Chapter 14
"I'm not waking her up, you should have seen what she did to Aubrey," Chloe muttered to Stacie as they stood inside the room debating on how to wake Beca and Aubrey up.
"Maybe we should wake Aubrey up first, and then kind of jump on Beca so she won't be able to move?" Stacie asks.
"It could work…"
The two girls silently walk over to Aubrey and wake her up. She looks around for a minute, remembering where she is. Her senses are alert and she's up and ready in about five seconds.
"So, we are gonna jump on her so she doesn't kick our ass like she did yours. Sound good?" Chloe asks Aubrey, only to be answered with a grunt and crossed arms.
The girls walked slowly towards Beca, and were about ready to pounce when Beca flipped over and tackled Chloe to the ground. "You guys really need to be quieter when plotting my awakening." Beca pressed a small, chaste kiss onto Chloe's lips and lifted herself up, bringing her girlfriend up with her. She looks to Stacie. "May I ask why it is you are waking me up?"
Stacie looks to Aubrey and then wordlessly pulls Beca out of the room and into the hallway. "There are people coming. They're going to be looking for us and we need to get out of here and head back to Georgia. Now."
Beca's expression darkens and turns almost expressionless as she nods. "Is Chloe telling Aubrey?" Stacie nods. "Alright, what do we have to work with?"
Stacie grins like the devil and pulls Beca downstairs to the now-empty household, and then out of the front door where she sees the blue crossover electric car and the rest of the Bellas packing up the gear. The taller brunette leads her best friend to the trunk of the blue crossover and unzips the duffel bags, letting Beca rifle through all of the bags.
"Where did you get these?" she asks as she holds up a pistol, checking the magazine.
Stacie shuffles her feet for a second before answering, "We found a gun shop… And we might have taken most of the guns… And there might have been armed men going to the gun shop…"
"Seriously? You stole a gun shop from people?" Stacie nods again. "Nice!" Beca holds her hand up for a high five, Stacie hesitantly returns it.
"So you're not mad?"
Beca shrugs and says, "Better for us to have these than them."
"I suppose… So which way should we go?"
"Well, do you know where their camp is?"
Stacie thinks for a while, remembering the bullet through the window. She looks towards the west and points. "I think it was that way."
"Well, we can just head out east towards the coast and then head south," Beca says, "and hopefully we don't run into problems. Did you happen to get a map?"
"Oh!" Stacie steps around to the passenger side of the blue car. "Donald found this in between the seats." She reaches into the car and pulls out an atlas of the United States, then hands it to Beca.
The smaller girl opens up the atlas to the North Carolina section. She flips through it until she finds the southern portion. "You said we are here right?" she points to Elizabethtown.
"Yeah."
Beca sighs, "Okay, since we are in the middle of bum fuck nowhere, we might have to drive through the town. Chances are, they will be looking to the east for us, so maybe if we take the 701 into town and then get on 87, we'll be on the highway and maybe avoid people since they are most likely camping in rural areas."
"So, you're pretty much wanting to take a road trip?"
"Exactly. People who drive on the highway in this situation are too stupid to take a whole gun store."
"Makes sense. Alright, so how do we get on the 701 from here?"
Beca and Stacie go through the route, using a pencil they found in the glove box to mark the route. The duo tell the others and Beca opts to drive the Impala, because, come on, it's fucking gorgeous. Which means Stacie and Chloe are riding along, which in turn means Aubrey is in the Impala as well. Since the crossover is bigger, it has room for the other six people with Cynthia Rose able to stretch out in the trunk and the others to sit in the seats.
Beca leads the way with her car since she has the map, and the car surprisingly isn't that loud, even if the infected hear the car, they will be long gone by the time they get there. The only thing to worry about is gas, not to mention electricity. If it wasn't for all of the abandoned cars on the road, Beca would almost be worried. At least they could keep the Impala for a while, but they might have to ditch the blue crossover at some point and exchange it for another car; one that uses gas.
The groups reach the outskirts of the town, so Beca stops and gets out of the car, heading towards the blue crossover where Benji is diving. He rolls down the window and asks, "So what's the plan?"
Beca looks towards the town and back to Benji. "I want you to go slow through the town. If you see something dangerous, gun it. I'll take the hint and be right behind you." Beca hands him the map. "Try to avoid the cars, drive between lanes or even between roads if you have to."
Benji nods and when Beca goes to walk away, he grabs her arm. "Hey, I'm sorry about what happened… You know, with the, um, J-Jesse thing… I didn't mean it. I just…"
"I know, Benji," Beca says. "You loved him. Love can make us do crazy shit." Beca looks over at the redhead in the car up ahead. "Alright. You go first."
