"Abby…open your eyes."
Abby's eyes fluttered open and she found herself laying on the screened in porch back home on the farm. The same porch she so often sat on with her friends, listening to the radio, laughing, talking, and dancing with Wicki. Her eyes opened, staring up at Wicki's handsome face. Right away her heart fluttered. Just looking at his handsome well defined face, his strong jawbone, his thick lips, his beautiful colored eyes, his stubble, and short brown hair…everything that made him perfect.
He was still dressed in that awful gray SS uniform. But this time there weren't bullet holes in it. He stared down at her, cocking his head to the side as he so often did and smiled down at her.
Abby felt a sudden relief.
He wasn't dead.
It was all some horrible dream. They were home now and safe. Outside the sun shinned and the tall grass slowly bellowed around the property. The tiny glass wind chimes Bill had hung up gently sung as a warm breeze blew. The smell of honeysuckle was strong in the air.
He smiled looking down at her. His hand reaching down and gently brushing her hair away. Abby looked at him, the most overwhelming feeling of relief going through her.
"Wicki?"
Wicki continued smiling down at her. Abby suddenly felt very safe. An odd, and distant memory came to her when she remembered years ago shortly before Wicki got drafted.
The two of them had finished their work for the day and it was nearly dusk. Everyone was on the other side of the farmhouse getting their dinner while Wicki and herself stayed behind. She remembered them behind the barn where nobody could see them. She remembered Wicki's slacks and belt were down around his ankles while Abby's slacks were thrown to the side. He had her arms pinned against the wooden side of the barn, and was passionately kissing her neck up and down as she squirmed and giggled.
This was nothing like that horrible time, which now seemed so long ago when the Germans forced Hicox and herself to do the same exact thing.
But this was different.
Abby was short of breath and clutched onto Wicki for dear life. Wicki nuzzled his face against her before making her cry out. Smiling, he laughed and whispered that he loved her…
Abby blinked and then saw with sudden surprise that her once perfectly flat stomach was now swollen and perfectly round. It rose and stood out underneath her blouse.
Their baby was in there.
Wicki smiled, leaning down and kissing her stomach gentle. Abby smiled, reaching over and running her hands through his hair.
"I thought I lost you Wicki…"
Looking down at her he smiled.
"I would never leave you love…"
In the distance she heard birds crying.
"Abby?"
Abby opened her eyes.
She was laying in a bed somewhere, and that beautiful image of Wicki was fading. She tried so hard to hold onto it before it flickered away like a flame. Opening her eyes she looked and saw Donny's worried face starting down at her.
Taking a second her eyes darted around. She never felt so tired before in her entire life, and the cramps, they were horrible.
"Donny?"
"Shhh, save your strength."
His large hand gently touched the side of her face.
Abby's eyes stared at the ceiling and for a split second she didn't exactly know where she was. Laying there, she saw how scared Donny looked and suddenly the horrible reality came back to her. Her heart froze and everything went numb.
She remembered Hicox, Stiglitz, and Wicki…all dressed in their uniforms. She remembered him kissing her goodbye and saying…
"Bis dann meine Liebe..."
Something she didn't understand in German. She remembered that horrible feeling she had and how everything seemed so unreal the moment she heard the gunshots. How terrible and lifeless his body looked underneath those stairs. How he wouldn't wake up…even though he had promised nothing was going to happen.
Abby's eyes widened, the sound of gunshots still echoing in her head. Flashes of Wicki's poor body overcame her and a horrible pain rushed through her. Her stomach turned and tears began to come.
"No!"
She tried to sit up but Donny forced her back down, holding her by the shoulders. Abby looked around the small bedroom and suddenly a dull cramp made her freeze.
She couldn't breathe.
"I…can't…breathe. Wicki…oh my God Wicki…Donny…"
Her words were cut off as she began to gasp for breath. Her eyes rolling back into her head she began to shake, everything going gray. Donny panicked, too scared to even yell out. Instead he simply took hold of her and shook her like a ragdoll.
"ABBY!"
Abby's eyes fluttered open again, her world clearing. Her hand grasped the sheets before she stared up at Donny completely terrified.
"Please…tell me it isn't true. It's a bad dream right? Wicki is okay? Please get him, I want him please Donny! Please!"
"Shhhhh, it's okay clam down…shhhhh."
Donny tried his hardest with soothing her but he was terrible at this. Wicki was the one who comforted her, he was always the one who knew what to do.
Holding her in his big arms he honestly didn't know what to do. Abby then broke down. Clutching onto him she began to cry into his chest.
"Make it stop Donny! Please! Bring him back! I want him back!"
Donny held onto her. Rocking her back and forth and letting her cry. He couldn't do what she was asking. He couldn't bring Wicki back. In fact, he couldn't do anything to stop this pain she was feeling.
Finally Abby looked at him, her eyes bloodshot and worn.
"He isn't dead…tell me he isn't dead."
Donny looked at her carefully, his heartbreaking looking at her like this.
"I'm so sorry Abby…"
"No!"
She cried, burying her head against him. Donny held her tighter, for once feeling like crying himself. Finally Abby tore away from him, tears running down her pale face. Shaking her head she slid away.
"No! Wicki isn't dead! He can't be!"
