"What the hell did you do?"
"Christian!" I hissed looking around nervously, "Stan will have out heads if we scare off the limited customers we have."
"Sorry." He apologised but then took another glance at the sponsor sheet. "But seriously? How in God's name did you manage to get him to give you $500?"
Truth be told, I had no idea, but I wasn't about to admit that to Christian. "I'm very good a persuading people." I shrugged like it was nothing. "And he is currently in a 'nothing to loose' situation so I guess it was a happy coincidence." Christian did not look too convinced. "Look, it's boosted our fund by a lot, why are you complaining?"
"Oh I am not complaining." He said flatly. "I just think I need to meet this guy; he is literally our very own saint."
"That he is." I said before I could stop myself. Christian gave me a knowing smile which caused me to glare ferociously at him. "Don't even think about it, Sparky."
"I am not saying anything." He said innocently and I found it a strain not to throw the knife that he was buttering a jacket potato at his head. God must have intervened at that moment because Mia came in looking a little more uncomfortable the usual; this took my mind of killing Christian.
"You okay there Mia?" I asked as she lunged for the alcohol supply. Christian and I watch her desperately rattle through the collection and all but rip off the top of a bottle.
After taking a swing, she composed herself. "Tasha is here."
Ah.
Christian scowled a little but the look on Mia's face told him to shut up. I let out a deep sigh before reluctantly wandering out of the kitchen with Christian to greet his aunt.
In all her glory, she tossed her long raven hair over her shoulder and broke into a toothy smile upon seeing Christian.
"Christian!" she exclaimed excitedly and gestured for us both to sit down with her. "We have so much to discuss about the wedding-"
"Actually, Aunt Tasha," Christian interrupted gently, "Lissa and I ar-"
"Don't you dare say postponing the wedding." Tasha interrupted not so gently.
Christian sighed, "Look Tasha, we are trying to save this place and we need to devote our attention and resources into it."
She just stared in disbelief. "Are you kidding?" Christian sighed again which only made her madder. "You are not choosing this shithole of a place and career over the rest of your life like you did with my offer?"
Christian winced in his seat but I was having none of it. "Listen here Natasha," I said defensively, "can you not, for once, think of someone other than yourself and see that Christian actually cares about this place; so does Lissa, and so do I. We are all here, like one big family, so if you wouldn't mind actually taking the time to consider his beliefs and decisions, instead of trying so desperately to drag him into what you want him to do, I think that will benefit us all."
"I do not recall asking for your opinion Rosemarie." She sneered.
"Well you got it anyway so deal with it." I uttered through gritted teeth. She smiled sickly at me and turned her gaze back to a rather upset Christian.
"Listen, Christian, I know I have not been the most supportive of people but I stand by my actions. This place will never benefit you like the governing body would; it would be better for you and for Lissa. But, I can see that this place means a lot to you so I will help fight for this place." Christian's head snapped up, his eyes wide in hope.
"Really?"
"Really." She said and Christian got up and hugged her.
"Thank you so much Aunt Tasha." He murmured and I felt rather uncomfortable watching predominantly because I did not trust Tasha in the slightest, but I guess I was a little jealous of how close she and Christian were. I suppose that Christian was a little bias towards Tasha; she was the only family he had left so he would do anything to not loose her too.
I looked up from where my head hung to see that Lissa had walked into the room with a huge grin on her excited face.
Uh oh…
"Rose!" she squealed causing Christian and Tasha to break apart. Christian's face softened a little as he saw Lissa and I smiled a little; sometimes I forgot how much they loved each other.
"Hey Lis, what's got you so jolly?" I said and she had to stop herself jumping up and down.
"I have had an idea…" she proclaimed. Uh oh indeed. I raised both my eyebrows and she took the invitation to elaborate. "You remember when we were in grade four and we took those singing lessons..?"
"Where are you going with this Lis?" I said a little worried because I did remember the event. Lissa had wanted to become a singer so she insisted that she required singing lessons. I, unfortunately, had to go too since I was her best friend. As it turned out, we were quite good and went immediately to the top of the class. The teacher – an Irish woman who wore far too much eyeliner – told us that there was an opening for a school but it was two states away. Naturally, Lissa wanted to go but her parents saw reason and stopped her. She was so angry and upset she wouldn't speak to any of us for the next month and gave up all singing lessons.
And yet, here she was with an idea sparking from that event. To say I was worried would be an understatement.
"Well, Christian can play the guitar, Mia, the violin, Sydney, the flute and harp, Mason and Eddie, the drums and Adrian can offer moral support. All we need is someone to play the piano and we can make a band!" she exclaimed and I looked to Christian who, unhelpfully, looked as bewildered as I.
"Quick question Lis," I said looking back to her, "how does that help?"
She rolled her eyes like it was obvious, "We can put on a concert of sorts and people can pay to come and see." I widened my eyes in shock.
"That is not actually a bad idea." I vaguely heard Christian say as he wrapped his fiancée in a loving embrace.
"What do you think Rose?" Lissa enquired after she realised her mouth from Christian's.
"Yes Rose, what do you think?" I had forgotten Tasha was there and was majorly pissed off when I remembered.
"Well…" I began and Lissa's face contorted into a saddened expression. Damn. She knew how to get what she wanted. "Fine, I'll do it."
"Yes!" She cheered. I just rolled my eyes.
"As much as I would like to help, I have a meeting to attend at ten so I should be off." Tasha said and I had to hold back a snigger. "I'll ask around work for you, Christian."
"Thank you, Aunt Tasha." He said and, after and quick hug, she left. I decided I would give to two lovebirds some privacy and rolled myself over to the bar. I started rearranging the liquor bottles when I felt a shadow loom over me.
"What do you want Stanny-boy?" I sighed, turning around to see a cross Stan with folded arms.
"What I want is for you to do your job." He growled and inclined his head to where a family waited for service. Oops. Well, it's not like I was the only one lounging about.
"Yes oh lord and master." I swept into a bow as his scowl increased.
"Go!" he roared and I wander over smiling. I had a good feeling about this day; it may have started off not so good, but I was still certain that today would be good.
"Hello, my name is Rose and I will be you waitress."
More fundraising is on the way! And more Tasha...
I hope you enjoyed this little chapter and I would love to hear what you thought. Please leave a review, they really make my day – especially when you are struggling to learn a Spanish writing and when you do the assessment make zero progress in the upward direction… Not amused :( I only wish your week's were a little better :3
As ever, all the best