Benji rolls up the window, and the brunette walks back to the Impala. She holds a thumb up outside the window to signal Benji and they're off into the town.
They creep their way down the 701 until Benji stops the car. Beca drives up next to him and Chloe rolls down the passenger side window as Benji lowers his window. "What about that Texaco there? We could find a generator to charge the car," he says.
Beca shakes her head. "No, it's way too dangerous to stop right now. Let's just get through this down before anyone sees us."
Benji nods before rolling up his window and continues to drive down the highway. They get to the exit to get on to 87 and as they're curling around the road, Beca sees Benji's car swerve and he guns it down the 87. Beca has just pressed down on the pedal before she hears a resounding gunshot. Fuck, they hit Benji's car, she thinks as she hits the pedal to the floor, switching gears as the car gains speed. She reaches over to Chloe and pulls her down by the collar of her shirt. "Get the fuck down!" she screams to the other two in the back seat.
Aubrey gets on the floor between the front seats and back seats while Stacie lays down on the back seats, keeping half of her body over Aubrey's. Beca continues to hold Chloe down with one hand, periodically switching gears and swerving to avoid cars on the highway. She continues to follow Benji's car down the highway, then turning to break off onto the 41, and again onto the 410.
The leading car slows to stop and Beca gets out of her car, running to the blue crossover. Benji steps out with an exhausted look on his face. "Is everyone okay?" she asks as she reaches him. He nods and slumps against the car, taking deep breaths.
Donald comes out of the passenger seat and walks over to her with the map in hand. "Okay, so right now we are on the 410, heading south. When we get to Bladenboro, we can break off and get back onto the 701 and head south towards Georgia."
The small girl just nods, and Donald gets back into the car. She looks back at Benji. "You okay?"
"Yeah, the bullet was just close, that's all. Just a little freaked out," he says back. She looks at him blankly and he pulls her to the driver's side, showing her the hole in the windshield and then the hole where his head would have been. "If I wasn't resting my head on the window, I'd be dead."
"But you're not."
He nods and gets back into the car, starting it back up again. Beca heads back to her Impala and gets inside. "Looks like we are going to Bladenboro."
After about 20 minutes, they pull into the small town of Bladenboro. The cars slow to a stop and the group decides to get a feel for the tiny town, so they get out of their respective cars after hiding them in a small alleyway. As soon and Beca steps into the light, she sees a medicine shop.
"Hey, guys!" Beca says, looking back at the group, "I found a medicine shop." She walks towards the group. "We should check it out." There's a bunch of affirmatives coming from the group and they decided to walk towards the medicine store.
As they get there, they find that the doors inside are automatic, so as they walk in, they find that the store is actually in pristine shape. Very clean, and completely deserted. They take a couple of hesitant steps with their weapons drawn before splitting up and looking around the store for useful things to grab. After looking around the front of the store for a while, they find a boot for Cynthia Rose's healing leg, a bunch of bottles of ibuprofen, and they decided to grab three of the bigger first aid kits.
Just before they left, Beca decided to go check the back for the more extensive pain killers like morphine and Vicodin. She walks through the back, looking at the different prescriptions and medicines, before deciding to get a bunch of bottles of different pain killers. She comes back out to the front and meets the rest of the group as they head out of the store.
"How are we on food and water?" the small brunette asks.
"We are alright. It wouldn't hurt to pick up some stuff. I think I saw a sign for a gas station up the road. We can kill two birds with one stone and get some food, drinks, and gas," Benji responds.
"Alright, lead the way."
The group gets back into their respective cars and Benji drives down the road, finding the gas station. They all get out of their cars and head inside the station. The girls, save for Beca gather up some food and drinks, taking periodic trips to the cars. Beca and the boys find a couple of the gas tanks to fill up. One of the guys goes behind the counter, and presses a couple of buttons, but the electricity isn't on, so he has to grab a key from behind the counter to go unlock the gas pumps manually.
The boys fill up the gas tanks and Beca goes back in to find some plastic tubing they can use to get gas out of abandoned cars on the road. She heads back out to see Benji standing by his little crossover. She walks over to him and says, "Hey what's up?"
He thinks for a moment before responding, "We either need a generator or we need to find another car for me, because this won't last the six hour drive to Georgia."
She looks at her Impala and how small it is. "Yeah, we both need bigger cars… Want to go into town and see if we can find a couple of trucks?"
"That might be best. Just you and me, or should we bring the others?"
"I think we should bring another person. We should get three new ones. We need someone who can hotwire one as well though… So, Stacie?"
