Hey all, it's me xXShadowTheWolfXx. Again I know this chapter is long overdue, but it is a long chapter and I've had a lot to deal with at the moment. Also, I'm unfortunately losing the motivation to write this story, no one has reviewed my story past chapter 10 and the latest 5 reviews have all been for chapters 1 and 2, which just leads me to believe that you guys are losing interest in the story or you just don't like the chapters after chapter 10. For those that have reviewed and those that are enjoying the story,I just want to say thankyou, you guys/girls/whatever are the reason I write this story and I don't want anyone to worry and think that I'll just discontinue it, I won't. Anyway, rant over, on with chapter 14.
Chapter 14: Cast out, but not forgotten
The next couple of weeks continued with the same boring routine. Humphrey would be woken up early, he would go down and hunt, he would eat with his parents and his brother before spending the rest of the day with Shaun learning how to perform various Alpha duties. Humphrey found it all rather tedious and boring. Whilst he hated to admit it, he was starting to miss life as an Omega, he missed hanging out with his friends, he missed solving the pack's problems, he missed the good old days whilst the other pups were at Alpha school when the Omegas would just get together and play and stay up late at night under the stars telling stories and laughing with their friends without worrying about the Alpha pups spoiling the fun, hell, Humphrey had been picked pretty much unanimously as the Omega's leader not only because he was kind and smart, but he was the only one the bullies were truly scared of after an incident with him, Lilly and said bullies after which Eve promised to do some very nasty things to anyone who hurt Humphrey or Lilly. Boy, that brought back some happy memories.
Over the last few days, Humphrey had hardly been able to spend any time with Lilly, but he hoped to change that, there was a moonlight howl on that night and whether the pack liked it or not, Humphrey had decided he was going to ask Lilly to howl with him, there was no way he was going to let pack law come between them like it did with him and Kate. Somehow, he had managed to avoid Jaina, who acted sweet and innocently enough, but Humphrey knew that there had to be more to it than that.
Meanwhile
Shaun was wandering through the forest looking for Humphrey, he had given him a break whilst he dealt with something and wasn't quite sure where he had run off to. He was heading up to Humphrey's den to check if he was there when he was stopped by a wolf standing in front of him. "Remember, our deal's still on Shaun. Have you told him yet?" the wolf asked. "No, not yet. I'll tell him tomorrow, before the moonlight howl" Shaun replied. "Well, my daughter knows of her responsibilities, I hope your son does as well." The wolf asserted. "Don't worry, my son knows what is required of him. For the good of the pack." Shaun reassured the wolf, before they both went their separate ways.
The next evening
The sun was now starting to set below the horizon, the moonlight howl was fast approaching and the wolves were busy making their final preparations. Humphrey, Sasha and Zeke were down by the river getting ready for the moonlight howl, Humphrey swore that his mother had already made him take five baths that day and now she was making him wash himself again. Finally, after Sasha had made sure that they were ready, the two boys started heading off towards the area where the moonlight howl was to take place. "So, have you asked anyone to howl with you yet?" Humphrey asked as they walked. Zeke sighed. "Not yet, I don't know, no one here interests me." he replied.
Excusing himself and wishing his brother a fun night, Humphrey decided to go and look for Lilly. After a while, he found her and was about to ask her to come with him when he was intercepted by Jaina. "Hey Humphrey. Would you walk with me to the moonlight howl, I hear it's going to be a special one." Jaina said in a sickly sweet voice. Humphrey racked his brains, trying to think of a way out of this. "Ok, sure I'll walk with you, but can I ask Lilly something in private first?" he asked, without waiting for an answer, he took Lilly up to the small rocky hill that the pack had nicknamed howling hill, it was traditional for lovers to come up here to howl after they got married. As they sat on a rocky outcrop, Lilly looked out and admired the view, the entire plateau and the valley below was bathed in moonlight, giving everything a silvery glow, it was beautiful and the sounds coming from the moonlight howl which had already begun only increased that beauty.
"Wow Humphrey, this is amazing, what was it you wanted to ask me?" Lilly asked, taking her eyes off the view and turning to Humphrey, she noticed he was nervous for some reason. "Ummm...Listen Lilly, I was wondering...Would you like to howl at the moon with me?" He asked. "But it's against pack law for Alphas and Omegas to howl together, what if your parents or anyone else found out? We would get into lot of trouble." Lilly cautioned.
"Listen, I don't care about pack law or about Alphas and Omegas. All I know is that over these past few days I've begun to realise that I love you, perhaps I loved you all along, but I was too blind to see it. I couldn't care less what my parents or anyone else would think about us being together, I love you Lilly and I'll be dammed if I'm going to let pack law come between us. For once I just want to experience true happiness in my life. So if you feel the same way I do and if you would accept me, I would be honored to howl with you tonight." Humphrey said, bowing slightly. "I would love to" Lilly replied, leaning in towards her Alpha, that thought made her head spin.
Humphrey and Lilly both raised their heads and howled out their feelings to the moon, their voices mixing into a beautiful chorus. As the two wolves sang their hearts out, the sounds of the other wolves in the distance grew quieter and the whole world seemed to fade away around the two wolves, they were in their own wonderful world with only eachother. Humphrey opened his eyes and watched Lilly howling, her snow-white fur, glistening in the moonlight, shining like silver in the pale glow, she truly was beautiful. He couldn't believe that he finally had a chance to be happy and spend his life with someone who meant so much to him.
