A/N: I wrote this story a while ago, so it wasn't really my best work. I'm going to be editing it and adding more. So, for old readers, I hope you like the revised version. For new readers, thanks for reading and feel free to leave your opinion of the story. I just ask that you don't be rude and nasty in your review. Other than that, enjoy the fanfic!
Note: Just for the sake of this story, I'll be pretending that Mai and Serenity are the same age as Téa.
Disclaimer: Well, 14 chapter later and I still don't own YuGiOh.
"Sorry I'm late," Téa said as she entered the dance studio. Putting her bag down, she turned to her dance troop and was surprised to see only one person there. "Where is everyone?"
"We're still waiting for them. Mai said she and Serenity will be here in 15 minutes and Emi said that she'll be here in a few minutes," her friend, Hikari, replied and Téa nodded.
"That's fine. I guess the two of us can just warm up for now," she said and Hikari nodded. Just as Téa moved to stretch, the door burst open and their other friend Emi ran in.
"What's wrong?" Téa asked as the girl ran in, squealing excitedly.
"We got it!" Emi exclaimed and Téa gave her a puzzled look.
"What exactly did we get?" Téa asked, her eyebrows knitted together.
Inhaling deeply, Emi explained, "I got us an audition!"
Immediately, Téa's eyes grew wide and she asked, "really? That's amazing! Where and when?"
"Tomorrow at 3 o'clock. And it's for, you won't believe it, KaibaCorp!" she yelled and Téa's face immediately froze. Hikari, however, didn't notice and joined in Emi's excitement, jumping and squealing in excitement.
"What did we miss?" a voice asked as the door opened and Mai strolled in, Serenity following behind.
Turning towards Mai, Emi yelled, "we got an audition!"
"That's wonderful!" Serenity exclaimed with a smile and Mai nodded. Looking over, she noticed the look on Téa's face and her face instantly sobered.
"Téa," she walked over to the brunette, "what's wrong? Aren't you excited?"
"Umm, yea, I'm excited but," Téa paused and bit her lower lip.
"But?" Mai prompted her and Téa mumbled something.
"What was that?" Mai asked and Téa sighed before she replied, "the audition is for KaibaCorp."
Immediately, Mai's eyes grew wide and she shook her head.
"No way!" she breathed and Téa nodded. "Well, are we going to do it or not? Because, I vote no."
With a resigned sigh, Téa nodded and said, "I know. I don't want to do it either."
"What do you mean we won't do it?" Emi suddenly asked and Mai turned to glare at the girl.
"Clearly, you don't know what an asshole Seto Kaiba is," Mai replied, watching as Emi immediately shook her head.
"It doesn't matter. We won't be working with him," Emi retorted before she turned towards Téa and said, "come on. Do you know how many strings I had to pull for them to even consider giving us an audition? You can't just throw this opportunity away, Téa."
"I know, Emi, but," Téa paused and looked at her friend's face. "Kaiba is a huge jerk. I'd rather dance on broken glass than dance for him."
"That basically translates to no, Emi," Mai piped up but Emi promptly ignored her and returned her attention to Téa.
"But, you're the one who said that we need to get out there and get more attention. There are sure to be big and influential people there who might notice us," Emi reminded her and Téa groaned. Sensing that she was breaking through to the brunette, Emi continued, "besides, we won't be working with him per se. We'll be working with the event coordinator. We'll most likely never see him."
"I know, but," Téa sighed again and shook her head. "Emi, you don't know him like I do. He's the biggest asshole you'll ever meet."
"By the way, I heard that you punched him in the face. Is that true, Téa?" Mai suddenly asked, looking at Téa, who flushed slightly. "No way! You punched Seto Kaiba?"
"He was being an ass," Téa grumbled, earning a laugh from Mai, who immediately exclaimed, "It's about time someone punched him! Good job, Téa!"
Rolling her eyes slightly, Téa returned her attention to Emi and asked, "now do you understand why I can't work with him? He's honestly the biggest asshole you'll ever meet."
