Pretty little liar's fanfiction- Emily & O.C – Maddie Cavanaugh
Characters: Emily, Spencer, Melissa, Aria, Hannah, Ella Montgomery, Ali, Toby, Jason, Paige & Maddie- more to be added throughout the story.
SUMMARY: Maddie Cavanaugh the link between the Cavanaugh and the Di Laurentis families- who is she? The liar's known. While she is just a distant memory to the rest of rosewood she is much more to the liars. What happens when she comes back? (Set when Spencer started having her suspicions about Toby)

CHAPTER 14- NO ONES P.O.V
"Hello?" Spencer answered calmly, 'no need to freak out, could be a wrong number.' She thought to herself even if she didn't believe it.
There was a pause before Spencer heard someone clear there throat.
"Hello, is this Spencer Hastings?" the person asked their voice neutral, yet professional, giving nothing away. Spencer looked at the girls before answering.
"Speaking." Spencer paused, "who's this?" she asked praying it was a telemarketer.
"Hi, my name is Jensen. I need you to come down to Rosewood General." He said, his voice still neutral, not giving away a thing. Spencer stilled at the news. She wasn't sure is she should be worried or terrified.
"What… uhm, why, what's wrong?" Spencer stammered out, her vast vernacular failing her. Nothing can prepare you for a call like this, even if you expect them.
Jensen sighed, he hated making these calls, it never got easier.
"I regret to inform you that your friend Maddie Cavanaugh has been in an accident. You are listed as her next of kin." He paused, "you do in fact know Miss Cavanaugh correct?" he asked making sure that he wasn't divulging patient information to the wrong person. Spencer was breathless for a minute, her world turned upside down. Maddie was in the hospital? Does that mean she's alive? Spencer was brought out of her thoughts by Jensen.
"Hello? Ma'am are you still there?" he asked cautiously.
"Yes I'm still here, sorry. Maddie is my sister, how soon should I be there?" Spencer asked in a rush, her mind more focused on Maddie and her wellbeing then the actual conversation.
"I would say as soon as possible so you can talk to the doctors." Jensen answered
Spencer nodded her head in acknowledgment then realized that he couldn't see her nod her head.
"Alright, I'll leave now. Thank you for calling." Spencer said in a rush before hanging up the phone. She wasn't trying to be rude but she had 3 other people waiting to hear what was going on. Spencer took a deep, calming breath before looking at the girls. All three wore worried expressions, none the wiser as to what was going on but all had a feeling. The feeling wasn't a good one.
Aria stepped forward and placed a hand on Spencer's arm
"Spence...who was that?" Aria asked cautiously, trying to hide the worry in her voice. Spencer gave Aria a weak smile.
"That was the hospital." Spencer told them, her voice weak from fear and worry.
The girls gasped. Shocked yet not entirely surprised.
"Spence..." Aria started, not sure she wanted her friend to finish the tale.
Spencer, looking at the floor nodded as if to verify the girl's inner thoughts.
" they uhm, they called to say that Maddie is in the hospital and that I should head down as soon as possible to talk to the doctors since I am labeled as next of kin." Spencer said numbly.
It was quiet for a moment, the information sinking in before everyone started talking at once.
"What happened?" Hanna and Aria asked at once, their voiced blending together.
"Is she O.K.?" Emily asked quietly but was heard by all, the question all were wondering yet not wanting to ask in fear of the answer. Emily looked so tiny sitting on the couch alone, her voice sounding lost, as though a child had lost their security blanket. It broke the girl's hearts to see their strong Emily like that.
Hanna moved to pull Emily into a tight hug, knowing very well the thoughts that would be going through her friends head.
"Sweetie, I'm sure she is fine. You guys can talk it all out when we get to the hospital." Hanna said in what she hoped was a reassuring voice. She herself couldn't keep her mind from wondering if A had anything to do with it. 'I swear I'm going to kick A's Ass' Hanna thought to herself angrily.
"You guys ready to go?" Spencer asked, already knowing the answer. No one was ready. The girls nodded their heads regardless as they followed Spencer out to the car, nothing was going to stop them from being with Maddie.
"I'm going to call Caleb and let him know what's going on." Hanna informed them quietly as she pulled out her phone. Emily wrapped her arms around herself as if to physically keep herself together. She could feel the worry forming a knot in her stomach.
Spencer opened the car door in a daze, she was in shock. Had been since Maddie's name entered the conversation. She was scared that Maddie was seriously hurt, or worse. 'Don't talk like that.' She scolded herself, 'Maddie is tough, and she is probably fine.' She reassured herself, it didn't do much good. Spencer gripped the steering wheel as she waited for the girls to get in. Emily in the back driver's side, staring blankly out the window. Hanna sat next to her holding her hand worried about the girl in the hospital she considered a sister. Up in front with Spencer, Aria looked at Spencer and gave her a reassuring smile and grabbed her right hand from the steering wheel.