Meanwhile
Shaun was busy looking for Humphrey, he had something important that he needed to tell him, the problem was, he couldn't find Humphrey anywhere. Then as he walked over back towards the dens, he spotted a wolf that he hoped might have seen Humphrey.
"hey Jaina, have you seen Humphrey anywhere?" he asked. Jaina was no fool, she knew that Humphrey had run off with that Omega and she finally saw her chance to be rid of that stupid Omega, then she could have Humphrey. "Oh, I'm pretty sure I saw him heading up towards howling hill. Something about practicing for the howl" she replied, smilling innocently.
Humphrey and Lilly were just finishing up their howl. "Thank you Humphrey, I really enjoyed tonight and I would love to spend more time with you." Lilly said as Humphrey nuzzled her soft neck fur. Suddenly, the heard a twig snap and a deep growl sounded out. Humphrey and Lilly looked up and saw a dark figure skulking in the bushes. "Lilly, get behind me" Humphrey ordered, standing protectively in front of Lilly, just as Shaun stepped out from where he had been observing the pair.
"Listen...dad, stop, I know what you're thinking, but let me say something first." Humphrey started, but Shaun advanced on Lilly, ignoring Humphrey's protests. "You dare howl with my son Omega? Humphrey, I'm very disappointed in you, you know very well about the pack law that splits Alphas and Omegas, you are an Alpha, your responsibilities are with the pack, not some Omega outsider" Shaun yelled. "And? Why are you so angry just because she is an Omega? I love Lilly and I don't see any problem with that, what problem do you see with me being in love with her?" Humphrey asked.
"Omegas are weak, they are inferior and the title of leadership is only to be claimed by the strong. She is pathetic and a waste of your time. You could do so much better, half the young females in the pack would give a leg just to be married to a strong Alpha like you, yet you spend your time with runts like her, sometimes I wish you were half the wolf your brother is!" Shaun spat.
At this outburst, Humphrey's hackles raised. "I AM TWO TIMES THE WOLF MY BROTHER IS! I love Lilly, I have loved her since I first met her. I don't care about responsibility to the pack, I don't want to be used as some puppet and be told what I can or cannot do, If I can't be with Lilly or be happy here, then this is not the place for me, this is no longer my pack!" Humphrey angrily replied, before storming off down the hill, Lilly following close behind.
The pair ran out of the pack territory and reached the railway tracks, where they stopped to catch their breath. The two of them looked at eachother, then back towards the pack to make sure no one was following them, before they leaped across the tracks and headed for the sloping hills and craggy mountains on the other side, leaving the pack and the howling wolves behind, they were finally free at last.
Sasha walked up the slope to where Shaun sat, she could tell even from this distance that something had upset him. "What's wrong?" she asked. "I...I Think I just chased our son away. He was howling with that Omega he brought with him and when I confronted him about it...he ran away." he replied, on the verge of tears. Sasha did not want to believe that what he was saying was true, but she knew it was.
"I cannot believe this. For so long our son has been lost, and now, so soon after he's finally returned to us, you chase him out over something so trivial as pack law. For years haven't we prided ourselves in being a safe haven for wolves of all kinds, yet when our son returns with a beautiful Omega, you not only start righteously enforcing rules you haven't enforced for years, you also drive both of them out of the pack, all because of your jaded pride. What sort of message is this sending to other wolves, that the pack leader of this pack would rather disown his own son than see him fall in love with an Omega. I mean, who cares if she's an Omega? She's nice, kind and she makes our son happy, that's good enough for me, why can't it be good enough for you? you are the only one round here who cares about pack law and now you have driven out your son. Don't you see that he loves you? If you truly loved him, then you wouldn't care who it was he wanted to be with, so long as he was happy. I have not lost hope that there is still some part of the wolf I loved inside you. I'm going to send Zeke out after him and when they come back, you had better come up with one hell of an apology." Sasha berated as she hurried off to find Zeke.
Now that there was no one around, Shaun collapsed onto the ground and started to cry, tears flowing town his muzzle, soaking his fur and dripping onto the hard stone below. "What have I done? I promised never to become the monster my farther was, yet I have treated Humphrey with disdain his entire life, all in the name of molding him into a strong pack leader. It's all my fault, I'm the useless, good for nothing monster of a wolf. Oh Humphrey, I've been a fool, I would give anything to take back this past one and a half years and start afresh, I would even give my life if need be. I hope that you can forgive me for what I did, Fenrir knows, it's more than I deserve." Shaun lamented as he lay under the moon's glow.
Meanwhile
Sasha had just found Zeke at the moonlight howl. "Hey mum, have you seen Humphrey anywhere?" Zeke asked. "Listen, Zeke, that's what I have come to talk to you about, your brother has run away because your farther caught him howling with that white Omega, Lilly and I need you to go after him and convince him to come back to us. Your farther is failable, just like any other wolf and he makes his share of mistakes, but I think he truly regrets treating Humphrey like he did." Sasha replied. "Then I had best leave immediately, it's best if I travel alone, I'll be able to catch up to them more easily that way. I'll find them and bring them back as soon as I can." Zeke stated as he raced off towards the pack boarder.