Narrowing her eyes, Emi said, "that shouldn't be why you say no. Besides, the pay is amazing."
Immediately, Téa's head perked up and she hesitantly asked, "really? How much?"
"More than enough," Emi smiled and Téa sighed, knowing that she'd been beaten.
"Fine," she grumbled, "we'll go to the audition."
With that, she turned and made her way back to the bar to stretch. As she did, she was screaming at herself. The last thing that she wanted to do was work for Kaiba's company but, at the moment, she didn't really have a choice. After her mother's illness a few months before, she'd had a lot of expenses between her college tuition and her mother's hospital bills. As it was, she was already working two jobs to support herself and her mother, something that she had been doing for almost three years since her father had walked out on the family.
As much as she wanted to, she couldn't afford to be picky. Money was money, even if it came from Seto Kaiba.
"We selected a dance group, Mr. Kaiba," Kaiba looked up to see his events coordinator enter his office. He looked at the woman and nodded for her to approach him.
"And who did you decide on, Mayumi?" he asked and watched as the woman's eyes grew wide.
"Megumi, sir," she replied.
"What?" he asked, looking at the woman.
"My name, sir. It's Megumi," the woman replied and Kaiba simply stared at her, not responding. Clearing her throat, she looked down at her file and produced a piece of paper. Just as she handed him the paper, the doors of his office burst open and Mokuba strolled in.
"Seto, we have a little problem with the gala," Mokuba said and Kaiba set the paper down without looking at it.
"What?" he asked and Mokuba replied, "well, it seems that Mr. Noriko has a strong interest in ancient Egypt, so the Board decided that we should change the theme of the gala to ancient Egypt."
"What?!" Kaiba growled and Mokuba nodded. Sighing, Kaiba closed his eyes and leaned back in his seat. He had been trying to secure a partnership with Tadao Noriko for a few months now and was hoping to close the deal during the gala. That meant that if Noriko liked ancient Egypt, then it was in his best interest to make the theme of the gala ancient Egypt. However, he was cringing inside. Why did everything always have to come back to ancient Egypt?
"I'll go meet with the Board right now," Kaiba said as he stood, the paper forgotten on his desk.
"But, Mr. Kaiba, the dancers," Megumi was saying but he simply waved her away and said, "just hire them and tell them the new theme," before he left the room.
"Well, I hope you're happy," Mai said, glaring over at Emi, who shrank back under the blonde's look.
"How was I supposed to know that they would change the theme to ancient Egypt?" she asked in an exasperated tone.
"It doesn't matter. How the hell are we supposed to dance? How did ancient Egyptians dance?" Mai asked, shaking her head as she turned towards Téa.
Téa, however, hadn't heard a word and was instead staring down at the letter, her mind racing. Why was the theme suddenly ancient Egypt?
Confusion rolled through her as she thought about her dreams and everything that was now happening. What were the chances that she was to dance at Kaiba's ancient Egypt themed gala?
"Téa, are you listening?" she tuned back in to hear Mai asking her.
Sighing, she nodded and replied, "we don't exactly have a choice. We already signed the contract. There's no backing out."
Letting out a groan, Mai turned and shot Emi another nasty look while Serenity tried to calm her down.
"Well, standing around certainly isn't going to help. We might as well start practicing," Téa shrugged. Just as they began to stretch, her phone rang.
"Hello?" she answered the phone. Moments later, she ended the call and turned towards her group, looking slightly annoyed.
"What's wrong now?" Mai asked and Téa replied, "they want us to practice at their dance studio so that they can evaluate our performance."
"How the hell are they going to evaluate a dance from ancient times?" Mai mumbled as they all grabbed their bags and headed to the car.
"Why did you hire Téa Gardner?" Kaiba demanded as he looked down at the paper in his hand.