"Maddie is probably fine Spence." Aria said soothingly hoping the girl next to her would take some comfort in her words. ' I hope you're ok Maddie' Aria thought to herself as she looked at the in the back a sad smile on her face, ' I don't think any of us would be ok if you weren't.' she thought sadly knowing that the idea of losing Maddie again in any form would hurt everyone, especially the 4 girls in the car.
Spencer released a breath she didn't know she was holding and stared the car. The ride was silent as they made their way to Rosewood gen. Everyone silently hoping for the best. 10 minutes later the car pulls to a stop as Spencer parks in the lot. Silently she shuts off the car, the quite rumble of the engine leaving them alone in the quiet of their thoughts and fears. Spencer turns around so she can look at the others better, realizing they look exactly how she feels. Terrible.
"Together." is all she says as the girls slowly turn their gaze to her. "We go in together and we leave together." Spencer states firmly. They don't know what happened but they all know it's a strong possibility that A is behind it.
Aria, Emily, and Hanna all nod in agreement, none of them are going to be alone after this, especially Maddie. Hanna looked out the window and sighed, she really hated hospitals.
"Let's go." Hanna Said, her voice wavering slightly. Emily squeezed her hand comfortingly. Both knew it wouldn't do much until they saw Maddie but it was worth a shot.
Aria looked at Spencer as she grabbed her hand.
"Hanna's right, let's go." She said as she unbuckled her seat belt never letting go of Spencer's hand, knowing the tall girl beside her needed her support. They all needed each others support. Spencer gave a small smile as she too unbuckled her seatbelt. 'time to face the music' she thought to herself as she regretfully let go of Aria's hand to get out of the car, the other girls following suit.
The girls stand together side by side by the trunk of the car. Aria once again reaching for Spencer's hand,
"Together." She said reiterating Spencer's earlier sentiment. The girls let out a small smile and head into the hospital. Each step feeling like a mile. Once inside the girls head straight to the front desk. Spencer taking the lead as she is the only blood relative of Maddie out of the 4.
"Hello, welcome to Rosewood Gen. How may I help you?" A lady in her late 40's in pale pink scrubs asked without looking up from her computer.
Spencer rolled her eyes trying not to be annoyed at the nurse's lack of attention.
"I received a phone call earlier informing me that my sister was in an accident, where is she?" Spencer asked anxiously, her nerves getting the best of her.
"Name." The receptionist asked, never sparing a glance.
"Madeline Cavanaugh." Hanna cut in before Spencer could answer. She didn't like the lady and Spencer was being too polite for her liking in this situation. That and she wanted to see Maddie. Like yesterday, and she knew that Spencer and Emily needed it more than anyone.
"She's in surgery. Please have a seat and the Doctor will update you as soon as they are able." The woman informed them as she vaguely waved her hand in the direction of the waiting area. Her eyes never leaving the screen.
Hanna took a step forward ready to give the lady a piece of her mind when strong arms wrapped around her from behind and lifted her up and carried her towards the waiting room. Aria, Spencer, and Emily all sighed in relief. Caleb. The only person beside Maddie who could calm Hanna down with just their presence. When the girls reached the waiting area Hanna was seated calmly next to Caleb. Caleb stood up when the girls entered
"Do we know anything?" He asked worriedly as he hugged each of them before they all sat down. Spencer shook her head from her space between Aria and Emily.
"All we know is that she is in surgery." Aria informed him sullenly. The group sat in silence for a minute thoughts racing.
"Did you call Toby yet Spence?" Hanna asked abruptly remembering that Toby was still out looking for the still missing Jason. Hanna sighed 'with all the trouble the Cavanaugh/ DiLaurentis/ Hastings siblings get into they should get GPS trackers or something.' Hanna thought to herself only half joking. 'Hell we should all get them' she thought back to all times that they could have been useful because of A.
"Oh Shit!" Spencer exclaimed as she shot up out of her seat, dropping Aria's hand as she hurriedly tried to grab her phone from her pocket. This was not a conversation she wanted to have... Again. It feels like only yesterday she was calling to tell him about Jason. She paced as the phone rang.
"What's going on Spence?" Toby answered voicing his concern, Spencer never called him this often, especially after their last phone call about Jason.
"Toby. Are you near Rosewood?" Spencer asked quietly. Toby paused before answering.