She slid off the bed out of his reach.
"WICKI!"
She cried, holding onto the bed. Donny quickly grabbed her arm yanking her back into the bed.
"ABBY NO!"
He yelled at her. Abby cried, struggling.
"No! I need to see him! No!"
"Abby he's dead! We left him! You need to lay back down!"
Abby's shocked face looked outraged. Suddenly her eyes seemed hit.
"You left h-him?"
Her voice broke up again, snapping her eyes shut she screamed. Donny grabbed into her, wrapping his arms as tight as he could around her shaking body.
"Wicki! NO!"
She cried, fighting back and forth in his arms. Suddenly she began to shake all over, clawing at Donny's face.
"Abby please! The baby!"
Just then the door flew open, Utivich came hurrying in with his bag. Donny looked helpless.
"Help her!"
Utivich moved quickly, opening his bag just as Omar looked in, his face just as shocked. Utivich quickly produced a syringe and came hurrying over.
"HOLD HER!"
Abby fought, her head thrashing side to side.
"NO!"
Utivich injected her as Donny held her. After a few minutes she was still. Utivich checked her pulse before Omar was the first to speak.
"Is…she okay?"
Omar shifted from one foot to the other in the doorway. Utivich closely looked Abby over before nodding. She laid almost lifeless in Donny's arms.
He then listened to her chest again and stomach.
"She's in shock…but she'll be okay."
Donny nervously looked down at her.
"Will that stuff…hurt the baby man?"
Utivich shrugged.
"As far as I know the baby will be fine. Her heart is going crazy though…"
Donny gathered Abby up in his arms. Leaning down he pressed his ear against her chest and listened to her breath. Looking up at Utivich he seemed completely helpless. Omar slowly walked in before he coughed, causing Utivich and Donny to look over.
"Maybe we should wake the vet…I mean she doesn't look good guys."
Donny held Abby before shaking his head.
"No, she's fine…"
Utivich rubbed the back of his neck.
"She needs a real doctor though…there are limits to what I can do, same with that old man."
"He treats dogs for fuck sakes!"
"I know…but she's in such bad shock I'm scared she might blow her heart out. Or cause a miscarriage."
Omar gulped looking at Donny and then Abby. He wanted to say something but decided it might be better not to.
"We could talk with Aldo…"
Donny shook his head again.
"All Aldo can think of is the mission. She's staying here tomorrow night with the others, after that we'll figure out some way to get her back in the states…"
"You're really going tomorrow?"
Donny looked up, his brown eyes locking with Utivich's blue ones.
"Of course."
"Do you think that's really a good idea."
Donny made a face.
"I'm one of the only ones who can sorta speak a little Italian, besides we fitted the tuxes all ready and Aldo said he needs me."
"Still, what if something happens…you're all she's got left. She might very well be carrying your baby."
Donny deeply sighed before looking down at Abby. Brushing her hair away from her forehead, he shook his head slowly.
"I have to do this…it could mean ending the war Utivich. Really ending it."
Utivich slowly nodded.
"You are planning on coming back aren't you?"
Donny looked up and stared at Omar for a second before looking at Utivich.
"I'll do everything I can to get out of there tomorrow. Aldo said if things turn sour and there's even the slightest risk of Hilter escaping it will turn into a suicide mission. I honestly don't like that. Believe it or not I'm still young…well at least I think so. I made a promise to Wicki that if anything happened I would make sure Abby was safe and I'm planning on keeping it. She's all I got left too. Even if it is Wicki's baby, I want to just hold it in my arms and be what I've always dreamed of being…a father."
Omar and Utivich listened. Never before had Donny shared his feelings the way he was now. It looked as though it was taking a great effort to do so. He continued to hold Abby as he spoke.
"I want this baby so bad guys…I want to know I did one thing right in my life. I knew I loved Abby the moment I laid eyes on her years ago and like Wicki and her I believe it was truly meant to be her being with us. I feel like things are falling apart but I just need to make sure no matter what happens her and the baby are safe. That's all that matters."
Omar looked down at his shoes feeling uncomfortable. Donny looked at Utivich.
"You love her don't you?"
Utivich was caught off guard by this, looking up he blinked.
"What?"
"I can see it whenever you look at her. It's okay, really. I think we all fell in love with her. I need you to make a promise to me…something I feel I wasn't able to keep for Wicki. I need you, if anything happens tomorrow night…any sign of trouble you get the hell out of there. Don't care about us just run…keep running until you get to this farm and take Abby and leave. Take her back home and make sure she's safe. I honestly don't have anyone else I could trust.
"Donny…"
"Please, promise me. Promise me the way I tried to promise Wicki. Please."
Utivich sighed, glancing at Omar he saw he wasn't looking at him. Looking down at Abby in Donny's arms he deeply sighed before looking at Donny's pain filled face.
"I promise."
Donny nodded.
"Good."
Later…
Donny sat up with Abby in his arms in the darkness of the bedroom. He couldn't sleep. He was too wired.
It would be dawn soon.
Sitting there, holding Abby a silent tear rolled down his stubble covered face.
Leaning down, he softly kissed Abby's head and held her tighter.
Today…
Today was the day he was going to die.
