Disclaimer: Still don't own Winx Club. In light of the recent attempts by the backers of SOPA to do an end-run around congress, the law, and the Constitution, I feel I should expand upon this. I do not own Winx Club. I do not hold stock in Rainbow. My work is simply a fan-made extension to the existing material. I claim ownership to my own creations, such as my characters, several locations, and their powers, but not to any of the cannon characters and locations, or to any other characters I may have borrowed. I also do not own New York City, Washington D.C., England, the Atlantic Ocean, the test site of the Tsar Bomba, The Statue of Liberty, The White House, The Library of Congress, Stonehenge, or the Earth as a whole. (If I did own the world, SOPA would not exist.) Have I left anything out? Oh, I forgot to mention each of the various monuments in Washington D.C.? Well hopefully the jail cell has good Wi-Fi. I'd hate to leave you guys hanging. (I am not happy about this. I thought we'd buried this thing back in 2012!)
When I was watching the show, I never really found Nebula to be all that great a character, or even a particularly good villain. After last chapter, I find I like her better, which is strange given that I'm the one who wrote it. I went back and watched some of the episodes she's in, and I can't help but find her a more interesting and more sympathetic character than I have in the past. Weird.
One more thing before we get started. I should explain what happened to those Veccan dragons. They were the victims of what is commonly referred to as the "square-cube" law. Say you have an animal that is roughly one foot by one foot by one foot. Let's call this our pet cube. Our pet cube weighs ten pounds. It's strong enough to lift thirty pounds, minus it's own body weight, for a total of twenty pounds. Now let's say we want a bigger cube, maybe two feet in every direction. He's now twice as big. His muscles are four times as strong because they have four times the cross-sectional area to work with. But he's eight times as heavy. He now weighs eighty pounds and can lift one hundred and twenty, minus body weight, for a total of forty. This time, he got stronger. But next time, his body weight will begin to exceed his strength, and he won't be able to support his own weight. Because of this, the Veccan Dragons, being many times the size of a blue whale (yes, they're that big), are simply too large to be supported by their bones and muscles alone. Magic has to be involved, or they'd be unable to walk. And that's if they're lucky. More likely, their hearts wouldn't be strong enough to keep blood moving through their bodies, and they would die. Fairies use magic, but these things depend on it for their very existence. SCIENCE!
Sorry, I wandered off into geek land for a bit there, but now we're back. Let's get on with the story, because this intro is taking way too long.
The five fairies exited the portal into absolute chaos. Monsters and fairies battled across the island, leaving the ground littered with the dead and wounded. Fires burned in the once pristine forest while the formerly gorgeous white beach was covered with craters and scorch marks.
"Amelia," Dhalia yelled over the din, "we have to find Eclipsis!"
"She's in the castle!" Amelia replied. "We're going to have to fight our way in!"
"We don't have enough power left!" Perdi said. "Even if we make it through to Eclipsis, we won't have the strength to stop her!"
"Then we fight without magic!" Artis shouted. "Reyva!"
"Got it! Spacial Pocket!" Reyva exclaimed, retrieving the five cloth bundles from their resting place. She immediately began handing them out, and the girls unwrapped their old weapons.
"Let's go Classix." Dhalia said. "We have a monster to stop."
The five fairies flew through the air towards the entrance to the castle. Monsters rose up to engage them. A harpy fell from the sky with an arrow through her heart, courtesy of Perdi. A giant bat was smashed from the air by Reyva's hammer. A massive dragonfly lost its wings to Dhalia's staff. A flying ape died when Artis buried a knife in the back of its neck. A winged wolf was cut in three by Amelia's flashing swords. Anything they couldn't kill, they simply went around, heading straight for the entrance to the battered castle. Finally they reached the gates. Or rather, what was left of them. The beautifully worked gates had been ripped from their hinges and now lay in a pile of twisted metal. The fighting inside was just as intense as it had been outside.
"Amelia, which way?" Dhalia asked.
"Up! She's heading for the highest tower in the castle!"
"There's a staircase!" Reyva pointed. "Let's go!"
The girls flew to the stairs, then up the narrow spiraling passage. It let out at the base of the tower. At the entrance a fairy was under heavy attack by wolf serpents. She was powerful, but her wounds were serious and she was tiring. The beasts surrounded her, preparing for the kill.
"We have to help her!" Amelia shouted diving into the fray. Her twin swords flashed and one of the foul creatures lost first its legs and then its head as the devastating surprise attack hit.
To her left she saw a blur of motion as Dhalia reduced another monster to shreds. An arrow pierced another canine skull, killing the beast instantly. To her right Reyva hammered another one into a pulp and Artis stabbed the last one.
"Are you okay?"
"It 's not important! Go stop Eclipsis!"
"Without help you'll die in the next hour." Reyva said bluntly.
"GO!" The blond fairy roared.
"No!" Amelia roared back. "Nebula already gave her life for this! No more death! Not if I can help it!"
"Nebula?" The fairy was shocked. "Dead?"
"Yes! And you'll die too if you don't let us help you!"
"There's no time!"
"Time. Artis!"
"On it! Chrono Lock!"
The fairy froze, locked in time.
"She'll be safe for now." Artis said. "Let's go."
The girls continued into the tower, flying upward as fast as they could. Monsters that got in their way didn't live to regret their mistake. The stairs let out in a large room with a huge door leading out to a balcony. A fairy lay in a messy heap on the floor.