"I'm about a day or so away. I've been looking for Jason in all his old spots." Toby answered confusedly "why did Jason show up?" he asked hopefully.
Spencer sighed "no, no news on Jason." Spencer said offhandedly "I'm actually calling about Maddie, Tobes." She admitted knowing that no one take this news well and she hated that it couldn't be done in person. Spencer heard a sigh.
"What. Happened." Toby grounded out, the protective older brother could be heard in his usually calm and caring voice.
"We don't know yet. All we know is that there was an accident after she left Em's and that she is currently in surgery." Spencer explained sadly, knowing exactly how it feels to be hearing it over the phone. 'But he didn't get the taunt beforehand' Spencer thought to herself, the image A sent seared into her brain. Toby let out a string of curses.
"Sorry about that, it just seems that our family can't catch a break huh?" he said sardonically.
"Yeah I know what you mean." Spencer agreed.
She sighed and looked back to the waiting room. Hanna's head was resting on Caleb's shoulder, her hand was being held by Emily. Aria was watching Spencer. Spencer's heart began to beat a little faster, she suddenly wanted to be back in the waiting room her hand in Aria's.
"I'll let you know the moment I know something." She began her feet already taking her back towards the waiting room, towards Aria. "It's safe to assume you are on your way towards Rosewood correct?" she asked rhetorically, knowing he would be there as soon as possible. She heard a hum of agreement 'probably occupied with packing' she thought.
"Let me know when you get into town Tobes. Love ya." She said easily.
"Will do. Love you too Spence." He said before hanging up. Spencer shook her head as she put her phone in her pocket. How they lasted as long as they did as a couple would forever baffle her, he really was like another annoying yet over protective older brother. She walked slightly faster to her seat next to Aria who immediately grabbed her hand.
"He should be here sometime Tomorrow or early Sunday." She answered as everyone was looking at her, knowing they wanted to know what he had to say. "And no news on Jason" she added.
Everyone sighed at the news.
Emily pulled out her phone and began to scroll through her photos, I habit she picked up to keep her mind occupied. She paused at the most recent photo. It was a picture of her and Maddie cuddling on the couch, Maddie was laying with her back pressed up against the back of Aria's living room couch book in hand while Emily had her head on her chest sleeping a peaceful smile on both of their faces. It was truly a perfect picture. She would have to thank Hanna later for taking it.
'This is all my fault…' she thought as she looked back to the photo, 'I... WE just got her back. We need her. I need her.' She thought sadly.
"You talking to Paige Em?" Aria asked with a knowing Smile. It's the same smile she got when she thought about Spencer. Her eyes widened at her thoughts. 'Where the hell did that come from?' she thought to herself, shocked. She was saved from her thoughts by Hanna scoffing.
"Yeah, Paige, sure." Hanna said sarcastically. "Shouldn't you call your mom and let her know what's going on?" Hanna asked. Mainly to get Aria to stop asking Emily about Paige. Hanna knew that Paige was the farthest thing from Emily's mind at the moment. She knew that Maddie was head over heels for Emily, hell anyone with eyes could tell. She's pretty sure that Em likes her Maddie but she also really likes Paige.
Emily shot Hanna a small grateful smile as Aria got up to call her mom. All was quiet everyone in their own heads. Aria returned a few minutes later, her hand going straight to Spencer's. And that's how they stayed for the next hour. Holding hands and silent, waiting for news on someone they all loved.
The silence was broken as the Doctor looked around the room, blood on his navy scrubs.
"Spencer Hastings? Family of Madeline Cavanaugh?" He called out, his face betraying nothing.
Everyone jumped up
"I'm Spencer." Spencer introduced herself, holding out her hand to the Doctor.
"My name is Doctor Matthews" he introduced himself as he shook her hand. "Would you like to step outside to discuss your sister's condition?" he asked as he took in the group standing anxiously behind her.
Spencer shook her head, they were family. He nodded and gestured for them to take a seat.
"I'm not going to lie, there was a lot of blood when she came in. but that's common with head injuries. Luckily she was wearing a helmet and all she need was a few sutures and has a mild concussion." He began letting the better news sink in. "she also suffered some broken ribs that punctured her lung which is why she needed surgery. Luckily we were able to get in there before her lung collapsed and fixed everything with minimal damage for such a dangerous injury." He explained as he looked at the group of teens. "She is currently in recovery. You will be able to see her shortly. Is there any questions?" he asked politely knowing how hard hearing all of this could be. He waited a few minutes for the information to sink in and for the questions that usually came when a loved one was in the hospital.
Hanna raised her hand. The doctor gestured for her to go ahead.
"What the hell happened?" Hanna asked bluntly. She wanted answers and would waste no time on pleasantries, it wasn't exactly in her nature. The doctor cracked a smile at Hanna's crass words.
