly bruise like that."
"Hi Wendy!" The Celestial Mage smiled at the Sky Dragon Slayer as she sat beside her, wearing a plain green bare back dress. Her calming aura washed over her like a gentle fresh breeze. "I should stop. Don't want my face to be covered in an ugly bruise."
"Yes."
"And yet I still want bang my head onto the table."
"I advise against it." The small blue haired girl stated her eyes filled with concern. "Giving yourself a headache will not help at all."
"Your right."
Wendy nodded with a small smile on her face.
"How have you've been Wendy?" The blonde rubbed her forehead soothingly. "Anything new?"
"No, nothing new really." Wendy smiled softly. "I've been pleasantly good. My jobs have been going well. Oh, but I think Carla and Happy may be becoming more friendly with one another. They went out fishing together today."
"Eh, really?" The Celestial Mage gasped surprised. Way to go Happy! I'm so going to tease him when I get the chance! "And here I thought Carla was never going to give that little fur ball a chance!"
"I believed the same thing, but I gave her a little push." Wendy giggled. He eyes sparkling with happiness. "So far they have been doing fine. I just think Carla may still be reluctant to move any faster though."
"Well, I'm happy for them."
The two mages ended up talking some more about the two Exceeds and there growing relationship. Wendy told her about the small dates Carla had told her about and about the few she had accompanied the two cats on. From the information Wendy had divulged Lucy felt like Happy's and Carla's relationship was still lukewarm. Carla was sure making hard for blue cat. Well, Carla did have expectations after all from what Lucy had gathered. Eventually their conversation shifted to discussing their recent missions. As Wendy spoke Lucy felt at ease and she found herself eying the tiny little Dragon Slayer. Much like her Wendy had not been a Fairy Tail member for too long and both could still be considered novices.
Then again the Celestial Mage had to account all those life threatening situations as well and with those she could certainly say that the Sky Dragon Slayer had grown a little during her time in the guild. She was not the same Wendy she had met during the Nirvana incident. It was only expected she supposed. Who wouldn't change a little with all the craziness that had happen after Edolas and during the Grand Magical Games? Wendy was definitely growing up both as a person and in magical power.
The blonde began to subconsciously compare the Wendy she knew now to the one she first met. The blue haired girl was still a bit shy around people, especially new people, but she was becoming much more straight-forward with her feelings now. She was a little cry baby from time to time, but Lucy was the same way. The small Dragon Slayer was willing to fight for her friends and guild no matter what. She was slowly gaining self-confidence everyday and learning more about herself. Lucy was proud of the little girl that she had grown to love like a precious little sister, who she will admit she often spoiled on occasion. There was nothing like the experience of watching someone close to her grow up into a young lady. The little girl always brought out her protective instincts and she knew she was the only sensible, somewhat sane, role model the girl had in the guild.
"Then Carla went up to the client and told him not judge me because I was a kid." Wendy had a smile on her face. "The client was really shocked when we came back successful."
"I bet he was." Lucy laughed imagining the man's face in her mind. "So what did you spend the reward on besides your rent at Fairy Hills?"
"I bought Carla some more outfits. She really needed some and they could be so hard to find in cat size. In fact, all her outfits are custom made. So I treated her to a couple of them."
"She must be glad." The blonde smiled. Speaking of shopping, Wendy looks like she has grown a couple of inches. Time to buy her some new clothes and then maybe we can get some ice-cream and go to the park. I should ask her. "Hey Wendy—"
"Lucy—"
The pair of girls spoke at the same time cutting one another off
"Oops!" The blonde woman laughed a little before she gave her attention to Wendy again. "You go first."
"No, you go first!" The Sky Dragon Slayer insisted her face flushing with nervousness. "I don't mind."
"I insist you go first Wendy. I'm sure what you want to tell me is important if it has you work up like this."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Well umm, Lucy…" The dark blue haired girl squirmed in her seat. "I was wondering…"
"Yes, Wendy?" Lucy asked in a soft voice hoping to encourage her to ask whatever she was going to ask.
"Would you like to go on a job with me, Lucy?" The Sky Dragon Slayer asked in a whisper."If you're too busy I understand!"
"I would love to Wendy!" Lucy replied. Of course she would love to go on a job with her! It would be a great opportunity to bond more.
"Really?" Wendy smiled brightly, her brown eyes shining with happiness. "You would go on a job with me?"
"Yeah, sure! We haven't been on a job together before, huh?" Lucy could feel the excitement rolling off of Wendy and it made her giddy as well. Sure, she had been on jobs with Wendy when she was in Team Natsu, but it never was just her and Wendy. "Do you have a job in mind, Wendy?"