"Sir, she is simply amazing. Her dancing is divine. And you also told me to go ahead and hire her and her group," the event coordinator explained and he scowled. Why hadn't he bothered to even look at the paper? However, it was already too late. The gala was in two days and he couldn't afford to change the dance group. They were supposed to be the main entertainment.
"Get out," he ordered the woman, who nodded and left. Letting out a frustrated sigh, Kaiba looked down at the paper, his mind racing.
Why was it Gardner of all people? Why was it that she, of all people, was to dance at his ancient Egypt themed gala?
His dream flashed across his mind and he quickly shoved it from his thoughts. He didn't have time for stupid dreams.
"Damn it," he bit out as he stood and grabbed his coat. Turning, he left his office and headed to his car. He needed to pay Gardner a visit and find out just exactly what she was planning.
Moments later, his driver pulled up in front of the house Gardner lived in. As he looked out the window, his eyes grew wide as he took in the sight before him.
It was raining, yet Téa was outside, a smile on her face as she twirled around in the rain with wild abandon. As Kaiba stared at her, he felt something strange shoot through him and found that he couldn't tear his eyes from her. Enthralled, he got out of his car and began to walk towards her.
When he was a few feet in front of her, she suddenly stopped and looked at him with wide eyes.
"Kaiba," she breathed, obviously surprised. "What are you doing here?"
Snapping out of his trance, he looked down and scowled as he realized that he was getting soaked by the rain. Returning his attention to her, he drawled, "taking a bath, Gardner?"
Narrowing her eyes at him, she replied, "as a matter of fact, I am and you're interrupting it."
She saw surprise flicker in his eyes at her snarky retort before he sneered at her and asked, "why did you and your group audition to dance at my gala? What are you planning, Gardner?"
"As much as I enjoy scheming about how to destroy your life, Kaiba, I didn't sign up for the audition. One of my teammates did," she replied before adding with a scowl, "as if I would dance for you."
As she spoke, Kaiba's eyes unconsciously drifted down her body as her shirt, now soaked, clung to her form, outlining her curves perfectly.
Teana, a voice suddenly whispered in his ear.
"Quit checking me out, you pervert!" Téa yelled at the exact moment and he quickly looked at her face to see a scowl on it.
"Don't flatter yourself, Gardner," he sneered at her as he struggled to regain the upper hand. What was going on with him? As he looked at Gardner, he felt the same strange feeling shoot through him.
Pushing it down, he looked at her and threatened, "you'd better not do anything to embarrass me, Gardner, or you will regret it."
Looking him square in the eyes, she replied, "I'm already regretting it."
With a scowl, Kaiba turned and began to walk away. As he did, Téa felt a strange feeling shoot through her as she watched him leave.
Seto, a voice whispered in her ear and she felt her heartbeat speed up. What was happening to her? Why was she feeling so strange?
Just before he reached his car, Kaiba turned around and froze as he took in Téa. As she stood there in the rain, she looked beautiful and ethereal and he suddenly wanted nothing more than to grab her and embrace her. Time seemed to freeze as he looked at her and felt a sense of calmness and tranquility wash over him.
Téa looked up just in time to see Kaiba turned around. As he did, she froze and stared back at him. Standing in the rain, he looked handsome and she suddenly felt a strange desire to rush towards him and throw herself into his arms. As she stared at him, time seemed to freeze and she felt a sense of calmness and tranquility wash over her.
Seto, the voice whispered again in her ear and she was jolted from her daze.
Teana, the voice whispered again in Kaiba's ear and he found himself returning to reality to see Téa staring back at him, a strange expression on her face.
Without a word, he turned and got into the car. Just as the car was about to drive away, he put down his window.
"Gardner," he called and Téa looked over at him, still somewhat dazed. Smirking, he said, "I guess I found out how much you charge."
At the outraged look that seized her face, he chuckled and the car drove away.
"Jackass," Téa huffed after the car before she turned away and made her way into her house. As she did, however, she felt the same strange feeling within in. What was happening?