"According to the police report they Found Ms. Cavanaugh at the bottom of a hill pinned under her bike, there were no signs of an accident or any other vehicles on the road. The police believe that someone tampered with her breaks due to the slice they found in her break lines. The lack of breaks, going downhill at her speed caused her to go head over bike. Luckily she seems to have a thick head." The doctor explained. "I'll have a nurse come get you are able to go see her." He said as he made his way to the door. He left the group sitting in shock at the news. Her breaks had been tampered with. Someone wanted Maddie dead, and they almost succeeded.
Emily was the first to break, she let her tears finally fall. The relief, the fear finally hitting her. Spencer had the purest look of relief on her face, glad that she wasn't losing Maddie yet again.
"She's alive." Spencer uttered aloud to no one in particular. Everyone smiled, Maddie was ok.
Hanna started laughing
"The Doctor said Maddie had a thick head. He has no idea!" she said between chuckles. The rest of the group joining in knowing that Hanna was right. Maddie was stubborn. 'When I find whoever did this, they will wish they didn't.' Hanna thought to herself as she looked at her friends, her family finally having a moment of peace.
The group sat in peace and silence while they waited for a nurse. 20 minutes later the nurse from the reception desk walked towards them.
"You can see her now. Straight down this hall and it's the third door on the left. An orderly will be at the desk nearby if you have any questions or concerns." The nurse informed before turning and walking away.
"What a bitch." Hanna muttered aloud. Everyone chuckled knowing Hanna wasn't wrong, the nurse had been a bit brisk. Everyone sat for a minute.
"We should go in." Spencer said as she stood up and wiped any stray tears that might have unknowingly fell. Maddie always hated to see the people she cared for crying. Aria, Hanna and Caleb all stood up to see Maddie, Emily remained seated.
Hanna turned and looked at Emily before looking at Caleb and the others.
"You guys go on ahead. We will be right there." Hanna said with a small smile. Aria and Spencer looked from Emily to Hanna knowing that Emily needed a push to go see Maddie and Hanna was the one to give it. Caleb smiled and kissed Hanna's head before walking with Aria and Spencer towards Maddie's room.
Emily didn't look up when Hanna sat back down beside her. She couldn't help but feel guilty. 'She came to tell me something, and because of that she was on that stupid bike with no breaks.' She thought angrily. Part of her wants to know what Maddie wanted to tell her, but a bigger part of her just wanted Maddie to hug her and tell her everything was going to be ok. Emily was brought out of her thoughts when Hanna out her arm around her.
"Is she really going to be ok?" Emily asked her voice small and scared of what she would hear. But she knew Hanna was always honest.
"Em. You heard the Doc, she's just a little banged up, but she is going to be fine." Hanna happily reassured her best friend. Happy that her words were the truth not only for Maddie's sake but also Em's. 'She and Spence would be crushed if they lost her just as they got her back.' Hanna thought to herself as she pulled Emily closer.
"It's not your fault." Hanna muttered. Emily looked up in surprise and fear. Fear that it was her fault.
"It's not your fault. I see the doubt in your eyes Em, but it's not your fault." Hanna said reassuringly.
"But she wouldn't have been on that stupid bike if she hadn't come to see me!" Emily exclaimed sadly. Hanna sighed knowing that if something like this happened to Caleb she would blame herself too.
"Did you ever find out what she was there for?" Hanna asked, knowing that making Emily believe it wasn't her fault was a job for Maddie. Emily shook her head and moved from Hanna's embrace.
"I have no clue why she showed up. She was so nervous, she does that cute lip biting thing when she's nervous." Emily said in a daze "she was finally starting to open up and say what she came to when Paige showed up and she bolted." Emily said replaying the last time she saw Maddie in her head. 'She needs to open her eyes before it's too late.' She thought sadly as she watched Emily think of Maddie, a small smile unknowingly on the latter's face. It seems that Emily was finally starting to realize that her heart didn't truly lay with Paige.
"Maddie is down the hall alive and breathing." Hanna said as she stood up and looked down at Emily. "I'm going to go in there and tell her how happy I am that she is... you should to, tomorrow is never guaranteed. Not for us." Hanna stated grimly, knowing Emily needed the push. Hanna held out her hand for Emily.
"Together." Hanna said with a smile when Emily looked up and took Hanna's hand.
"Come on you can tell Maddie to get rid of that stupid bike." Hanna joked as she pulled Emily up and turned towards the hall that would lead them to their friends. She stopped short when she saw Paige and Ezra waking towards them.
'Like tonight couldn't get any worse.' Hanna thought sarcastically.
