Chapter 14:
"I need you to help me break out." Catherine says plainly.
"I am never going to help you again. Never."
"Oh, but you will Morgan. You see you already are just by being here."
"I don't understand."
"You're getting me out today." She says smiling.
"I am never doing that. Catherine you are going to stay here for the rest of your life."
"With you here, they have increased the security." She says ignoring my comment.
"That sounds like a bad thing." I say.
"Not when they work for me." I shot her a confused look and she smiles. I hear the door being opened and my heart skips a beat finally.
"Agent Michaels…" I say to him when he slowly steps out of the room. His white shirt is covered in droplets of blood and ripped in several places. My eyes instantly shot down to his hands and I see them gripping a small gun. "What are you doing?"
"Get over there." He says as he levels the gun to my head. I quickly move to where he guides me and he unlocks the door so Catherine can get out.
"See Morgan. I told you."
"They're going to catch you again."
"Who? Rachel and Abbigail? They aren't looking so good right now."
"What did you do?" I ask her fearing for the answer.
"Nothing they wouldn't have done to me. Now, we're leaving."
"No." I say as she tries to grab onto my arm. "I am not going with you."
"Please Morgan, I know you want out of that hell. Abigail will never love you as much as she loves Cammie, and neither will Rachel for that matter. They've replaced you. They forgot about you."
"They even let you come here knowing that there was a mole on the inside. They didn't love you. They wanted information from her." Michaels says looking over at Catherine.
"I am still never ever going to come with you." I say trying to push the idea aside. She kidnapped me. She hurt me.
"Leave her." Michael says trying to push Catherine out the door.
"They found you. Abigail saw you in your school dance recital. The one where you were the sugarplum fairy, because Haley McCollum got the flue. She recognized you immediately. She even stayed for the whole thing. Remember her? She sat in the front row, and talked to you. I was so worried that she would take you back, but she didn't. She just left."
Flashback
I pear out from behind the curtain. The audience is packed. People are even standing in the back so they can see the show. I try to scan the audience looking for my mom and dad.
"Abigail!" I hear my dad yell. He's waving his arms and standing up like a complete idiot. I tuck the curtain close and run out through the stage door.
"Hey Honey." My dad says as he moves to let me sit on his lap.
"Haley is sick!" I almost scream joyfully.
"Oh…"
"That means I am the fairy, duh!" I say motioning to his costume.
"Congratulation baby!" He says questioningly as he lifts me up.
"That means I can dance with the older girls, like Emma and Claire." I say smiling.
"That's great! Make sure you tell Haley to feel better." He says as I run backstage. I turn back to yell something at him, but I run right into a lady's knees.
"Sorry Honey!" She says. She smiles down at me and she looks so familiar. Now I know it was my mom.
"Sorry." I say looking up at her.
"What fairy are you Mor-Honey?"
"I am in the sugar plum fair dance with the older girls."
"Really? You're so young."
"I know. I'm only 5."
"Abigail, don't you have to be on stage?" I hear my dad says and I turn around. He's glaring at the woman behind me. He grabs onto my arm and pushes me behind him. I slowly start to walk away.
"You need to leave." I hear my father says violently.
"That's my daughter!" The lady screams back quietly.
"Not anymore. If you ruin this, she is going to go back to Catherine. Do you really want that? She's safe and happy with me."
"There is no way in hell she will ever leave with you again. Morgan come here." She says waving at me. The name sound familiar and I look behind me to make sure that she is talking to me.
"She's been wiped, Abigail, she doesn't remember any of you."
"How could you? Jack she is my kid. How could you let them do it to her?" She says as tears start to weld up in her eyes.
"She was your kid Abigail. Catherine didn't do it. I did. It's not the way that you think."
"What exactly did you do, Jack?"
"It was just like at Gallagher. It was a drink, Abigail. I would never hurt her."
"It doesn't matter Jack; She's leaving with me." The lady tries to walk towards me, but my dad blocks her and pulls something out of his pocket. Its metal and shiny.
"You're going to threaten me now, Jack? After everything I've done for you? For your wife?"
"Leave, Abigail."
"Or what? You're going to shoot me?" He takes the object and pushes it into her stomach and swiftly guides her away from the crowd still arguing. I can't make out what they are saying. Something about England?
"Abigail?" I hear the director call for me. "Were ready to start ok?"
"Ok." I says softly as I take her hand and she leads me back to the stage.
"Oh you do remember. Didn't they tell you? They saw you multiple times. Your biological father even visited you on your first day of kindergarten. I wonder why they didn't tell you that?" Catherine says smugly.
"Alpha team is in position." Agent Michaels says to her.
"It's now or never, Baby. Are you coming?" Catherine asks me.
"I..I…no." I say surely.
"Really?"
"Yes. I am never going to go with you again." I say growing more confident. I hear a loud bang and Catherine and Michaels instantly look towards the exit.
"Leave her." He says trying to convince Catherine to go.
"Go on ahead. I'll catch up." She tells him and he quickly exits the room.
"Why aren't you leaving? Didn't you want to escape?" I ask her. This is wrong. Why would she stay behind?
"My plan doesn't work if you're with them. It only works if you're with me."
"I'm not coming with you." I say backing up against the wall.
"I know." She says as she pulls a gun out from behind her back. I feel my breath catch in my throat.