"Just make sure that everything is perfect," Kaiba scowled at the event coordinator, who nodded. The gala was the next day yet there were still minor problems that they had to deal with.
The woman had just told him that there was a problem with the costumes for the dancers and that the costumes would need to be quickly altered because of the change in the theme.
"Of course, sir," the woman, he couldn't remember her name, nodded and turned to leave.
"By the way, where are they practicing?" Kaiba asked.
"In our dance studio, sir," the woman replied and he nodded.
"And how are they coming along? Because, if they mess up," he paused and looked ruthlessly at the woman, "there goes your job."
Immediately, the woman's eyes grew wide and she shook her head, replying, "they're actually very good, sir. Especially Téa Gardner."
"Make sure that they're perfect," he remarked before he dismissed her.
After she left, Kaiba let out a sigh and leaned back in his seat. As he did, he closed his eyes. The moment he did, an image of Téa dancing while dressed in Egyptian clothing came to his mind. However, rather than the usual happy expression that she had on her face, her face was twisted in pain and her feet were bleeding.
Immediately, Kaiba sat up and opened his eyes, surprise clear on his face. That was from his dream, he was sure of it.
Seto, the same voice called out to him again. Without thinking twice, he got up and walked out of his office.
Shortly afterwards, he found himself standing in front of his company's dance studio.
But why had he gone there?
"Ready, guys?" Téa asked as she looked over at her group. They all nodded and the girls quickly moved into their position.
The music began and they started to dance. Téa easily went through the steps that they had rehearsed nonstop over the last few days.
However, as she danced this time, something felt different.
Teana, the same voice whispered in her ear and she felt goosebumps run up her skin. Suddenly, she felt as if she was floating. Not paying attention, she began to dance, her feet moving as if she knew the dance by heart. As she danced, everyone else stopped and simply stared at her.
Suddenly, the door opened and Seto Kaiba stepped in.
The moment he saw Téa dancing, Kaiba froze and could do nothing more than stare at her. As he did, confusion crossed his face as his eyebrows knitted together. Why did that dance look so familiar?
As Téa moved around the room, Kaiba couldn't help but think how much she looked like a beautiful temptress, her body moving seductively to the music.
As she danced, Téa felt as though she wasn't in control of her body. Rather, her body seemed to move on its own, as if the dance she was doing was embedded within her. Spinning around, she was surprised to see Kaiba in the room.
Even more surprising was the manner in which he was looking at her. Desire and, dare she say it, love seemed to be in his eyes as he stared at her. As she caught his eyes, it seemed as though time had stopped and everyone but them had disappeared.
Looking back at him, Téa felt the same strange feeling wash over her and wanted to rush into his arms and never leave him.
However, as she completed the spin, her mind seemed to have finally processed her shock at seeing him and, as a result, her feet gave out and she fell.
Kaiba watched as Téa spun around. But, when she looked at him, it felt as though everything froze. Suddenly, it was just them and only them.
Looking into her eyes, Kaiba felt the same strange feeling consume him and he wanted nothing more than to scoop her up into his arms.
The moment the thought crossed his mind, his rational mind seized control once again and he watched as Téa completed her spin before her feet gave out and she fell.
"Damn it!" he heard her yell and saw everyone rush towards her.
"Téa, are you okay?" Serenity asked as she leaned over Téa, who was clutching her ankle.
"I don't think so," Téa mumbled as she looked down at her ankle. "I think I twisted it."
The moment she said it, there were groans of 'oh no' from the group.
"Oh dear, what are we going to do now?" the event coordinator gasped.
Before anyone could say anything, Téa cleared her throat and replied, "I'll dance."
Gasps echoed through the room and everyone turned to stare at Téa, who was struggling to stand up.
"But, Téa, you can't," Serenity said, shaking her head, "You're hurt."
"It's no problem," Téa said as she managed to stand. She hobbled away slighly so that she was closer to Kaiba before smiling at them, "I'm sure it's not that bad."