"What the hell are you guys doing here?" she said aloud as the two came closer. Paige never took her eyes off of Emily, standing slightly behind Hanna.
"We heard about Maddie and figured this is where you guys would be." Ezra explained as they came to a stop a few feet away. Hanna narrowed her eyes at the pair and nodded her head in acceptance. Not believing for a second that they were there because they cared for the girl in the hospital.
"Well Maddie is going to be fine, she's pretty banged up but alive." Hanna explained to the pair, not giving any details. Ezra nodded as he looked around the waiting room, undoubtedly looking for Aria. 'too bad she's to wrapped up in Spencer to care that you're here' Hanna thought to herself knowing that they wouldn't be together much longer if the looks Aria was giving Spencer were anything to go by.
"Aria's is with Spencer and Caleb in Maddie's room." Hanna informed the English teacher. Hanna could have sworn she saw a flash of jealousy before his face was calm and he nodded, knowing he would have to wait to see Aria. Hanna turned her eyes to Paige who was still looking at Emily like a wounded puppy. 'She better not do anything to upset Emily anymore' she thought to herself as they all stood in an awkward silence.
"So... was it an accident or and 'accident'" Ezra asked using quotation marks around the second term accident.
"The second one. Whoever did it will be in all types of pain when I find them." Hanna declared. Getting worked up just thinking about finding A for this. Paige smirked at Hanna's declaration. Hanna looked between Paige and Emily noting how Emily refused to look at Paige. Even with her face to the ground Hanna could see the tears welling in her eyes hearing them talk about Maddie.
"Look guys I know you came to see Emily and Aria but we really need to be with Maddie right now. We came really close to losing her tonight and it hasn't exactly hit us yet." Hanna started as she thought about how scared Spencer is and how Aria has been her rock knowing it hasn't hit the shorter girl yet. 'When are they going to pull their heads out of their asses? They are almost as bad as Maddie and Em.' Hanna thought to herself before she was interrupted by Paige.
"Em, babe how are you doing?" Paige asked softly reaching to pull her girlfriend into her arms. Emily took a step closer to Hanna, the hug she needed wasn't from Paige.
"Em? Why won't you talk to me? I said I was sorry about earlier." Paige said exasperated yet hurt, all she wanted to do was be there for her girlfriend, even if it was around Cavanaugh. She was still pissed that her time with Emily had been put off again because Maddie. 'Stupid Maddie Cavanaugh, had to show up and cause problems. We were happy damn it!' Paige thought angrily as she waited for some kind of response from her girlfriend.
Emily whipped her head towards Paige. Disbelief on her face.
"Why won't I talk to you? Are you kidding me? One of my best friends is laying in a hospital bed and all you care about is what you want!" Emily said, her voice rising with every word.
Hanna looked at Paige in surprise, she thought Paige would finally get how much Maddie meant to them, especially Em.
"I know you aren't dumb enough to start an argument in the hospital where our friend is laying." Hanna said in a deadly calm voice, she was not in the mood to hear about Paige's jealous insecurities.
"No she was just leaving." Emily said as she stepped forward. "I'll talk to you later Paige, right now I need to be with Maddie and the girls." Emily said with no room for argument. Paige sighed and nodded her head in defeat, knowing she wasn't going to get Emily to leave with her.
Ezra looked at Paige and knew his presence would probably fair the same reaction even if he and Aria were in a better spot. He knew how close the girls were and wasn't going to pick tonight to try and get in between them.
"Come on Paige we can comeback another time." Ezra said easily. "Tell Aria and Spencer we stopped by and that we are sorry to hear what happened." Ezra said as he and Paige turned and made their way back the way they came.
"You come here and try that crap again Paige and you'll wish you were the one in that bed." Hanna threatened knowing that Paige would always be jealous of Maddie and this wouldn't be the last argument her and Emily would have about it. But it would be the last one they had while Maddie was in the hospital, she would make sure of it.
Paige stopped and turned to look at Hanna her eyes narrowed in a glare at the blonde girl. 'Who the hell did she think she was?' Paige thought to herself as she nodded at Hanna and turned back and continued walking with Ezra.
Hanna looked at Emily and held her hand out once again for her best friend.
"Let's do this." Emily said as she took Hanna's hand. They started the short journey to where Maddie lay.
"You ready Em?" Hanna asked
"Not at all. You?" Emily asked as she turned to look at the blonde, knowing that Hanna and Maddie would be having a long talk.
Hanna shook her head.
"Not at all." She said looking at the door that led to their friend.
Emily took a deep breath before she stepped forward and opened the door. The sound of a steady heart beat greeted them.