"Yes, it sounds interesting!" The little girl pulled out a paper from inside her dress. She straightened it out as she read it off. "Need help in collecting the magical herbs, and deliver them to Ricky's Greeny in the town of Zinclonis."
"A delivery job sounds perfect to me." The holder type mage looked at the reward. "And the reward is not half bad either."
"I was thinking the same thing, Lucy." She grinned as she stood up. "I'll get it approved by Mira-san! We can head out tomorrow! Bye, Lucy!"
"Bye, Wendy, see you tomorrow okay!"
The next day Wendy had woken up extra early. She quickly grabbed her bags waving goodbye to Carla, who she had convinced to go on another fishing trip with Happy. It was not like she didn't want Carla to come with her, but she wanted to go with Lucy all by herself. She just wanted it to be her and Lucy. With positive thoughts in mind, she practically ran to the entrance to Fairy Hills, where the Celestial Mage was waiting for her. Her footsteps were quick pace and the wheels of her little roll suit case were having a hard time keeping up with her. The suitcase tumbled out of balance a couple of times, but that didn't stop her pace one bit. The entrance eventually came to view as did the scent of the person standing near one of the stone pillars of the entrance. Her companion for this job was already there and waved at her. Wendy waved back at her a huge grin on her face. Before any other pleasantries were exchanged the Sky Dragon Slayer abandoned her suitcase and hugged the Celestial Mage, who returned the gesture.
"Good morning Lucy!" Wendy chirped as she reluctantly left the other girl's embrace.
"Morning Wendy!" The blonde grinned as she patted her head. "You're in a good mood today, huh?"
"Yes, I'm excited because this is our first job together, just the two of us!"
"Heh, just the two of us sounds nice." She replied with a smile. Wendy took this moment to look around and noticed that Lucy had no luggage with her.
"Are you taking nothing with you? I don't see any of your suitcases."
"Oh, I'm taking stuff. Virgo is holding my stuff for me until we get into town and a hotel room." The ex-heiress waved her free hand in a small gesture. "Makes traveling easier for me and Virgo loves to be useful. If you want she can hold onto your stuff too."
"Ehh, I couldn't ask you to do something like that!" Wendy stuttered looking down. "I wouldn't want to bother you with something so trivial."
Before Lucy could answer a sparkle of golden light manifested in front of them.
"I'm more than happy to help out a friend of Hime's." The maid spirit instantly offered her hands held out waiting and expecting. "Please give me your luggage and I shall take care of it until you need it."
"Umm…" Wendy wanted to refuse the spirit and tell her she was just fine carrying her things. She was going to say that, but the ice blue eyes of Virgo glittered with determination. That look told the young girl that Virgo was accepting no other answer than yes. So she unenthusiastically replied. "Sure, if it is all right with you."
"I'm happy to be of assistance. Please call me for help at anytime." The chains around her wrists shot forward clasping around her rolling suitcase. "I wish you both happy travels."
And just like she had appeared suddenly she disappeared as quickly leaving a shock Wendy.
"See I told you Virgo would not mind to hold your suitcase. She's always happy to help out."
"I feel like her eyes forced me to accept her offer."
"Yeah, that would not surprise me at all." Lucy laughed before a small smirk appeared on her face. "She never takes no for an answer and has ways to make you say yes. I think out of all my spirits she has the silent threats down to a tee."
"Lucy has some scary spirits." The Sky Dragon Slayer pouted.
"You're so cute Wendy!"Lucy slipped her hand into hers and began to gently pull her forward."Well, we should hurry. We don't want to miss the train."
"Yes."
The walk to the train station was not that far from Fairy Hills and they spent that walk conversing about simple things. When they had reached the train station it was somewhat empty save a few other passengers, so it was easy to find a booth for themselves. Lucy ended up reading a book awhile Wendy was looking through an issue of Sorcerer's Weekly. She peeked up at the blonde every once in awhile. As she sat Wendy tried to keep herself calm, but it was a losing battle. The blue haired girl couldn't contain the excitement bubbling up inside her as she sat across from her. Wendy had always been fond of the blonde Celestial Mage, who treated her like a sister. She could not begin to measure the amount of kindness that had been shown to her by the ex-heiress. Lucy would often drop by Fairy Hills to visit her, take her shopping for new clothes or just out for ice-cream. The blonde always made time for her and that made her feel welcomed every day.
