A Vineyard Valentine:
I was woken up from a peaceful sleep by the loud slamming of a door. My eyelids fluttered open against the harsh light streaming in from the window near the bed. I stifled a groan as I rolled on my back and rubbed my eyes to get rid of the grogginess of sleep. I squinted my eyes in displeasure as the sunlight hit the side of my body just as my boyfriend wandered into our bedroom looking frazzled.
"Hey." I greeted him tiredly as I yawned and stretched my arms out in front of me while I watched him search for something on the desk.
"Hi." Colin returned my greeting distractedly as I rolled onto my side to watch him look on the desk.
"Why are you up?"
"It's 11:04, the whole world is up." He replied with a smirk in my direction as he moved over to my vanity to continue his search.
"Keith Richard isn't up. Pete Doherty isn't up." I counted with a smirk of my own as I watched him in look under articles of clothing in amusement.
"Colin McCrae is up."
"He shouldn't be. You're making me dizzy." I complained with a scowl as he turned in a circle in the middle of the bedroom.
"I forgot my Introduction to Contract Tort and Restitution Statutes from 1865 to 1923." He told me as he stopped spinning to look at me desperately.
"Don't see how you can function without your Introduction to Contract Tort and Restitution Statutes from 1865 to 1923." I mocked him with a sarcastic frown on my lips and he rolled his eyes at me as he gave me a pointed and unamused look so I sighed in defeat. "I have no idea what those words mean. Honey, I'm a fashion major."
"You're a double major in fashion and business and a minor in journalism!" he argued with me and I shrugged my shoulders in innocence as he scowled at me. I watched with a smile as he sighed in defeat and sunk down to the edge of the bed.
"What are you doing?" I asked in confusion as he started taking off his shoes at the end of the bed.
"I'm skipping class." He explained as though it was obvious and I grinned at him as he climbed on the bed next to me. "I'm already accepted into law school, why keep studying?"
"Such dedication." I praised him jokingly as he pressed a passionate kiss to me lips and I kissed him back fervently.
"What do you want to do this weekend?" he asked me as we both pulled away from the kiss a little breathless and I frowned in confusion at him. "It's Valentine's Day."
"That's not till next week." I reminded him with a chuckle as he grabbed my hand in his and traced little hearts with his thumb on my skin.
"This weekend's Valentine's weekend. Come on let's go somewhere." he said excitedly and I laughed at the glee that was evident in his eyes.
"I can't."
"Christa…" he whined as he gripped my waist with his other hand and I giggled at little at his puppy dog pout.
"No, I promised my mom I'd try to hang out with her, even if it was just for dinner. I haven't seen her in ages." I told him as I placed my hand on his bicep and he groaned a little at my protest.
"But she doesn't kiss as good as I do."
"You don't know that." I joked with a serious look on my face and he chuckled at me as I broke out in a smile.
"Very true."
"She's been down lately. I kinda want to cheer her up." I said to him a little sadly at the mention of my mother's depressed mood since she found out that Luke had a daughter. It didn't help matters that Luke had also asked her to postpone the wedding so that he could get to know his daughter properly. I understood why he wanted to do that and so did mom, but that mean she had to be happy about it.
"Then invite her along. We can have a kissing contest." He kidded with a grin and I laughed as pressed a quickly kiss to his lips.
"That's very sweet, but I don't know."
"Oh, come on. It will be good for her and Luke to get away from all the drama." He pointed out to me and I pursed my lips as I thought about it. "We can invite Rory and Logan too. I know that they haven't seen a lot of each other since they moved in together because Rory's been busy with catching up with her studies and the paper."
"That's true." I murmured thoughtfully as I tapped my lips with my finger as I thought about it and Colin smiled victoriously obviously knowing that I would cave to his suggestion. I watched with narrowed eyes as he reached across me to the bedside table and came back with my cell phone in his hand.
"Call Lorelai." He ordered me in playful sternness and I rolled my eyes with a smile on my lips as I took the cell from his outstretched hand.
"Sir, yes, sir." I said in a mock gruff voice as I saluted him with a serious expression before laughing in delight and anticipation. Colin chuckled at me as he gave me one last kiss before climbing out of the bed.