At that, she took a step to prove her point and smiled at them before taking another step. However, when she took the second step, her feet gave out and she let out a slight gasp of pain before she collapsed.
Before she could hit the floor, she felt a pair of strong arms quickly grab her and looked up to see none other than Kaiba holding her.
"Kaiba," she breathed, "what are you doing?"
Helping her to her feet, he scoffed down at her, "not looking for you to sue me, Gardner, that's what."
"Well, thank you for helping me," she mumbled at him, watching as he stared down at her with his trademark look.
Then, he said, "go home, Gardner, before you hurt yourself further."
Instantly, she glared up at him and bit out, "don't tell me what to do."
Before he could reply, Serenity piped up, "but he's right, Téa. You should go home and rest."
She turned and saw that Mai was also nodding.
"Just go home and take it easy for the rest of the day," Mai said to her as she saw the rest of the group nod.
Knowing that she had been beaten, Téa sighed and replied, "fine." However, when she went to move, she looked down and realized that Kaiba's arms were still supporting her waist.
"You can let go now," she whispered up at him. Instantly, he released her and she had to steady herself so as to not fall. Turning, she hobbled over and grabbed her bag.
"I'll see you guys later," she smiled at her group, who all nodded and told her to relax.
With a smile, she turned away and hobbled to the door. As she did, she accidentally put pressure on her ankle and gasped in pain.
"For god's sake, Gardner," Kaiba suddenly scoffed before he strode forward and, to her surprise, picked her up bridal style.
"Wh-what are you doing?" Téa stuttered, her face turning pink as she looked at Kaiba, who seemed unmoved by what he had just done. Everyone else, however, was staring at the scene with immense shock on their faces.
Looking down at her, Kaiba replied with a scowl, "you're still on my property. Therefore, you can still sue and I'm not looking to deal with something as annoying and tedious as a lawsuit anytime soon."
With that, he turned and left the room with her in his arms while everyone else just stared after them, their mouths wide open.
As Kaiba carried her, Téa didn't know why, but it felt right. Being in his arms felt much more natural than she would have ever imagined.
And, now that she thought about it, he was the reason that she had fallen in the first place. When she'd spun around and seen him with that look on his face, something had happened inside of her and her heart had skipped a beat. As a result, her legs had given out on her.
But why, she wondered.
"Can you stop staring at me?" Kaiba's voice jolted her from her thoughts and she immediately averted her eyes, a scowl on her face.
The moment Téa looked away from him, Kaiba felt himself relax. He didn't know why but having her staring up at him was rather unnerving. Something about the way she had been ooking at him made his heart race. It was the same as the look she had given him not too long ago while she'd been dancing.
What had happened? Why had he felt so strange watching her dance? And why was it that carrying her bridal style in his arms felt so right and natural?
Nothing no longer made any sense to him.
"Téa, there is absolutely no way that you can dance," Serenity said as Téa let out gasp. They were all in the dressing room getting ready for the dance. However, her ankle was still hurting and she knew that she shouldn't be putting such stress on it.
"I don't really have a choice," Téa mumbled as the makeup artist finished her makeup. When Téa looked at herself in the mirror, she froze, her eyes wide as she took in her reflection.
She looked exactly as she had in her dreams. As she stared at herself in the mirror, her dream flashed through her head and she couldn't help but think how uncanny the resemblance was.
"Wow, you look great," Mai commented as she looked at Téa. "You look like you really are an Egyptian dancer."
Chuckling at her friend's words, Téa tried to shove her feelings of confusion and unease down. However, the feelings refused to go away and, as she looked at herself, she felt the same strange feeling overcome her.
Seto, the same voice whispered again.
"Téa, are you sure about this?" Serenity was asking her as she tuned back in. Nodding, Téa got to her feet and, flinching slightly, moved towards the door.
"See?" she asked through her pain. "It's not that bad."
With that, she turned and left the room, her worried friends following behind her.
