Chapter Fourteen
Kate's POV
I found myself wandering the gardens of Rivendell late in the afternoon of the next day. I'd gotten a hold of one of the messengers earlier in the day and asked him to deliver my letter and Olympia's letter to the Shire. Someone had also told Erestor I had been learning elvish so he had insisted on continuing my education in the language; meaning I'd been in the library for much of the morning.
I'd spent some time with Elladan and Elrohir after lunch; however they eventually left to take care of some sort of important matter. So I'd begun wandering the gardens. They were beautiful and had more types of plants and flowers than I'd known existed. I stared up into the trees and smiled as I heard birds singing.
I'll have to make Olympia visit sometime relatively soon…She'd love this. I thought. My heart clenched painfully at the thought of my sister. I missed her, and Natalie and Francesca. It was odd, not seeing any of them when I was so used to the three of them being around all the time.
Suddenly, I caught the sound of a lute. The sound was soft and seemed to carry on the breeze. I furrowed my eyebrows and listened for a moment before changing direction to follow the sound.
I soon came to a small plaza I'll say, for lack of a better word. There was a fountain with a bench nearby. The elf playing the lute sat on the bench, seemingly oblivious to my presence. I froze. That's the same elf from last night; the one who caught me staring! What the-? I realized.
I stood there for a minute like an idiot before I walked over to where the mystery elf was sitting. I have to find out his name…And possibly where I've seen him before. I thought.
"You're a very good musician, you know." I commented as I approached the elf. He smiled slightly.
"Thank you, my lady. I apologize, I did not realize you were here." He replied. "Please, sit." He invited, scooting over (as much as elves can scoot) to make room for me on the bench.
"Thank you." I responded, smiling.
"Forgive me if I seem blunt, my lady. Though I do not believe I have seen you in Imladris before. Would you care to tell me your name?" the elf asked, turning to face me.
"My name is Katelyn, though I usually prefer to be called Kate. I've never actually been here before." I replied.
"I see. Welcome to Imladris, Lady Katelyn. I am Lindir." The elf replied.
Lindir…Hmm…Aha! He was only actually in the books…And the first Hobbit movie, but that shouldn't really count because he wasn't mentioned in the Hobbit book. So that's why he looked so familiar! He looks almost exactly like his movie counterpart. But then again, almost everyone does. It's kind of creepy. I thought.
"Thank you, my lord." I replied a bit awkwardly. It still felt odd to refer to people as 'Lord'.
"If you do not mind my asking, Lady Katelyn…What brings you to Imladris?" Lindir asked.
"Curiosity. I've only ever read about Imladris and I suppose my curiosity got the best of me. I had to see it for myself. This city is beautiful, by the way." I answered.
"Where do you hail from that you have only ever read about this city?" Lindir responded, furrowing his eyebrows. Alright…story time! I thought.
"Would you believe me if I told you I was from another world?" I asked. I sighed internally when Lindir's eyes went about as wide as dinner plates. "Yes. I'm from another world entirely." I told him before launching once again into the story of the Fellowship in my living room and all the adventures that followed.
"As I understand, there are books in your world that tell of Middle Earth. Is that correct?" Lindir asked when I was done.
"An entire story full of odd circumstances and even more odd adventures, and you get hung up on the books?" I asked, thinking out loud. I blushed furiously upon realizing that I had in fact said that out loud. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to…" I trailed off when Lindir started to laugh.
"All is well, my lady. I take no offense." Lindir told me. "I would like to know more of the world you hail from, if you would not mind speaking of it." He continued.
"I wouldn't mind. First of all, I know about Imladris because I've read the books that you seem to be hung up on." I paused when Lindir chuckled again. "I don't know where to start, truthfully. My world is vastly different from this one. There's so much more technology in my world; all sorts of machines that do all sorts of strange things. But they polluted the Earth so much. That aspect was awful…" I trailed off for a moment. "Anyway! I used to live with my sister Olympia. Natalie and Francesca used to be over all the time. Natalie and Olympia used to practice Jiu Jitsu. Sometimes I would train with them. Francesca is an artist, so she would draw a lot. I think she still does. Olympia draws too; Francesca started to teach her." I continued, smiling.
"And what did you enjoy doing, Lady Katelyn?" Lindir asked, smiling back at me.