"I'm going to go call Logan and get him and Rory on board. Dial!" he demanded strictly as he pointed a finger at me and left the room to go call Logan in the lounge room. I laughed to myself as I pressed speed dial 2 on my phone and held it to my ear.
"Hello?" my mother's voice greeted me over the phone line and I couldn't help but smile at the sound. My smile quickly turned to a frown of confusion when I heard the faint sound of Zydeco music in the background of the call.
"Hi, it's me." I greeted my mother happily as I rolled on my back on the bed.
"Oh, hi, hon!" mom said giddily when she realised who it was on the phone.
"What's with the flaming accordion in the background?"
"Oh, it's my new friend, Boozoo, which is cajun for "won't leave."" Mom told me dramatically and I laughed at her desperate tone.
"Explain." I ordered her once my laugh had died down and I heard her sigh on the other end of the phone.
"It's a zydeco band I'd arranged to audition for the wedding, and once they're holding their instruments, they can't not play and, apparently, they can't stop. Oh, they stopped." Mom exclaimed happily when the music stopped playing in the background of the call.
"Good."
"I mean they haven't had food or water in two hours. It makes sense that they'd have to…" she trailed off as the Zydeco music restarted in the background and she sighed in exasperation as I chuckled at her misfortune. "Torture me." she finished and I could hear the pout in her voice.
"Maybe you can get zydeco cops to come and stop them." I quipped jokingly as I giggled. "Since when are you into Zydeco?"
"I just thought it might be festive and funny. I was going to audition them and a Dixieland combo and Leled Zepagain."
"Who?"
"A led zeppelin cover band."
"Oh. That's clever." I stated in appreciation as I twirled a piece of my hair around my finger absentmindedly.
"It just slipped my mind. I guess this is the last nail in the coffin of June 3rd. The cut-off day to get the deposit back on the hall just passed, too." Mom told me sadly and I frowned in sympathy for her because I knew that she really wanted to marry Luke.
"Might be time to face the music, so to speak." I suggested to her equally as sad about her postponed nuptials.
"You know anyone in the market for a wedding? It's planned and paid for." She joked light-heartedly and I snorted in an unladylike fashion as I glanced at my bare left hand.
"You'll have your wedding, eventually." I informed her as I shook my head and looked up at the ceiling.
"I guess."
"Mom, you'll have your wedding." I repeated more sternly when I heard the doubt in her voice.
"I don't know anymore. Luke's been so busy with April lately. I mean it's good and all. It's the right thing to do. She's his daughter. But I just... I'm bummed, kid."
"I know. Hey, what have you got planned for Valentine's Day weekend?" I asked in a bright voice as I attempted to change the subject to a more exciting one that would make her happy.
"Uh, this weekend? Nothing, surprise, surprise. Luke isn't really a Valentine's Day kind of guy." She said to me with a slight chuckle and I grinned at the excellent timing.
"Well how would you like an all-expense-paid trip to Martha's Vineyard?" I offered slyly as I sat up on the bed and crossed my legs under me.
"Martha's vineyard? Really?" she asked me and I smirked when I heard the excitement in her voice now.
"Colin's family has a place up there. It's awesome. He's calling Logan and Rory now to see if they can come too. Go with us, you and Luke."
"Really? You've run this past Colin?" she asked me sceptically and I rolled my eyes at her even though she couldn't see me.
"It was his idea. You know that he loves you and Luke." I assured her pointedly and she laughed a little in reply.
"I don't know if Luke would be up for it."
"We'll make him be up for it. I think he'd like it. It's beach, it's nature. I mean it'll be cold, but we can still walk outside. It's beautiful."
"I've always wanted to see the vineyard." She relented a little and I beamed happily at my persuasion skills.
"Then force him to come, and if he's a sourpuss while he's there, you'll still have me, Rory and Colin."
"Okay, I'll talk to him." Mom finally gave in to my begging and I cheered loudly as she laughed at my response.
"I'll e-mail you directions. Come anytime Friday."
"You've got room and all? Me and Luke plus five?" she asked me and I frowned in confusion at her question.
"Plus five?"
"Well, I'm not coming without Boozoo and the boys." She joked with me and I chuckled as I nodded my head in agreement.
