Chapter Fourteen – Lullaby
There was sweat lining my forehead and I was panting heavily. I raised my head slightly to catch a glimpse of the scene unfolded before my eyes. I squeezed Phillip's hand firmly and let out a loud antagonizing scream, "You're doing wonderful, Aurora." I let out a desperate moan and pushed harder. I could feel the child shift into the next stage of labor and I felt all that much more uncomfortable. The contraction stopped and I threw my head back against the pillow. "Next contraction, I would like you to try and push harder. It seems that the child is ready, but needs a little more help from you."
I met my eyes with the doctor and felt Phillip pat a cold rag on my forehead and I breathed out an exhausted breath. I've been in labor for about two hours now, this child is stubborn. Just like its mother. I felt another contraction begin and I let out a few quick breaths in a row. I grabbed Phillip's hand tightly in mine and squeezed tighter than before.
I spread my legs a bit farther apart and pushed harder than before. The doctor pulled the child away and snipped the umbilical cord off and wrapped him in a tiny blanket. For a few paused moments, the only thing that was heard around the room was my deep, relieved breath. A gurgled cough came from the child's throat followed by loud cry as he took his first breath. I fell back against the mattress and rested my head against the pillow. The child's cries grew louder as the doctor walked closer to me. He held the child out carefully and placed his fragile body into my shaking arms. I was shaken and scared, reality finally hit – I was a mother. I looked down into my arms and smiled brightly at the beautiful baby boy laying in front of me. He was letting out whiny cries and the blood was still covering him. I took the blanket and wiped his face gently and he opened his bright green eyes into mine. The eyes looked familiar immediately and I laughed softly, closing my eyes in relief, "Hello."
Phillip sat on the bed beside me and leaned closer to take a better look at the child, "He is beautiful. He looks like you," He smiled down towards me and I grinned. I looked up at him and he pressed his lips on my forehead, "What would you like to name him?"
I looked back down at the body who was twirling in my arms and I placed two fingers on his cheek. He hiccupped and placed his hand on top of mine and I gasped out with his touch. He let out a small whine, "His name will be Nolan. He looks like a Nolan," I grazed his tiny cheek with my fingers gingerly and his crying ceased. He opened his eyes and looked up towards Phillip and me, staring with his huge, translucent green eyes. "Hello, Nolan," I pulled him closer towards me and Phillip stood up to talk to the doctor and thank him. I kissed Nolan on his forehead and he kept his eyes on me, like he was trying to decipher what was going on around him. I couldn't stop smiling at him, "You look exactly like your father." I whispered and kissed his forehead again, "I only wish he were by my side."
I stormed into the room and Phillip was packing a suitcase, "Where are you going?"
He looked up and I narrowed my eyes on his, "This isn't for me. You are going to go away from a while, but when you get back – Nolan will no longer be alive." I raised my eyebrows and took a step forward, "You are no longer carrying a child. Would you like to revert to our old habits?"
I took another step forward, "Go ahead and hit me. Be the bully that you will always be," I shouted in his face and his jaw clenched. "Lay a single finger on my son and I will have a bounty out for your head. I am pretty positive that my townspeople would rather have money rather than a King, such as you."
He leaned closer, "You will not take this throne away from me. Say your goodbyes to our son, he will not be around after tonight. He has been alive two weeks too long," He muttered under his breath. "Now go and leave the castle, or else both of you will be without your heads."
I rolled my eyes and walked out of the bedroom and down the hallway, I walked into the nursery. I looked down to find Nolan squirming in his cradle, staring up at the mobile hanging above his head. His hair was growing darker and his eyes stayed its beautiful green. I leaned down and pressed my lips to his forehead, "Hello darling."
I picked him up and cradled him in my arms and bounced up and down, calming him down. A guard ran into the room and bowed in front of me, "My grace. The King has asked to see the child and ordered me to do it without your knowing."
I smirked at him, "Well you could tell that son of a bitch that my child is preoccupied at the moment. Do not come back either," I warned the guard and he ran out of the room. I looked down at Nolan and he gripped his fingers around a piece of my hair. "We're going to bring you home," I whispered down towards him. "You'll meet your father and I promise that he is much nicer than this bastard King. He will love you so much, Nolan." I pulled him closer to me and kissed the top of his head once again, "He will protect you."