A few minutes later, she found herself standing behind the curtain, waiting for the announcer to announce them. As she waited, Téa felt a sense of excitement fill her as well as nervousness. She was used to performing yet this time, it felt different.
Because of Seto, her mind whispered and she immediately shook her head. Where had that come from?
On the other side of the curtain, Kaiba suddenly looked up, his eyes drawn to the curtain. He didn't know how he knew but he was certain that Téa was standing behind there.
Seconds later, the announcer introduced the dancers and he watched as the curtain raised. Eyes wide, he took her in and felt the same strange feeling seize him.
Dressed in the Egyptian clothing, she looked exactly as she did in his dreams and he felt a strange urge to walk towards her. She looked up and their eyes met. The moment their eyes met, both felt something electric run through them. At that exact moment, the music started and the dance began.
Kaiba stared as Téa danced, her body moving like a sensual temptress. For some reason, her dancing now looked much different than it had the day before during practice. She looked both sensual and beautiful, exuding an aura of confidence similar to that which one felt when in love.
However, as she danced, he saw her face was twisted slightly in pain and knew immediately that her ankle had not healed fully. Yet, she was still dancing for his gala. Why?
As the music drew to a close, an image suddenly flashed through his head.
Kaiba saw himself, dressed in ancient Egyptian clothing, standing besides an Egyptian Yugi in a glorious throne room. They were both looking at Téa, who was also dressed in ancient Egyptian clothing, as she danced the exact dance that Gardner was currently dancing. Suddenly, the scene dramatically changed and he saw his Egyptian self held captive by soldiers alongside the same Egyptian Yugi. Both were watching in anger as Téa danced once again, this time in sand with an expression of pain on her face and blood seeping from her feet. Below her, the sand was stained red with her blood.
The music suddenly stopped, breaking him from his thoughts, and Kaiba looked up in time to see Téa staring back at him, a strange expression on her face. Then, almost as if in a daze, she began to dance again, her eyes fixed on him.
However, this dance was very different and unlike the first dance she had done.
As she danced, Téa didn't know why she was still dancing. She didn't have a solo. Yet, seconds before the group dance had ended, a scene had flashed across her mind.
She'd seen herself, dressed in the exact clothing, dancing in a large throne room, with Kaiba, also dressed in Egyptian clothing, as well as Atem staring back at her. Then, the scene had changed dramatically and she'd found herself standing in the desert, watching as her Egyptian self danced with bloody feet before an angry Egyptian Kaiba and Atem.
The moment the vision left, she'd felt something rush through her and, in a daze, began dancing the same dance that she'd danced in her vision.
She turned and saw Kaiba staring at her, a surreal look on his face as he watched her.
As Kaiba watched Téa dance, his eyes grew wide as he realized that she was dancing the exact dance she'd danced in his vision while her feet had been bleeding. He looked down at her feet immediately and saw that her ankle was slightly swollen yet she continued to dance, skillfully hiding the pain that she was in. Looking back at her face, his mind was racing.
How did Gardner know the exact dance that he had seen her dancing in his dream?
He caught her eyes once again and felt a jolt shoot through him as they stared at each other. As she looked at him, Kaiba saw her eyes flash and knew that she had felt the same jolt as well.
He watched as she spun, replicating the dance exactly, before she collapsed on the ground, positioning her body in the exact pose she'd been in in his vision.
The music immediately stopped and applause quickly filled the room. Looking at her, Kaiba shook his head in disbelief before he turned and practically stormed out of the room, his mind racing.
"That was amazing, Téa!" Emi yelled as Téa rejoined them.
"I didn't know you were doing a solo," Hikari said, looking rather confused before she quickly smiled and proceeded to congratulate Téa.
"That was great, Téa," both Mai and Serenity smiled at her. Téa nodded and shot her friends a quick, shallow smile before she turned in the direction Kaiba had just stormed off in, her mind racing.
What had just happened?