"The more the merrier." I teased with a grin as I climbed off of the bed gracelessly.
"Cool! Bye, hon."
"Bye." I replied cheerfully as I walked out of the bedroom door towards the kitchen.
Colin and I were in the kitchen at the house in Martha Vineyard that Friday as we waited for mom and Luke to arrive. Rory was already hanging out in the living room while Logan was in there room and Colin and I made coffee. I looked up from the coffee pot when I heard the front door opening and then the excited squealing of my mother and my twin sister.
"You made it!" Rory squealed happily at the same time that my mom squealed, "We made it!"
"Hi, Luke!" Rory said excitedly and I smiled at the sound as I walked out of the kitchen hand in hand with Colin to greet them at the front door.
"Sorry we're late." Luke said in his gruff voice just as we walked into the room and saw all three of them standing around the door.
"You're not late." I assured them as I wrapped my mother in a hug while Colin shook Luke's hand. "Hey, mom."
"It took longer than we thought, the ferry and all. Did you know Martha's Vineyard is an island?" mom gushed rapidly and I chuckled lightly as I pulled away.
"Well I've been here before." I quipped as I hugged Luke in greeting and Colin gave mom a kiss on the cheek.
"Hey, there's our intrepid travellers." Logan said from behind us and we all turned to see him coming into the living room from the hallway to the bedrooms.
"Hi, Logan." Mom greeted him stiffly and I raised an eyebrow at her in question but she avoided my gaze.
"Welcome, and this must be Luke."
"Oh, no, I dumped Luke. This is Clem. I picked him up at a truck stop on 95. We were at the register, paying for our blue plates, and our hands reached for the same Dixie Chicks cassette."
"Luke Danes." Luke interrupted her as the rest of us laughed at her.
"Logan Huntzberger, good to have you, anything else to unload?" Logan asked as he and Luke shook hands formally.
"Uh no, there's a few things, but I've got it."
"….So this is the place." I said cheerfully to break the awkward silence that fell over the group and Colin wrapped an arm around my waist comfortably. "This is the den, and the dining room, which seats 20, the wet bar." I told them as we walked around the house and I gestured to each room as I spoke.
"Just keeps getting better." Mom said happily as she looked around with wide eyes.
"And that's the living room, the kitchens up there, and the ocean's out there, but you can't see it."
"Ahh, rip-off."
"So you guys hungry?" Colin asked as we came to a stop in the den and Colin and I turned to face the other two couples with smiles on our faces.
"We're fine. We ate on the road." Luke answered for them with a half-smile.
"Cool. Just a couple peculiarities about the house." I warned them hesitantly as I grimace slightly.
"It's a grandma, so it's got its kinks." Colin continued with my warning as he waved a hand in the air to show the house.
"Some of the hardwood floors have buckled, so watch your step."
"The French doors are warped from the winter, so you have to give them a yank when you open them."
"And that noise you may hear outside your window in the morning..."
"That would be Stan." Colin concluded with a half-smile in my direction as I giggled slightly.
"Gardener?" mom asked us with an amused smile on her lips as she looked at us and I shook my head at her.
"Raccoon." I corrected her with a chuckle.
"He's been living on the property longer than my family has. So we give him free reign." Colin informed them. "Last time we were here, Christa decided that he needed a name."
"Of course he does, it's rude to just call him 'the racoon'. And the showers there are three of them. Run any two at the same time, and they turn to ice, so give everybody heads-up before you take a dive."
"Oh, good to know." Rory said sarcastically with a smirk and I jokingly pursed my lips at her before smiling brightly.
"Oh in the morning we'll have stuff here to eat, or you can go up the street to Joe's café for breakfast. They open at 8:00." I told them cheerfully.
"7:00, actually." Colin corrected me and I frowned up at him in confusion.
"There's a 7.00 in the morning?" I joked as I wrinkled my nose up and they all laughed at me. "Right, 7:00. We never go before 8:00. But that's all. Want to see your room?" I asked mom and Luke excitedly as I clapped my hands together once.
"Lead the way." Mom told me as she waved a hand for me to go and I smirked at her before I pressed a kiss to Colin's cheek and led mom and Luke to the hallway. I looked behind me to see Luke and mom following me down the hall while Colin led Rory and Logan into the kitchen for coffee. I opened a door on the left side of the hallway and held open for them to go in first.
