For Crystal, the next morning was the beginning of normal life once again; there were no dragons, no tournaments and no Charlie. Regardless, she got out of bed as normal and get herself ready to start the day, dragging herself down to the great hall for breakfast. She was fairly late this time as she saw the tables were already half filled with students chatting with each other about various subjects about which she didn't care. Wading through the seated children, Crystal placed herself opposite the twins who were speaking with Lee about their latest products, she gave them a half-hearted greeting and devoted the majority of her thinking capabilities to eating cereal, one piece at a time.
However, her exciting cereal eating was disrupted as a group of owls flocked into the hall, each carrying messages for the children seated at the table. Crystal initially ignored the birds but as one flew straight into the area just before her bowl, she raised a suspicious eyebrow. Upon examining the letter she saw it was addressed to her written in an almost neat scrawl that she did not recognise. Regardless, she gave the owl some of the twins' toast and released it back to where it belonged she unfolded it and began to read.
" [Dear] Crystal,
I just came back to Romania- Me and the Dragons are fine, because I know you're going to ask.
I don't have much to say but I thought you might have wanted to know where to send the [owl] Ollie, so I put the address down below.
Charlie"
The corners of Crystal's mouth tugged up into a light smile- the letter was adorably awkward and seemed to suit him well. However, it wasn't long before she noticed the breath of the twins on either side of her neck, the source thereof staring over her shoulders at the content of the letter. Crystal gave a half-annoyed, half-amused, huff and folded the letter, placing it into the pocket inside her robes. She pushed the twins on either side away from her face, she raised an eyebrow at them both as she was greeted with two identically mischievous grins.
"What?" She asked, taking a deep breath in preparation for the endless teasing she had just set upon herself.
"You've got a love letter from Charlie already!?" Fred asked, loud enough for at least half the hall to hear.
"How cute!" George added in a voice that sounded obnoxiously like an overexcited teenage girl- in fact, if she hadn't been the target of such a voice, Crystal would have been amused.
"It's not a love letter!" she was only adding more fuel to the already blazing fire. "He's just letting me know he got back safe."
"He doesn't even do that for mum" George stated, his grin growing wider.
"He must really like you!" Fred continued, clearly enjoying this a lot.
Needless to say, this continued for quite some time until time finally ticked its way to bringing Crystal her much needed reprise. The moment it seemed as though the time had come, Crystal shot up from the table, quickly muttering an excuse before putting herself as far away from the twins as possible, in the hopes that her distance would calm their relentless teasing. Of course, that relief was only temporary, and the teasing took a whole week to die down, after which, the twins found a new source of amusement. Sometime within that week, Crystal finally decided on the contents of her letter, throughout the remainder of that week and then the consequent one, she finally managed write it. Leaving her adequate time to send it off with her owl exactly sixteen days after she'd first received hers. As much as she refused to admit it, she had wanted to send a reply immediately after she'd received her letter but she knew better than to do that lest she provoke an even longer period of attempted matchmaking from the twins. She understood this concept full well.
Charlie, on the other hand, had no such understanding and had taken to glancing up at the sky for unknown birds more often than he'd like to admit. So when he saw an unfamiliar owl come flying in his direction some time after he had woken up, his day was instantly made. The moment the owl- Ollie- Charlie corrected himself, flew through the window of his humble abode, Charlie took the letter from the its leg excitedly, placing food for the bird at the side while he quickly opened up the letter. The contents of the letter was neatly written in a font small and cute, neatly matching Crystal's personality.
"Dear Charlie,
I hope you haven't missed me too much and sorry I was as swift in my reply as you. The twins are still as lively as ever and have yet to stop giving me hell about sending you this.
They've announced this lovely traditional that came with the tournament. They call it the 'Yule Ball' and the twin's are already making a list about who to ask the Beauxbatons girls take up the top half of the list- can you believe them?! It's at Christmas, though and I'm desperately trying to organise a holiday to avoid it- wish me luck!
Anyway, I hope this has arrived to you on time to wish you a Happy Birthday (and, before you even think about it, I promise I didn't get this date in any creepy or stalkerish manner) I've attached a small present for you. I found it being sold at a back alley in Hogsmeade and it reminded me a bit of you so I bought it.
I hope you like it.
With a mild fondness that cannot be equated with love for fear of more teasing from the twins,
Crys
(Ps. The twins say happy birthday as well)"
As he finished the letter, Charlie was smiling like an idiot for no apparent reason until he felt a light nudge against his arm. Charlie turned his attention towards the bird and noticed something else attached to its foot, subtly wrapped and decorated. As though reading his thoughts, the owl lifted its leg to facilitate the removal of the package. As soon as the package was removed, the bird returned to eating more and more of the owl food, consuming a good half of the bowl before slowing down. Meanwhile, Charlie slowly unwrapped the paper, taking care not to rip it as it came to reveal its contents- a small wooden dragon.
Charlie chuckled at how fittingly small it was and how slight the curves and the carvings seemed to reflect the buyer of the gift more than the recipient. He liked it, nonetheless , looking around his stuff ridden table he looked for something to attach the small dragon to. His eyes stopped at some thin leather string, without much though, he looped the string through the dragon and tied it around his neck. He spent the rest of the day- his birthday in a happy mood, further helped by the next few owls who flew trough with birthday wishes from the few friends with whom he managed to stay in touch and his family. They all flew back from whence they came afterwards leaving Crystal's grey owl still in his house by the end of the day.
Charlie kept the bird for several days until he finally came to take out some parchment from his pile of paper. With a deep breath inwards he began writing.
Uh... I'll stop here, the next chapter ought to be a series of letters or something... maybe? Anyway I hope this wasn't as disastrous as I though it was...