"Roxy!" Amelia yelled.
"Reyva, how is she?" Dhalia asked.
Reyva rushed over placing her hands on the fallen queen. She looked up. "She's alive, but unconscious. She should survive."
"Let's go!" Artis yelled, pointing towards the door. "Eclipsis is out there!"
The girls flew out onto the balcony. Two women stood there. Morgana and-
"Allanya?!" Amelia managed to stumble while flying.
"Not quite!" The woman snarled, throwing a pulse of dark energy at them.
"Eclipsis." Artis's voice could have frozen a star. "Now you pay! Temporal Blast!" A huge beam of energy shot from Artis's hands towards the woman.
"You think you can stop me with this?" Eclipsis said, brushing the blast aside with her hand. "Begone!" Dark lightning arced from her hands to Artis, blasting the fairy into the wall.
"Artis!" Perdi cried, rushing to her fallen friend.
"Urrrr..." The fairy of time groan and stirred.
"She's alright!"
"You cannot stop me." Eclipsis said. "Watch as I destroy the Great Seal of Arcadia!"
"Never, monster." Morgana said in a voice of iron. "Spell Bind!"
"Foolish fairy. You think your power is enough to stop me? You thought wrong. Spell Shatter!"
A giant disk of white light appeared over the island of Tir Nan Og. Ancient and powerful magic symbols spun along its edge, binding the Prince of Monsters. Cracks began to appear in the disk, snaking out from the center.
"You shall not succeed, beast!" Morgana spat. The seal's destruction seemed to be affecting her.
"You are wrong." Eclipsis stated, dark power flaring from her. "You tried to stop me. Now you shall pay the price."
With a sound like a million windows breaking, the seal shattered into fragments which rained down like snow. Morgana collapsed.
"You will pay for this!" Amelia shouted. "Mana Siphon!" The fragments were starting to fade, but the remaining ones flew to the girl. She grabbed one of her swords, holding it in both hands. "Spell Blade!" The power she'd drawn from the broken seal coursed into the sword which glowed an angry white. "Now it's your turn Eclipsis!"
Amelia lunged for the evil queen. A barrier flew up between the two, but it flickered weakly. Amelia's sword cut straight through it. It did buy Eclipsis time to take a step back, and Amelia's blade whistled across Eclipsis's cheek, leaving a small cut. Blood dripped from the shallow gash.
"How?" Eclipsis was shocked. "How did you-?"
Amelia swung her sword again, but this time Eclipsis was ready. She jumped back and leapt off the balcony. Amelia stared as the evil Queen of Monsters fled. When Eclipsis was out of sight, she fell to her knees, utterly spent.
"Amelia!" Dhalia hurried to the girl's side. "Are you okay?"
"No."
"Reyva!" Dhalia turned to the dark-skinned fairy. "How's Morgana?"
"She's breathing, but..."
"But?"
"Her magic is gone." Amelia said in a whisper. "Eclipsis destroyed it."
"How's Artis?" Dhalia asked.
"I think she's okay." Perdi said.
"Good. Perdi, keep watch here. Reyva and I are going to go see what we can do to help."
"Got it."
"Reyva, we need to go help that fairy at the base of the tower!"
"Right!"
The two fairies flew to the stairs, hurtling down through the tower.
Perdi glanced around Amelia was fine, but she just knelt staring off into the distance. Morgana was starting to stir, but Artis was beginning to thrash.
"Artis!" No response. The girl was unconscious. "Artis!" Nothing.
"No choice then. Mind Probe!"
Artis's thoughts were jumbled and chaotic, completely without reason. But one thought was clear.
Father. Mother. I failed. I couldn't do it. I wasn't strong enough.
Perdi froze. Father? Mother? Artis began to thrash again.
"Artis! You have to wake up! Artis! Artis!"
Artis continue her violent thrashing.
"Thought Projection!"
Artis! It's me, Perdi! You have to wake up! Now!
Why? What's the point? I failed!
We need you Artis. I need you.
I failed.
Then make it right. Next time, we won't fail. But we need you to make it happen. Artis, snap out of it!
Artis's eyes fluttered open. "Perdi?" Her voice was fuzzy. "Was that-?
"Yes. Now stay still."
"I-" Artis choked on the words, tears springing to her eyes. She grabbed Perdi and began sobbing into her chest.
"You're safe Artis. It's okay."
Several hours passed and the monsters withdrew from the island, leaving its battered inhabitants to clean up the damage. Those fairies still able to help began tending to the wounded, clearing the rubble, looking for survivors. Roxy, Morgana, Artis, and the fairy they'd saved at the base of the tower, who turned out to be Aurora, the Major Fairy of the North, were all given full medical attention. Hundreds of fairies were dead or severely wounded. Hundreds of others bore lighter wounds, but almost no one escaped unscathed. In one swift strike, Eclipsis had devastated the fairies of Earth.
A/N: Well that was...traumatic. And a complete disaster. One seal still holds. Can they draw the line there? Or is Eclipsis really unstoppable? We'll find out.
Artis... She's been carrying this for months. Never letting anyone see it. Always helping others. Always doing her best to ease their pain. Can you blame her for her actions?
Morgana. She too has sacrificed herself in the fight to stop Eclipsis, but it wasn't enough.
So many people, losing so much. This is war. This is the greatest evil to stalk humanity.