"Here we are, we call it the king and queen's suite." I informed them loftily as they looked around the room appreciatively.
"Neat. Why?" mom asked me as Luke threw their bags onto the king sized bed.
"Because you're our honoured guests, and I just named it that a second ago."
"We'll take it."
"So the controller for the heater is by the nightstand. All of the windows open, except for the second one on the left, so don't try to open it because you'll hurt your back. And don't forget about the showers."
"Got it."
"I guess we'll see you guys later."
"I'd really like to tip you, but I've only got a $20." Mom joked and I smiled at her slyly.
"Just add it to the bill, ma'am."
"Will do."
"Thanks."
"Good to have you here." I told them honestly as I started to close the door to their bedroom.
"Good to be here." She responded to me and I quickly pulled the door open again to smirk at her.
"Oh, and please try to be nice to Logan while you're here." I ordered her with a smile on my face and she opened her mouth protest but I just lifted an eyebrow at her and she closed her mouth quickly. "Yeah, I thought so." I breathed out as I closed the door on her chuckling.
A little while later, Logan and Rory had retired to their bedroom for the night while Colin and I decided to watch a movie in the living room and mom and Luke were still in their room doing god knows what. My boyfriend and I were sitting on one of the comfortable armchairs with me sitting his lap and eating popcorn out of the bowl on my lap.
"This is a good movie." Colin whispered in my ear but I didn't take my eyes off of the television in front of me.
"Shh…" I scolded him as I shoved a handful of popcorn into my mouth and I heard Colin sigh as he leaned back on the seat with his arm wrapped around my waist.
"Psst!" someone hissed from behind the lounge chair we were sitting on and I let out a scream as I jumped making the popcorn fly everywhere.
"Oh, my God!" I screamed out loud as I clapped a hand over my mouth and I felt my heart rate accelerate as adrenaline overtook my body.
"Shh…baby. Calm down." I heard Colin say to me in a calm voice that was filled with laughter as he rubbed circles on my back. I shot him a quick glare before I looked over to see who had frightened me in the first place.
"Hey, you." Mom said to me innocently before the spot next to the armchair where she was kneeling. I glared at her as I pressed my hand over my racing heart and Colin chuckled silently at my reaction. "Are we supposed to stay in our rooms?"
"What? No." I whispered back to her in confusion. "Why?"
"Just checking." She whispered back to me as she shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly.
"You can stay in there or come out here." Colin told her in an equally confused voice and I finally relaxed back into his embrace.
"Okay, cool."
"Then why are you whispering?" I asked her quietly as I let an amused smile crossed my lips.
"I don't know. We're in somebody else's house."
"It's my house. And I'm pretty sure that Christa's scream would've woken everyone up anyway." Colin teased me as he squeezed me waist and I playfully slapped his chest as mom laughed at our exchange.
"... So, in or out?" I asked her as Colin pressed a kiss to the nape of my neck and I stifled a moan because he knew that it was a pleasure spot of mine.
"I think we'll stay in." mom answered easily with a wave of her hand and I smiled at her coyly.
"Okay. Don't do anything I wouldn't do." I warned her with a giggle and mom gave me an amused disbelieving look before heading back to her bedroom.
Later that day Rory, mom and I were at the gym in the closest town to the cabin while the boys were playing basketball outside and us girls were hanging around inside in our work out clothes with no intention of working out in the slightest. We each had a glass of cucumber water in our hands as we leaned on a counter.
"Hit me again, there, friend." Rory ordered one of the gym staff members as she placed the empty glass on the counter in front of him.
"Ah I needed that, especially after that jog we took." Mom quipped as she placed her cup down next to Rory's and I frowned at her in confusion.
"From the dressing room?" I asked her as I sipped the rest of my water and then put it on the counter next to theirs.
"Yeah, it was at least 20 yards. Plus the three steps we walked up to get in the building."
"That was some gnarly cardio." Rory said sarcastically as we simultaneously rolled our eyes at our mother.
"What is it about cucumber water that makes it so much more refreshing than non-cucumber water?" I asked them curiously to change the subject before mom could retort to my sister.