"Catherine…." I say quietly.
"I can't have you helping them in any way." She says as she cocks the gun. I feel my heart rate start to increase and hot tears run down my checks.
"I won't tell them what we talked about. I swear."
"I know you won't, but I can't have you telling them any more of our secrets. You see Abigail was hoping that this meeting would get you to remember what I tortured you for. You see the thing is they have no idea why I took you or why I am going to take Cammie."
"Cammie?" I say trying to get her to talk more.
"When I had you, you gave us more information than we expected, but it poked more holes in Cameron's story. I have been trying for ages to iron them out, but I just can't. I think I need to have another talk with her." She says as she levels the gun to my head. I flinch and I feel her push the cool metal against my scalp.
"You were my favorite you know. I loved you more than I loved my own son. I always thought I should have had daughter, but little girls can be so pesky."
"Why are you doing this then?"
"Turn around." She tells me and I do. I feel the tears start to flow harder now.
"The ambulance response time is 1 minute and 45 seconds Morgan. You'll live." She takes the gun off my head and pushes it into the small of my back. I hear the sound of a gunshot, but nothing hurts. I feel hot liquid spill down from my back and Catherine pushes me forward.I take a lot of deep breaths as I turn around. The pain shoots through my entire body, but I'm still alive.
"Why?" I say looking up at her. "Why did you….?"
I can't seem to formulate my question. Catherine helps me turn over onto my back. She opens my shirt a little and checks on the wound. She pushes down on it and I yelp out in pain.
"Push here like this." She tells me as she moves my hands to cover the wound. I hear a lot more gunshots and Catherine looks towards the door. She starts to walk towards the door and I raise the gun to aim it at her.
"Wait! What am I supposed to do?" I say, but she doesn't listen. I hear the door slam shut behind her, and a lot more fighting in the hallway.
45 seconds. She said the response time was 1 minute and 45 seconds. Why does it feel like I have been waiting here for hours then? I hear another key being entered and the door flies open.
"Morgan. Its ok." I hear Agent Lynn says as she rushes towards me.
"She shot me." I say stupidly. Agent Lynn pushes my hands out of the way and replaces them with her own. She pushes down a lot harder than I was and I try to push her off of me.
"I know it hurts, Morgan. Try to relax."
"We were talking, and then she said that the cameras were turned off. I heard a loud bang and then Agent Michaels came in. They were working together. He helped her get out, and they wanted me to come with them, but I said no. Catherine said that I couldn't help you, and then she shot me in the back." I say trying to spit out what happened all at once.
"Ok. Its ok. Relax" She says trying to calm me down.
"Am I going to die?"
"No. you're going to be ok. It looks like it missed your spine. There is just a lot of blood." She says. I sit up a little bit and see that my white shirt is almost completely soaked in my blood and so is Lynn's.
"Rebecca!" I hear Mr. Solomon yell.
"In here! Morgan's been shot. Medical is 1 minute out." She says looking down at her watch.
"45 seconds." I say softly.
"What?"
"Catherine said 45 seconds."
"Joe!" She yells out the door.
"Here." He says as he rushes towards me. He opens up a first aid kit and replaces Lynn's jacket with a fresh piece of gauze.
"Is it bad?" I ask again.
"No. It's not that bad." I hear Mr. Solomon lie and he turns towards Lynn. I rest my head back down against the floor and try to breath.
"Where's my mom?"
"She's coming. Morgan, stay awake. She's coming." Mr. Solomon tells me. My eyes feel heavy and it takes a lot more energy to keep them open.
"Lynn get the paramedics." I hear Mr. Solomon say, but it sounds distorted to me.
"Morgan! Morgan!" He says and I blink several times. "Good girl. Tell me what happened."
"I was taking to her."
"Mmh." He says as he opens more gauze pieces. He throws the used ones against the trashcan in the room.
"She bragged about getting out, then Agent Michaels came in and opened the door for her." I say and I hear the door open a couple more times.
"Did you clean the wound?" I hear a paramedic ask.
"I only had hand sanitizer and gauze."
"This is going to hurt her." He says and I hear a bottle opening. "Rebecca can you hold her head still?"
I feel Lynn's cold hands touch my ears and I open my eyes.
"This is going to hurt for a couple of seconds ok?" I hear his voice say. I see the bottle in his hand and instantly remember the feeling of the antiseptic.
"No…no." I say trying to push him off of me. I feel the liquid land against my skin and it burns like some just poured acid into my wound.
"Stop. Stop." I say crying harder.
"Ok. Ok. Morgan were done." I hear Mr. Solomon say.
"Done?" I repeat.
"Yeah." Lynn says and I feel my eyes close again.
"No Morgan." She says shaking my head and I open them.
"Morgan!" I hear Rachel's voice say. I look over and see her face all bloody and beaten up.
"What happened to you?" I softly ask her.
"Nothing. You're ok." She says looking down at my wound.
"Where is my mom?"
"She's here."
"Hey Baby. You're ok." She says as she touches my hair. I see tears start to form in her eyes.
"Where you at my dance recital? I was a fairy. It was at St. Thomas Cathedral. I think I remember you." I ask her, and her face changes.
"We need to get her to a hospital." I hear a different man say.
"Morgan, we're going to give you something for the pain." Before I can object, I feel a slight pinch in my arm and my eyes flutter close.