Wendy felt like she had sister she could rely on.
She recalled her younger days with Grandeeney and Mystogan. She had felt this feeling of happiness and family with them. She cherished it above anything else, but that was cut short. When she was in Cait Shelter with Carla she was beginning to regain the feeling of family back ever so slowly, but that too was taken out of her tiny little hands far too soon. After these two bad experiences Wendy became cautious. She did not want to fall under the same cycle again for a third time. Even after she joined Fairy Tail that wariness stuck with her.
The Sky Maiden was ecstatic that she had met other Dragon Slayers like herself. Despite the fear that her happiness would be gone again, she found herself enjoying the jubilant atmosphere she was now surrounded with. Every day she started to open up more and learn more about her fellow guild mates. Everyone made an effort to get to know her. The little girl made new friends and new memories that she could cherish. She began to love everyone, but what she enjoyed the most was Lucy.
It was not just her happy disposition or her welcoming presence that made Wendy like her show much. It had everything to do with her scent. She loved the Celestial Mage's peach blossom scent the moment she had met her. Lucy's scent made her feel like she was wrapped in a loving embrace and safe every time. The little blue haired girl understood why the Fire Dragon Slayer was around Lucy. That wasn't the only reason she was drawn to the blonde.
There was also the fact that they were newbies to Fairy Tail.
It was only natural for Wendy to seek someone who was in a similar situation like her. She had bonded rather quickly with the blonde woman because of that reason as well. Lucy had made it easy to speak with her and her scent was a plus as well. Eventually, Wendy found herself seeking the blonde out when she was in need of comfort or just wanted someone to spend time with. Since they had spent so much time their bond grew stronger and stronger. Wendy soon found herself instinctively naming Lucy her Nee-chan, her older sister. That was what her dragon instincts categorized the Celestial Mage as. Since that discovery Wendy only viewed Lucy as such, though she was too shy to tell her.
So it was only instinctual that the Sky Dragon Slayer worried for the person she dubbed as sister. The minute she had noticed the distance going on in Team Natsu her worry meter went off. Her Nee-chan was a social person. She would do anything to make her friends happy, even if it meant she got the bad end of the bargain. The little blue haired girl had decided to keep a careful eye on the situation and it looked like the blonde was going to be hurt in the end. Instead Lucy just bounced back after quitting Team Natsu. She was glad that the blonde showed that she wasn't going to let Erza-san and Natsu-san treat her badly and then she went on like nothing happened.
The strength that Lucy had shown that day was one of the many commendable that the blue haired girl admired. Wendy liked her strong heart and sense of perseverance. It was something she wanted herself to develop as well. She didn't approach Lucy, she just observed her from a distance and closely when Lucy spoke with her. After watching her go on a few jobs by herself and one with Gray-san, the small girl decided to do something. She decided she wanted to go on a job with her because some small selfish part of her wanted the warm smile of the Celestial Mage and attention focused on her.
There was also the want to impress the mage she called her Nee-chan.
So she waited and waited, building up the courage to ask the blonde to go on a job with her, until she finally decided it was time. Wendy found a perfect job that would work for the two of them; all she had to do was ask. She was so nervous when she approached her Nee-chan, who was banging her head on the table. The Sky Maiden briefly wondered why she was hurting herself? As soon as she sat down she fidgeted and her fidgeting grew worse when she asked the Celestial Mage. Sitting there and waiting for a reply was the worst, but to her relief and happiness the blonde said yes! The blue haired girl felt her heart dance inside her tiny little body with joy knowing she would have her Nee-chan to herself for a couple of days.
She couldn't be any happier!
She would not have to worry about competing with Erza-san or Gray-san for the blonde's attention, but most importantly there would be no Natsu-san to either. Wendy knew that Natsu did not like to share the Celestial Mage's attention much. The Fire Dragon Slayer had made that blatantly clear on several jobs. The Sky Dragon Slayer understood why, since she was like Natsu-san. Dragon's were territorial creatures by nature and that was instilled into them too. Wendy was not as obvious as Natsu, but she tried to keep the ex-heiress' attention on her when was around So it was going to be nice without him around. The blue haired girl's lips stretched into a smile.
"Wendy, are you okay?" Her Nee-chan's voice made her look up into slightly worried brown eyes. "I've been calling you for awhile and you didn't answer. Are you alright?"
"I'm sorry my mind was wandering, Lucy." Wendy smiled reassuring the blonde that nothing was possibly wrong. "Nothing is wrong."
I am with you Nee-chan. Nothing can ever go wrong.
