Courtney Krieger-Asagiri tried to fight back the tears welling up in her eyes as she tried to remain strong sitting in a waiting area near her wife's room. But it was nothing compared to the deep sorrow she was feeling, she knew this day would come as her wife was sick for some time and their doctor diagnose Priss was dying last year and that she would have more or less 6 months. When Courtney heard the news she was devastated but she tried to prepare herself for the worst, but there was no way one can be truly prepared. It was ironic that she's seen Priss in the hospital from being wounded in combat and she always had faith in Priss' as a fighter.
"Momma?" A voice broke Courtney from her thoughts to look up to see her daughter Rachel with her girlfriend, and lover, Katherine Stingray in tow.
"Rachel. Katherine. I'm glad you two came." She sadly smiled at the two.
"How could we not, Aunt Courtney. We knew Aunt Priss was sick for some time, and Capt. Sheen gave us emergency leave." Katherine answered. She thanked Capt. Emma Sheen who was commander of the Knight Sabers. Much like Priss years ago she broke the Knight Sabers into two squads: Alpha team and Bravo Team; Rachel and Katherine were on the Alpha team. "We're family."
Soon Sylia Stingray came out of Priss' room after conferring with her doctors; dejectedly she approached Courtney and her two nieces. "Courtney, Rachel. I'm sorry, she doesn't have much time left. If you want to say your good-byes, do so." Sylia said; memories soon were being dredged up in Sylia's mind because it harkened back when Clayton was with her when her Uncle was dying all those years ago. Escorting the two into Priss' room. Courtney felt like sobbing uncontrollably but she fought back the urge as she took her wife's hand.
"Hey babe…" she whispered
"My love." She answered back, "This is not how I wanted us to part."
"I know… Courtney… you made me happier than I could ever imagine before I met you and Sylia… I was looking for a reason to die… but with you… Rachel… I had reasons to live…." Priss' face grew sadder as she stared into her wife's soft brown eyes. "I'll never be able to look into those brown eyes of yours. The same eyes that could calm me down when I'm angry, those same eyes that cause me to fall in love."
Tears began streaming down her eyes as she held on Priss' hand tighter. "Priss…"
"Courtney… it's gonna be tough but I need you to be strong for me… I don't want to mourn for me for the rest of your life."
"I don't know… Priss you mean everything to me. I'll try."
"I'll always love you Courtney. If there is an afterlife, I'll be waiting for you."
Courtney smiled as leaned over and kissed her wife once last time. "You're the only woman I've ever loved. I'll always be your wife."
Courtney quietly walked out she didn't want Priss see her cry. Then Rachel approached her mom. "Hi mom."
Priss smiled with pride at her daughter. "Hey kid, my little girl's all grown up." Priss thought back to the 5 year old she and Courtney adopted and watched her grow up from a scared, abused girl to confident hell raiser on the reformed GI Joe team and the Knight Sabers. She was her daughter. "Ray, I need you do something for me…"
"Anything Mom, you know that…"
"Your momma… it's gonna be tough for her without me around. If she needs you, be there for her. But you have your own life and Kat… treat her right."
"You got it, Mom. Thank you for everything and I'm proud to be your daughter. Also I was assigned a codename in GI Joe."
"What's that?"
"Wolf." Rachel smiled, she watched as Priss smile grew bigger that her daughter got her old codename.
"I love you Rachel, and I'm very proud you."
"Same here Mom."
Rachel hanged back as Sylia stood on the other side of Priss' bed. Priss looked to her old commander, her sister-in-arms, her friend. "Hey, Boss." Priss cracked.
Sylia lightly chuckled at being called 'Boss,' she hated the nickname at the start but she can never picture Priss calling her anything else. Sylia seen Priss close to death before but today the grim reaper was going to collect. "I guess this is good-bye, Priss. You may have been a pain in my ass… but I've always been proud of you… you turned your life around; you've overcome so many obstacles and you manage to find happiness with your wife and daughter."
"Couldn't… done it…without…ya…Boss." Priss struggled as night was slowly falling upon her.
"I love you, Priss. You will be always be a sister to me…" Sylia said but she got no response from Priss as she had passed away. Leaning over she softly kissed the still warm skin of her forehead. Before leaving she rang for the nurse. Heading for the door, she took Rachel who started crying.
"Priss?" Courtney asked while Rachel approached her and wrapped her arms around her momma and cried. Getting her answer Courtney broke down and let out a torrent of mournful sobs.
Keeping a respectful distance, Sylia showed no outward emotion except for the tears running from her eyes. She hadn't felt this way since Linna and Clayton died. Soon Katherine approached her aunt after getting off the phone with her mother, Nene, was out of the country with her father. "Aunt Sylia? It's okay to cry." She said as she comforted her aunt. To Sylia, the words were something Clayton would tell her and the dam broke, Sylia cried.
"Out of all my Knight Sabers I'm going to miss Priss the most, Katherine." She sobbed. "I'll never forget her." Sylia also cried for Courtney who was now a widow.
Some weeks later after Priss' funeral.
Rachel remained behind after the funeral service, she was dressed in her Class-A uniform out respect for Priss' service to the Army. By all rights being a Medal of Honor recipient Priss could have been buried with full honors at Arlington but she requested if anything happen to Courtney she would want to be buried next to her, and Courtney had the same feelings; even in death they did not want to be apart. But her mom was her inspiration to join the Army, now with her primary motivation gone she was staring to question to remain… she took a leave absence not only to think it over but to help her momma grieve. "Thinking of leaving?" a voice spoke out breaking her from thoughts and staring at her mom's grave. Turning around, she saw her Aunt Sylia.
"Mom was the reason why I joined. I was proud of her service and I wanted to live up to it. But now I have doubts…. If I want to stay.
Taking Rachel by the shoulder, she guided her to a bench not too far away from Priss' grave. "Rachel, can I tell you a story?"
"This is new, Mom and Momma said everything about you is classified…" Rachel smiled as Sylia was volunteering information.
"In some ways that is true. When I was your age… I'd faced the same problem. My uncle Robert succumbed to kidney disease. He was my inspiration to join the army and he was my sponsor to West Point. When he died I was going to be transferred to Benning for Ranger School, I had doubts of continuing."
"What changed your mind?"
"A wonderful man named Clayton Abernathy. " Sylia said as tears formed in her eyes at his memory. "He inspired me to continue. He was my friend. My mentor. A father. He was my commanding officer in the GI Joe team. I owe him a lot."
"I don't know what to do?"
"The decision is your, Rachel, if you want to honor your mother's memory I say stay in. Besides, I think Katherine would appreciate if you were around when she needs a door or two kicked in. I know I was glad to have to your mom when I needed a door kicked in."
Rachel chuckled, "Yeah, mom was pretty badass!"
"She was the best at what she did. Come on, Courtney could use some company."
The two got up, but Rachel headed to her mom's grave. Looking at the headstone, she smiled. I'm gonna stay in, Mom. I hope I'll be just as badass as you. I love you. Turning away she followed her Aunt Sylia back to her car.