"Sounds good. Go on and get her, and we can start looking for some cars or trucks or whatever."
Beca nods and heads toward Stacie, telling them her and Benji's plan. Stacie agrees and then Beca heads over to Chloe.
"Hey Chlo'!" Beca says as she wraps her arms around her girlfriend's neck, giving her a peck on the lips. "I need you to be in charge of the group for a bit."
"Why, baby?" Chloe mutters against Beca's lips.
"I have to go get us new cars…"
Chloe sighs against her lips, "Will you guys take some pistols and ammo with you?"
The brunette chuckles and responds, "Yes, I'll even take two."
The two chuckle and Beca goes to pull some ammo and magazines out of the duffel bags, and starts to load up different magazines and putting silencers on the guns. She even starts preparing guns for Benji and Stacie.
She looks back up to Chloe, handing her a silenced pistol and then an assault rifle. "Okay, babe, if anything small happens, use this," Beca explains, pointing to the pistol. "If something big happens, use this," she points to the assault rifle, "and get everyone locked inside of the gas station. I want you guys unloading everything from the cars and putting them into the station, just in case. Okay?"
Chloe nods and pulls her girl into a hug. "I love you."
"I love you, too, Chlo'."
The girls separate and Beca walks back to Benji and Stacie who are loading up from the trunk of the car, taking the guns that Beca prepared for them.
"Oh, hey, Beca, I have a surprise for you." Stacie pull out a smaller duffel bag that was hidden under one of the seats, and opens it.
Beca's eyes go wide and her smile grows like she's the Grinch who came up with how to steal Christmas. "Are you serious?" Stacie nods. "I love you so much!" Beca reaches into the bag and pulls out a belt with knife holsters all around it, and then a harness where knives would be stored. She reaches back in and pulled out knife after knife, loading them onto her belt and harness. "Let's do this shit."
The other two people chuckle and pat her on the back as they head out to the town, looking for a couple of cars. When the small group reach a small electronics shop, they end up going inside to see if they can find some flashlights and extra batteries. Maybe a solar powered battery to charge things like iPods. They walk around the store, collecting the items, when Beca comes across some handheld radios, like walkie talkies. She waves her friends over and they get around ten of them, and then rechargeable batteries so they could use them for a while, they stuff the things into a couple of the store bags and continue on their journey to find the cars.
They find a neighborhood and Beca thanks the gods that they are in a country state, because all lined down on driveways are trucks, and trucks. Oh and also, trucks. Beca points to a black Ford F250 with a covering over the bed and says, "I want that one. Can you guys cover me while I get it running?"
The other two nod as Beca walks to the back of the truck and opens the trunk, using a flashlight to check the bed. She crawls on top of the cover and goes up to the back window, using her flashlight to check the inside of the cab. Deeming it safe enough, she opens the window that leads into the cab from the bed, and crawls inside, silently thanking her genes for making her really small. She unlocks the doors from the inside, and opens the driver's side door, stepping out of the car and she's just about the open the panel to hotwire it when she realizes something.
"Hey, guys, if this is parked in front if the house, you suppose the keys are in there?" she asks.
"Yeah, I would think so." Benji walks around the truck and heads towards the front door to try opening it. "Of course it's locked." He pulls out his pocket knife and picks the lock to the house with Beca and Stacie trialing behind him.
Beca stops him before he opens the door. "Wait, the electricity is out." Beca pulls out a flashlight and takes her pistol, holding her gun tactical style, with her light underneath her gun. "Hold the gun like this. There is no way I'm throwing knives in the dark."
The other two nod and get ready. Benji leads with Beca in the middle, then Stacie pulling up the back. He opens the door, checking the left side, while Beca stays straight and Stacie turns to the right. It's an unspoken agreement for all three of them to stay in the same room. They clear the front room and advance into the kitchen. Beca turns to the left and sees a body on the couch. Oddly enough, it's sitting right side up. Beca, not being one to take chances, fires a shot directly into its head, just in case. The body slumped further into the couch.
The girl walks towards the body to check it out and she notices it's a man. She checks the face and it's quite obvious that it was an infected. She decided to look through the pockets for the keys, and then she hears a silenced shot and a thump on the floor. She whips her head around to see an infected not three feet from her lying face down on the floor with Stacie holding up the pistol in her direction.
"Thanks…" Beca mutters.
"N-no problem."
Beca continues to search the pockets. Not finding the keys, she searches the pockets of the infected on the floor. BOOYAH. She shakes the keys, and they all head out of the front door, and back to Beca's truck. She keeps the keys in her pocket and now, it's Benji's turn to pick a car or truck, or whatever.