"Well, my lord. I love music." I began. Lindir's eyes lit up like a Christmas tree, disguising the face he'd pulled when I called him 'Lord'. Hmm. What was that about? I thought. "I wanted to be a music teacher, so I learned every instrument I could. Though I never learned this…It's a lute, right?" I asked, gesturing to the instrument Lindir was still holding. He smiled slightly.
"It is, yes. What instruments do you play?" Lindir asked.
"It would be easier to list what I don't play. But I know how to play the harp, I helped teach Olympia the flute, and I can play something called a guitar, which is vaguely similar to your lute." I replied.
"Do you sing as well?" Lindir continued.
"No! I can't sing for my life!" I exclaimed. "I sing like I dying Oliphant." I muttered. Lindir raised an eyebrow.
"I highly doubt you are that bad, Lady Katelyn." He commented.
"You haven't heard me sing yet. It's bad. My sister's a much better singer." I responded.
"Perhaps. I have not heard your sister sing either so I cannot pass judgment on that claim. Though I do not believe Lady Olympia is able to play the various instruments you seem to be able to." Lindir countered. Touché. I thought, narrowing my eyes slightly.
"It's getting late. We should probably go inside for dinner." I commented, turning my head towards the setting sun. Wow…That's an amazing sunset. I thought.
"Indeed it is…Would you allow me to escort you to dinner, Lady Katelyn?" Lindir asked. I could have sworn he was blushing.
"Uh…Sure! I'd like that. Thanks." I replied quickly.
Lindir smiled and offered me his arm as we got up. I smiled back and took his arm. I found it easy to talk to Lindir and we continued to talk, mainly about music, all the way to the Hall of Fire.
"I would hate to seem forward, my lady. However I am quite curious as to the music from your world. Would you be willing to introduce me to some of the music you have been speaking of?" Lindir asked, stopping at the doors to the Hall of Fire.
"Only if you teach me some of your music." I replied, also stopping.
"You have a deal, Lady Katelyn." Lindir told me. I nodded, furrowing my eyebrows slightly.
"Alright." I replied, drawing the word out a bit as I thought. "Why did you make a face earlier when I referred to you as 'Lord'?" I finally asked. Lindir seemed surprised, to say the least.
"I am not quite accustomed to such a title, as I am not often referred to as such." Lindir told me. I looked at him curiously.
"Then why do you seem so insistent on calling me 'Lady'?" I continued.
"It would not be proper to refer to you as anything else, my lady." Lindir told me. I screwed my lip to the side and pulled a face. Lindir looked like he was biting back a laugh.
"What if I asked you just to call me Kate? Or Katelyn, if you feel the need to be even slightly formal." I asked.
"First I would have to ask that in turn, you refer to me simply as Lindir. Following that I would ask that you have patience, as it will surely take me time to become accustomed to this…change." Lindir replied.
"You've got yourself a deal." I told him. Lindir nodded and we went inside.
*Natalie's POV*
Two days passed quickly, and I soon found myself riding across Pelennor Fields with Teran, Aragorn, the Jackass Extraordinaire, and fifty of Teran's soldiers. I fidgeted nervously on my horse as we rode.
What are you freaking out for?! You've faced much worse odds. I'm pretty sure the numbers are even. And we've got horses so that gives us an advantage. You've got nothing really to worry about…Except… The thought trailed off and I turned my eyes to Seobryn, who'd been unusually distant since the council two days ago.
Usually Seobryn was on my case about something; whether it was nagging me about not doing paperwork (which I usually got done within a decent time-range), criticizing the fact that I practiced Jiu Jitsu and swordsmanship nearly every day or just being a general pain in the ass. He'd been unusually distanced lately. I couldn't help but wonder.
What if it's just the calm before the storm? What if he's plotting against me or something? What should I do? Would anyone aside from Aragorn and Faramir believe me? Why am I panicking?! There'll be time to think about all this after we're done orc-hunting. Stop freaking out and keep your head in the game, damn it! I thought as we continued to ride.
I sent a glare in the direction of the Jackass Extraordinaire. He nodded his head in acknowledgement (which was a miracle in and of itself) and smiled slightly. I shuddered as Seobryn's evil smirk made my blood run cold. Something isn't right here.
Author's Note: Ta-da! Sorry this one had to be short guys! But if I included everything I had planned for the hunt in this than it would have come out much longer! But hey, more Lindir! What did you think of that? READ AND REVIEW PLEASE!
