TRAINER OF A DIFFERENT CALIBER

Disclaimer: I don't own any part of the Pokémon franchises, just the ones I catch while I play the games.

Warning: This is mainly an OC story, which follows the anime a little bit, but takes place a couple of years before Ash begins his journey, and the characters from the show will only have like a brief appearance in this story.

Here is a heads up; I'm going to ignore the four attack limit rule because while it's good for the game, I find it pointless anywhere else.

Okay, those of you who need a reminder, including me, or those who skip ahead, here are the names of the three trainers and the Pokémon they have with them, x meaning with them now:

We find the trio going through Route 4, two days after the Mt. Moon incident, which would take them to Cerulean City. Right now they are having a nice little chat with each other.

"So when you two gain more than six pokémon, where would the extra pokémon go?" Will asked.

"Oh my older sister, Marsha, is a licensed pokémon breeder on Cinnabar and she's agreed to raise our any extra pokémon while I travel." Cindy explained, "She traveled all over the world and knows how to raise all kinds of pokémon."

"And in a way, she was the reason why Cindy got into coordinating." Jerome said, "Plus Marsha was getting tired of Cindy squeezing the pokémon in her care to death."

"That I can picture," Will said, causing the girl to blush in embarrassment, "And do you have any plans on how you are going to handle your first contest, Cindy?"

"No, I'm still trying to figure out what moves I want my pokémon to learn and how to combine them to help get past the qualifying round." Cindy said, "And with Cleffa, I need to rethink a few things."

"Well, we still have about at least a week and a half, so hopefully that would give you enough time to teach all of pokémon, even if you get any new ones, and gives you a chance to learn how to use them."

This was when a sandshrew, a pokémon that looks like a yellow armadillo, came up from a hole in the ground that it created. "Excuse me." Will said, while pulling out a pokeball and throwing it in the air, "Come on out Nidoran." The small purple pokémon came out when called.

Cindy gave a small pout because she wanted to catch it considering how cute she thought it was, "Oh come on Will, couldn't you have asked if any of us wanted to catch it first?" She asked.

After watching both pokémon use Dig to go underground, "What's wrong with the one in the bush over there?" Will counter-asked, while pointing to his left.

When Cindy saw said pokémon eating berries from the bush, she let out a loud squeal and ran towards it at a speed that would make the Flash proud, leaving a dust cloud in her wake. After reaching her target, Cindy picked it up and gave it a tight hug.

While watching one friend battling a sandshrew by using double kick to intercept said pokémon's rollout attack, and the other causing hers to blush because of the hug, "Why do I feel like a third wheel?" Jerome asked himself, when a slight rattle was heard. He turned around to see an ekans coiled into an attack position, "Well, better than being left out." He said, before calling out Geodude.

After putting her new pokémon in its pokeball, Cindy turned to watch her friends battle to gain new pokémon.

Will vs. Sandshrew

When Will released Nidoran, he knew that type advantage wasn't on his side entirely, but it's also a trainer's job to raise their pokémon to work through any disadvantages. When he watched as sandshrew dive into the ground, "Nidoran, use Dig." Will ordered, causing the pointy pokémon to leap and dive into the ground, both furiously digging into the ground.

A few seconds later, the ground shook before both pokémon jumped out of the ground and in separate directions. Just as sandshrew jumped and rolled its body into a ball, rolling into a Rollout attack. "Nidoran, leap to the side and use Double Kick." Said pokémon did as ordered and leapt into the other pokémon's side feet first, knocking it into a tree, "Now use Ice Beam."

The tip of Nidoran's horn gave off a white speck of light before firing multiple beams of ice towards the sandshrew. When struck, the pokémon was out. Pulling out an empty pokeball, "Go pokeball." Will said. After doing the whole capture thing, the ball vanished into thin air, on its way to Professor Oak's Lab.

"And now we have a new friend." Will said, before turning around to watch Jerome with his endeavor.

Jerome vs. Ekans

The first move was provided by ekans when it opened its mouth and launched a Poison Sting attack at Geodude, which was countered with Rock Throw. Ekans leaped at Geodude and wrapped its body around Geodudes's. "Geodude use Rollout." Jerome ordered.

Geodude grabbed ekans' neck and spun its body really fast along the ground, making itself look like a brown and purple boulder. A while later, the purple flew off, causing Geodude to stop its attack.

Looking to see ekans with its eyes turned into spirals and stars twirling over its head, indicating that it was pretty dizzy from that move. Not one to miss such an opportunity, "Pokeball go." Jerome said. After the ball captured the pokémon and vanished into thin air, "Well, now I have one more pokémon added to my collection."

This was when both Cindy and Will walked up to him, "Well, congratulations on the capture." Will said.

Cindy had a timid look on her face, "Yeah, congratulations," she said, "But you do know what's going to happen the next time we talk to my sister, right?"

Jerome grew pale at this, while Will asked "Why, what is going to happen?"

Somewhere in Cinnabar Island, a loud screech could be heard all over, which was followed by a lot things breaking, most of them being dinner plates.

Back with the group, "You don't want to know." Was the answer from both of his traveling companions.

Shrugging his shoulders, knowing when to let things go, "Well, let's get going we should be able to make it to Cerulean City by sundown." Will said, while they continued their journey

And just as he said, by the time they reached Cerulean City, the sun was already setting in the mountains behind them. Right now Cindy had the map for the city so that they can locate the Pokémon Center, while the streets are filled with a few people heading home for dinner or some other activity.