"I think it's the cucumbers." Rory informed me as the man behind the desk refilled our empty glasses and I hummed in acknowledgement as I picked up my refilled glass.
"So, shall we resume our workout?" mom asked us as she also picked up her glass and we both nodded as we started to walk around the gym slowly. "You know, this is a nice facility."
"I know, I like that you can get day passes. You don't have to pay for a whole…" I started to tell them.
"Aahh!" someone grunted loudly from one of the machines and we all jumped in surprise.
"That was loud." Mom pointed out of obvious and I rolled my eyes at her with a smile on my lips.
"I think a little warning was order."
"No one remembers gym etiquette. So, the walk from the cucumber water to here, that was, what, another 20 calories?" I asked them as we stopped next to a metal machine that I had no idea what it did.
"Let's call it 40… Hey, is Luke okay? He seems a little distracted." Rory asked mom with a concerned frown.
"Oh, yeah, he's fine. He's just not much of a traveller, so it's all kind of foreign to him." She answered her vaguely and I got the impression that she was lying.
"Cause I want him to have a good time."
"He will." She assured her with a tight fake smile.
"More cucumber water?" I asked them to break the tension as I waved my empty cup in the air.
"I'm always up for more cucumber water." Mom said with a happy grin and I smiled back at her before a sudden loud noise made us all jump. "Ah! God, I'll never get used to that."
A little while later, the three of us were getting shoulder massages while we waited for the boys to finish up playing basketball.
"Hey, guys. What's going on?" I heard Logan ask so I opened my eyes to see the boys staring at us in confusion.
"Oh, wow. I was, like, in a Zen trance. I was totally somewhere else." Mom exclaimed as she opened up her eyes next to me.
"Me too." Rory and I coursed in unison.
"I was in Greece. Where were you guys?" Rory asked us curiously.
"Bergdorf Goodman." Mom answered the a simply shrug of her shoulders.
"When you reach a Zen trance, you go to Bergdorf Goodman?"
"To each his own. I went to Hugh Jackman's house." I stated with a coy smile that made mom and Rory laugh and Colin rolled his eyes with a smirk.
"My baby his a thing for accents. That's why she's never allowed to me alone with Finn." Colin said as he pressed a light kiss to my cheek while shooing the masseur that was kneading my shoulders.
"Thanks, Ron, Jerry, Peter." Rory, mom and I called to the retreating men.
"I didn't know the gym had masseurs." Logan stated with a smirk.
"They don't." Rory and I answered him in unison and he lifted an eyebrow in confusion as I stood up from my seat.
"No, Ron, Peter and Jerry work for the laundry service, but they missed their calling." Mom told him and I nodded in agreement.
"You got laundry guys to give you a massage?" Luke asked us incredulously.
"Never underestimate the persuasive powers of Lorelai and Christa Gilmore. So, you guys have fun throwing the old hoop around?" Rory asked them with a smile and I felt Colin's chest vibrate in a silent chuckle so I turned my head to look at him in question but he just shook his head at me.
"Or something to that effect." Logan said.
"So, who won the game?"
"Nobody won. We just had fun. Do you girls need to clean up at all?"
"From...?" mom asked in confusion as I sat back down next to her.
"Right, well, I guess we'll see you out here."
"We'll be about 10 minutes." Colin added as they walked away to the change rooms.
"So what do we do?" Rory asked us once the boys had left.
"Ron, Jerry, Peter, you got 10 minutes?" mom asked them and we giggled as the men came back over to us. "I love working out."
All six of us were sitting out on the patio eating the fresh lobster that Logan, Luke and Colin had cooked for us while we were inside making the side dishes in the kitchen.
"Luke, weren't you a lobster neophyte? Looks like you liked it." Rory commented as she finished the last bite of her own lobster.
"It's good. I can't believe I've never had it before. You cooked them perfect." Luke told Logan and Colin who were smiling proudly at their accomplishment.
"Here, here." Mom cheered as her, Luke, Rory and I started clapping for the two of them.
"Thanks very much. You're too kind." Logan said with an amused smirk as Colin bowed slightly beside me.
"Not that I'm hunting for my own compliment, but that celery I cut, huh?" mom said to all us as she mimicked clapping silently.
