Daniel opens the door and I see it: My brother is wearing his suit. He's holding a pistol while he screams something.
"Metias!" I scream, he turns immediately.
"June," he says and runs at me, he gives me a big hug. "Are you fine?" He asks and I nod. Then he looks up at Daniel. "You're going to jail." The anger fills his voice.
"What? Why?" Daniel asks.
"Daniel," his mother says and he looks at her. "Metias is saying that you broke into the hospital. That you stole the cures…" Daniel's father is holding her.
Daniel doesn't say anything and Metias looks down. He obviously is noticing the bandage. "What happened?" he asks.
"I cut."
"How?" Metias asks. "You kidnapped my sister. You stole the cures… I should kill you."
"Then you would have to kill me," I tell.
"Shut up, June."
"I stole the cures, Metias," I tell him and he just looks at me without believing it. Then he holds Daniel by his t-shirt.
"You made my sister follow your…?" He asks but after he finishes, I push him away.
"I'm sorry," I tell him and he shakes his head. He's now believing it. "The Republic killed our parents because they wanted to give the cures to the poor people. Metias, they helped to create the plague and they wanted to fix their mistake…"
"June," he says and it sounds like a warning. He's shaking his head.
"I made him follow me. It was all my fault, so if somebody is going to jail, that person will be me."
"No, no, no. Stop this. You didn't do that…"
"My parents were killed and I wasn't going to stay there, looking how the murderers were getting away with it…"
"June," he says, his voice is a whisper. "The patrols are here. I can't do anything." When he looks up, his eyes are full of tears.
I shake my head. Daniel looks at me and I know we're thinking on the same.
"We'll have to run away, Metias," Daniel says and Metias shakes his head.
"Don't. Don't take her away from me. She's the only family I have," he says, tears streaming down his face. "June, tell me this is a joke. Please."
"I have to do it, Metias," I tell him. "Metias." I walk towards him and he looks at me, shaking his head. "You will take care of his family, okay?" I ask and Daniel's mother cries.
"Why you had to make that, Junebug?" He's almost frustrated.
"I had to make justice, Metias. And you're going to make it too. You have to run away with his family. Tell me you will," I tell him and he looks at Daniel. "I ruined their lifes. I have to fix it."
"Fast," he says, then he cleans his tears. He hands me the gun and I shake my head.
"We can't use it, they'll find us with the localizer," Daniel explains and Metias gets up. He looks so frustrated.
"Listen to me, Junebug," he says and I look at him. "I'll take them near the colonies. I'll find you there. I'm going to search for somebody that can make us get away from this country. I've heard about Antartica and Africa. Maybe we can even stay in the colonies."
I just nod.
Daniel is telling things to his family while Metias tells me this.
I cry a little. "I'm sorry about this. I'm sorry."
"It's done. Get out of here, I'll see you where we went together that time you broke like six ribs. Okay?" He asks and I nod. "Don't cry. We'll be fine."
"I love you."
"I love you too," he replies.
Daniel walks towards me, his mother is crying. John looks at us and then he just looks away.
"I'm sorry," I tell them and then Daniel is holding my hand to get me out of here.
When we're running towards the train rails, I look back. Metias is running in the opposite direction with Daniel's family.
When I turn my head, Daniel is looking on the same direction. Then he just turns his head.
I feel so guilty. So scared. It would be different if I ruined just my life, but I ruined so many in just one night.
When the train passes by, he helps me to get in. I hear screams at the distance. They patrols are probably noticing that everyone is gone. No Metias. No Daniel's family. No one.
I stay in silence. I want to tell him so many things, but at the same time, I know that those words won't help him at all.
I walk at the door of the train, I look how the sun rises, the darkness leaving slowly. The wind hits my hair, making it float. I close my eyes as a tear runs out from them. A hand holds mine and I open my eyes, just to look at him.
Daniel's face look so serious that it takes me a moment to recognize him. He puts a piece of my hair behind my ear, trying uselessly to put it out of my face.
He puts his nose on my cheek, his eyes closed. I know he's passing for the same as me. I know we're trying to comfort the other somehow, even if we're feeling pain.
I turn at him, his nose chocking mine. I intertwine our fingers. He should hate me. He should have left me. He should have blame it all on me, but instead, he's here, putting in risk everything.
"I'm sorry. You shouldn't be going through this," I murmur and he shakes his head. "I love you," I say and he opens his eyes.
"I love you too," he responds, as he leans closer. "Don't worry, we'll be fine," he murmurs and I nod.
We stare at the horizon. I may not know how things will end, but as long as I have Daniel by my side—as we have each other, I know things will be fine.