Things are going smoothly when *click**boom* Mew decided to come out and hitch a ride on Will's head. While the girls, younger, older and same age as them, were looking at both Mew and Will, the boys were giving off slight smirks, thinking Will is a weakling because of the pokémon on his head. The adults on the other hand were having mixed opinions, one of them feeling like Mew seemed familiar to them.

"Comfortable up there?" Will asked, while giving Mew a small scratch behind the ears, which it loved; before he put it back down, turning towards some of the nearby residents, "Excuse me, but where is the Pokémon Center?"

One of the girls was too anxious to answer, this one a couple of years younger, with hearts in her eyes, "Down the road by four blocks, on the left side."

"Thank you." Will said, with Jerome giving the girl a nod of thanks.

"Yes, thank you." Cindy said as she put away the map.

About fifteen minutes later, they finally reached their destination. While entering the center, Will picked up Mew from off of his head and carried it in his arms. If the girls weren't falling in love with him yet, now they adored him now because of not only of the cute pokémon he has with him, but also how he was treating the pokémon. Along with his dark, mysterious look and picturing how he would look in a few years, Will was in danger of having a fan club develop sometime down the road.

When the trio walked up to the desk, the Nurse Joy looked up to greet them, "Hello everyone." Joy greeted them, until she seen the pokémon in Will's arms that only a small few heard about in legends. "Oh my, is that a mew?"

"Yes it is." Will said, while handing it into Joy's arms, "I need you to give this little fellow a through exam due to what happened during our first encounter."

"Why, what happened?" Joy asked.

"Team Rocket." Will said, which got her attention. After they explained what happened at Mt. Moon and what they did to help heal Mew, "And even though Mew seems to be healthy, I would still like it if I got a professional opinion to be safe." Then he pulled out his remaining five pokeballs, all with pokémon inside, "And also to give the rest of my pokémon a checkup."

"Mine too." Cindy said, pulling out all six of her pokeballs.

"And mine." Jerome said, doing the same.

"Oh of course," Nurse Joy said, while using one hand to bring out three trays from below the counter, while calling out for that Center's chansey over, "Prepare one of the exam rooms for me, please, Chansey?"

"Chansey!" Chansey happily replied before leaving.

After stacking the trays on top of each other, "Okay, everything should be ready within the next hour." Joy said as she left to get their pokémon examined.

After stepping aside in case anybody else walks in, "Well, I don't know about you two, but I'm going to grab a shower and then grab some dinner." Will said, before walking away.

The other two just looked at each other, shrug their shoulders, and decided to follow his example. While the trio are hungry, the urge to feel clean override the need to eat.

After an hour was spent freshening up and getting their stuff ready for the Laundromat, all three are in the dining area, enjoying a nice pizza together. "So are you going to call Professor Oak and tell him about you catching Mew?" Cindy said.

"Considering how late it is, it can wait until morning." Will said, "Right now I'm just going to let my pokémon rest for tonight." He then turned towards Jerome, "And maybe by then, your friend Marsha should be able to cool off when you give her a call."

"Oh she'll cool down alright, but Marsha never lets you forget any wrong done to her." Jerome said, "And right now I'm hoping she can forgive me when I send two of my pokémon to her."

"And I'm still trying to decide which pokémon I want to send home." Cindy said, with a sad look, thinking about being apart from her pokémon after just catching them not too long ago, "Anyway, are you two going to challenge the gym leader tomorrow?"

"No, since you watched the two of us battled, I'll wait until after your contest is over." Will said, "Just to be a good friend."

"Yeah, same here," Jerome said, "We've been friends for years, Cindy, and considering how patient you have been when we started out, I owe it to you to try and be a friend in return."

Feeling touched that she was traveling with two gentlemen, although Jerome would try to deny it, "So what are you two going to do till then?" Cindy asked.

"Well, if you guys want to come along, I'm going to head north up Route 24 & 25 and get some training and a few new pokémon along the way, basically a grass type and a water type that can be used on land." Will said, "Plus that's where Bill has his cottage."

"Who's Bill?" Cindy asked, while Jerome gave him an curious look.

"Oh he's a friend of Professor Oak," Will explained, "Bill (was dangerously close to adding Nye as the last name) is a pokémon researcher and inventor. To put it simply, he is the one who designed and invented the tools that we use, like the pokeballs and the teleportation link that we use to transfer pokémon."

"Really?" Jerome asked, "In that case, I will come along."

"Me too." Cindy said.

"Well in that case, after we collect our pokémon and handle our phone calls in the morning, we need to stop by a Poke Mart and stock up on supplies before we leave." Will said.

After finishing off the pizza, the trio separated and did their own thing for about an hour or two, just hanging out and talking to the people in center, those who live in the area who stopped by to have their pokémon taken care of and other people like them who are using the place as a pit stop on their journey through Kanto. When exhaustion hit, they turned in for the night.

Here is the latest chapter, and it's going to take longer to update all my stories because I've just bought a Nintendo 3DS and right now I'm playing Pokémon Y, while also trying to figure out the best angle to enjoy the whole 3D effect. Anyway, looks like there might be a Kalo edition of this series after all if I keep going. Anyway, hope Ash brings Charizard and Gible into Kalos for Mega Evolution. Read and Review.