"Let's hear it for the celery chopper." Rory cheered with a smile and I laughed aloud as we all clapped our hands for her.
"Oh, this is so spontaneous and unexpected. Not quite loud enough. Thank you, thank you."
"You practiced that speech, didn't you?" I teased her when we all quietened down and she shot me a mock glare from across the table.
"Hey it's so pretty out here, sun will be down soon, so before it gets dark, happy Valentine's Day." Logan said to his girlfriend with a smile as he reached under the table and came back with a small box in his hand.
"Oh My God, you humanely killed lobsters and you got me a present?" Rory squealed happily with a grin and I chuckled lightly at her reaction.
"I'm a multitasker."
"Mmm… Hah, It's a bracelet." Rory said as she opened the blue box and I leaned forward to see a beautiful silver bracelet nestled in the middle.
"It's a tennis bracelet." Luke told her in a knowing voice and I glanced at him in question.
"You know what a tennis bracelet is?" mom asked him sceptically as she raised an eyebrow at him.
"Well, my sister makes jewellery, so I've picked up some terms." He defended himself in an embarrassed tone and I smirked at him in amusement as his face turned red.
"Wow, I love it. Happy Valentine's Day." Rory said to Logan as she leaned over to give him a quick kiss on the lips.
"Back at you, Ace." Logan replied to her with a soft smile and I smiled at the two of them before glancing at my own boyfriend. Colin looked back at me with a loving smile and I slipped out of my seat to perch myself on his lap. I gave him a quick kiss on the lips as he wrapped an arm around my waist to stop me from slipping off and I put my arm around his neck so that my head was leaning on his shoulder.
"Well, I guess it's my turn. Happy Valentine's Day." Luke said to mom as he reached under the table and brought out another dark blue jewellery box before handing it to her.
"Really?" mom asked in surprise as she accepted the box and I smiled slightly in happiness at the shocked look on her face. Luke nodded at her in encouragement with an embarrassed expression and mom gingerly opened the box before letting out a gasp. "Oh, my god. Luke, it's beautiful."
"Good, good. It's gonna to look great on you."
"Look at this." Mom said as she lifted the necklace out of the box and showed it to me and Rory with a giant smile.
"It's you. And it goes well with mine." Rory gushed as she examined the necklace dangling from mom's hand. I frowned in confusion as I looked at the familiar looking necklace before glancing over at Logan because I knew that he had brought the necklace and tennis bracelet both for Rory. He had begged me to help him find something for her so I had firsthand knowledge.
"Oh, yeah, they're almost matching." I said with a slight smile as I giggled at my own private joke and Logan threw me a heated glare quickly.
"Luke and I actually sneaked out when you two were playing around in the kitchen. We found those in the same place." Logan covered when Rory and mom frowned in confusion at my joke and they nodded in understanding.
"Yep. Same shop." Luke agreed with a determined head nod and I smirked at the two of them as Colin shifted slightly underneath me.
"Alright, I guess that it's our turn." Colin said with a sigh as he reached into his jeans pocket and I scrunched my eyebrows together in confusion because we had said that we were going to do our gifts in private.
"Ooh! What'd you get me? What'd you get me?" I asked excitedly as I clapped my hands together because Colin always gave the best gifts and he smiled at me lovingly as he pulled out an envelope. I frowned in confusion as I took the white envelope off of him.
"Just so you know, my gift kicks your gifts asses." He announced jokingly to the other guys at the table and they exclaimed in protest as I opened the envelope. I glanced at my boyfriend in confusion before I pulled out a photograph of a cute tawny coloured puppy with large dark brown eyes.
"Aww. It's adorable." I gushed as I stared at the picture and showed it to the rest of the table who awed as well before I frowning in confusion at Colin. "What is it?"
"It's a puppy." Mom supplied helpfully and I rolled my eyes at her as she grinned. Colin chuckled lightly as he gave my waist a light squeeze.
"It's your puppy." Colin corrected her and I felt my eyes widen as I looked back at the picture. "It's called a moddle. It's a cross breed between a Maltese and a poodle."
"You got me a puppy?" I asked him quietly as I gazed up at him lovingly and he just smiled at me before pressing a kiss to my lips.