Benji and his buddies walk down the street, keeping a vigilant eye out for anything when he sees it. A black Chevy Blazer parked outside of a trailer. He points to it. "That one." Beca pats his back and they make their way to the car and trailer.
Benji looks inside of the car, but almost stumbles back as an infected in the driver's seat hits the window and scares the shit out of him, although he will never admit that. Beca walks over to the door and puts her hand on the handle. Benji backs up and aims at the door with Stacie a couple feet behind him. He nods and Beca pulls the door handle. She pulls it again. And again.
"Well, fuck," Beca says, throwing her hands in the air with exasperation.
"No worries. I got this." Benji walks over to the car's passenger side and takes a look inside the car. The infected is strapped into the car with the keys in the ignition. It looks like the person didn't have time to start the car before turning. He walks to the trunk and picks the lock. He lifts it open and Beca crawls through the back and reaches between the passenger window and seat to unlock the car, careful of the infected struggling to move with the seat belt. She presses the button and opens the back door to get out.
She walks to the driver's side and puts her hand on the handle. This time though, Benji takes out his bow and an arrow, fixing it so he's ready to release. Better not to waste ammo when I can just do this, he thinks. Beca yanks open the door, covering herself and Benji lets his arrow go. It glides through the air and ends up in the infected's neck. Faster than anyone thought possible, Benji reloads and lets another one go, downing the infected to the ground. He walks over and pulls his arrows out, wiping them on the grass.
He reaches into the car and pulls out the keys, putting them in his pocket. "I'm good!" he says.
Stacie's turn.
It doesn't take long for Stacie to find a car. Actually, all she had to do was turn around and there it was. A yellow 4x4 Jeep Wrangler, complete with a hard top. The house is really more of a shack, and when she goes to open the empty car's door, it opens successfully. She looks around in the car, finding the keys in the console. She almost deflates over how easy it was to obtain her car. She actually debates on going inside the house just to kill another infected. Crazy? I think yes.
The three singers get into Stacie's car. She starts it seeing she has half a tank of gas and drops Benji off at his car.
Benji looks around the trunk of the car for a tarp and puts the tarp over the driver's seat. He starts to car with almost a full tank of gas, and rolls down all of the windows to get the smell out. He follows Stacie's Jeep towards where Beca left her truck.
Beca gets into her truck and starts it up. She is almost empty, so that means a refill when they get back to the station.
Beca leads the way to the station. When she pulls up she sees that the cars have been unpacked, and everyone must be inside the station. She hops out of the car, followed by Stacie and Benji, then head into the station.
Chloe beams when her girlfriend walks through the door and pulls her into a bear hug. "I was getting a bit nervous 'cause you guys were gone for a while."
Beca chuckles and kisses Chloe. It was supposed to be a quick kiss, but soon, their tongues were dancing with each other. That is, until they hear a cough. Beca pulls away and rolls her eyes. "Well, I'm back and I got a truck."
Chloe's eyes flash with excitement before she starts barking orders at the rest of the group. All of the miscellaneous items and food go into the Chevy. The water and medicine goes into the Jeep, and the guns go into Beca's truck. Everyone has been equipped with one silenced pistol, except Beca who has two, and Chloe, who has an assault rifle as well. They topped off the newly acquired vehicles and then refilled the smaller gas tanks, taking the gas out of the Impala with the plastic tubing as well. Everyone was handed a walkie talkie. Beca and Chloe get into the truck, and since Stacie didn't care much for the Jeep, she and Aubrey got in with Beca and Chloe. Benji and the boys got into the Chevy. Lilly and Fat Amy got the Jeep with Cynthia stretching out in the trunk with the water and medicine in the back seat.
They had all agreed to turn in for the night after driving a bit and getting onto the 211. They pulled off onto a dirt road and settled somewhere in the woods so they were surrounded by trees. The windows of each car were rolled down slightly for oxygen, but not enough to stick a hand out of. Beca and Chloe set up some pillows and blankets in the bed of the truck next to the guns. Stacie took the bench seat and set the backs of the seats all the way back and it turned into a makeshift bed. In the Jeep, Cynthia Rose slept in the trunk with Lilly and Fat Amy laid across the back seats. In the Chevy, Donald and Uni slept in the trunk while Benji took the back seats.
Every car was locked up and completely silent for the night.
A/N: YES. HOW DID YOU LIKE THAT SHIZ? Anyway, review, follow, etc. It's much appreciated. I LOVE YOU ALL MY LITTLE DARLINGS. KAY BYE.
