Chapter 14: Helen

Well I think that went well, Dylan thought as he got back into his car after dropping off Alex. I never would've thought I would be able to connect with her through science, yet I did and it was romantic too! With a contented sigh he put his favourite CD on, singing along to familiar lyrics. He found himself replaying their date in slow motion as he drove, pausing for every smile, watching the way the breeze played with her hair, how it had felt to run his hands through its silky strands, the way her hand seemed to fit perfectly in his. Alex was so different to any girl he'd ever dated; hell she was different to any girl he'd ever talked to, but that was what made her special, she made him realise he'd been looking at all the wrong girls all along. It was so sad that society's preoccupation with surface beauty meant that a lot of mud-caked diamonds simply masquerading as rocks were overlooked; all they needed was care to wash away the dirt of low self esteem and insults and they would sparkle brighter than the rest.

Dylan turned down his radio as he pulled into his driveway, he didn't feel like facing his mother and her crabby new boyfriend. He entered his rudimentary dwelling with the book of Greek Mythology which Alex had lowered carefully out of her window for him. It was adorable that she couldn't even imagine damaging a book in any way, even when sneaking around in the middle of the night. At the thought of it he shook his head and crawled into bed, opening the precious book gingerly and flicking through the pages. The first story was about Hercules, and Dylan read in awe about the man who would do anything to make up for accidentally killing his music teacher. When Dylan thought about it, the labours of Hercules were a bit like community service; ridding the country of wild lions, hydras and flesh eating birds and horses among other things. Dylan could sympathise with trying to make up for a stupid mistake, sometimes though even twelve labours weren't enough. At least Hercules got his happy ending though, spending the rest of his life beloved by the gods, happy and free. It was evident why Alex enjoyed reading Greek Mythology, as she would say "it holds a magnifying glass up to human nature, the fact that nothing has changed since the days of the ancient Greeks." Dylan agreed with her too, apart from being interesting and filled with inspiring stories, these tales had good historical value too; it showed the relationship the Greeks had with their gods, and the need for regular sacrifices since the gods seemed to be emotionally unstable, insecure divas who would curse anyone more beautiful, stronger or more praised than them. Wow that Zeus was a bit of a player, Dylan shook his head, he seems to have slept with more people than the whole football team put together. That Aphrodite is also a strange character; she's jealous of any woman prettier than she is, yet will bring a statue to life for some lonely artist to marry! He continued to flick through the pages of the book, stopping as a title caught his eye: the Trojan War. Finally he'd find out what that saying about the horse meant!

'Hey,' Alex opened the door with a huge smile.

'Are you ready to go?' Dylan asked, grabbing her cello from where it stood beside the door.

'Wait a second!' Claire came running from the kitchen. 'Alex honey, I want you back in time for dinner.'

'Yes mum.' Alex rolled her eyes, turning to share a look with Dylan. 'Come on, we're going to be late for practice.'

'See ya Mrs. D' Dylan raised a hand awkwardly and followed Alex to his car.

'Does she know about us?' He hissed once they were inside the protective bubble of the car and out of the range of Claire's superhuman hearing.

'Trust me if she knew that wouldn't have just happened because I would be a prisoner in my own room.' Alex said dryly.

'Yeah of course.' Dylan chuckled, starting the engine. 'I'm really enjoying that book of Greek Mythology by the way.'

'Really?' Alex's face split into a wide grin. 'I'm so glad to hear you say that! Have you gotten through many of the stories yet?'

'Ummm I've read Hercules and the Twelve Labours, The Trojan War, Theseus and the Minotaur which I thought sounded a little bit like the Hunger Games...'

'You're right, I never thought about it like that.' Alex chuckled. 'I see it now though, with the picking of the children as a sacrifice.'

'And I also read Jason and the Quest for the Golden Fleece.' Dylan continued.

'So have you enjoyed them?' Alex asked.

'Yes, they shine a light on the Greek society and their interaction with religion.' Dylan said knowledgeably. He could see from Alex's smile that he'd given the correct answer.

'Dylan, man, you're never going to believe what happened!' Brian came rushing out as he heard Dylan's car come clunking up the street.'

'What?' Dylan parked the car and got out.

'You know that audition tape we sent in for that band contest?' Brian couldn't stand still for his excitement.

'Yeah?' Dylan was watching him expectantly.

'We got in! We're part of the top 50!' Brian yelled, high fiving Dylan.

'I can't believe this!' Dylan looked stunned, 'Everything I've ever wanted is finally falling into place.' He walked over to where Alex was standing, watching the interaction and pulled her into a big hug.

'I'm so happy for you.' Alex whispered.

'It's all because of you.' Dylan murmured. 'You believing in me has helped me realise my true potential.' He pulled out of the hug, holding her at arm's length to smile at her.

'Come on, stop being all sappy you two, we need to practice!' Brian rolled his eyes and bounded back into the garage.

'Let's go.' Dylan gripped Alex's hand and the two of them followed him. The other band members looked up as they entered, noticing the clasped hands but not acknowledging it apart from with a short nod as if to say "well done, man," or "about time."

'So have you got any new material for us?' Craig asked. 'We need something good to play for this competition, nothing too soppy this time!'

'I've started writing a song...' Dylan said hesitantly, 'It's still in a pretty rough stage at the moment though.'

'Let's hear it, we can help smooth it out for you.' Brian nodded.

'Umm okay.' Dylan scratched his head with his pick and grabbed his electric guitar, strumming the intro to the song.

You're the prettiest girl in all the land.

And even though you're with another man,

To the gods I will beseech and pray

To give me your heart and make my day.

You'll be my Helen, I'll whisk you away to Troy,

Because of you face a thousand ships will deploy

Helen, Helen,

I'll be your Paris, let me be your boy.

Soooo for you, my dear

I'll be Greek or turn Japanese

If you'll only say you'll love me!

I would build you a horse out of wood

And fill it with soldiers if I could,

Shower you with expensive things

Because your smile just gives my heart wings

A nine year war is little price to pay for such beauty,

I'll protect you, I'll do my duty.

With all of the things you make me feel,

Helen, you're my Achilles heel.

You'll be my Helen, I'll whisk you away to Troy,

Because of you face a thousand ships will deploy

Helen, Helen,

I'll be your Paris, let me be your boy.

Soooo for you, my dear

I'll be Greek or turn Japanese

If you'll only say you'll love me!

'That's all I've got so far.' Dylan said as he finished the chorus.

'Who's Helen?' Brian asked, looking between Dylan and Alex.

'I loved it.' Alex laughed in joy. 'It was very clever.'

'But who's Helen?' Craig asked. Dylan rolled his eyes, it looked like he'd have to explain the whole story to them.

So what did you think of the new song? Let me know with a review :)
