CHAPTER 14 - YOU'RE ALL I HAVE LEFT
Should I go see if Mindy is alright? I must of asked myself that question at least a dozen times first in my head before deciding I would. I knew Mindy was strong but I honestly didn't know how she was going to take this latest devastating news. I knocked on her bedroom door and waited for an answer which never came.
"Mindy it's me can I come in?" I asked aloud.
Still there was no answer.
"Mindy I'm coming in" I told her.
I opened Mindy's bedroom door to find her sitting on her bed staring blankly into space. I closed the door behind me and waited for a second to see if she responded to me being there, she didn't.
"I'm so sorry Mindy I don't really know what else to say, but we will get this bastard for what he's done I promise you"
Mindy slowly turned to face me and the expression on her face was blank almost empty of emotion, it was like she was in shock then she softly began to speak.
"I had started to remember so much about him, real things like how he looked after me, cared for me, loved me like his own daughter"
"I know, he loved you very much" I simply replied.
"This wasn't supposed to happen, not to Marcus, he was the only family I had left" Mindy sadly admitted.
I stood silent because truth be told I didn't know what to say to her. What Mindy said was right though Marcus may not have been blood but he was the last real family she had. I went over to her and sat beside her on the bed.
"It might not be the same but you'll always have me" I reminded her.
Mindy turned her cheek towards me and I saw tears streaming down her face. I softly wiped them away with my thumb as she stared almost like she was lost back at me.
"I'm lucky to have you" Mindy quietly said.
I smiled at her and as I did she grabbed my arm and placed it around herself whilst at the same time nestling her head under my shoulder.
"I'm going to kill that fucker Dave I don't know how yet but one way or another I will kill him" Mindy told me as I continued to hug her.
"And I'll be with, just like always" I informed her.
We sat on Mindy's bed with me hugging her in silence for the next few minutes. I don't think either of us wanted to move, moving meant we had to think about what we were going to do next and I don't think either of us wanted to do that just yet. Eventually however Mindy sat up from under my shoulder and wiped some more tears away from her face.
"I'm going to try get some sleep, it probably wont happen but I cant manage anything else right now" Mindy explained.
"Of course, you know where I am if you need me" I told her as I headed for her bedroom door.
"Dave!" Mindy called out.
"Yeah" I answered turning back to face her.
"Thank you" She simply said with tears still in her eyes.
"Anytime" I told her as I exited her the room.
I went back through to the sofa area which Chris was still occupying.
"Take it she's upset" Chris remarked in my direction.
"What the hell do you think?" I snapped back at him.
"Ok chill I'm just saying" Chris replied.
"Well don't just say" I told him.
"Dave listen, when my dad ran things he had a number of cops in his pocket but there was only one he went to when he wanted something serious done" Chris explained.
"Ok who?" I asked suddenly intrigued.
"Detective Vic Gigante, he's as dirty as they come and I'll guarantee you if anyone's on Mastema's payroll its that slimy piece of shit" Chris informed me.
I nodded slowly taking in everything Chris had told me. We knew some of the cops who took Mastema were dirty but if this Gigante was the top man so to speak I guess Kick Ass and Hit Girl would have to pay him an unexpected visit.
"Do you have this Gigante's address?" I asked Chris.
"No, but I can get it" he answered.
"Good do it" I told him.
That night I awoke at about 2am, with everything that had happened I was finding it hard to sleep. God knows how Mindy was doing, I wondered if she got any sleep at all. I decided to go get myself a drink of water and as I entered the kitchen I noticed the light was on. Mindy was making herself a sandwich so I guess she was finding it hard to sleep after all.
"I was just thinking about you" I told her as I entered.
"Really? Well I hoped you enjoyed it" She replied.
"No, I was wondering if you managed to get any sleep in the end because I'm finding it hard to that's all" I corrected her.
"I nodded off for a little while which surprised me but not for long" Mindy admitted.
She took a big bite out of her rather oversized sandwich and began to speak.
"We need to act fast, I'm not letting that son of a bitch get away with what he's done" Mindy announced with a mouth full.
"I'm already on it, Chris identified the detective who is most likely working for Mastema, once he has his address we can make our move" I informed her hoping the news would cheer her up.
"What's his name?" She coldly asked me.
"Vic Gigante" I replied.
Mindy said nothing at first she was clearly in deep thought then her expression changed and I saw an almost sinister look spread across her face, god only knows what she had in mind.
"The sooner we get that address the better, tell Chris to get a fucking move on" Mindy ordered.
"I will" I told her.
Mindy's dark sinister expression slowly faded away and as it did she looked at me with a nervous smile and said goodnight before heading back to her room.
"Goodnight" I replied.
Once back in my own bed I noticed I had a missed call on my cell phone. 'Someone's trying to get in touch with me pretty late' I thought to myself. I checked to see who it was and saw it was Marty. I decided to ring him back straight away.
"Hey Marty I missed your call what's up?" I asked him.
"Dave I'm glad you called back I was about to try ringing you again. Listen it's about Todd, he's been back from college a day or so visiting his family and last night we hung out but on his way home he was jumped"
"What? Is he ok?" I asked concerned.
"He's not good they took his wallet and gave him a good beating but the doctors say he'll be ok eventually, I'm at the hospital now with his parents" Marty informed me.
"Fuck! Ok I'm on my way" I told him.
I hung up and quickly got dressed, I headed towards the main exit when Mindy suddenly appeared.
"Going somewhere?" She asked.
"Marty just rang me, a friend of mine Todd got mugged earlier he's in hospital" I told her.
"Shall I come with you?" She asked slightly more concerned now.
"No it's ok just keep on at Chris to get us that address tomorrow, " Like I needed to remind her.
"Dave be careful you're all I have left" Mindy sadly admitted.
I saw the sadness in her face so I went over and hugged her.
"I'll be fine I promise" I reassured her.
I felt Mindy's grip around me tighten slightly as if she didn't want to let go. Of course I didn't want to leave especially after everything that had happened but Todd was my friend and I had to go see him. I reluctantly pulled myself away from Mindy and left her standing alone as I headed out.
